Their work is gorgeous. Kevin Label and Shane and his crew were great to work with. Very professional during the quoting process and the entire job. Down to earth and straightforward. They walked me through each step...first remove the old stair rail. Then 1-2 days to do install. 1 day to do the custom staining/finish and then the installation of the ballasters. My stairs took 4 days which is what we estimated. The final price was what we negotiated. I did a ton of research before selecting Beach City Stairs - I had several companies come in and bid and give opinions. I checked reviews, I verified their worker's compensation insurance and checked business licenses, etc. I'm really thorough. They planned ahead and the wood installers left an extra piece of maple for the stainers to use as a test piece. We discussed the stain color I wanted and so they custom mixed it and tested it on the scrap piece for my approval before beginning the application. They even gave me a small jar of left over stain just in case I have a scratch in the future. Smart! One word of caution to anyone about to do their stair remodel: the worst day is the staining/finishing day. The team at Beach City Stairs prepped me for it, and they did an awesome job sealing off the area, but it's amazing just how fine that dust is. It gets EVERYWHERE - I found that fine dust inside of closed cabinets in another room! It's pesky. But - again, they told me it was going to be that way so I wasn't surprised. And as they informed me, I will have a little bit of carpet repair work to do because my new staircase railing didn't land exactly where the last one did (the old one was hanging over the side in a weird way and didn't line up with the stairs).
Description of Work: Staircase remodel - including demo, removing the old white metal railings from the 70's and replacing it with a gorgeous maple stained staircase with stainless steel ballisters. They created a custom stain right there on the spot and gave me extra stain to keep around in case we got a scratch in it in the future.

Description of Work: Tom was very good to work with and had some great suggestions with the design. We had some difficult changes to our stairway wall that presented unique challenges but BCS were able to be creative and ultimately create beautiful bannisters and rod iron ballisters. We widened our two bottom stairs, stained them a beautiful maple tone, took out a small pony wall and put in new posts and rod iron. We were very happy with their work and would use them again. I have recommended them to my friends.

I will start with the initial meeting at my house/design idea. The owner Kevin came to my home and I had a floor contractor working on my floors. When giving the quote he started talking to the floor contractor. Well somewhere in the conversation the floor contractor somehow offended Kevin (no idea how, while listening to the conversation I didn't hear anything that someone would be offended from) and the conversation became awkward and I felt uncomfortable in my own home. I still went ahead with Beach City Stairs because the quality looked very nice and I wanted good quality work. I was told Kevin was going to stop by while the work was being completed to make sure everything was going without a hitch. I'm all about quality and time management. I was told I was going to have two workers come in to complete my job and quot;one day installand quot; was the exact phrase given. What I received was one worker who took FOREVER with his work. I have pictures to prove that it took one whole day to do a quarter of the work to be completed. Its was more of a break here and a break there then a smoke break after each brake. I have to say if it were my business I wouldn't have this guy working for me. My thoughts on the worker were nice guy who knows how to do his job but he knows how to swindle his employer for more money by taking his time. Needless to say, my one day install took 3 days and one day of staining. Kevin didn't show up until my significant other corrected the worker on some holes (for the posts) and he called Kevin to come out. Kevin came out and started critiquing the floor guys work and not really focusing on the quality of his work. The final product (after 4 days) came out looking nice but I noticed that we had some rails that were loose and bottom squares. I let Kevin know and I am still waiting (its July right now) for him to come and fix the items.
Description of Work: Replaced railing on my stairs.

Response from Beach City Stairs
Ill start by letting you know that your feedback and opinion are important to our business. I would like to address some of the issues mentioned. In our original meeting I apologize if you ever felt uncomfortable, never is that our intent. I have been building staircases for over 15 years and when someone scheduled to do work on my clients stairs mentions what they plan to do on the stairs and is wrong by industry standards my heart goes into my stomach because they might be in over there head, (I have had to witness too many times where the customer is completely taken advantage of). Again I apologize if you felt awkward in your own home. When we originally scheduled your installation I had another employee scheduled to be on site as well, As I mentioned that this project was going to be a 2 or 3 day install with 1 installer and though I tried to have another installer onsite unfortunately something came up and was not able have 2 people there. (and for that Im sorry the project went 1 additional day). As for my employee, I never want them to be rushed and being that there is a lot of math and thinking that is involved, sometimes we need to take a mental break. When I came back to go over a few details with your husband, my fears were confirmed. The work that was done by a flooring contractor was extremely sub-par. I feel that By giving the pointers that I gave to your husband your project in the end was expectable. You mentioned that the "rails" were loose. I need it to be made public that what you are referring to are not the rail but are the Iron balusters and base shoes. The base shoes are not structural and all of the balusters have been adhered with an epoxy that is very strong. I am happy that I was able to come by this week to correct the balusters by tightening the set screws and was able to not take more than 5-10 minutes of your time. As for my responsiveness and punctuality I thought I was very accommodating to your schedule. I recall meeting you at my office after my sons baseball game in the late hours. I think after all is said, you have a really beautiful staircase and railing. Thank you for your business. Kevin Label - Owner Beach City Stairs
