Martin was on time and with the equipment needed to install our fixtures. He was neat ,cleaned up the work space, and even taught me how to replace the bulbs in the new fixture. Very personable would definitely use again and refer to friends and family.

Marty was very timely and quickly diagnosed my exploding light problem (unfortunately due to my own wiring incompetence) and immediately resolved the problem. I appreciated his knowledge, professionalism and punctuality. I would certainly hire him again.

I found Retter Electric on Angie's List. He is a very good guy. I have used him before. They did a great job. They were on time and did exactly what had to be done. They were very honest about everything and did no sugar coating. They did not pressure me to do anything. He told me what I needed to fix and what could wait.
Description of Work: Retter Electric replaced some major wiring in my house and general electrical repairs.

Called ahead of time; quickly surveyed work and was into repairs; finished in about a hour; tested all circuits for correct operation; cleaned up materials. Polite and prompt, very competent. He was kind not to complain about how I had messed it up.
Description of Work: Had to have one two-way switch trouble-shoot due to my miswiring. Also involved isolating power source from same outlet to two more indipendent circuits. Replace/change out 4 switches (3 two way) and one standard.

After living in our place for 12 years, we were mystified when the handrail at our entry stair suddenly began to carry a current. After being shocked several times on our way out the door, we gave Marty a call. Never having faced this kind of thing before, he began to systematically rule out the first simple things which might be the cause, but still no luck in de-electricfying the handrail. At this point, Marty called upon his ultimate resource - his uncle who was an electrician for decades in San Francisco. After consulting the sage on the nature of the situation, the age of the house, history of our renovations, etc., the two of them solved the problem in a matter of minutes. What a relief that no walls needed to be opened or any other disruptive work was necessary. Having that historic knowledge of San Francisco construction methods and codes was invaluable. Thanks Marty!

The work was done efficiently and very neatly with the old light fixtures placed in the box. I appreciate the time spent to test and direct the motion detector in the area I requested. I would highly recommend and refer others to call Retter Electric for electrical work.

He came on Tuesday to check out the work. He stayed for quite a long time chatting and said he'd be back at 2:30 to do the job. By 3 he wasn't here so I called and it turned out he was across town, so we rescheduled for Friday. He came on time and did the job within 2 hours -- which included going to a few stores and ultimately back to his shop to get a part. After he finished, he explained what he did and why he did it. My experience with most workers is that they usually shake your hand or greet you in some formalish way, give you their card and then ask how I found out about them. This electrician did none of that. In fact he never even told me his name. This doesn't take away from the quality of his work, but it did make me think that he wasn't very interested in getting more business. When he left I told him I got him from Angie's list and would post a good report and he kind of shrugged.
Description of Work: He repaired non-working sockets in the bathroom and fixed two different sets of lights in the basement.

I called at 8am on Monday morning, left a voicemail and Marty called me back at 8:15am. He arrived at 10am and was very informative, educational even. He seemed to really enjoy explaining how the electrical works in addition to repairing and replacing the appropriate parts. Marty gave me the option of putting back the old GFI switch once he found out that it was the upstream white wire that he needed to fix the connections of. He said he carries the $14 GFI switches and I could upgrade to the new one. I decided to go ahead and do this as the older $8 equivalent version was about 20 years old and I had another one go out last year. He said that these 20 year old ones may start going out now possibly because the electricians who did the work about 20 years ago did not twist the wires enough. He was really great.
Description of Work: Replace GFI outlet that had stopped working. Troubleshooting found that neutral line had gone bad apparently upstream due to handyman patching in for work done a few months back and possibly not twisting wires together well enough. Therefore also cleaned up upstream junction box.

Marty showed up promptly to review the work I needed, give advice and prepare a quote. He returned two days later to do the job. He arrived with his helper on time and went to work after we reviewed the job. I had changed the job to add two outlets in another part of the house. He worked quickly and the job looked great. Better, it all worked perfectly and he was very helpful when I had questions about additional work for the future. They locked up after they finished and cleaned up before they left. He returned two days later to go over plans for additional work. This was a great experience and I now have complete trust that Marty will be able to solve any other electrical problems that come up.
Description of Work: They replaced five outdated electrical outlets with new grounded outlets, added two new electrical outlets and installed and wired a new closet light.

My experience with Retter Electric was fantastic. I had brought in a couple other electricians for estimates on grounding some outlets. One of the electricians never showed up, and the other one (Ike's) gave me an estimate of $11,000 to completely re-wire my home. When Marty came out I explained that the old, ungrounded wiring concerned me and that I would like to have my outlets grounded. Since my home was built in 1880, it was going to be hard to find the necessary pipes to do the grounding (hence Ike's "rewire the whole house" suggestion). Marty suggested that I simply replace the two prong outlets with GFI outlets, so if a serge were to occur the GFI outlet would prevent it from destroying my electronics. I felt very comfortable with Marty, and truly felt like he wasn't there for the money, but was instead there because he enjoyed his work and he wanted to make the customer happy. He did indeed make me very happy. When doing the change out of the outlets he discovered that my smoke detector had been wired between two pieces of drywall which was not to code. He fixed that problem as well. The original estimate was around $1200, but the end cost was closer to $500. I was so happy with the work that I recommended that my neighbor call him when one of the lighting fixtures (probably from the 1880's) caught fire when she was changing out a bulb. Marty came out that same day, took the fixture, replaced the wiring and put it all back up for under $200. Retter Electric is the way to go for all of your electrical needs!
Description of Work: I had multiple two prong outlets replaced with GFI outlets. I had one area of "questionable" wiring investigated and repaired, and had my smoke alarm re-wired to code. Marty also came out on my recommendation to my neighbor's home to fix a light fixture that caught on fire due to very old and poor wiring.

Marty did some sleuthing and found that a previous electrician had botched a job that resulted in a contained electrical fire. He explained the issues in depth and advised wisely on next steps.

Marty came and gave me an estimate and, when I asked, then explained to me how this do-it-yourselfer could save some money by doing some of the work myself. So I bought the supplies he told me to get and laid the conduit underground (we were re-doing the back yard at the time). I had all the plugs and supplies ready for the time he came back. He was on-time and the job was well under budget because I could do the prep work and he could do the specialty work. I found him on Angie's List and will hire him again whenever I need an electrician.

I have just joined Angie's List and this was my first experience of hiring someone from Angie's List. I hired Retter Electrical, Marty. The best decision I have ever made. He spent almost an hour with me looking at the job and telling me what honestly can and cannot be done. We scheduled an appointment and the job was completed in less than two days. Everything he told me was done. I live in the East Bay and the property is in SF. Perfectly done without my supervision.
Description of Work: Replaced two electrical panel boxes; added one new service meter for hallway and garage. In addition, lighting in garage was wired incorrectly, fixed necessary wiring to bring wiring up to code; added additional lighting in the garage.

I'm very happy with his work. The house is over 100 years old. He took the time necessary to figure out a good way to run the wiring up to the third floor. He had to install conduit outside the building from a very difficult and tight location, and he did a great job. He didn't cause any cracks in the plaster walls or ceiling even though he had to do a lot of work in the attic above. The cuts he made in the walls were minimal. He did the rough-in work and due to my own slow progress with the remodel didn't come back until about 8 months later to finish up, but he picked up right where he left off.
Description of Work: Ran several new circuits from garage up to third floor, installed new wiring, outlets and/or switches for kitchen remodel, bathroom update and furnace in attic.

I had 24 hours to fix these problems from a previous tenant before the new one moved in. Couldn't find any electricians who could come for 3 weeks. Marty called, heard the story and was in the house in 20 minutes. Friendly, professional, quick, thorough, practical. Great experience. Said that he responds to emergencies quickly and even though he was on another job, he popped over and took care of everything super fast. This is now my permanent electrician!

I received excellent quality from the very first phone call. Marty seemed so experienced and comfortable with the project, he was able to determine the scope of the work by telephone. The physical estimate confirmed what we had discussed, with no surprises. Marty's whole demeanor with his extensive knowledge of both the old and new electrical systems and what worked best with the age and style of my house was unbelievably re-assuring (previous electrician had left extensive wall damage and repair requirements). The final results and quality of Marty's work were perfect. The whole house was left so immaculate, I could not believe the work had been completed! Marty took great care and respected both my old house and my limited budget. I will use this company again and recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: Marty installed 3 new outlets, replaced light fixtures, and removed old wiring as well as offered expert opinions for additional work.
