Description of Work: My garage door was going up and down and wouldn't stop. I had to turn off the electricity to the house to get it to stop. I called them and they quoted a $45 service fee to come out. They sent someone immediately. Great! The first person said the motor would need to be changed and quoted $700 for the commercial motor and $200 installation. Then he left, but later his supervisor came out. The FIRST thing he asked me was about my remote control. I got the remote control. He checked the motor and did some "adjusting" and then plugged the motor back in and got it working. Then charged me $209 which is a 15% discount if I paid cash which I did. Now, if he had been HONEST, he would have pointed out that the problem was that my remote control became stuck and that's what was causing the door to go up and down. I realized that as soon as he asked for my remote. BEWARE OF THIS COMPANY. In fact, don't use them. DYER GARAGE DOORS has high ratings. Use them. I'm absolutely disgusted that they thought they were "pulling the wool over my eyes" by coming up with all sorts of descriptions about what happened and how he is FIXED the motor when all it was was my remote control.

Description of Work: My driveway gate was supposedly repaired by this company when we had repeatedly had to call them, the first time over 2 years ago. Each time,David, the tech told me the problem was something else. It first had bad fuses. These were replaced 2 times. Then the gate stopped closing again a few months later. This time the solution was a new motherboard, the tech told us. We purchased a new motherboard because we were desperate. The gate again wouldn't close. The new solution was said by the tech to be electrical. He referred his electrician. Another $300. It closed again for awhile (never during the whole time for more than a few months at a time.) When my husband called again this week, the tech said he would not come out without a service charge, and claimed it had been fixed. I feel like an idiot even reading this. I would never call these people and We are pursuing an action in small claims court.

The garage door would go down only as far as the sensors and then go back up. I called Abe's since it was the first big ad in the yellow pages. The technician arrived a little late and proceeded to tell me what a cheap opener unit was installed. He never gave me a quote for the repair, just started taking everything apart and finally decided it needed new sensors. He replaced the 2 sensors and charged me $366.00. The next morning I called another company that quoted me $159 for 2 new Genie sensors which included all labor and service call plus 5-year warranty. Then, that next day the garage door went all the way down, but within a few seconds went back up again. Sometimes it would go down and stay and sometimes it would go down and then back up again after a few seconds. When the technician came out again the following week to see what was happening, he began to take the opener apart again and also mentioned repeatedly that it was hardly worth the $ to repair because it was such a cheap unit. After an hour of trying to get it to work correctly, he said he recommended replacing the unit and he would give me a Lift Master for $795 minus the $366 I had already paid. He called his supervisor to get approval and she said they could do it for no less than $395 plus tax. I told them I would have to think about it and would give them a call. He put everything back together and the door would not go down all the way. It left a 4 inch gap at the bottom....and the technician just left it that way. 10 minutes after he left I tried opening and closing the door again and it would still go down (but this time with a 4 inch gap at the bottom) and sometimes stay, but sometimes go back up - so I called the company again. All she would say is that the technician recommended a new unit and if he came back out she would only install a new unit. So basically they left my garage door opener in worse condition and charged me $366 for the privilege.

My electric gate for the driveway was not working and the company that had serviced the gate in the past was no longer in business. I called Abe's Garage Doors and Gates. The day of service, I opened the gate. A little while later, I received a call from their office that the service man was there but was unable to get in my yard.. When I went out the, re[airman was standing in the middle of my driveway talking on his cell phone. The gate was wide open and all he had to do was walk up to my front door and ring the doorbell. He continued to.talk on his phone the entire time he was at my house and for the most part, it did not appear to be related to my gate; he was even on the phone when I was talking to him. When I tried to explain the problem he was very dismissive and rude.. He did not appear to be knowledgeable about my gate. He first told me my remote opener was the problem even though the gate didn't work with the keypad either.. He seemed to have problems opening the motor. He also ask me where the circuit breaker was and when I showed him where it was, he said "that's not it". At one point was it did appear he getting help from someone on the phone. After he was done, he said he replaced the battery. When he was leaving, he said that "the next time the gate needed repairs I may want to replace the motor because the signal was weak". It made no sense to me and he couldn't explain what he meant by a weak signal . I was not given an estimate before the work was completed and the cost was much more than I expected. The very next day the gate stopped working. I called and spoke to the supervisor, who said he could send someone out the next week. I explained that I was going to be gone the next week. He said they guarantee their work for 30 days and to call when I returned. When I tried to schedule the appointment, I was told I would have to pay for another service call. I tried to explain it was for a problem that was not fixed the first time and was told "if the technician goes out there is a charge". The supervisor basically said the same thing.and also "it would not make any sense to spent the money for a call because the problem was that the motor was bad." He said he could replace the motor for $2400 but they would credit what I had already paid .. After this experience, it would be very hard to trust this company to replace the motor.
Description of Work: the gate wasn't working and he looked at it and changed the battery.

WHEN I CALLED ON THE YELLOW PAGE AD THEY QUOTED ME $69 TO $139 AND $95 FOR LABOR FOR THE SPRINGS AND WHEN THE TECH WAS HERE HE CHARGED ME $205 EACH SPRING FOR A TOTAL OF $490. (THAT IS A CERTIFIED BAIT AND SWITCH) I LATER CALLED THREE OTHER GARAGE DOOR COMPANIES AND ASKED WHAT THEY WOULD CHARGE FOR THE IDENTICAL SERVICE AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY WOULD CHARGE $200 TO $225 FOR THE EXACT SAME SERVICE AND PARTS, INCLUDING TAX AND LABOR. I CALLED AND REQUESTED A PARTIAL REFUND AND I WAS TOLD BY JOHNNY I WOULD GET ONE AND THEN LATER I WAS TOLD BY THE OWNER, URI THAT I WOULD NOT. THEIR YELLOW PAGE AD DOES NOT HAVE ANY COMPANY NAME, ( WHICH IS SUSPICIOUS) ONLY A PHONE NUMBER. IT ALSO STATES SENIOR AND TRIPLE A DISCOUNTS WHICH ARE MEANINGLESS SINCE THEY ARE DOUBLE WHAT ANY OTHER REPUTABLE GARAGE COMPANIES WOULD CHARGE.
Description of Work: THE COMPANY REPLACED TWO SPRINGS ON MY GARAGE DOOR. THE REP WAS HERE ABOUT 1/2 HOUR

The cost ended up to be about twice the normal price and also they put 218 size springs on a door that needs 225 size. The undersized springs apparently caused the drive mechanism on the door opener to fail after less than two years. I called their number and they wanted to charge me $65 to come out and inspect their own work. Do not use this company.

The repair was adequate, the gate works, but I could not tell what sort of adjustment was performed as I opened up the gate mechanism to check and it appeared untouched as it was covered with fine dust and grease. It would be easy to tell if someone had touched it and made any adjustments. I think the guy lied to my father-in-, and inflated the charges. I called Abe's several times and finally got someone to call me back to discuss it. The guy was rude and said, the repair was done, it still works, the bill was paid, so he thought they did a great job. He also felt that the $545 price was fair due to their "expertise". Complete and total rip off. Stay away from these guys.
Description of Work: My elderly in-laws have a motorized security gate and it stopped working. They called Abe' s for a service call. The repairman came out, told my father-in-law that the chain was broken and gave him the $345 estimate. My father-in-law was 87 years old and the time. He told the guy to fix it. The repairman had to leave, and came back about 20 minutes later. He finished the repair in about another 20 minutes, and changed the bill to $545 because he had to make "adjustments" to the gate. There were 3 new links of chain replaced on the gate. I saw the copy of the bill, where the first digit, 3, was changed to a 5. I think the guy just did that to see if my father-in-law would pay it, which he did.

Our chain had broken on our electric gate, so we hired them to replace the chain. They claim they replaced the chain with a new one, but really they replaced it with an old rusty chain and charged us $345 for it!

When they came out for the estimate (for which they charged me even though their website says free estimates) they tried to sell me a whole new frame at $900 for parts alone. I told them I just wanted the door straightened and the edges shaved if necessary. The whole thing took 20 minutes, no parts, and they charged me $345. They have never returned my phone calls or emails regarding this gross overpricing.

Thieves, my 4 year old security gate wasn't working right, The guy tried to sell me 2 batteries that I later saw online would be $25 each for $235 a piece and a transmitter for $300! He tired to convince me my equipment was 10 years old ( a box was but all was replaced less than 4 years ago and have the Quicken records to back me) I asked for the work estimate in writing on the invoice for the service call but he was very reluctant to do so for anyone else to see how outrageous his price was. HAving not made the sale, his boss called and offered to get him to come back and replace the batteries for $360. Next am had all the work done for $275 total by HIMCO ( 2 new batteries, servicing the motor and track). ( my transmitter was fine ) Real rip off artists, avoid!!! Try HIMCO, I should have waited for them in the first place. They have always been experts and reliable.

Abe's gave me estimates for a few types of gates and I chose iron gates to enclose my backyard. I was surprised that the deposit, due upon acceptance of the work order, had to be made by either check or credit card (I can't remember which--just that it was inconvenient), but I hadn't been told in advance. The gates are nice, but the locks were installed upside down, and the installer couldn't key the two locks to the same key. After the gates were up for a few months, one started sticking. I called for repair, and the person who answered the phone told me she would call back to make an appointment. She didn't call, but the next day, the surly guy who seems to be the boss called on my cell phone (I was away from home) to tell me his technician was at my house and the gates were not sticking. I raced home to open the gates and found they weren't sticking. The surly guy asked me to pay $45 for the service call, which I did because I thought I'd called for a problem my husband had fixed without telling me. When the gate was sticking again later that day (the sticking must have something to do with the weather, which I thought didn't happen with iron gates), I called again. The surly guy told me I'd have to pay $45 to have the technician come to repair the problem. After arguing that he was not honoring his warranty, I convinced him to send his technician at no cost to me. I made a few appointments to have the repair done under the warranty, but the technician never showed up.
Description of Work: Installed two six-foot iron gates between stucco house and wooden fence.
