The job went very well. My wife and I had joined the Direct Buy Club of San Fernando Valley in April of 2010, and Old Master Flooring, located in Van Nuys, was one of their approved vendors. We went to their showroom, looked at samples and selected flooring product appropriate to our needs (engineered wood flooring, since area to be covered is part on concrete slab, and part on plywood subfloor). Jos? Lop?z Wood Flooring was recommended to us by the agent at Old Master Flooring who handled all the orders originating with Direct Buy. I called Jos?, and he came to my home, measured the space where the flooring was to go, and gave me an estimate of $4650 to remove the old carpeting, prep the floors and install the product. He estimated the time required would be about a week. I thought the estimate was reasonable, so gave him the go ahead. I ordered the amount of flooring and supplies he said he would need, and they were delivered from Old Master Flooring about 2 weeks before the work was to start. I paid Old Master separately for the flooring, nosing mouldings, basboard mouldings and glue (approximately $7800.00). The flooring cartons were stacked inside the house, about half upstairs and half downstairs, to allow it to acclimate to the indoor humidity levels. Meanwhile, I had painting going on inside the house, which was to be completed before the flooring installation. When the painting was completed, Jos? and his crew started on the floors. Jos? came with them the first day to see things got started off correctly, and since apparently, he had other crews working in different locations, would leave to check on their progress. He would often drop by my project at odd times or at the end of the day to check in with the crew and with me, about the progress of the job. There were three young men who performed the work; they were very conscientious and (in my opinion) professional in their attention to the required details of the job. The finish quality of their work was really nice. True to his estimate, the whole project took about a week (about seven or eight work days) covering parts of two weeks. The crew was constantly at work except for minimal break time and lunch breaks. They usually were on the job no later than 9 am (coming from Inglewood to Sunland), and usually didn't leave until around 6 pm. They cleaned up after themselves, and carried off most of the trash created by their work. Some of their work tools (power saws, etc.) I kept secure for them, locked in my garage overnight, during the overall project. I advanced $1000 of the total estimate to Jos? so he could pay his crew at the end of the first partial week, and they actually finished the job by Tuesday of the following week, when I paid him the remainder of his estimated price; there were no "hidden" or "extra" charges of any kind. I also paid his three-man crew an extra $50 each as a bonus to recognize their professionalism and work quality. The quality of installation was excellent; all joints tight and well-cut, even though, as I mentioned, the contruction of the home itself was occasionally slipshod, with not all corners being assembled true square. Other custom things done included installation of baseboard moldings, after the flooring was installed, and in the "den" area, which includes a wet bar, there was a section of floor tile in front of the bar which projected into the room, which at Jos?'s suggestion, I opted to remove and include that area in the portion covered by the flooring. So in addition to removing the carpeting, he cut and removed, about 16 to 18 square feet of 12" ceramic tiles and incorporated that space with the wood flooring already in the room. It gave a much cleaner line to the front of the bar, and the line of the flooring on that side of the room. Overall, I was quite pleased with the job, and wouldn't hesitate to hire him again for a similar project. Vastly improved the appearance of the home's interior.
Description of Work: Removed & disposed of old carpeting from upper and lower floors of 2-level house. Furniture had to be moved from room to room also to allow for this process. Prepped floors, and installed new engineered wood flooring (hardwood wear surface laminated to plywood core; required because first floor on concrete slab. Flooring went down in place of all previously carpeted areas; just under 1800 square feet. Ordered that much flooring to allow for waste. Estimate was pretty close; there was one carton of flooring strips left over which was not opened, and one cardboard box full of "trimmings" left when the installed strips had been cut to fit. First floor, on slab, was installed with glue; second floor, on plywood subfloor, was nailed. Centrally located, two flight stairway with landing, was surfaced with flooring strips instead of one-piece stair tread lumber, primarily as a cost-saving option. Nosing moldings added to leading edge of each tread and edges of landing (landing floor surface is exposed and open to first floor). Mediochre house construction in the stairwell meant that each stair tread had to be custom-cut and custom-proportioned, because not all were cut true square. Jose's installer on the stairs and landing did a masterful job of fitting the pieces together and making it look good.

Everything is being installed nice and straight. There are no gaps where they had to do special cuts. I also ordered new baseboard molding and they are installing that also.
Description of Work: They installed the engineered flooring I purchased from Old Master. I have a 2 level home and they were able to install the flooring with nails on the top floor and with glue on the lower level due to the concrete slab.
