After we agreed on the estimate and the plan they quickly contacted me with dates, and were able, in the end, to start a few days earlier than planned. The work was done by two teams, one for demolition and the second for laying gravel, then sand, then the pavers. Each team was professional and efficient; clearly, they are used to doing exactly these sorts of jobs, and everyone knew how to work independently and together. I was impressed with their focus and skill, and their attention to detail. They kept cleaning up as they worked, so there was no mess to deal with during or after the job [although, of course, breaking and removing concrete is noisy and leaves dust]. They were able to move my many potted plants and furniture to the side and back of the house, without damage, and then to return things to their place at the end. When the concrete demo damaged some tiles on the steps, they were able to replace them without trouble [fortunately, I had extra tiles that matched the ones damaged]. The job was done efficiently and faster than I imagined -- demo was one day, and the installation -- including a day at the end to let the sealer dry -- took about a week. The final result was exactly what I hoped, and I am enjoying it immensely every day.
Description of Work: I wanted to have my driveway and the concrete covered portion of my backyard paved. I knew Pacific Outdoor Living because they built a pond for me ten years ago and I have been delighted with the pond [and with their service help to clean the pond yearly] ever since. So I asked them for a plan and estimate for paving. They sent someone knowledgeable and helpful and we quickly agreed on the plan: the pavers, the scope and details, and he gave us an estimate, which was in the range I expected. I asked them to proceed.
We have a fairly large home (about 5,500 sq ft) and a sizable yard (over 1000 square feet) in a gated community. We wanted to replace our water-guzzling lawn with paving stones. The HOA is really particular about vendors but Pacific Outdoor Living surely lived up to the standards of the HOA. I can't even begin to describe how wonderful the experience was with Pacific Outdoor Living. We received a bid from another Angie's List vendor which was twice as high as Pacific Outdoor Living. John Durso from the company came to our home, estimated the job and began the work right away. They have over 100 people working for this company and they are ALL professional. I would say that on any given day, we had a crew of about 5-10 guys. Start to finish, the job was done in about two-and-a-half weeks. They work quickly, effectively and treat each stone as if it was a piece of art. Seriously, I have never seen this much care taken for any landscaping job. There was always a foreman or supervisor on site and when I could not be at the house, the supervisor on site that day would text me photos and if there was any question at all about where to put something, they asked. The communication skills of this company rivals any that I have dealt with anywhere. For all this professionalism, these people were HALF the cost and at least TWICE the speed that the other vendor would have been. And they have incredible teamwork...are super-organized; one shift follows another without skipping a beat. The owner came by the job site a couple of times and he had some suggestions that were really helpful including ideas about cutting out some roots from a neighbor's yard that could, over years, push up the paving stones. Brilliant. They also were very patient and respectful working with our gardener to make sure that he understood the changes that would be happening with our sprinkler system. They made it their business to be there when the gardener had availability to discuss all this, not the other way around. I also had another mason (someone I've used for years) build a new BBQ island and Pacific Outdoor Living made sure that he had gas and electrical lines routed perfectly to make that job (that Pacific Outdoor Living had nothing to do with) go perfectly. Now that the job is completed, I can honestly say that I could not be happier and heartily recommend Pacific Outdoor Living.
Description of Work: Removed backyard lawn, concrete pads and sprinkler system. Replaced with Travertine paving stones, a low wall serving as a planter "box", drains to the hillside below our home and exterior lighting.
From start to finish, the experience with this company was exceptional. From Ken who came to my home several times to show me options and work with me to design the best solution for my pavers to Lance who led my project and the team of workers - they were all top notch professionals. These guys went over and above in dealing with a particularly challenging situation that took diplomacy and patience - and handled it so I didn't have to. Can't say enough positive things about my experience and the final product is beautiful - beyond my original expectations.
Description of Work: Pacific Outdoor Living installed a new driveway, walkway, porch and planters in the front of my home.

Our plans changed suddenly so we were unable to proceed, but once we are positioned to do the job it will be Pacific Pavingstone because they were, by far, the best of the 4 different contractors were got estimates from.
Description of Work: Provided a preliminary estimate and plan to completely redesign our bedraggled back yard, including installation of drought tolerant landscape, pavers, and a covered patio area.
I could not be more happy with how PacificOutdoorliving transformed my backyard from a dull and uninviting space that we rarely used, to a beautifully landscaped area that I can't wait to be in with my morning coffee. My friends can't believe the difference when they come to visit. Whenever I need a little boost in mood, I go outside and admire my garden. The best money I've ever spent. The job proceeded smoothly and efficiently because Pacific has specialized in-house teams for each phase of the project: one team for demo, one for the pavers, one for the irrigation and landscaping and dogrun, one for the ironwork fence, and a team of carpenters for the fence and gates. Crews are prompt, smiling, cheerful, and have worked for Pacific for years. They clean up nicely everyday, and repaired any small damages that occurred in the course of the job without even being asked. I solicited 5 bids for the job, and Pacific was about 10% higher than the other companies, but well worth the peace of mind and quality of the end product. Everyone else who bid used subs, which I didn't want, because of the legal liability. Everyone at PacificLiving is in-house, and covered by workers comp and liability insurance, which was important to me. Randy did a great job coordinating and supervising the various crews, and was pleasant and easy to work with, and responsive to any issues that arose. Glen Hampton was my landscape designer, and he is very experienced, a consummate professional! I enjoyed working with him to develop the palette of colors and look that I wanted in the garden. My favorite part of the project was the two carpenters that built my gorgeous redwood fence and gates - they wore cowboy hats and played country music which was really fun. A few plants died several months after planting, and Pacific promptly replaced them. They have a quality control department which is easy to deal with. I look forward to using them again in the future for Phase II of the project - front yard relandscaping.
Description of Work: Demolished an old concrete front driveway and backyard patio, replacing it with beautiful pavingstone driveway and large backyard patio. Evened out the steep grade of my front driveway, removed old steps to widen the driveway. Replaced old lawn and sprinkler system with drip irrigation, drought tolerant garden, and a DG path. Built a dog run with pea gravel and drainage behind my garage. Replaced an ivy covered chain link fence with new redwood fence and two wood gates. Replaced old iron gate to backyard with new one.

I could not recommend these guys enough with their amazing work and professionalism. I think that is what seperates them from other contractors.
They were extremely efficient and professional. Always on time and in constant contact on what they were doing and what they were going to do. Very helpful in recommendations on what directions to take when plans. Had a very difficult drainage issue, and it turned out beautiful. Every neighbor on the street had stopped by to take down the number and has commented how beautiful it looks.
Description of Work: Large wrap around driveway with pavers, drainage, sprinklers, curbs, walkways.
Fast and competent. I was quite impressed. The only issue is that when rain is especially hard, water level at street rises above level of the drain outlet, so water backs up at drain site in front of garage and some water can get into the garage. Drought means this hasn't been much of a problem. If I knew what I know now, I might have discussed this with them to see if there was anything to be done (such as, perhaps laying drain pipe less deep at inlet side, so that slope to street was greater).
Description of Work: Paving stones for driveway and backyard path. Drain from driveway to street. New concrete apron to street, new concrete section in sidewalk. Obtained all permits. They did the job in a day or two (don't remember exactly - it was six years ago).

Excellent, from Al salesperson, to project manager, very professional, work was timely and done in a quality fashion.
I have never seen a group of more hard-working men. Apparently the fire pit was much deeper and stronger than they thought and it took great pains to remove. They never charged me extra. They worked very hard and were really good people.I wanted them to remove the stone from the front brick facade that had been cemented on 16 years ago and initially they agreed but once their specialist arrived he told me they didn't want to take any chances in removing the stone in case the brick was damaged - that was very disappointing but they suggested I patch the grout and reseal - it looks better but I still really want to have the original facade back......but not their fault....
Description of Work: Sorry I don't remember the cost - but have owed them a good review for a few years - sorry - hard to find time. They removed a stucco fire pit with footing from back yard and replaced all the turf. Also resealed some stones that had been placed on a brick facade in the front of the home and were in need or repair.

I am absolutely thrilled with every part of the process and the final product! I used Pacific Pavingstone about 10 years ago on another home, and found that their pricing was about in the middle of the pack, their professionalism and quality was excellent, and for only slightly more than concrete we ended up with a much better product. Although we sold that home, it is in Studio City and we have driven by over the years--the driveway appears to be wearing well and still looks great. When it came time to do work on another home, I bid the work out again and used Pacific Pavingstone for all the same reasons I originally selected them. While they may not be the cheapest, I felt that they were by far the best value for the best work. System Pavers quoted me $25,000 for our little job!! And then offered to discount it to $20,000... still a lot of money. They had a beautiful power point presentation showing their work, and spent a lot of time bashing the competition to justify their high price. But beside the fancy presentation, they spent very little time looking at the design and plans for our specific project. When Pacific Pavingstone came out, I felt comfortable with them right away. They were here on time and were very professional. They use their own people to do the work, so you know that your salesperson will also be responsible for managing the project. No "bait and switch" here. And most importantly, they took the time not just to show us a power point and point us to pretty colors and designs, but they spent the time to look at our lot, the type of soil, the drainage, etc. and to make sure the the proposal wouldn't just look great but would be structurally sound. When they identified a potential drainage issue and we balked about the cost of adding a line to the street, they first just cautioned us that we might have standing water... and then without prompting by us just threw in the drainage without adding onto the cost, because they (not us!) couldn't live with the idea that we might have drainage issues. With the pouring rain this week, we are so grateful that they took care of this!!! The total cost was only $11,000... a fraction of the cost System Pavers was trying to justify... and I didn't feel like I was compromising. I fact, I believe I got a better product than I would have with System Pavers, and a far better price! Great people. Great work. A beautiful project. And I am absolutely confident in their professionalism and the pride that they take in the finished work. This is my second time with Pacific Pavingstone, and if I have to do another project, I'm just going to call them out and not bother getting competing bids. A class act. Couldn't be happier!
Description of Work: Pacific Pavingstone removed an old concrete circular driveway and the existing steps and entryway and replaced them with a smaller driveway leading up to the garage, and winding pathway and steps/entryway leading up to the door.

Price was just way to far out of line to be considered. We wanted to consider them based on good reviews, but did not feel too confident based on a huge price difference from most.

We had front lawn removed and replaced with artificial turf. A few days after the job was done we noticed that they had installed 2 different types of turf. We called the sales person who came to inspect the yard within a few days. The turf in the entire front yard was removed and replaced with matching turf at no charge to us. We are very happy with the results. Many people have stopped to inquire where we got such a great lawn.
Description of Work: Replaced grass with artificial turf.
I called Pacific Outdoor Living/Pacific Pavingstones due to their high ratings on Angie's List and the description on their website. The salesman, Mark, came out and gave us a quote on installing pavers and a drainage system, as well as doing grading to lower the dirt against the house. During this meeting, I informed him my concerns were getting the water away from the house and enclosed porch. Mark did not oversell work we did not need and thought our existing rock wall should stay assuring me fixing the stones would be no problem for his crew. He promptly gave me a itemized quote which I liked and said they could start within a couple weeks. What I like about the website for Pacific Outdoor Living/Pacific Pavingstones was that it stated that the workers were all in house employees and there was always a project manager on site for questions. This was not true. The work was sub-contracted and Mark, nor any other representative for POL, was conveniently on hand during the work. I was told by Mark to communicate my concerns with Jose, the foreman, but due to the his heavy accent it was somewhat difficult to communicate. On the positive side, Jose did have a background in civil engineering and came up with a better idea for our drainage issue than planned but this was not conveyed to us until we showed concern that he was not going according to the plan. He ended up not having to do the grading that was listed on the contract because of these changes. In the end the foreman did a good job with the paver cuts, but in many areas concrete was splattered on the pavers when cleaning the equipment. I did not notice the splatter until after Mark sealed them himself. When I called him to ask about it, he said that he had noticed the stains but had hoped sealing them would make them less noticeable. He then said he would call the foreman, Jose, to come and fix the problem. The day I had this conversation was May 18th and I still have not heard back. In addition, the wall that was promised to be fixed by Mark was not done due to the sub-contractor's team "running out of time." Mark also admitted he had his own company called Integrated Paver Systems. I would not recommend them either due to Mark's false promises during the sale process and lack of informing me of the stains when sealing them.

It started with a visit form a designer (also, is a salesperson). They captured what we wanted and put it together into a nice design. Fortunately, we live very close to their design center (separate from their main office), so it was easy to go look at samples of materials to finalize our design. It was a fairly big job, so there was about a week of noise, dust, dirt, etc., but that's unavoidable. The crew worked amazingly hard, long hours, in very hot weather. They always seemed to be in good spirits. The price was higher than what we originally expected, butt their professionalism and quality of work was superb.
Description of Work: We had Pacific Outdoor Living do a $40K hardscape job for us, including pavers, a low border wall, and stone laminate facing on parts of the house and retaining walls. Their workmanship was excellent, efficient, and materials were of top quality. Two of our pre-existing retaining walls had cracks that wept water. I pointed this out, but there was some miscommunication about it, and these places were not sealed. After some months, the leaking water caused efflorescence through the stone laminate. The result was particularly disfiguring because of our choice of stone minerals that were quite colorful. So, although getting work scheduled took a while, the company stood strongly behind their warrantee. They trenched behind the two retaining walls, filled the cracks, and applied a broad area sealer on the back of the wall to stop the leaks. Then, using extra stone laminate we had kept just in case repairs were needed, they expertly removed the discolored pieces and replaced them. All this for no additional charge. It looks terrific. This is a solid company that I would happily do business with again.
This company gave us an estimate that was middle of the road, not too high and not too low. Their project estimator Ken seemed to be the most knowledgable of all the different reps we had provide us with estimates. They were able to start the project almost immediately as we had hoped and it only took 3 days! They removed about 750 sq.ft of cracked concrete in our backyard including two steps which were about 6 inches thick, they dug out huge roots from a neighbors ficus tree which was pushing up our concrete and installed a concrete root barrier along the fence, they moved a water line and created a new spicket in our requested place, they replaced an old sewer cleanout which was a tripping hazard as well as an eye sore, they created two very nice new steps from our 2 sliding glass doors into the backyard, and they installed beautiful pavers. Even their employees seemed very knowledgable about the work they were doing and yes, they are employees, not subcontractors. They were timely, very professional, and did a great job! We love our new pavers in the backyard. We have asked them to come back and place a sealer on them as well, although it wasn't initally recommended by the estimator Ken. One of the workers advised that if we like to bbq, he would get the concrete pavers sealed to avoid any unsightly stains. Ken originally quoted us .75 cents sq/ft to seal the pavers if we wanted, then when I called him back to schedule this job, he said he needed to check the price again. He got back to me quickly and told me that the price was $1.00sq/ft for jobs under 2000 sq. ft but that he would honor his original quoted price. That is one of the landmarks of a good company- they honor their word. Additionally, Trent Morrill, an owner of the company, came by before the project began to see what we wanted to be done, and then he came out on the last day to confirm that they would be done within a matter of hours and ask if we had any questions. All went very smoothly, this company was very professional, efficient, and the pavers look great! The fact that they are a landscaping company vs. just a paving company helps if you have more than just pavers to install. We will definitely recommend them and use them for future projects.
Description of Work: They installed new pavers, removed large roots, installed concrete root barrier, and rebuilt 2 steps.

At the first meeting with the architect, whom we really liked, we explained all the work we wanted done. It was an extensive overhaul of the pool and all new hardscape and landscaping. When asked the approximate price, I was told $75,000 to $80,000. I said if they could keep it aound $75,000 they had the job. Then I was required to pay $1,750.00 (up front) for the plans. Several weeks later the plans were presented, and the cost estimate was over $145,000. We went over the plans, changed numerous details and eliminated half the work. The estimate then came in at around $95,000. We cut out about half the remaining work, and that estimate came in at around $65,000. By this time we were so "put-off" by the prices that we decided that raher than sink all that money into our existing house (other remodelling was also planned), it may be a better idea to sell the house and buy another that already had all the things we wanted in it. So, I took the $65,000 estimate and pulled out just the parts that would be really necessary to improve sales appeal, but not spend more than could be recovered. I used all the costs as detailed in the $65,000 estimate, and the total came to under $25,000. Upon review, Pacific Paving Stone then quoted over $45,000 for the work. That was the last straw, and we cut all ties with Pacific Paving Stone. All we got out of the association was a set of plans for $1,750.00 and a waste of some two and a half months.

This was a long time ago, so I don't remember everything. Had several meetings about the design of my back yard. Paid an extra 100 bucks for a professional measurement of my back yard. Based on that plan, they drew up a design right on top of it. The design drawn of very quickly and did not show much details. a few circles for trees, some colored fields for grass and planters, and so on. I guess I was expecting a little more from the plan, as others drew up similar things for free. Their estimate ended up too high and I went with another company. Depending on what I need done, I may use them again.

They do a great job of hardscaping. No complaints there. I'm writing this review now because I'm so furious with how badly they messed up our pool. It looks horrible. And now is malfunctioning right and left. The lights have white crap all around them and don't work anymore (1 year later) because they leaked. The equipment makes no sense and has to be repaired constantly. Feel free to hire them for hardscaping. But don't let them near your pool.
