Larry's Custom Furniture was recommended many times over on my area's Nextdoor website, so I began to research what I might have done before I called to get an estimate. I purchased a sofa and 3 arm chairs (used but high end) and wanted to get an assessment of their current shape and potential. Larry himself made a house call, tested them out, answered my questions, and brought books of fabric swatches. It became clear I could go any number of ways with fabric type, color, slipcovers or upholstered, self-purchase fabric or utilize Larry's fabric suppliers. After a very deep dive down the rabbit hole of fabric; types, durability, online sourcing to a person NOT in the trade, varied quality of materials...(this took me 8 months) I ventured back to Larry's workshop armed with even more questions. Plus, the additional mitigating factor that now I had adopted a stray CAT (!). Larry gave me practical advice about colors (CA sun) and loopy, open weave fabrics (cats just looooove those)....and so I settled on slipcovers. Then I set out to find good quality/washable/tightly woven durable cotton in colors/patterns I could live with. I never gave up and Larry answered my every question patiently, taking time to go over my choices with me when I popped into his shop unannounced. He was my Upholstery Guru and I learned sooooo much that my friends grew weary of me talking furniture construction, down vs fiber and foam fill, fabric designers and mills, and an overall knowledge and provenance of where furniture actually comes from and the debate over new vs. vintage. It was quite the journey. I was not on a strict timeline, so if Larry got a big custom job, I was fine to wait. But when I landed a 6 month job in NYC he managed to deliver all my furniture before I departed and it was beautiful, I loved the seeming miracle of how it all came together and fit into my vision, with the craftsmanship and skills evident in all aspects of the work. I went on to also have my new dining room chairs slipcovered and springs replaced. Beautiful and practical, for life with a cat. Larry never tried to upsell me nor make inflated promises on when I could expect delivery. SO... if you are impatient, or have specific time constraint expectations, maybe this is not for you. It all can depend on the ebb and flow of business and there are times where he gets bombarded trying to fulfill multiple orders, fill the desperate pre-Holiday requests, and a lot of other scenarios. That happens when someone is worth the wait and why he has many longtime and very satisfied repeat customers. Count me among those.

Great!!! Nice, honest, fairly priced, finished in a timely manner and does amazing quality work!!! Have used several times, will use again and have referred to my friends! Larry's Custom Upholstery is a find!!! He does reupholstering as well as fixing and staining wood pieces! Highly recommend!!!

Larry and his team have a creative knack for upholstering and upgrading vintage and modern furniture. I trusted them with several Art Deco pieces, and they came back looking amazing! I have recommended this business to my friends, because their prices are reasonable and their work, outstanding.

Absolutely Wonderful!!

We hired Larry and team to reupholster a large couch with sofa bed, make linen slipcovers for club chairs, build a custom couch and loveseat set, and design and build two storage ottomans. Basically, they have reupholstered and built custom furniture for almost every room in our home and we are very happy with their work. We inherited a couple of pricey pieces for our living room that needed some TLC and to be updated, they did a great job there. When it came time to update our family room furniture, after looking at several big name stores, I just wasn’t happy with what was available. So we ended up hiring Larry again and got exactly what we wanted, built to our specifications. We’ve hired Larry for a third job and know there may be another piece ordered in the future. I’ve found I can get exactly what I’m looking for—the right size, color and maintenance requirement our home.

They did a wonderful job, surpassing my expectations. They handled the striped fabric I had chosen perfectly, and did beautiful work on the details, like the piping. They did a good job retouching the damage on the chair legs.

They made an appointment to come to my home. And they never came or called!

We'd used Larry before for our Mother's sofa & chairs, and to be fair, Larry did an excellent job on those items. At that time (Easter 2 yrs ago) the job was done perfectly and in a timely manner. THIS time, however, our job got done but the awning for the swing set did not fit properly. They came back a couple of times to try to jury rig the fit, but since they had cut the material too short, the awning did not look like the one I sent with them to be copied and it did not fit well. He kept saying that the problem was that the metal awning frame would not come off so it was hard for them to fit it - but it the real problem was that they had just cut the material too short. At one point Larry admitted that "she" (presumably his fabric cutter) did just that. If they had just followed the simple pattern of the awning they had taken away, there would not have been any problems. OK, so I decided to let it go to see if I could live with the jury rig but after a couple of months I called Larry & asked if they could just re-do the whole awning top. Larry said he was very busy and short staffed, to which I said I understood but he made a morning appointment with me for later in the week to look at it again and (hopefully) do something about it. That morning came & went with no Larry. I called back & the scenario repeated itself twice more. So three weeks in a row Larry stood me up for the scheduled appointment. Not even a call to let me know he wouldn't come. Are we that hard to please? I think not. Example: we had provided him with a fair size sample of dark red leather that we wanted our indoor arm chair pads built/recovered in. He said he had the exact same leather & he would get us a piece of it for the job. The job came back & we were surprised to see a bright cherry red shiny leather, not the dark understated matte red leather that we said we wanted. I never brought it up, it was not that big of a deal, although clearly the reds were very different! I probably would use Larry again if enough time goes by that he forgets this negative review & I am willing to trust him again. Just be sure what you have him doing is exactly what you intended BEFORE you pay him because in our opinion his diligence with follow up is seriously lacking.

The job was to take 2 weeks. It took over 2 months which included his losing the chair, recovering it with the wrong fabric, losing my fabric, forgetting to repair 2 pillows and not delivering the chair. The cost of the work was zero. The $150 I paid him was for additional fabric he used.

THEIR RELIABLE SERVICE IS TOP-NOTCH, COUPLED WITH VERY REASONABLE PRICES. MY CLIENT HAD METAL BARSTOOLS THAT NEEDED TO BE RE-PAINTED AND DINING CHAIRS THAT NEED TO BE REFINISHED IN ADDITION TO UPHOLSTERY. THE BARSTOOLS CAME BACK PERFECT WHILE THE DINING CHAIRS WERE SLIGHTLY OFF. THEY RE-STAINED THE CHAIRS WITH NO QUESTIONS ASKED, NO PROBLEMS. THEY THEN DELIVERED THEM TO ME IN THE PERFECT COLOR SHORTLY THEREAFTER.
