Description of Work: After plumbing leak, Deco helped us with complete kitchen remodel, including removal of dropped ceiling; drywall repair, new flooring and new lighting in kitchen and two adjoining rooms. They also painted those 3 rooms plus a large, 2-story living room, and upstairs hallway and replaced old carpeted stairs with new oak staircase. With their help we chose and designed all new cabinetry and new granite countertops. |Fred, the contractor is very amiable and easy to work with; he listens to what you want and makes very helpful suggestions. He has a large showroom with samples many of the most often chosen cabinets, countertop materials, flooring, etc. He offers connections to local dealers for appliances, carpets, etc. but is willing to let customer buy from outside retailers & just perform installation. Deco also installed stovetop, oven, microwave, dishwasher, pendant lighting, sink and refrigerator we had purchased from other retailers. |Fred has several work crews, many of whom are multi-disciplined. All were friendly, honest and hard-working. Several were exceptionally talented. Deco kept us informed of work schedule and costs, and we easily added tasks, getting an updated cost and schedule estimate each time. |We were very pleased with our experience with Deco Construction, with the quality of their work and especially with their personnel. We would highly recommend them.

We were immediately impressed with the knowledge and experience of Fred, the general contractor and owner of DECO construction. We were happy with all his workers, and they showed up on time six days a week for the duration of the project. Every day Fred would stop by and check on progress and talk with us. Two weeks into the project, I had an accident while walking outside and had to spend two weeks in the hospital. I was so surprised when Fred showed up at the hospital with flowers. He knew how busy my husband was, and without being asked, he went shopping for a mirror, and took care or other details that we weren't able to do because of my condition. Many times, he brought samples of tiles, paint colors, etc to my bedside to discuss various choices, and helped us throughout the process. He maintained his professionalism throughout the project. Now we not only have a beautiful new bathroom, we also have a contractor that we won't hesitate to call on for future projects. Thank you, Fred!

I called Deco Construction on a Saturday night expecting to leave a message. The owner Fred Ektekhari answered the phone, I discussed my remodel with him and scheduled a Monday morning appt. He arrived on time, prepared, taking very detailed meticulous notes with excellent handwriting. I figured if his work is as neat as his penmanship then this is the contractor I have been waiting two years for. I've interviewed several contractors referred by friends, associates and strangers, I was about to give up and then I saw an Angie's List advertisement; so glad I paid the small fee for membership. After reading the other reviews on Deco Construction, Fred was the first and only contractor I called from Angie's List. My project turned out better than I imagined due to Fred's easy going nature, excellent suggestions and good taste. Fred is very experienced at his work making many recommendations based on the age/character of my house, and my vision for the remodel. He would always give me the pros and cons of materials, installation potential issues, getting the most value for my money, etc. He also has a show room (by appt only) where I was able to narrow my search for cabinets, travertine, windows, granite, etc. He has arrangements with many local showrooms and I visited a few for comparison. In the last two years I've been to many warehouses and kind of knew what I wanted. So having his showroom really helped me. In the age of the internet it was easy to get second opinions and research his suggestions. It turns out he was accurate in his comments/suggestions. After discussing my remodel plan, within a few days he returned with an itemized list- pricing the demolition to the installation, breaking out the payment schedule for each portion of the work . Other contractors I had interviewed gave a lump sum for the project. However with Fred's itemized schedule I could easily compare the pricing with my local store and online resources for each portion of the project. It turns out Fred isn't the cheapest contractor on the block however, my motto is "sometimes you get surprises when you go the cheap route" I don't like costly surprises and I explained this to Fred the first day. My biggest fear is a contractor nickel and dime me due to" unforseen issues". If you are a true expert there shouldn't be costly unforseen circumstances. Fred assured me he was experienced enough to know what obstacles he may or may not face before he would take a job. So, he said there would be no hidden cost. Although, there was a pretty big permit fee charged by our city to inspect and sign off on the job. I hadn't expected this-but I did budget for the unexpected. I'm still waiting on the final walk thru by the city inspector. Hopefully soon !!! After meeting Fred and having a favorable gut feel for the man and his knowledge, I went to the State of California's contractors website to check Deco Contstructon's license/ ownership and also read valuable information on hiring a contractor with homeowners rights, disclosures that should be given, payment schedules, etc. I also discussed the disclosures with my company attorney wanting to understand my rights if things didn't go as planned. Also, I reviewed the Better Business Bureau's website on the company and ownership. And of of course, I had read the reviews from Angie's List. After my due diligence I signed the contract with Fred. He presented to me every disclosure the State said I should get and the itemized pricing. His workers started on schedule, and came to my house from 7:45 am - 5:00 or 5:30 pm Mon - Fri and Sat from 8:00 am - 2 or 3pm. for 4 weeks. These men are skilled, hard workers and will work until the job is done right. Each morning I would ask them what were they going to do today and how it would be done. They patiently explained in detail making sure I was agreeable to the plan for the day and as I stopped in thru out the day, they always asked if I was happy with the work. They weren't discouraged by me adding little task or suggestions and took the time to explain why they did things a certain way. I'm not in the remodel business so this was very new to me and interesting; I could also see they take a lot of pride in their work explaining the short and long term implications of certain materials/install. I was really appreciative of their time and ability to educate me. Every evening they cleaned up and returned the furniture pretty close to the original place. I want to warn the ladies ---- there will be DUST and a lot of it with a remodel so cover your furniture, even if you think there won't be. Better safe than sorry; I really didn't anticipate all of the dust - every time I thought they were finished in a certain room or area there was more to be done - I finally stopped dusting the furniture and waited until the job (or room was done). Although the workers cleaned up everyday - I am a woman and being dust free is a virtue. Fred came by every day to give direction and update me on the day's happenings ! The entire remodel came in on time and on budget. I will be calling Deco Construction next year for my upstairs remodel.

Several weeks ago, we had sprung a leak in the master bathroom of our 4 bed 3 bath 2400 sqft Palos Verdes tract house built in 1968. The small master bath is a 6x6 space with a stall shower, toilet, and 6' vanity (single sink), all original to the house. Given the leak staining the ceiling below (the shower's on the second story, and had been leaking outside the stall for some time), we decided to upgrade the shower to a tile shower. We bid several contractors, including DECO Construction (which is really Fred) that we found on Angie's List. While we worried during his look at the job that he was so concerned with quality that we should cover our wallets, he turned out to be low bidder, and, importantly, bid the ENTIRE job. The others forgot to consider that the bathroom would need to be painted, and that the acoustic ceiling below would need to be repaired. We told Fred we would need a contract and a permit, and he sent us to select the tile and shower valve. We did so, and he showed up with the contract properly made out with a promised start and completion date (totally reasonable and acceptable). The job started on time, and throughout, Fred's crew (who have been with him forever) showed up on time (8:30), left on time (5-5:30), and were remarkably quiet, pleasant and totally professional. Halfway through, we decided that we should consider replacing the vanity countertop with a one-piece granite one. Fred responded with a reasonable quote for this change and sent us to his supplier for the granite. They were outstanding, and the countertop is in place (with a new sink and faucet). At the same time, Fred suggested that we install a tile niche in the shower to hold soaps, shampoos, etc, and that we should consider using the tile bullnose pieces to replace the wooden molding around the floor edges (did I mention we tiled the floor as well??). These suggestions, added at small cost, really added to the appearance of the completed job. Fred also added new hinges and pulls for the vanity and matching hinges for the door. You can trust his taste and should listen to his suggestions. It's been two weeks now, and our new bathroom is complete. Fred is just about a family member. This has been the second time since we moved to Palos Verdes 30 years ago that we have needed a contractor. It has been a truly pleasant experience, for which we thank both Angie's List and Fred. I doubt we will do another job requiring a contractor without calling him back.

Simply wonderful! We cannot nearly express how happy we are with DECO Construction. From beginning to end, Fred was just fabulous. He is direct and to the point, but he is an outstanding listener and catches the nuances and preferences of the client. He is very polite and is never condescending or insulting to those of us who truly had no clue what we wanted, how much it might be, what to expect at all. The entire job went very, very smooth and easy for us, and we had never undertaken any sort of remodel or contractor work. Our job was a middle-class, 3 bed/2 bath, one-story house in the South Bay. Of the 4 or 5 estimates, DECO was about middle. There was quite a bit of variation on individual items across the estimates. We are extremely budget-conscious and afraid that the necessary repairs would greatly exceed our plans. The damage to the house was far greater than we anticipated. The house had been badly neglected for almost 20 years, and it smelled of pet waste throughout. Windows were cracked, misfitted and not working; floors were eaten away by termites; the kitchen was beyond filthy with four layers of peeilng linoleum; showers were badly rotten and filthy; paint was peeling and chipping all over. It began as a nightmare, and at several points we were not sure if wanted to fix it or just sell it and be rid of the problem because the cost of just the basic repair would be much higher than we anticipated to just clean and rent the house. Eventually we decided to continue with a renovation. We wondered whether he would really show up every day to the job site, and he did. He made this project very personal and put his heart into it - which made all the difference. We chose Fred from among about 4 other contractors because he was the most reliable and timely in his estimates and paperwork, and he always showed up on time or called if he was running late. The first time he saw the incredible, hideous mess, we asked him to only estimate a small portion of the work. We thought we'd be able to handle the other stuff. It quicky became overwhelming to us in a matter of weeks, and we sheepishly called him back, along with 4 other contractors. We chose Fred because he was very patient and persistent, and he was willing to come back two or three more times to finish our estimates. We really had no idea what we were doing as we began. The other contractors either lost interest or they were very careless with the house. Two dropped the old garage door so that it slammed on the rickety frame. One of those two also dropped a window from about a foot high, and I was surprised it did not shatter. Fred was very careful and respectful, where the other two made excuses and did not bother to apologize. These other two were rated extremely high on Angie's List with many more ratings than DECO. However, we did not feel comfortable that they would treat the house with care since they already didn't seem to mind being rough in these early stages. We signed the contract with DECO and had very low expectations, knowing that the vast majority of contractors underdeliver, if they complete the job at all. And often if they complete the job, it is sorely lacking and requires another contractor to "fix" what was done incorrectly. After signing the contract and true to the other reviews, Fred brought in a crew of 4-5 men a day for the duration of the project. All five were very polite and considerate. They worked quickly and efficiently. They appeared to their 30s or 40s with a sense of experience and maturity and teamwork. On the last couple of days one younger person was brought in for paint touch-ups, and he was just as nice as the others. It was a huge relief to me that his people were so courteous because I dreaded working with construction people who might easily be rude and crass. In retrospect, we feel that one huge advantage in choosing DECO Construction is that Fred has impeccable taste. His customer base includes a good number of higher end clients, and his selections for the home reflect that. He is familiar with what is most current as well as practical and durable. As we got to know him, his personal experience includes living in Germany and France (Paris) doing the same line of work, so his perspective is much wider than simply SoCal. He has a natural sense for aesthetics. That said, my own tastes are slightly more traditional and lighter/feminine, so there were times when we deviated, and Fred was always very amenable to any preferences of ours, even if it was different from ours. If you don't have strong preferences or can't decide, you simply cannot go wrong with his choices. For example, his paint color choices were just beautiful. The yellow in our kitchen is the most charming and perfect shade that I would never have been able to find in the hundreds of choices available. The standard off-white is just perfect for the cabinets and walls. His preferred sky blue shade is just right for the guest bath. The master bath took some work, but we finally arrived on a beautiful lavender-tinted light blue. I hate bathtub enclosures, but he convinced us it was necessary to protect the walls, and he insisted it was a beautiful door. Hard for me to believe since I hate cleaning those doors. But he was absolutely right; the tub is just stunning with these new doors. His selection of front and side exterior doors were just incredible! His men stained the front door to a perfect color to match the dark laminate floor. Fred listens very carefully to your preferences and incorporates them into his purchases. I had a preference for some glass etching, but not too much, to preserve privacy. He found a door that is just so wonderful - beyond what I could've asked for. It's really perfect. I love it!! And the back door has a charming window which adds so much warmth to the kitchen nook. The dark laminate, distressed finish, is exactly what I'd envisioned. It's stunning. The carpeting is grand and so plush. The color he chose matches and blends with the laminate and both the bathroom and kitchen tile. Almost forgot - the best of his work is the remodel of a dead-ugly carpeted bath area with a filthy, moldy shower and toilet on a rotting floor that included a sewing cabinet from the 60s -- into a gorgeous master bath AND WALK-IN CLOSET!!! We were first going to simply call it a storage area and rip everything out and leave a working toilet and clean floor until maybe at some later time we had a budget to do this. But with the rising cost of gas and materials, we decided to spend the absolute minimum to make the conversion. Now it is absolutely beautiful, and what female on earth wouldn't love a walk-in closet?! On the very first estimate Fred had the vision of this remodel, and we just considered it a pipe dream. But he and his men made it become a reality, and we are so thrilled. A few notes - we insisted on quartz (brand Cambria - which is the only U.S.-made quartz product) countertops rather than granite, even though the price was higher. With quartz there is no sealing necessary, and there is little to no radon emission. And I had decided at the beginning of the project that I wanted the most expensive product in the house to be made in the U.S. Also because we had four layers of hideous and peeling linoleum in the kitchen, we chose to "float" the tile, rather than using the standard cement board. We located an outstanding tile guy who worked together very well with Fred and his crew. Fred has already referred work to our tile man. I mention this only if you are particular about how the tile is installed. Cement board meets code; however, we had such extensive moisture damage beneath the floor and behind the walls, that we wanted a thicker layer of cement underlying the tile. At the time of this writing, it appears that some Angie's List members were asking for review of kitchen and bath remodel. Because of our budget, we tried to go "cheap" and found independents for the kitchen. It was Fred who pasted together these disparate pieces and made it a work of art in the end. We might have gone with Fred in the kitchen, in retrospect; however, it is very clear to us that he is the one who made the whole thing flow. The two baths, one renovated, one remodeled, are just beautiful. The remodel included building a new interior wall, completely removing the old plumbing and adding new pipes and drains, installing a new window in the exterior wall, demolishing the old shower, adding a new shower/tub, demolishing the old floor and subfloor, installing all hardware and accessories (vanity, mirror, light, heating, medicine cabinet, towel rings, robe hooks). On the less glamorous side, we had our cabinets refaced by a friend, who did a nice job with the cheapest materials as we requested. But it was not necessarily on par with the quality of work that Fred is accustomed. Fred made many recommendations to the smallest detail on how to trim, repair, cover the cabinets, fix the mistakes, etc., so that they looked more polished. These small additions made an incredible difference with the final appearance in the kitchen. As for his recommended finishing touches, doorway casing, window casing, crown molding, baseboards, door knobs, cabinet hardware, vanity mirror, etc. - these made all the difference. Again, in retrospect, had we chosen any of the other contractors that gave estimates, we would not have the supreme quality of work and appearance as with DECO. In the beginning, we were not looking for the design aspect because we were overwhelmed with repairing the extensive damage. However, now, we see we were so fortunate to have chosen DECO. Fred far, far exceeded our expectations. We simply could not be happier, more satisfied. We highly, highly recommend DECO Construction.
Description of Work: We were absolutely and completely thrilled with the job that DECO performed on this house. Work included repair and replacement of all flooring (new laminate and carpet); remodel of back storage area into beautiful master bath and walk-in closet, repair of roof, eves; repair of extensive water damage in two bathrooms, addition of fire door between kitchen and garage; relocating washer/dryer to garage (from kitchen); install new kitchen sink/appliances, refinish cabinets, installation of kitchen hood where none existed; replacement of all interior and exterior doors, repair of damaged plaster/drywall, replacement of all door casings; installation of all new windows and vertical blinds; painting of all interior and exterior, installation of garage door opener, installation of crown molding. Overall, it was a positive experience. Fred's crew was easy to work with. They were careful not to damage any furniture or fixtures. They did a very good job covering up the floors and isolating the dust to the work area with plastic enclosure. They cleaned up every time before they left for the day. The only setback was the last leg of the job, painting and staining the stairs. The crew did not mix the polyeutherane coating properly, so when it was applied to the stairs, some areas were shinier than other areas, and a few areas were missed. In their attempt to apply the missed areas, it made it worse. Finally, Fred sent his wood specialist who reapplied the entire stairs. He did a nice job and was able to distribute the coating evenly. I wish Fred would have used his wood specialist to stained the stairs in the first place, which may have saved everyone some headache, but we do appreciate his owning up to fixing the problem promptly until it's done right.
Description of Work: Removed wallpaper, replastered, and painted walls in living room, halls, laundry and family room. Plastered over fireplace bricks to smooth finish, then custom built and installed fireplace mantel. Removed capet, prep the wood and painted stairs and railings to two tone.

This particular apartment building had not undergone any remodeling and had lots of deferred maintenance. I began working with Fred and Deco Construction when a tenant left the property in horrible condition. The walls had been vandalized with profanity, the carpets left with the stench and stains of cat urine and when Fred?s workers were done cleaning the unit, there was a total of 20 garbage bags thrown out (all from one unit!) After Fred began working on this unit, other units became vacant and needed work done. Some units needed new cabinets, countertops and bathtub replacements however other units had salvageable items which Fred was able to refurbish, re-glaze or repaint. All the tenants were ecstatic to have properly working windows to enjoy the ocean breeze as well as new garage doors which actually worked throughout the year (the previous wood garage doors would not open when it rained). From the beginning, Fred completed all work obtaining city permits, inspections and finals. Because of Fred?s exceptional work, now this property is much more desirable and due to these refurbished units, I am now earning more rent on this property which makes me one happy landlord. Fred?s work ethic is without a doubt one of the best around town. I would recommend his contracting services to anyone, whether dealing with one room, one house or one apartment building, I know I am getting the most for my money.
Description of Work: For an 18-unit apartment building, the following was completed: interior and exterior paint to building, more than 90 percent of window fixtures replaced and remodeled as units became available. Full kitchen remodeling including sinks, cabinets, stove, fan, disposal, flooring and granite counter tops. Bathroom remodeling including new sinks and cabinets, mirrors, light fixtures, re-glazing/replace bathtub and flooring. Also completed in units: new carpet, other flooring as needed, remove water damage around bathtub, reframe wall, install gas shut-off valve, re-plaster dry walls, garage door replacements, installation of new garage door openers, re-grout where needed, replace sub-floor plywood, install new interior doors and casings, patching cracks over existing concrete around property and trash removal.

Fred remolded our house in 2007 the job was done on time, safe, and satisfactory. During the 4 months that he was remolding our house, we experience honesty, trust and gentle personality not to forget his performance and knowledge. He has become our the guy to go to. Two years ago when we had the swage over flow into our hallway and bathroom he came with his crows late at night to help us. We trust him so much that he is now (in middle of work) replacing our roof. I am sure I am safe. Fred, thank you for being part of our inner-circle.

Our house was built in 1962, it was a 1318 square foot home and lots of outdated features. we had been thinking to remodel the house for several years and talked to several contractors and needless to say we got more disappointed each time and thought we will never be able to remodel our house, until through a friend we met Fred at Deco; After our first meeting; with his positive and easy going attitude both my husband and I knew that we have found our contractor. Soon after we started the construction of a new room, bathroom, extended the kitchen; gutted the the whole kitchen, got new appliances, installed new doors and windows just naming a few. being an old house as the remodeling progressed we found many surprises and just to name one there was no insulation in the walls! with every adventure Fred always said don't worry it is easy! and so it was. He delivered a great job, on the schedule and on the money! since then I have referred Fred to some other people that I know and he came out winner every time! He is not your usual contractor; he has such a terrific talent is interior design also; he made suggestions to our original plan for the better. If I need a contractor again, I won't hesitate to call Fred.
Description of Work: Addition of a bedroom suite, extension of the kitchen and total remodeling of the kitchen, extension of the master bedroom, new closet in MB. new electrical, new heating and A/C, replacement of the doors and windows, not to mention fixing all the surprises we faced along the way.

It was a last minute job (one week notice) and Fred accommodated my request very well. Fred was friendly, gracious, punctual, experienced, and professional through the whole process of estimating, paperwork, actual construction, all the way to completion. The price was reasonable. The estimated 3 day work was pushed out to 4 days due to weather (not their fault). Fred was running multiple teams and projects at the time but managed to be onsite at our small project at all critical phases of the project, and even was here to ensure the completion on the 4th day. Nothing but the best compliments to him. The crew was courteous and all skillful as they rotated the framing guys, dry wall, electrician through. They were considerate in hanging up dust barriers (again, high ceiling!) and moving and covering furniture in the space. There were some unfortunate dings in the hardwood floor. But all in all, I was very please with the work. They cleaned up after themselves very well too. I highly recommend Deco!
Description of Work: I had a small remodeling project of adding a faux wall to house a new electric fireplace. The wall itself is located in a high ceiling living room and runs the entire height. Along with it a soffit and a separate beam were installed to provide for additional lighting via recess and cable lights. They did all the electrical work as well.

I was introduced to Fred through my Realtor. I met with Fred after I had already gotten a couple of estimates and although Fred was not the cheapest he seemed the most knowledgeable. After speaking with him I felt confident that I could trust him to get the work done properly. I decided to have the work started the following week. The work began according to schedule and progressed with no major problems. During the work I decided to add a couple of items to the to do list and Fred quickly provided me with detailed estimates and the change orders. The work went surprisingly smooth, was completely on time, and when the work was complete the house was very clean. The quality of the over all finished job far exceeded my expectations.
Description of Work: Carpet in living room and dining room changed to wood, bathroom and kitchen travertine floor, interior painting, complete bathroom remodel in 2 bathrooms including new jacuzzi tub in master bathroom and new shower enclosure, new kitchen cabinets, opened wall between kitchen and dining area. New carpet in bedrooms, stainless steel kitchen appliances and installation. Closet organizer in master bedroom

Fred's work speaks for itself. From the first time we spoke until the job was completed, I couldn't have asked for anyone more informative and economically efficient as him. He and his workers were always on time with a great attitude. One thing I especially appreciated was his attention to detail. All I can say is if you have a certain vision about the work you want done, Fred will go above and beyond the means to make sure your vision comes to life.

We wanted to remodel our house. I have worked with Fred many times, with our properties and my clients. I trusted that Fred would do the job quickly and most effective manner. He gave us a quote, made suggestions and recommendation. We wanted to change the flooring, he discovered the old hard wood flooring were good, and just needed to be refinished, he saved us money by just re-finishing them. He was great in selection for the kitchen color's for granite, appliances and all of the detail. My husband and I were traveling, therefore we trusted the house with Fred, he did a wonderful job. Fred has totally remodeled a condo, another single family, an apartment building and a commercial properties for our family. We are very pleased with his pricing and services. we would highly recommend his services to anyone who is looking to remodel or upgrade their property.
