This guy must have been having a really bad day when I called to inquire about these rather ordinary repairs/replacements. He was very negative and unpleasant, warning me about potential problems, how replacing the shower head might cause the pipe to break, requiring tearing out the tile and wall, no guarantees, etc. He wanted $150 to come out to my house (6 miles away) but could not promise that he could do any of the work. But I'd owe him $150 anyway. I called another plumber who was very positive and pleasant. He came out and got all the work done, no problem, no complaining. McMahon was so negative and unpleasant; I've really never experienced anything like it, which is why I'm willing to consider the possibility that he was having a bad day or week or something. He could be a great plumber but I wouldn't know because he was so unpleasant on the phone and got so angry at me for questioning the $150 that we agreed we didn't want to have anything to do with each other.
Description of Work: Repair/replace shower head, bathroom faucet, outdoor spigot, all of which were leaking.

Response from McMahon's Plumbing
Since I was threatened with this negative review, it came as no surprise when I found it this morning. Kudos to Angie's List for providing businesses an opportunity to respond to negative reviews. This review is a great example of someone who blends some truth with fiction in order to force the narrative to go their way. This person didn't call me as she has stated. Her husband left me a voicemail while I was under a sink and couldn't get to my phone. I returned his call as soon as possible and we began to discuss his particular needs. At one point it became clear that he wanted me to [Member Information Removed] out to his residence and provide him with a consultation without compensating me for my time. I informed him that I do not provide free estimates or consultations. He must have had me on speaker phone because he told me he was going to put me on the phone with his wife because " she's the shower head expert ". I began to discuss the shower head issue with his wife. This person had an attitude right off the bat. She was clearly out of her element. She is telling the truth with regards to my explanation of what could go wrong. Anyone with even a smattering of plumbing experience probably knows that when a pipe sticking out of a wall is screwed into a fitting concealed in the wall of a thirty year old house anything can happen when you start torquing on that pipe with a wrench. I clearly stated that what I described was a worst case scenario. I told her it was in no way probable but certainly possible. She describes my phone etiquette as negative and unpleasant. In my world it's called honest and truthful. At no time did I raise my voice or use profanity. Some people like to accuse others of being negative when they don't get what they want. She wanted me to [Member Information Removed] twenty-six miles one way to give her husband a free plumbing lesson. She asked me to [Member Information Removed] out to her house. I told her I would but would have to charge her for my time. She asked me how much I would charge her. I told her a basic service call was $150.00 and that would cover the first hour and a half. I said that if it ran longer than an hour and a half the service call charge would not apply and she would be billed at $95.00 an hour from the time I arrived until the time I finished. At that point she told me how six months ago she hired a plumber to do repairs on her house in the bay area. She said he showed up and couldn't fix anything but charged her anyway. She said she then called another plumber and he came out and fixed everything and said he didn't know what the first plumbers problem was. Sound familiar? Read her review. I told her that I had been doing this for a long time, had a one ton fully stocked service vehicle and would be happy to [Member Information Removed] out and perform repairs for her but would not [Member Information Removed] to her home without charging her for my time. At that point she became abusive. I suggested that she might be more comfortable calling someone else. Right around then she threatened me with a negative Angie's List review. I asked her what justification she had for a negative review. Because I wouldn't come to her house without charging her? At that point she became enraged. I again suggested that she call someone else. I thanked her for her interest and said goodbye. I make no apologies for not providing free services. I spend countless hours keeping my service vehicle fully stocked and road worthy. The mechanic who works on my truck charges a $130.00 diagnostic fee just to look at it. And I have to bring my truck to him. He doesn't come to me. The last repair I paid for a few months back cost $3,800.00. Why would I choose to make it available to non paying customers? Why would I choose to provide free services when I could be focusing on my paying customers? Anyone who would choose to do so wouldn't last long in my business. I'm blessed with an abundance of regular customers who appreciate my abilities and professionalism. Whoever would like to read truthful reviews and recommendations from actual paying customers may feel free to visit my website: mcmahonsplumbing.com. Check out the testimonials page. This Angie's List review is the result of a phone conversation. It's unfortunate that she would try to damage my business simply because I refused to be bullied or intimidated. I find it sad that someone her age would lie and lash out like a child because she didn't get her way. Very sad. Take note of how angry her review is. It speaks for itself. Thank you for listening.

He showed up on time, was professional and fix the leak. It took about half an hour and used a new flexible line and valve. It did seem that $185 was a little high.

Response from McMahon's Plumbing
A basic service call is 150.00. That's the bare minimum I have to charge to make any money at all. I remember this call. Someone had done a do it yourself repair to the line before I arrived. It was jerry-rigged with plastic hose bought at Ace Hardware and hose clamps. It was the customers good fortune to have it repaired correctly at all. When you factor in time spent on site, travel time to and from the job, fuel, wear, tear and depreciation on my one ton service vehicle, un-billable hours keeping the service vehicle fully stocked and road worthy, 150.00 is quite the bargain considering the cost of providing a professional service in a timely manner. The materials included a new 5/8" x 1/4" compression angle stop, a 1/4" brass compression coupling and a 5' braided stainless steel supply line, for thirty five bucks.Google the mark up on that amount that most plumbers charge. It's a chart that's readily available if you're really interested. A service call like this takes up one half of my day all things considered. Mechanics fees to keep my service vehicle on the road average 1,000.00 each time I have to take it in. Not to mention lost revenue and personal time I will never get back when I have to wait to have the repairs performed. I can't see why someone would figure that $185.00 seems a little high. It's a great value all things considered. Comments like this are one of the reasons that a lot of plumbing service providers don't even return messages from people with these small repair issues.
