Our experience with Pacific Pavingstone (and Pacific Outdoor Living in general) was very positive. This company is professional in every way, from the initial quoting process, to the demolition, to the masonry work itself. They have their own crews which means they are able to maintain a high level of quality, something that was very important to us. At the end, we were extremely happy to have chosen Pacific for our project, who took care of us along the way and actually made it fun to experience our front yard literally transformed. The project started with an assessment of our property by one of their Project Consultants, Mike Saavedra. By the time we met with Mike we had already met with several contractors regarding the replacement of our existing driveway and retaining wall. Mike did an excellent job providing us with options and bringing up points other contractors had failed to mention. He went out of his way to answer all our questions and ensure we understood the overall process. Mike gave us confidence that we were choosing the right company for our work. This was the first home project of this magnitude for my wife and I and we were concerned about how things would turn out. The quote from Pacific was definitely not the lowest, but in retrospect the cost was well worth it. In the middle of the assessment process, we decided to also install a new staircase and walkway, giving us a formal entrance to our home. Once the work started, it all went like clockwork. We first had an onsite job walkthrough to go over all details. During this walkthrough, we met the Field Supervisor for our project, Carlos Rodriguez. Mike was also there to go over the details. A few days after the walkthrough the demolition crew came to remove the existing driveway and retaining wall, as well as prepare the site for the walkways and staircase. The demo crew was very professional and took extra care to ensure nothing was damaged. Our neighbor even commented on how skilled and careful the foreman was with the Bobcat as he avoided making any contact with the grass on his property. What a great way to start the project. The following day the masonry crew showed up. They were on time every day and extremely courteous. Their skill was phenomenal and we are extremely happy with their work. The foreman Pedro worked on our staircase himself and went out of his way to make it perfect. Carlos did an excellent job coordinating the entire process and was very responsive to all our questions. To summarize, we are extremely pleased to have gone with Pacific Pavingstone for this job. Although not the cheapest, the professionalism, quality of work, and lifetime warranty this company offers makes it well worth the price. We highly recommend Pacific Pavingstone!
Description of Work: We had the concrete driveway in the front yard of our home replaced with paving stones, a small retaining wall installed parallel to the driveway, a staircase installed with paving stone materials, and two paving stone walkways built from the driveway to the house entrance and from the staircase to house entrance.

I did not think they were knowledgeable as it got into more complicated project. It was just over their head.
Description of Work: They did plans and estimate for more work.
Our neighbors also used this company for their pavers and after more than ten years their pavers still look great and no weeds have come through, which is why we got a quote with Pacific Pavingstone. We worked with Verva who was enthusiastic and thoughtful. Nothing was impossible for her to work through. She had very good sense of colors/design and had no problem at all getting a basketball key design installed in our driveway using pavers. They even installed an in-ground basketball hoop for us! The approach of the company was no pressure, very customer-centered. Work was high quality and we were more than pleased with how everything turned out in the end. The only hiccup was that the city came by and required a permit which was unexpected for everyone- so we had to come up with another $3000 to get the curb and driveway approach redone to city code. This has not been a problem for anyone else we've talked to, so I guess it was bad luck for us that the city inspector happened to be in the neighborhood. We did get a quote with Go Pavers, but did not like their attitude or approach plus they were going to charge us extra for the basketball court design.
Description of Work: Demo'd driveway and backyard concrete, installed interlocking pavers including basketball court design, installed small fence, and installed basketball hoop for us.The main part of the project took 3 weeks to complete.
Super and fast. These people knew what they were doing. If I have any complaint, it would be the very low slope given to the drain from driveway to street. The outlet to the street is only slightly lower than the inlet from the driveway, so that when there is a very very heavy rain, water accumulates on the driveway, because there is literally nowhere for it to go. Not sure how this could have been mitigated. NOTE: This is the same company that goes by another name: Pacific Outdoor Living.
Description of Work: Installed paving stones on driveway and path in backyard. Re-did concrete driveway ramp & curb to street, including handling of city inspections.

That was good. They had a lot of pamphlets. It was very easy to visualize the design that they were proposing. They had pamphlets of all types of different pavers and paver paths. They sketched out the design. They had good visual presentation. The quality was very good. I felt like I got my money's worth. They responded to phone calls very quickly. They never let much time go by without communication. They were actually early.
Description of Work: I got a "Big Deal" for a consultation. It was a design for a paver walkway.
About as perfect as you can get. The job has lifted the home 200% The crews were very professional, listened to my concerns and fixed things as we went along. Highly recommended. We used their financing that they had available which was the clincher. AAA+++ for a perfect job.
Description of Work: Removed concrete driveway, graded and laid paving stones.

I especially knew what I wanted re a waterfall and pond and when I met with the designer, Jake Patton, we had a long conversation about how I wanted that to look. Jake created the perfect waterfall and pond for me. I am thrilled with how my backyard looks. We made some adjustments along the way and Jake was always responsive to the changes I wanted to make. The job went pretty smoothly and I am very happy about the outcome. I graded responsiveness a "B" but this is not due to Jake's responsiveness but to another individual. If I was just grading Jake, I would have given him an "A" for responsiveness.

We had recently knocked down and rebuilt our garage. Now we needed to landscape the remainder of the backyard. Our objectives were to have low maintenance, reduce water usage due to the drought, and expand our living area into the backyard. We drove out to the La Crescenta location for POL. We liked what we saw and made arrangements for a designer to come to our home and meet with us. At this point we had a basic outline of what we wanted but needed help in deciding about pavers, plants, a drip water system and possibly the building of a pergola. Craig Kelsey was our sales representative who helped us all along the project. He gave us some local addresses to look at for paving work and colors of pavers. We took the time to drive to several locations and check out their work. We ended up back at the La Crescenta location to choose pavers as a starting point. Our basic plan which we started with was expanded and detailed with plants, a drip water system, lighting and a birdbath. Craig took as much time as needed to help us find the type of plants we wanted, and it was his initial idea to add some lighting to the pergola which we had never considered. Once we had the final plans and the estimate, we decided to sign the contract and set up a work schedule. We needed to choose wood and stain for the pergola, lights and pots for 3 dwarf myer lemon trees. We did all of this at the La Crescenta location. We purchased all of the glazed pots which were ultimately used in the landscape. They offer a lifetime warranty on the workmanship and material; and a one year warranty on all plants. This was good as a few of the plants died within a short period of time and POL came out and replaced them. We have had some problems with the birdbath which would quit pumping the water, but they sent an electrician who took care of the problem. Major electrical work was completed for all of the lighting and to provide power to the birdbath. The first crew who arrived cleaned out the entire yard and took out a couple of trees. Then a crew took over to build the pergola. Electricians arrived to add the lights. Then the paving crew; and lastly the landscapers. Craig Kelsey, Trent (the project manager), Jesus and many other workers were always on time, professional and courteous. Everyday that ended, the workers cleaned up before they left the property. Our objectives were met. We have extremely low maintenance, limited water usage, and our living space has been extended into a very lovely and pleasing environment.
Description of Work: Removed existing lawn, landscape and several trees. Built a pergola, installed paving stones, landscape and hardscape, electrical, and drip irrigation. Obtained all local city permits.

They did a good job. They did promise a little bit more than what they actually did. They explained how to water and recommended fertilizer. They never did give me the fertilizer. I did have to replace a few plants that died at my expense. The woman that came out the first time did a good job explaining what was going to be done.

Per the 'special deal' on Angie's list, we were told a rep would come out, provide some ideas, designs and provide us a drawing and/or blueprint of aforementioned ideas and projects. When speaking with Ken, it was like pulling teeth to get him to give us any ideas. I repeatedly told him I wanted to get rid of an in ground spa that had been non-functional for some time and that I wanted to replace it with a water feature and he advised two or three times that it would not look good and that we should put a planter box there. I advised that we did not want a planter box in the middle of the patio, that we wanted a water feature. He was clearly opposed to what we desired. Additionally, he advised I would receive an email from him in two days on Thursday with estimates and bids on the pergola and small pond we discussed. Here it is Saturday and I've received no email (yes, I checked my spam folder, nothing there). So, I basically paid $49.00 for nothing. We'll never use him or his company and if I don't get a $49.00 refund from Angie's List, you can say adios to this customer. Respectfully, D.A. McCallum
Description of Work: He provided us vague ideas as far as what our options were for water features and to build a pergola.

They did a fantastic job. It looks gorgeous. They were on time and prompt (for the most part, there was a small delay the first day due to their truck having broken down. An hour late that day, prompt arrival every other day). Professional and courteous. There was a small miscommunication regarding the moving of our sprinklers (each team thought the other was going to do it), but the problem was resolved promptly, and the guys returned the next day to move the sprinklers as requested. They also did a phenomenal job cleaning up after themselves. Great experience. I would absolutely use them again.
Description of Work: Demolition of old concrete patio slab in backyard and installed pavers for patio instead. Also, installed pavers in walkway up to house.
It went well, there were a couple small glitches but they were responsive as far as taking care of them. You have a salesman and a project manager. The project manager Carlos was on the job about 95% of the time, it seemed we never had to look for him if we had a comment, question, or worry. They were always here on time.
Description of Work: They did a whole lot of demolition of concrete patio, aluminum patio cover, spa pads and hauled it away. They re-graded patio and driveway surface because the drainage was towards the house. They built planters, widened walkways and put in wider landing steps. They also put two doors in for the driveway and also for the patio.

I had originally intended to replace my brick patio with a low wooden deck that would provide more growing space for a beautiful large tree that had been planted in the middle of the patio by the previous owners. I had several deck companies come out and give me bids, but the third deck company told me that a wooden deck would be too close to the ground for proper drainage and that they would recommend pavers instead. After doing some research, I agreed with their premise and they gave me a bid for doing the job with pavers. I then asked two more strictly paver companies to bid on the project, and I went with Pacific Pavingstone. One of the main reasons I did was because Ken, the estimator for Pacific Pavingstone, suggested that the area around the tree where I had been considering putting a deck could be done with pavers, in essence creating a raised paver "deck." This would give the tree roots the room to expand that I had been concerned about. Also, in doing research for the project, I had read that when the ground under a paver installation is hard clay, it is best to put a special "Geo Textile" fabric underlay before the sand is put in as a base for the pavers. Ken agreed, and put this in the contract as a separate cost item. At this point, I was introduced to Oscar, who was going to represent Pacific Pavingstone as the General Manager of the project. Oscar, in turn, introduced me to Pablo, who was the actual on-the-job Foreman. Pablo and his crew were a total pleasure to work with. They were professional, had a great eye for the details of the project, made suggestions and improvements that I truly appreciated. Everything that I had asked for, plus a number of extras, was executed by this talented and very easy-to-get-along-with crew. Now comes the sole "hiccup" of the project. After the crew had spent a couple of days grading, laying and compacting the foundation for the pavers, I asked when they were going to install the "Geo Textile" fabric underlay. Pablo and his crew looked at me blankly and admitted they had not been informed about that part of the project. They also looked understandably upset, because to correct the problem would have meant demoing and then re-doing two days of work, which represented a lot of man hours for their crew. Pablo then called Oscar, who had been stopping by once a day to give a quick look to see how things were going. When I showed Oscar the carefully itemized proposal I had signed, he seemed as surprised to learn about the fabric underlay as the crew did. Oscar began suggesting that the fabric was not really needed. When I asked why they had charged me for this if it wasn't necessary, he began to hem and haw. He said the company would refund the money for that, which was relatively minimal. I said that I felt that after doing my homework on this that the small amount of money wouldn't make up for a job not quite perfectly done. We eventually agreed that Oscar could give me a free "sealer coat" on the finished pavers, which he performed himself after the pavers were installed, telling me that he was doing it on his own time. Now the good news: The finished job looks great and feels super solid. Six months have passed, and everything is holding up beautifully. I have received many compliments from friends and neighbors who have seen the finished patio and pathway, and I personally like it more and more as I've lived with it. I would use Pacific Pavingstone again and would definitely recommend them to others, with the caveat that the client go over the itemized proposal with the on-the-job Foreman so that nothing is misunderstood or overlooked during the job.

I engaged Merrrill from Pacific Outdoor Living (POL) to do a new landscape design with more appropriate plantings - ones that were native and drought tolerant (another designer hadn't done an appropriate planting design) - and try to incorporate the features of the first design. By the time the new design was completed the price was far above my budget. But I felt I had hired a good designer and a highly rated contractor, so I moved forward with a lesser, initial installation plan with hopes of installing the complete design in another phase. The installation took 4-1/2 days. Only two small problems initially popped up - the porch had to be narrowed due to a crawl space vent and the concrete the pavers sat on flowed into each other, so the ground cover that was supposed to be between the pavers was almost non-existent. But, as time moved on several other problems arose. First the drip irrigation overflow always had water flowing out. I called the Project Manager, Brian, and he said he would stop and take a look. I assume he came out to fix it, because it seemed to not be flowing any more, although I never heard anything from him. But within a week it was flowing almost constantly. I again called Brian and he said he would be out the next day. Again, I don't know if he actually did come out, but the water was still flowing the next day. I called one more time and never heard anything ever again from Brian or POL. I later learned that because my lot slopes down from the street to where the sprinkler valves are located that even after the sprinklers are off the water in the system would flow to the overflow because of the elevation difference. Not a peep from Brian or POL about that or if it could be fixed. But it gets worse! A couple of weeks later I get a notice from my water company that they believe I have a water leak and I should get someone out to look at it. So, on a hunch, I turned off my automatic sprinkler system and sure enough, that is where all the water was going. Oh, by the way, my water bill that month was 6 times the usual amount (before and ever since) - that was a large chunk of change. Needless to say, I wasn't going to have POL fix it, even though it might be under some kind of warranty, because they had a chance to fix it three times and couldn't bother or couldn't figure it out. Either way they weren't trustworthy in my eyes. The final insult came in the spring when, after the winter rains (not much, but enough), the weeds popped up like ants at a BBQ. And they not only grew where the mulch was, but also, literally, in the middle of some of the plants. I had to pull several plants out because the weeds were so entwined in the plant roots. That just seems absurd - something had to be wrong with the way they were planted. Also, my designer said the added cost of some kind of weed barrier would not be worthwhile since mulch is a weed suppressor . What a mistake that was. I didn't even ask what it would cost for the weed barrier, but I should have. Needless to say, I could never recommend POL.

I have used "Pacific Pavingstones" twice before becoming an Angie's List member. They are expensive but well worth it. The workers always respected my property. Cleaning up at the end of each day and beginning each morning promptly.. I continue to get compliments on their craftsmanship. I had the following work done: paver stone patios, walkways ,driveway, planters and seating walls. The drainage system that was part of the patio plan works FANTASTIC. All water is diverted away from my house. Once again, they are expensive. We are very happy with all their work and would not hesitate to recommend them to others. Not only were the field workers professional, but also the office staff. They provided continuious information that made the job run smoothly .
They seemed to be very reliable and the person who came out was pleasant. However, we found a better price with someone else.

I had a problem with Pacific Pavingstone not putting anything in writing so I didn't use their service but they went from giving me a price, telling me that it was pretty expensive and I should talk to their Manager and they haven't even come out to do the final measurement. I was waiting for them to come out and when they came out they said they needed to charge me more. Then they wouldn't put any of it in writing or give me a formal contract. The estimate varied; I think it went from $1500 to $2000. I wouldn't rate them very high. I don't recall their punctuality, I guess they were okay.
Description of Work: They gave me a verbal estimate. I wanted a 10x10 paving stone area.
