I called them and set up a tune up appointment because our sprinkler system was not covering all the area needed. They came out and basically told me my system was outdated and needed replacement. Our system used to work fine and cover the whole lawn so I thought it just needed a tuneup. Their price to replace the system was too high in my estimation so I ended up doing it myself. It works fine now that I removed and cleaned the sprinkler heads which is what I thought the "tune up" I bought would do.

Scheduled appointment and they arrived on schedule. Checked all sprinkler valves and sprinkler heads to ensure they were operating properly. They found 5-6 sprinkler heads that were clogged or partially clogged and cleaned the dirt from the screens and/or the heads. Did a thorough job and kept our lawn in good condition through the entire Summer.

The crew of the company showed up on time. They performed the checks on all the sprinklers and made adjustments so that the water is going to the plants and not the sidewalk. I agreed to replace the broken sprinkler for additional charge, and they dug out the old one and replaced it with the new one. They replaced the patch of grass around the new sprinkler head and did not leave any mess in the garden.

The employee came out and looked at our property and stated that there wasn't much he could do. He did adjust a sprinkler head, but that was it. I felt that we didn't get the full service we expected.

WE were very pleased with all aspects of their work.

Overall we were very pleased with our experience. Rick was our designer and we used all of the suggestions that gave us. He seemed genuinely interested in making sure that we not only met our design goals, but that we spend our limited budget wisely. Sharon in the office was always helpful and responsive, she was always prompt in returning phone calls and e-mails. Dee was our main contact throughout the project, he listened to our concerns and answered our many questions. We were very fortunate to have Juan as our foreman as he managed the work crew's activities efficiently throughout the work day. Each day that these guys worked it was well over 100 degrees, the heat was unbearable and yet the crew worked tirelessly for the entire day. In summary I would use G & L Design in the future as it is nice to find a company that really cared about making sure that their customer was pleased with the the outcome of the project.stackable bloc

Complications brought on by the HOA created challenges but G&L were flexible and worked with the situation. The timing was later than expected but they completed the work satisfactorily. Their professionalism was much appreciated!

All primary communications were handled through Sharon. Although she had an answering service who took and transmitted phone messages that I wasn't so keen on, Sharon was VERY on top of email communications. In fact, most of our communication was via email and it was extremely effective throughout the entire process. As for the work, our front and back yards were in horrific shape and in dire need of an overhaul. It was basically hardened dirt with dead grass from years of neglect by not only us, but our mow blow and go gardener. Dee provided a very competitive estimate relative to other estimates I had received. I selected G&L and had originally scheduled a start date for the work, but had to postpone that at the last minute due to some plumbing work that my plumber was dragging his feet about doing in the front yard (rerouting a mickey mouse water supply line that had gotten pushed up out of the ground by tree roots). Sharon was understanding, and graciously moved some things around to postpone the start. After I had gotten the necessary plumbing work done, we were back in business. Dee and his crew methodically tilled and graded our soil, tuned up our existing old school sprinkler system, and laid new sod in under a week. My wife and I are extremely impressed by how wonderful our lawn looks and the quality of coverage by our sprinkler system. Dee was very informative about how to take care of our lawn and offered his advice whenever we need it. The only thing I wish is that he could have helped me figure out how to program and use my new sprinkler timer. But seeing as I purchased it on my own rather than through him as he'd offered, he was not familiar with the timer I bought, and the competitive price I paid for his services, It was not a big deal at all to just spend a few minutes reading the instruction manual to follow the relatively simple guidance. From the very beginning to the completion of the project we had an absolute terrific experience. There were ups and downs, as there is with all construction, but the team at G&L was always professional, responsive and delivered. Rick was our designer and he listened to what we wanted and used his expertise to get us the most for our budget. We had a nice back and forth on where to spend the money so we could get the most bang for our buck and overall the process was very comforting. Sharon in the office is a delight. We've never had the pleasure of actually meeting her, but we've never worked with anyone so responsive, returning emails way past normal business hours and always communicating with her crews. The guys out in the field are top notch, but she's the one that keeps it running. Dee was our point person on the ground and he was super helpful, listened to our concerns, answered our many questions, eased our worries and over-delivered again and again. He has a great team, with Juan as the foreman, and together they ran like a well oiled machine. We had a tight deadline and they made it. We had last minute changes come up and they adapted. We asked for final touch-up and they stayed late and finished. It was so nice to find a company that cared as much about what we thought of their work as we did of the result. Since the completion of the project there was a follow-up needed as some of the sprinklers needed adjusting and Sharon and Dee organized for a visit the next day and fixed the problem. We've been so impressed with their care and work that we've contracted them to perform maintenance as well.

Overall we were very pleased with the experience. We were thrilled by Allie Hansen's design for the property. She really listened to us and her design reflected our preferences for water efficient and low maintenance plants. She and Dee also helped us to develop a plan that matched our budget. After several estimates, we found that their plan was -- though not the cheapest --- the best use of our money. They worked with us to develop affordable solutions to a challenging property and gave us "a big bang for our buck." The finished design is beautiful. Our yard is lush, smells beautiful (lots of lavender and jasmine) and gets lots of complements from friends and family. I was stunned by what a difference the natural word fence makes to the backyard and appreciated that they did smart things like leave the old fence in the alley way up behind the new fence. Now if anyone graffitis the fence (a problem in our alleyway) they aren't damaging the new fence. We also appreciated their willingness to work with our electrician, who simultaneously installed backyard lighting. Everyone who worked on the project was friendly and pleasant. The only small concern I have had with G and L, is that communication is sometimes difficult. Your best bet is always to talk with Dee directly, but he is very busy and not always available. I often feel that subject matter is lost in translation over email. Phone conversations may be a better option. We were pleased with the outcome of the project and would recommend them to friends.

The landscape designer, Rick, called around to the house a couple of time to discuss what I wanted, to offer suggestions etc, then went off and drew up some plans. The resultant cost exceeded the budget that I had originally given him but after having talked through the design with him, and the company owner Dee, I went along with the full plan. They worked with me on the dates that I wanted the job to begin, and on the morning in question the whole crew turned up and ripped out the lawn, the fencing and all the plants, a completely clean slate to start with. Great job. New earth came in, and the pavers. They began building a small stucco bench wall (which was color matched to an existing wall. they leveled the soil, laid the pavers, gave me the fire-pit area and the walkways, and finally brought in the plants. Along the way we added a fountain and a couple of small trees, and the re-stuccoing (?) of the existing wall. There were a couple of hic-cups along the way, some mis-communications etc, But G&L were incredibly responsive and went out of their way to ensure that I was pleased with the results. Dee would show up at the house as soon as he could in response to any concerns I had, day, evening, weekend, whenever! He always answered the phone and Sharon in the office kept in constant contact via email. Great great service, and I am very pleased with the results. Obviously the plants are still growing in, a few have died along the way (valley heat) but Dee had already said that any casualties would be replaced. Can't recommend these guys enough. I'm still trying to work out the finances to see if I can have my pool deck area hardscaped by them

G&L Design Building & Landscape Inc I have been using G&L Design Building & Landscape Inc, for 4 or 5 years. What I like is that they call to see if everything is growing, and the dog had dug in some turf in which I expected to pay for. They came out and fixed the turf and didn't charge me for it. Very excellent and honest people.

Sharon gave G & L my first best impression. She was (is) extremely prompt with replies to emails and questions. Dee was amazing as well. During the early stages of demolition, I asked Dee about building a BBQ island that was not in the plans. I would not recommend making changes once work has already started, but somehow, Dee was able to accomodate my request and come up with a space saving way to add a BBQ island to our small yard. He gave excellent suggestions for our firepit, BBQ and hardscape. The crew was professional and timely and Juan, the foreman, was great. Even with the rainy season, and holidays, the project was completed on schedule. A few weeks after the project, we noticed that our front sprinklers were no longer working. We contacted G & L, and Dee came over to take a look and fixed the problem. I am thankful that we chose G & L, because the project went as smoothly as I could hope. It was a scary thought to go through a huge demoltion and redo our entire backyard. The amount of things that could go wrong with if we chose the wrong landscaper gave us nightmares. G & L did excellent work and we are thrilled with our new backyard that is much more family friendly. We would highly recommend G & L to anyone considering doing work in their yard - big or small.

We had a great rapport with their designer. We explained what we were looking for and he delivered a fantastic plan. During the construction phase the crew was mostly very professional and the quality of the work was very good. The job took quite a bit longer than was promised, but in the end we were happy with the results. A few weeks after the job was completed, we had some small issues with the material between the pavers being washed away when it rained. The crew came back and fixed the issues promptly. Overall, I would recommend them, with the small caveat that it might take a bit longer than expected due to scheduling issues.

Not well. Service provider had a minimum which was not listed. And surprisingly this minimum was higher than the cost of their other posted services. More likely, they did not want the job.

Beginning with the first phone call, and continuing through to the last email, all communication and services by G&L were handled in a friendly, professional manner. Sharon, Dee and their crew fulfilled our contract excellently. Dee was great with suggestions for the landscaping as well as hardscaping, since we only had a general idea of what we wanted, and weren't sure about specific plants and flowers, etc. He did a fantastic job choosing low maintenance plants, which we wanted, and making suggestions for colors and placement of other flowers. Dee also accommodated my request for some other plants not listed in the brochure. The entire crew were very hard-working, prompt, and attentive, and they did a great job. I can finally look out my window to the backyard, and smile, rather than cringe. Neighbors were very complimentary of the new yard. I would recommend G&L and would absolutely use them again for any landscaping/hardscaping project.

G&L Design Building & Landscape met all of my expectations in their performance of the Contract. Sharon (Office Manager) and Dee (On Site Forman) were professional and customer friendly throughout the course of the project. I was especially impressed with how Dee accommodated my request for adjustments and workarounds as unforeseen issues came up. Dee was also helpful in the landscape design phase and the selection of plants and pavers. Dee's Crews were prompt and courteous and put in a full days work…starting at 7:30am each work day. My family and neighbors have had only praise for the completed project. I would not hesitate to use G&L Design again and recommend them for your landscape project.

I called G & L in early October in a bit of a panic, as I was hosting a huge outdoor party in celebration of my son's wedding in early November, and I had been traveling and working and was unable to focus on my outdoors until less than five weeks before the event. I had limited time and money, and basically needed someone to come in and first tear down dangerous wooden steps and an old outside bed, then clear out debris, upgrade my irrigation system, and make my outdoors look beautiful and lush without looking "newly" done. All I can say is, Sharon and Dee were completely amazing about my dilemma. They rearranged their schedules to accommodate mine. Dee came over and eye-balled the work and gave me a time and money estimate that combined my needs with reality. I went with him to the nursery, and he also made sure that none of the plants would aggravate my son's allergies. When I felt nervous about the timing, they rearranged things so the prep work would be done earlier than they had originally said, and then Dee and his team came in to redo the irrigation system, grade, smooth, beautify, plant, and design. They were even willing to work Sundays to make sure it was all done ahead of time. I now look out my window and see a beautiful, succulent-filled, stunning outside area just waiting for the party to begin. I really recommend these guys. They are honest, hard-working, have a sense of humor, and are just really good human beings! They listened, took all my needs into account, and then did a great job.

They were professional but they missed a couple of things that didn't catch their attention. I wasn't entirely happy. I won't recommend this company.

I received the bid from G & L right away in fact before any of the other bids. Several of the others I had to call and remind them I needed it and had planned to do the work quickly. G & L had the best bid by a good 35% and were the ones that had looked into and presented something within my budget. The others did not ask what my budget was. I called and emailed with many questions to compare the content of the quote and Sharon was quick and responsive on all of them. When the day came, they had 4-5 workers. The job only took a day and a small part of another day. Others had quoted me up to a week to complete. The backyard looks great and was what I asked for. I also know if I need any follow up or if there are any issues with the plants (they have a 3 month plant guarantee) that I would be able to reach them and they would come and correct anything that needed to be done. Thank you again G & L and Dee and Sharon for another great job.

We bought a Big Deal from Angie's List for landscape design. We really like Rick's creative design for our very sloped and very challenging backyard. Based on how much we liked Rick's design and the comps we got, we decided to hire G&L to implement the plans. We were a little surprised when Dee took the job over from Rick. As soon as that happened, things went south. Honestly, it seemed like a bait and switch. Dee was pushy and sometimes just plain rude. Plus I don't think he knows that much about plants. For example, we asked him multiple times to remove the choker weed growing in our backyard. Everyone living in the Hollywood Hills is familiar with this virulent weed that can kill the good plants if you are not careful. Dee told us that it is his job to know about plants, described the plant as ivy and told us to let him do his job. Dee seemed to be hiring guys from the local day laborer site who had little landscaping expertise. For example, they planted small new plants--and then promptly dumped mulch on top and buried them. We never seemed to be able to communicate our ideas, needs, concerns and questions effectively with G&L. The design changed without our approval. Dee brought another client to our house and sat in our backyard while we were home discussing her yard--without our permission. The job took far longer than promised. We had to pester G&L for weeks to complete the agreed upon scope of work. They failed to complete several items that we were promised (e.g., stump and weed removal) despite our many many efforts. At one point we actually asked them to walk away from the job for the costs accrued to date, but they essentially refused by promising to make us happy. Which they didn't. The quality of hardscape materials is exceedingly poor. (Although the plant materials have survived, so I give them credit there.) For example, what was supposed to be "gravel fill with pavers" turned out to be the type of rock fill you use in a pothole with no pavers--no exaggeration. The explanation we received when we pressed this issue was that they gave us lots of other stuff for free so the money had to come from somewhere....meaning that they miscalculated the cost so instead of getting our approval for an overage or change order, they simply changed the design without our approval. They tried to upsell us on a bunch of useless items and then got frustrated with us when we refused to bite. To their credit, Sharon and Dee both try to be very timely in their responses, which I appreciate. But we are very disappointed in the work and have spent months and $$$$$ correcting and completing the work. It's taken us months to get over the bitterness we feel at the experience. Do yourself a favor and don't hire these guys.

As with any large project there were a few misunderstandings along the way. The electrical hook up to my existing outlets required an outside electrician which I did not understand from the beginning. Dee graciously agreed to cover the difference. We reached a compromise regarding a steel railing to be added to the brick stairway. He handled the installation and I paid additional for the railing. If I had a concern, I emailed Sharon in the office and she responded quickly. At one point toward the end of the project I requested a meeting with Dee, Rick and myself to clear some issues. This was a very important part of the project and I would recommend clear communication with all parties along the way. The warranty program is inclusive of all areas of the project, and I have been assured that help will be available if anything goes wrong. I interviewed several other companies prior to selecting G & L and I found Rick to be most helpful in creating a design that I would like. I read all the reviews listed on Angie's List and can now agree with what others have stated about projects done by G & L.

The thing that sold us on G&L in the first place was the landscape design they created. Allie is an amazing designer and she got what we wanted right away. We absolutely love the design. The hardscape looks fantastic. Dee worked with us tirelessly to find just the right pavers since we wanted a more modern look and that's not the style in pavers right now. We were really impressed with his willingness to go the extra mile to find just the right thing. He recommended pavers since we have an invasive tree that had pushed up the old concrete patio, and any new damage like this will be easier to repair with pavers than with concrete. The crew was punctual, pleasant and thorough. I would absolutely give them an A+ for the hardscape and drainage work that they did. When it came to the landscaping, it felt like they rushed that part of the job a bit, and I would give them a B+ for this part of the job. The crew was different, and they may have been more heavily booked than the hardscape crew - who knows. The plantings ended up looking great overall though. We had a few minor casualties, which is to be expected, but not any of the expensive stuff and I'm planning on having some fun choosing new plants to replace them this fall (which I probably would have done anyway). All of the major plants are doing great. The only thing we don't like is the grass that they planted. Our goal was to have something we wouldn't have to mow, and this was only supposed to get about 8" tall, which would have been great. It must have loved all the rain it got last spring because it grew three times longer and flopped over. It doesn't look very good, and it's covering the beautiful paver sections that it's planted around, which are a major design element. I think we'll be replacing this with something a little more tidy that will show off the paver sections. The only real issue we had was that they had a difficult time grading the patio pavers around the large sliding glass door we have opening onto the patio. This created a runoff situation that was channeling water directly toward the slider instead of away from it. Since they hadn't sealed along the bottom edge of the slider after installing the pavers, this water started running right into the house. When we called G&L Dee came over to look at the damage, which I appreciated, and sent a crew over to seal along the door. Had they sealed around the bottom of the slider when they first installed the pavers and pointed out the odd runoff pattern to us, we would have made sure we installed gutters sooner and wouldn't have had a problem. More an issue with communication than workmanship. Since the installation, they have been helpful answering questions about the irrigation system, maintenance, etc.which I really appreciate. We are planning on hiring them again to do our front yard since we loved Allie's design for the back yard and we do feel that Dee and his crew are honest, responsive and helpful. Next time though - no grass!

It was one of the Big Deals. The young lady who came out was very pleasant and took her time. She came back and sent me a design. She was friendly and very nice. She showed up on time.

Our yard had a large sloped area and a grassy area that were severely overgrown. Rick Shadley from G&L came up with a landscape design to replant these areas and a list of plants to use, including mostly drought-resistant plants. He also redesigned several flower beds and an area around a fountain. G&L did the clearance and then all the replanting over several days. Dee and his team were always punctual, very clean, professional and very responsive. We were impressed enough with their professionalism to hire them for yard maintenance as well.
