On time and on budget! Employees were fantastic - knowledgeable, professional and friendly. Owner listened to our needs, did not oversell, knew the changes in county regulations and reimbursements, and even called back right away when one of the newly installed pipes sprung a leak in the attic in the middle of the night! They fixed problems right away. They worked hard to get the project done in time so we could take advantage of county rebates before they expired at the end of the year. They were successful in spite of the challenges our house presented them with, including the removal of years-old pigeon poop-hardened insulation in the attic! These guys are well worth every dollar we spent with them, and we recommend them to anyone who is looking to increase their home's energy efficiency! They also do regular house repairs too.
Description of Work: Replaced HVAC system, replaced insulation and air ducts in attic, moved water heater, insulated walls, upgraded electric.

They first sent two people to conduct a thorough energy efficiency audit. We were very impressed with how thoroughly and professionally they conducted the audit. The audit itself took about 3 hours. A week later, Andrew D. (the owner, I think) himself came and gave a thorough review of our home with a full 3-ring binder with recommended actions. We met with him for over an hour. Andrew is a *very* knowledgeable person and seems trustworthy also. He was honest, wasn't very pushy - and he explained the values of various services well. We then scheduled another free "walk-in" - which would lead to some pricing for various services we could pursue with them. Andrew also offered to meet with us at a windows dealer to go over various options. We were very impressed with the service. We are still in the process of deciding on various energy-saving measures, and we may very well go with some of their recommended options once we receive the cost estimates. But as for the energy efficiency audit part, we think it's a no brainer. We will definitely recommend them to our friends. Very highly recommended!!!

This company is fantastic, from Andrew, the owner, to every workman who came through my door. They were on time, kept everything as clean as possible, and explained every step of the way and did a quality job. The sunrrom was impossible to use before we did the work, but now is a usable room and overall, the house was cooler after the work was done. They have done a number of jobs on our street, and everyone is happy. We would recommend them without reservation.
Description of Work: We first had an energy audit. Based on that, we decided to reconstruct duct work in crawl space and attic, insulate attic and under house, replace windows in sunporch, insulate walls and ceiling of sunporch, and remove and replace knob and tube wiring in attic and repair some misc wiring.

I called and left this provider with a voice message stating that I was interested in having a home energy inspection, even though I knew that I was already interested in service for improved attic insulation and adding exterior wall insulation. I can understand not being able to make instant contact to set-up an appointment, but they did not call back until nearly four business days had passed (I left them a message at 10am on a Monday and they did not call back until 4:45pm on the following Thursday). Hence, I went with a different provider.

I just bought my house and wanted the A/C to be checked and cleaned, so a $79 (or $69?) deal seemed great. In addition to cleaning out the A/C two addition people showed up to conduct a home energy audit. I was very impressed with the tests conducted. The two people spent about 4 hours at my house checking the ducts and seeing how much air was being lost through the house. I was very impressed with their professionalism and enthusiasm with their job. After they were finished a third guy came over to clean the A/C. He was not able to clean the compressor coils (I think that is what they are called), which was disappointing (I did not quite understand why, except they were hard to reach). So, overall I was impressed with this step. After this was done I was supposed to schedule an appointment to talk about what they found. This took a great deal of time (almost 2 months) in part because I was travelling and in part because the person making the appointments seemed completely overwhelmed. So, my biggest complaint is that making the appointments seemed to take too much effort, but I was very satisfied with the work and plan to use the company in the future to help insulate my house.

The people at Home Performance Matters Inc. were professional from start to finish. They contacted me immediately through email to say they were looking forward to doing business with me after I purchased their "big deal." I appreciated that. The day of the service the gentlemen that came out were very professional and polite and I liked that they wore those nice big socks over their shoes. They measured the airflow from our vents, measured and inspected our insulation, inspected our ducting, and, our air conditioner received a tune up. A few weeks later my husband met with one of their energy consultants who went over the results of our home energy assessment. The assessment was very specific about changes we could make to lower our home energy costs. While we cannot afford to make the changes at this time, we will contact Home Performance Matters Inc. to make these changes in the future.

Home Performance Matters Inc. are real nice people. They're very professional and seem to know what they're doing. The stuff they did was not easy to do. They had two people and spent a lot, all day.
Description of Work: I purchased an Angie's Big Deal to get an energy assessment on my home. They check the air conditioning system. They clean the debris out of the condenser unit. They went up to the attic to check the evaporator. They flush the drains. They also checked the air flow. We're still not done yet. We got the assessment done and they'll be coming over tomorrow for the next step. I only paid the initial price of the Big Deal. There were no extra charges.

HPM did an amazing job all around. They were on time everyday and very clean. (Insulation is a very dusty job) All the employees that work on our project were very professional and easy to work with. Since the first meeting with the owner we were very well informed of the process and given a full energy report. They are very patient and explain why and what the benefits to each job.. The whole process took four days and one extra day for touch ups. I would highly recommend HPM.

I brought the offer and scheduled service the same day with Lisa. The serviceman were on time and respected my home. They put in over three hours on my unit, cleaning 30 years of wear. Since my unit is 30 years old I was sure they would push me to replace it immediately. But they didn't. Andrew met with me a few days later and went over all the issues with my AC unit and my homes energy use. He reviewed my homes R-values (insulation issues), airflow delivery, duct conditions and lighting. He brought a binder with everything they did in writing. It was all easy to understand and I have a copy for future reference. He made suggestions for things I could do myself (CFL bulbs) (keeping my pets away from the condenser units, so pet hair did not get into it) and what they could do for me to improve my homes energy use. He went over energy credits and rebates and consumer loans. He went over my options, such a redoing the attic insulation, duct work and new systems. But not once did I feel pressured to purchase anything. He offered their services for future repairs if needed and a complete estimate on a new unit. I feel I got my moneys worth and more. When the times comes for me to replace my AC "Home Performance Matters" will be my first call, maybe on only.
Description of Work: They did everything they said they would do in the offer (AC tune up and energy review) and more. They replaced a leaky part that needed to be replaced to keep my system working and my home safe at no extra charge.

We had a home energy assessment and decided to do the insulation of the walls and attic and some other things. We were so pleased with the work that was done at our home. The job was completed on schedule, the quality of the work was excellent, and the finish work and clean up was done right. Everyone in the company was polite; from our first contact with Lisa, then Andrew, down to every worker on the crew. I can't say enough about the crew that was sent out; they were the nicest and most hard working group of guys. I highly recommend them! We have since had several other projects done through HPM with the same high standards of quality of work and customer service.

I first had them do a home energy audit so I could make the best economical decisions. They explained all my options and help me rank them in order of what would save the most money and/or make my home more comfortable. For example, they were able to show me how insulating my attic before getting solar (I live in an old house) would mean I could get a smaller solar system and save money in the long run. So, I did some other energy-related projects that lowered my utility bills, before deciding to get solar. When I decided I wanted to get solar, I did even more energy efficiency work with HPM. Before I signed the contract for the job, they went over all the rebates and made sure I understood the whole process. After the job started, they always let me know when they would be here, knocked on my door to let me know they'd arrived, and showed up when they said they would. If they were running a little late, I got a phone call so I knew what was going on. They never pulled a no-show, unlike other contractors I've worked with. They were also always pleasant when I phoned them and are happy to do business by telephone. They are also tech savvy and are glad to use email and texts if that's what the client prefers. But with me, they started out using the telephone, and then when I wanted to communicate more with emails and texts, we did that. Home Performance Matters was reasonable about scheduling appointments to accommodate my work schedule (including after the contract was signed). I really appreciated not having to take time off from my job. They are professionals who respect other people's time. I love not having to think about an electrical bill. So far, I've used a few dollars of electricity or gotten a credit for a few dollars each month. The credits and bills have never been more than $5, which means they're canceling each other out, so we did a good job of planning how much solar to install.
Description of Work: Home Performance Matters installed 14 solar panels on my roof for a 2.807 kW system. After it was installed, they kept me informed about when the electric company was going to inspect the job, which has to happen before it can be turned on. After it was turned on, they gave me a one-to-one lesson on how to login to the computer monitoring system to I can easily track how much energy my solar system generates and let me know there is a mobile version so I can check it on my phone if I want. They also handled all the rebates and paperwork for me. The out-of-pocket cost listed above was what I paid after the discount of $6,148 given because I also did other energy efficiency work at the same time. The final cost was even less after rebates and tax credits. They also told me about a credit union that gave me a 2% loan for the project.

For those who would prefer a more thoughtful review, first let me say that there are many complex variables to consider before installing a Solar System (PV). I assume that if you are reading this review, you are familiar with the various factors including incentives, your own energy needs and the tiered cost structure of your energy company. These all influence the system you eventually choose. HPM and specifically Andrew Durben (the owner) was extremely knowledgeable and provided us with both pros and cons to help us make a thoughtful decision. For instance, several installers we considered were reluctant to discuss micro inverters and insisted that standard inverters were better. Andrew took the time to explain the pros and cons of the two systems. The key difference is scalability which was important to us. We spoke with 5 installers and had 3 provide bids. Surprisingly, I would say that costs were roughly comparable in terms of dollars per KwH installed when comparing similar systems (standard to standard) or (microinverter to microinverter). However, total price for the project differed as some installers tried to push for larger systems. Because of tiered cost structure of energy companies, returns diminish the more energy installed. Trying to match production of energy for KW used may not be a cost effective decision. In this regard, I appreciated HPM?s integrity. As I mentioned earlier regarding the work itself, they were efficient, friendly and on time. In a project such as this were there are several moving parts to coordinate (electrician, meeting with city inspector, meeting with Edison reps, etc?), HPM kept us in the loop and communicated with us quickly in the event something changed. With other contractors I have dealt with, effective communication is often not the case. This then create ?emergencies? for you to deal with in order to get the work done on time. In addition, they processed our rebates quickly such that there was not significant lag time in getting reimbursement. The final system?s rated amount of energy production was a compromise between what HPM and other installers recommended. At this time, 6 months after install, we have a slight surplus. As it is the end of April 2013, we will likely have a significant surplus in energy after the summer. Though Andrew may have been correct in saying that this system is more energy than we need now; however, our system allows some wiggle room for degradation and possible increase in future energy needs. The takeaway is that the specifics of our system match our needs. This was made clearer by the information Andrew provided. It is important to have the right information when planning so you are not left with a system that does not suit you. For this reason and the professionalism of their work, I strongly recommend HPM.
Description of Work: We purchased a solar system from Home Performance Matters in August 2012. The work was completed in September 2012. I am writing this review to communicate the excellent experience we had with HPM and recommend them without reservation. For those who want the nuts and bolts, I would say that HPM was timely, efficient, competitively priced, knowledgeable, friendly and communicated effectively with us during the entire process. Coordination of their work with our schedule was seamless with minimal inconvenience. HPM went the extra mile to make sure we were happy with the work. The system that was eventually installed was for a 6.86 kW system that utilized microinverters. Microinverters were about 33% more than quote for standard inverters but the scalability factor was important to us. The job basically entailed removing roof tiles, placing inverter/solar panels and replacing tiles. In between, the electricians hooked connected the system into our electrical system. After this was completed, HPM then met with city inspectors, Edison electric for approval process. HPM then processed all rebates, specifically California state and federal. Currently, the system is hooked in online such that we can check our energy production. This can be done in daily, weekly, monthly, annual or total time frame. In addition, each panel can be monitored and not just the entire system. In this way, we can check to see that each panel is working properly and theoretically be able to catch a malfunction if one stops producing. Nothing like this thus far.

I had interviewed four companies regarding energy audits with a focus of a whole house as a system approach. Home Performance matters was the only company that also had that vision and focus to their approach on energy efficiency, effectiveness and the need for an audit. I was very impressed at the start when I first contacted and spoke with Lisa who was extremely personable as well as knowledgeable about the companies approach and abilities, as well as her noted loyalty and confidence as a team member. Lisa listened to my concerns and asked appropriate questions to determine how to advise me on the process and procedures. This was invaluable to me as a novice in this area. An audit was scheduled in the next few days as well as helpful information being sent to me that same day. With in that information was a letter of instruction that provided both the name and picture of the auditor Daniel Sams, who arrived promptly and took the time to discuss with my concerns and what I was looking to accomplish. Daniel then went to work and thoroughly tested our home to enable a detailed analysis and recommendations so that those concerns as well as others I had not noted were addressed. The following week Andrew also promptly arrived at the house and provided me with a detailed review with recommendations that made sense as well as reasonably priced. A particular point that I would like to make, and one that I fell encapsulates this companies integrity is although one of the two cooling systems I have is not running at maximum efficiency I was offered alternative measures, not a recommendation to purchase a new system, to increase the efficiency of the system, as the current system still has some life to it. I just want to say what a pleasure this experience has been with this team of true professionals.
Description of Work: I had an energy audit performed on my home, to determine where I could make effective changes to enable our home to be more efficient and comfortable. I have made quiet a few changes to our home over the years, but without any outside testing and felt it was time to get a professional in to assist me in the next round of decisions in a whole house or system approach. I diffidently chose the right company to assist me.

I learned of Home Performance Matters through their thoughtful, low key presentation at a local service club. Faced with my aging home cooling and heating systems I was intrigued by the possibilty of replacing the units while achieving significant energy savings. Further research revealed that the company already had a number of enthusiastic customers in the community. Given my need and their reputation, I chose to go with Home Performance Matters - and I'm glad I did. A complete home energy audit was conducted prior to any agreement or work was started. Suggestions for the project were based on a careful review of audit results. Their recommendations were presented in a low key manner along with with options and alternatives. High-pressure is simply not their style. The construction phase of the project went exceptionally well. The work was completed as planned and on time. I was frequently consulted by those responsible as to my satisfaction of the progress being made. The smooth progress of the project was especially noteworthy as several trades were involved. Also extremely helpful was their help in applying for and receiving various local and state energy efficiency rebates that were available. In summary, I give Home Performance Matters two thumbs up. Their work - from beginnng to end - was on budget and exceeded expectations.
Description of Work: Complete energy retrofit of my home including: Energy audit, attic insulation, duct replacement and repair, crawl space sealing, asbestos removal, patching and painting, installation of new hydronic air handler and AC unit.
