I live in a 2 bedroom condo (approx 825 sq ft). The condensor part of the heat/ac unit is located on the roof of the 3 story complex and our unit is on the first floor. I bought the condo about 2 years ago "as-is" and the heat/ac unit did not work at that time. I finally saved up enough $$ to get it repaired. I called 2 companies from Angie's List to give me estimates and then also called Ron because a neighbor recommended him. I was interested in getting an energy efficient unit. The first guy I called gave me a very reasonable estimate to replace my unit with an energy efficient condensor. I was off to a good start. The second guy was Ron. I showed him the first estimate, and he basically said that it was a very good price, and he wondered how the first guy was going to be able to make it happen given the structural limitations. He told me what he could do to replace my system and also said that while it was possible to replace my unit with an energy efficient unit, it would cost significantly more than if I just replaced it with a new condensor that, while not fitting into the scope of energy efficient in order to get a tax credit, it would be more energy efficient than the existing one. The last guy who came out to give me an estimate didn't even bother to go on the roof and look at the old unit. Apparently, he had seen them all. I showed him my other quotes, and he nit picked them apart. He said he would give me a call in the next few days and let me know their quote. Well, the next day he called and told me that they wouldn't be able to do anything for me because they couldn't find any units that would work in my space. I thought this was a little surprising because when he first showed up, he gave me a song and dance about how his company was the #1 rated company on Angie's List and has the best customer satisfaction, etc. It seems odd that this company didn't have an air conditioner for a cookie cutter condo such as mine that is dotted all over the valley, but I am no a/c expert, so he could have been completely in the right. He just rubbed me the wrong way. Well, anyway, I decided to go with the too good to be true price for the energy efficient unit from the first estimate. Lo and behold, once I called them, it turns out that an energy efficient unit wasn't going to fit into the same space that my current unit took in my hallway. So, he gave me another quote to repair my old unit, and that quote was $500 more than the quote from Ron to do the same work. I called Ron and let him know that I accepted his bid. He told me it would take 2 days to complete the job and we scheduled a date. the first day he cut the condensor unit on the roof and disconnected it. He then welded shut all of the pipes from the roof unit that came down into my unit so that he could make sure there were no leaks. The next day, he and his helper removed the old unit, installed the new unit on the roof, removed and replaced the old electrical box, and connected the unit to the system inside. He checked everything to make sure it was all working properly and even gave me some air filters. He installed a new thermostat and showed me how to use it. He showed up on time and was extremely friendly and also informative. He did everything he said he would do. He didn't try to sneak in any additional charges for anything. When he initially came out to give me the estimate, I let him know about other bids that I had gotten. He was willing to work with me and my budgetary concerns. I liked his honesty and personality from the start. The only reason that I wasn't going to use him was because the price for the first bid was so good, but in the end, it was Ron's price and end result that was the best.
