I have since learned that other companies would have charged me 40% less than Alpha, but at the time of my emergency, I didn't have the luxury of shopping around for a better price. Alpha took advantage of me and price gouged me during my time of need.

+ 1 moreBeyond Great!!! These guys saved my house!! And they did it in the middle of one of the wettest months on record in Southern California. If you have hillside foundation issues and you want a highly professional contractor who does cost-efficient work, trust me, you simply cannot go wrong with Alpha.
Description of Work: I have owned a three-story home in Glendale, CA (built in 1926) for the last 23 years and bought it for a reduced price at that time because it obviously had significant foundation problems. As the years have gone by they had gotten worse. My top floor is even with street and sits on a badly cracked foundation retaining wall holding back the hill. The bottom two floors sit underneath and the back foundation was at the bottom of the hill. The back foundation was badly cracked and was rotating backward causing the back wall of the house to buckle outward. My garage in unattached and similarly the front and north side sat of retaining walls. The south wall of garage was badly buckled and was listing toward my neighbor's property/house. The front foundation of the house was actually buckling in the opposite direction from the way the back of the house was buckled and was badly cracked allowing rain to pour unimpeded into the large crawl-space under the house. In short, the house was a complete mess and I was rather certain there was little I could do to salvage it. I had several foundation contractors out who refused to get involved but consistently recommended Alpha as the only firm they knew of who had the expertise to handle the job. Alpha specializes in hillside property foundation problems. Boy!! Are these guys great!!! I simply cannot say enough good things about them. From the moment they became involved, I knew I was in good hands. Completely professional. They made great, cost-efficient recommendations that not only saved my house but also saved me an enormous amount of money. They jacked up both the front and the back of the house using enormous four by twelves would supports and removed the old foundations in front and back entirely. It turned out that these foundations were only about 6 inches thick and went down only about 1 1/2 ft. They replaced these foundations with much deeper and much, much wider concrete. They also completely replaced the foundation on the south side of my garage. This structure what must have been a ten-foot basement which had extremely inadequate footings which they took out and replaced with 9-10 foot foundation walls that were doweled into concrete stairs that abutted the outside wall. They thereby righted the garage, leveled the front of the house and righted the back of the house. They also installed shear wall plywood supports along the back and side walls of the house and bolted the house to the foundation in those areas where the foundation was replaced. This all sounds very complex and it is but these guys carried it out all the while both me and my tenant continued to live in the house. I took photos as they were doing all this and I hope to able to eventually load them up here so you all can get a grasp of just how monumental the work that they did really is. They made my home sound. and I will be forever greatful. I can't even begin to tell you how relieved I am to have this behind me. These guys are miracle workers!!!

+ 0 moreThis project fell 100% into the hands of my husband so I can't speak to whether I think we got a fair price or not. What I will say is that Alpha was highly recommended to us by a trusted colleague who had vetted many companies for similar work on his home and ended up hiring (and loving) Alpha. The work Alpha performed on our home was permitted (reassuring!) and approved by an inspector at the end. The workers spent 2-3 days during work hours in the crawl space and I never saw them. Dave walked my husband through the space after the work was done to explain everything they did. We requested before/after pictures and received them. Whenever my husband had a question, Dave was very responsive. I wish my husband and I knew more about this type of work so we could be more articulate about the quality of the work. However, we don't, and sometimes we just have to trust professionals and their knowledge and judgment, in their integrity and responsiveness. Our experience with Alpha has been more than pleasant and no red flags thus far (bonus!). I feel like if we ever have questions/concerns in the future, Alpha will be there to get us through.

+ 1 moreAlpha was very quick to respond to a request for a bid. Mark showed up on time, did a thorough inspection, provided a detailed estimate, and a fair estimate faster than the other contractors evaluated. Stucco repair was an item that Alpha did not usually do, but Mark assured me that he had a crew that was good at it. Mark explained that proper repair of the stucco would require breaking it out up to the point where the foundation met the house and require a special underlayment, which was confirmed by another contractor. His bid seemed low for this aspect of the job, and indeed the crew did the type of repair (breaking out the cracked stucco and patching) that a painter would do. This is the reason why I gave them a "B" for quality, otherwise the experience would be all aces. All other aspects of the job were superbly done. Alpha is great. They responded quickly to any questions, and their office manager, Camelia, was worth her weight in gold. If I had a service business, I'd steal her.
Description of Work: Seismic retrofit on a 1929 stucco house, plus pier reset/replacement and stucco repair along the base of the foundation.

I asked for an estimate/evaluation of my foundation due to upcoming upgrades required on my carriage house second unit in West Hollywood. The office very efficiently set up an appointment then called back to confirm the time and give me the owners cell phone number. Dave showed up on time, evaluated my 1916 unit, told me all was in fine condition and gave me a worst case senario (only if the city went over the top ) of an earthquake retrofit. This is a family company and the owner and his family members were a delight and genuine. Mr. Dave did not charge me for the estimate. Because I researched the company's background prior to contacting them, and not because anything was said, I found out the association to the art side of a structural engineer (the Choinard Foundation which benefits arts for children in the Pasadena area). A good businessman and responsible civic person.

Then the work continued on to the front yard walkway/steps, sidewalk, and driveway apron. I was kept informed of each step, provided with contact phone numbers, and the workers were careful to secure the areas for safety. I am satisfied that I selected Alpha Structural, Inc. to complete the concrete repair areas needed around our home.

+ -1 moreI e-mailed the company to find out about them coming to do an inspection on the structural integrity of our home. The office manager replied promptly and gave me the phone number of one of their engineers, Mark. I called him and described our concerns with some noises our house makes. He explained that the sounds were actually normal due to thermal expansion and that he didn't believe an on-site evaluation was necessary. He spent a long time on the phone with me, asked a lot of questions, and then gave me a lot of good information. He said that they normally charge $250 to come do an inspection, but that he didn't think it was necessary. I was impressed with how much time he spent on the phone with me.

+ 2 moreThe engineer, Mark, called us before arriving to say he would be a bit late, and then showed up exactly at the new time. He took his time and crawled with me under the house and examined the outside, and then provided his opinion of our situation. It turned out that the seepage would not develop into an issue, and he provided useful information on how to properly excavate around the foundation for a basement. He indicated that while they could do the work, his firm would be more expensive for a small job like this than just hiring a regular contractor. I appreciated his honesty across the board. In the end, he made a referral suggestion and left without obtaining any work. He was very nice and knowledgeable, and I would definitely use the firm if the need arose. It was wonderful to find someone who was honest and didn't pressure us for the job.
Description of Work: I wanted a qaulified person to check some water seepage along our home's foundation, and to advise me on the structural aspects of excavating under part of our house in order to create a partial basement. I expected to have to pay for this service, but was told that there would be no charge assuming I was willing to receive an estimate for any recommended work.

+ 0 moreHighly professional, came within days of calling, arrived on time and the gentleman was highly knowledgeable. After surveying my foundation and examining the spots I was concerned about he basically told me I didn't need to spend a penny, the house was strong and that I just needed to repair the drywall. He even told me the best way to do that. Years ago another very successful foundation company tried to sell me $5000 worth of work and when I balked the price kept dropping as if I was on The Price is Right or something. Alpha told me that work would have been completely unnecessary. THIS IS AN INCREDIBLE COMPANY. They could have easily taken advantage of my anxiety but he absolutely assured me the house was strong and that old houses have cracks. No money necessary. A company with this much professionalism and integrity deserves to be awarded as much business as possible. I strongly recommend them and if your experience is at all like mine and so many others on here you can rest assured that you will not be taken advantage of by them. Great company. Hire with no worries.

+ 2 moreThis is a great company. Even their competitors, when they saw my project, said, "Call Alpha". I live in a small hillside home with a heavy chimney (that I wanted to keep), but both house and chimney were sliding down the side of the canyon. These guys fixed it, and were prompt, professional, friendly, fixed the inevitable minor damages, cleaned up after themselves beautifully, and didn't complain when my dog stole their lunches out of their truck one day. Because of rain, the project took longer than expected, and I did get a lower bid from a different company, but I was willing to pay for the best, and I think I got it. Highly recommended.

+ 3 moreThey were on time and thorough. It was a complicated project that was worth $25,000. I live on a hillside. They built a drainage trench around my house and ran pipes underground. There were a lot of people here to do the work. They had to pour concrete and do a lot of digging. They dug up a lot of dirt that came when it rained. They later put it all back, and I was satisfied with the work. I used them based on a recommendation by a friend who does soil testing and so forth. The work took four days to finish. My experience with them was excellent.

+ 0 moreThey have worked with plenty of homes on hills, like ours. He worked with us to decide what was appropriate to do and when. Our house is mixed as far as the foundation goes, some of it is not so good and some of it is fine. We had them do a retro fit for earth quakes and now that is finished. It worked out fine, they were quick and it all looks good to me. They will also do all the plans and permits for some more structural work including installing reinforcing posts below the house. This will all be done when we can afford to do it. It took them about a week to complete the first phase. The price also included a full drainage evaluation plus some cement work to add some drains, pipes, etc. They were a small company and willing to work with us to figure out the best thing for our complicated, old house. I would use them again and recommend them, too.

+ 2 moreThe Owner came to my house and did a thorough check all around the foundation of the house. It was a great experience - he subdued all of my worries about the foundation of my 80 year old house, was very clear about what type of work I would get the most value for, and didn't make any effort to scare me or push me into anything. I really appreciated his honesty and sincerity. He was really good at seeing details in the concrete and stucco and framing that I never noticed (Foundation Forensics) and then explaining them clearly.

+ -1 moreFrom day one I knew these guys were the right ones. The general contractor and the sales person were brothers and worked well together. In addition to the stuff they were supposed to do, they lowered an interiod support wall so my floor is closer to being level (it's a 100 year old house so nothing's really level). They worked around my kids, kept things clean in the back yard and were really polite. I'd recommend them to anyone who needs a new foundation. I really feel that they did nothing more than what I needed. In other words, although I spent a lot of money, I don't feel like any of it was wasted on stuff that I didn't need. The workers who were here were really nice guys too. They were polite and friendly and worked around my plumbers (who were part of the project). Everyone from the company seemed happy and worked hard. I never once came home to find people sitting around waiting to be told what to do. They even worked six days a week to get the job done faster.
Description of Work: My foundation was a double layer of brick, but the outside of the house is asbestos so traditional foundation replacement would have been even more expensive (as it would have required HazMat to remove the asbestos siding). Alpha Structural came in on time, on budget and kept things cleans. They poured a sister foundation.

They arrived on time and after spending a lot of time looking at the cracks in the ceiling, underneath the house, the surrounding area and outside walls, etc. They said that there appeared to be a shift in the ground due to the fact that our house is in a hilly area. He said we could do one of two things - spend $100,000+ digging up the entire foundation and lot, pouring a sister foundation, retrofitting the entire house, etc. Or we could spend a few hundred dollars and just have someone patch the cracks in the ceiling. We went with option #2. Once again a very honest company that had the opportunity to take us for thousands but did not. I was braced for very bad news but the fact is old houses frequently shift, especially here. He saw no reason to take drastic measures at this time and that gave us tremendous peace of mind. If we ever do decide that we need structural work or if I know anyone who might I will not hesitate to recommend this company. They are smart, honest and highly rated for a reason. Another Angieslist winner!
