Bottom line Showcase Kitchen and Bath produced an awesome, beautiful and efficient kitchen that we love. Charlie Rutledge designed our new kitchen. He listened and gave us many floor plans from which to chose. After he laid out the various designs, he again listened to our inputs and we came up with an award winning design. He was very patient and helpful with the colors, tile and materials. He was very knowledgeable in all the ?GOTCHAS ? areas that a project can create. The project was original estimated at APPROX $86,000. We expected some up charges along the way. We were very firm and very up front that our MAXIMUM BUDGET was $100,000. Not a penny more. This was a deal breaker if it could not happen in that max budget number. We were assured it would not exceed that number but it may be close. Forest Construction was the general contractor for the job. Steve Love was the site foreman. Steve was a dream to work with. He is great guy, very knowledgeable and conscientious foreman. He completed the project exactly on time. Only three months. Truly a significant accomplishment. We ran into some small problems along the way but nothing outrageous. The real problems started when we got into the project. The estimates to remove a load bearing structural wall and replace it with a steel post and laminated wood beam were woefully short. We had to get the city of Camarillo to permit the finished attic space above the kitchen and had to do some significant work to bring the room above into code. Bottom line this fabulous kitchen ended up costing us $126,000 and I did the interior painting myself. We did not have any money left over for a floor at all so we polished the concrete slab and we still have the polished floor to this day five years later. I do not feel we were "GOUGED" at all but I am still very disappointed in the woefully inadequate estimate. Had we known that this project was going to cost $26,000 more that our max budget allowance we would have never have started the project. I will say that we did receive $126,000 worth of value and because the attic space is now permitted we can increase the square footage of or home and increased it's value by that much more. Because the cost estimate was off by over 30% from the original estimate and $26,000 over our MAX budget, we had a hard time coming up with the remaining funds. We were threatened with being taken to collections if we did not pay up in two months. We negotiated a payment schedule with the Showcase Kitchen and Bath and they gave us an additional three months to pay the balance. So if you want a truly beautiful kitchen and don?t care what it costs I would recommend these guys. This was our first major renovation to any home we have owned and learned a ton. We will consult a attorney before spending money like this in the future. Would I use these guys again, YES, the designs are that good but I will be much more aggressive in making sure the estimates are better.
Description of Work: We went to several kitchen remodel companies to get estimates. Everything from Home Depot to Showcase Kitchen and Bath on Ventura Blvd. in Camarillo. We chose Showcase and specifically Charlie Rutledge because he gave us the impression that he really knew what he was talking about. We started the design phase which was to include removing a load bearing structural wall. We also discussed the need to get the finished attic above the kitchen permitted. Charlie designed a truly magnificent kitchen. He really "gets it" and listens to what his customers want and guides them in the process. He is so detail oriented that he had us sampling different drawer pulls to make sure they feel right as well as look great. We were guided in cabinet styles and colors. Counter top materials pros and cons. Appliances, and tiles. It really helps if you know what you are shooting for before you start. If you are confused, Charlie will help you every step of the way. Design phase was very fun. Charlie laid out many options based on our conversations. We ended up with a composite choosing some unique features from all. Construction was actually fun to watch. We had heard all these horror stories about living in filth and mess for over half a year. Steve Love the project foreman was brilliant and kept the mess to a minimum and completed the job on schedule. We started design in December 2008 before christmas. Construction started in April and was done before my daughter's graduation in June.

Overall we felt disappointed. If you spend that kid of hard earned money , we expect everything to be done first class and upfront. I described the majority of it earlier, but we felt deflated and taken advantage of. I have prevented four or five friends from using Showcase. They all come over and love our house, then i explain what we went through to get here and they understand it's not worth it.
Description of Work: Total home remodel, we moved out for 15 months and rented a house. We signed a very detailed contract, and any changes had to be signed by myself or my wife, we authorized many. Halfway through the project we realized their charges were egregious and started getting multiple bids to compare prices. At the end, after we had made a "final payment", they gave me another bill chocked full of charges for work not included in any change orders totaling approx. $18,000. I confronted them about it, refusing to pay. Showcase called me on Christmas Eve informing me they would be putting a lien on my house if i didn't pay. They had no basis or signed agreement on these charges. After spending $500,000 of my money on this remodel, i couldn't believe they were pulling this over $18,000 . Since then we've had quite a few issues, i've taken care of them with my own money rather than deal with Showcase. Some of the problems were not to code and unsafe wiring, incomplete sealing in 2 of the 4 bathrooms resulting in leaks through the floor and into garage, trash found in enclosed areas and crawl space. Another thing we discovered is they point you towards vendors that credit them a fee, instead of where you would get the best price. After many dollars and more than a handful of problems, we are finally happy with our new house. But after all it's taken to get here i would never recommend them. They start the whole process with smiles and warm handshakes, but make no mistake their goal is to separate you from your money

Response from SHOWCASE KITCHEN AND BATH
We agree that the Contract was very detailed and took a few months to write as is typical with a project this size. There were many questions along the way and all of them were answered to the satisfaction of the Owners, culminating in the thorough reading and then signing of the Contract. Included in the detailed language of the Contract was terminology that addressed the unknown situations that might arise once the mechanics of the house were exposed. This discovery occurs during the demolition phase. As the structural issues anticipated for the remodel where extensive, care was taken to identify and address issues regarding the existing home. It was during this time that unknown conditions were discovered in which we determined the best solutions and, as per the contract, discussed the different options with the Owners. After everyone had agreed on the course of action to be taken and the costs associated with those actions, a Change Order was written and construction continued. As typical with a job of this size the Owner’s made many design decisions along the way that were deviations from the original approved contract. As such Change Orders were written to document those changes and the appropriate costs associated with those changes were applied, before the additional was had commenced. The final payment as stated in the contract included the reconciliation of the allowances that were clearly defined in the approved contract. The Owner was informed repeatedly that there would be cost overages based on their final decisions, made in each of the allowance categories. For most of our jobs we draw the required plans, pull the required permits, and are on site for any city inspections. On this job, as with all of our jobs, we passed every inspection including, Electrical and Plumbing, and if at the time there were inspection corrections cited we took care of them and had them re-inspected. At the completion of our work a final inspection was performed by the city and we received an approval that the work was complete with no corrections. We do understand that the inspectors in all jurisdictions do miss things and problems can arise after final inspection which is why we have in place a program specifically designed to address those situations. In this instance we had no opportunity to deal with the alleged Plumbing or Electrical issues as, [member name removed] claims, as we were not contacted by the Owner informing us of the problems. We have never received a kick back or fee credit policy with any of our vendors or sub contractors. This allegation is simply unfounded and not true! We are glad they are happy with their new home as it has always been important to us to satisfy all of our customers and deliver the high quality product they are expecting. We are sorry that the process did not go as well as [member name removed] would have liked. After remodeling over 8,000 homes over the last 30 years we have less than ten clients that we have been unable to please, including the [member name removed].

Job was estimated to take around 4 months, still waiting for it be finished at 9 months. Poor quality subcontractors... either didn't show or work had to be ripped out and done over. We had to point out to the foreman and owner the poor quality workmanship, and they would make excuses until finally agreeing to look into it. We paid a lot of money for an amateur job and organization. Several of things in the original design didn't fit and had to be redone, reordered.
Description of Work: Remodel master bedroom, bathroom. I'm sorry to see that six years later, they are still offering the same kind of shoddy workmanship and unprofessionalism.
