Description of Work: WORK DONE: Installed Carrier Performance Series HVAC; Installed new duct system; Insulated attic to R-38 from R-11(Sub-Contractor) | |I selected Superior Air for the following reasons: |1. They offered HVAC units manufactured by Carrier which according to my research was ranked among the top HVAC manufacturers. |2. They were listed by the Carrier Company as an authorized dealer. |3. They were listed as a Better Business Bureau accredited business with an A+ rating |4. All reviews on Angies List were positive earning them an A rating |5. During our initial meeting, the questions they asked, the comments they made, and the areas of the house that they looked at, confirmed that their philosophy was directly in line with mine. That philosophy being that a complete heating/cooling system is not just putting a unit on top of the house, but that it includes energy efficient windows, effective duct system, up to date insulation in the attic, a unit that correctly matches the make-up of the home, etc. |6. They responded to my initial phone calls and e-mails in a timely manner |7. I researched their affiliation with Southern California Edison and discovered that they are approved by Southern California Edison as an authorized contractor to assist the homeowner in receiving rebates for energy efficient upgrades; not only approved, but given SCE's highest ranking as a Platinum business. |My initial meeting with Superior Air took place on April of 2014. However, I postponed the installation of the new heating/cooling unit in order to put in new energy efficient windows. When I sent an e-mail to the company (March 2015) to resume installation plans, I expected to hear from them the next day, but was surprised to hear from them by phone within the hour. This type of prompt response was experienced up until the completion of all contracted services. |The second visit from Superior Air consisted of a survey of the inside and outside of the home to determine the correct size of unit to install. The technician arrived within the time specified, was personable, professional, and took time to explain what he was doing and how the process would work. He also described the expectations for rebates. |The third visit (Mach 13, 2015) consisted of the actual unit installation, installation of a new duct system, new registers, testing of the unit etc. Again, the technicians arrived on time and treated me with professional courtesy. The home was left reasonably clean following all of the work that was done. |Southern California Edison randomly selects homes that purchase HVAC units from Superior Air. They come to the home and review the installation to insure that all of Edison's standards have been met in order for the homeowner to qualify for Edison rebates. My home was one of those homes selected. The review took about an hour and a half and consisted of observations and tests. The home passed the inspection and I received a rebate two months after the installation. Superior Air also handled the rebate process with the Carrier Company and I received that rebate in just a few weeks. |The attic insulation was completed by a company subcontracted by Superior Air. The installers from this company were courteous and friendly. The job appeared to be done appropriately and I was able to experience the difference in how the house cooled and heated. |The final step involved the city inspection which was completed on July 1st. | |I only had two issues that I was not satisfied with and that was the insulation company's inability to communicate and provide needed documentation. I did not feel that these issues warranted a different score than the one I gave Superior Air, but the lessons learned need to be passed on: |When the heating/cooling system installment was completed by Superior Air, the lead technician informed me that I would hear from the insulation company. He told me to make sure they gave me a form indicating the square footage of insulation completed. I would need this form when applying for a rebate from the southern California gas company. After a week had transpired and I had not heard from the insulation company, I contacted Superior Air. Within 2 hours of contacting Superior Air, I received a call from the insulation company and an appointment was scheduled for them to check out the attic. After their visit, about two weeks went by without hearing from them. Superior Air contacted me to inform me that Southern California Edison would be reviewing their work on my home. At that time I informed them that the attic insulation had not been completed yet. The following day, I heard from the insulation company and a date and time for the attic insulation was set for Friday 4/10/15 in the morning. On the morning of the appointment, the company did not arrive until 11:40 AM. No call had been made from the company to inform me that they would be arriving that late. |Upon completion of the job, I asked about the form consisting of amount of square footage of insulation. The technician said a form was completed and had been attached to the attic opening. I later looked, but could not locate it. |I left an e-mail and phone message with Superior Air to inquire about the square footage form and how to obtain it. For some reason, I did not hear back from them. |I went online to the Southern California Gas Company, down loaded the necessary information and sent in an application for a rebate. The application was sent back to me indicating my request for a rebate had been denied. I did not pursue the matter any further. |The following are suggestions for Superior Air: |1. In the event that the gas has to be shut off during installation of the HVAC unit, someone needs to notify the homeowner once the gas is turned back on and suggest that the homeowner check all gas appliances to make sure that all pilot lights are on and that appliances are working correctly. |2. Prior to running the HVAC unit through various tests, if the homeowner has a security system that includes a fire alarm, have the homeowner contact the security service to place the alarm system in test mode. |The following are suggestions for the homeowner: |1. If you are planning to apply for rebates from the gas company, make sure the insulation company has committed to bringing and filling out the square footage form required by the gas company or arrange with Superior Air to make sure this is done. |2. Make sure that Superior Air provides you with a receipt clearly indicating that the insulation has been paid for. | |I am extremely pleased with the unit, insulation, and new air ducts system. These products along with new energy efficient windows purchased several months ago, appear to be making a significant difference. I keep several thermometers in different parts of the house and they confirm that the unit is maintaining the programmed temperatures. I have experienced no problems so far. |
