Kevin came highly referred to me from a friend at work who said he and his neighbors use him repeatedly and have been very happy with his work. I was torn between the various types of hardscape (concrete v pavers v flagstone) and appreciated that Kevin seemed to take the time (initially) to help me understand my options and the pros/cons of each choice. I was initially leaning toward the affordability of stamped concrete, but he highly advised against it stating that I will have to restain it each year at a very high price (appx. $1000/year). I told him I was ready for him to start on the grading and drainage, but i needed some time to wait for my designer to figure out the plan that would work best. The day he arrived to do the grading work, he told me i would have to make the hardscape decision by the next day or else he could not do the other work. If I was thinking correctly, I would have stopped him right there and told him to come back another day. But foolishly, I let him dictate the schedule and made a very fast choice to go with the flagstone. I also told him that he was higher than some of the other bids and told him I needed to work within my budget. I asked if I could go buy the material and he could bid the job as labor only. He said I would not benefit from that arrangement and that he would pass on his discount to me. He also refused to budge on his prices, but we did remove some work from scope so I could get slightly closer to my budget. I had showed him a picture of the exact look I wanted before he provided me a bid. He assured me that he could get me the look i wanted and even offered to blend a few colors together (50/50) so that we could get the variance i was looking for. When he arrived with samples the next day, none of the four options were even CLOSE to the look I desired. When I showed him the picture again, he told me to go to RCP, pick out the material I wanted (as long as it was +/- 1" 1/2) and he would get it. I went that day, picked out the two color blends i wanted and told him that afternoon. The next time I saw him, he said the new material choice was going to cost an extra $1000. He showed me an estimate from RCP for the price of the "original" material versus the price of the "new" material. I was angry that he wanted to charge me more when I thought he bid based on the style of flagstone I showed him. The next morning, he showed up with the first crateload of material. Thank god I was there to see it before he started laying it down .. the stone he had was full of orange/rust with heavy gold specks - not even CLOSE to the blue/grey look I wanted and had showed him 4 TIMES in the picture. By this time, I am mad! He told me that he picked out the exact color I told him, but w
