Mike and his team, which included his son Travis, did an excellent job. They were very punctual, polite, knowledgeable & gave me some ideas for another potential project. I was concerned about how the repair work would look on my 20 year old porch but the replaced stones and cement work looked great. Now I wonder why I waited so long. I’d highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Replaced a few stone (veneers) and re-grouted stone walls around porch with cement.

Unlike most contractors, Mike was prompt about responding to my request for a bid and met me at the job site to make sure he understood the scope of work. He needed to carry out a civil engineer's plan to mitigate a flooding problem, and did so without issue. In addition, he suggested some additional steps that could be taken to further reduce the risk of flooding and I hired him to carry that out as well. He did beautiful work and cleaned everything up afterward. This is a family owned business and I would definitely hire them again.

I called Mike of Tru-Bloc Masonry about installing rock veneer to the front of our house. He responded immediately with an estimate, but said he was booked for six weeks. He recommended his son , Travis, of Up Right Masonry. Travis, who was mentored by his father, did an outstanding job. Travis went beyond the work stated in the contract. Once the veneer has installed, he cut the existing flower bed retaining wall blocks to accommodate the veneer. He then hauled away the original bricks. Finally, he left the area in better condition than when he found it. We are extremely pleased with his work and would very much recommend Travis of Up Right Masonry. I could not find a web site for Up Right Masonry. Travis’ phone number is 619-366-6474.
Description of Work: Install rock veneer to front of house
It went perfectly! Exactly like I was told, in exactly the time I was told and it turned out better than I pictured it would be.
Description of Work: Mike, Travis, John and Steven took out my two flights of stairs entry to my front door and replaced the old wood and broken sandstone with a beautiful and safe concrete stairway, walls on each side of the stairway topped with brick and the landing at the front door. They did the work in two different jobs as I didn't have the time on my calendar to give them enough time all at once. I vacation rent out my house. It is beautiful, they are always on time, neat, careful and extremely skilled. Mike's experience is, I assume, the reason he has the knowledge to solve all of my problems. The work by Tru-Block Masonry is perfect every time they have done work for me. I think it has been about 10 years since I called Mike for the first time, he was referred to me by family. I can remember 7 other jobs they have done for me, all of which were perfect. My house is more beautiful and easier to maintain every time they do any work for me. I can't remember ever being able to think of exactly what I wanted though, I needed work done to correct something ugly. I call Mike and ask him what I can do and he knows exactly what I should do and every time he accomplishes the beautification and more simplicity of maintaining it for me!

This did not live up to our expectations. The owner is very undependable.
Description of Work: The owner of this company is a complete flake. He was scheduled to being our patio on Wednesday, and knew we had a deadline with our house inspection and pending appraisal. We cancelled the other masonry we had lined up based on his promise. He then cancelled Wednesday and said he would come out on Friday. He then emailed (not even the courtesy to call) to say he could not "squeeze us in" at all. To me, it does not matter if he does good work if he is completely undependable. I would recommend you find someone else.

Response from Tru-Block Masonry
This couple does not know me, and I have never met her. The only time I met him was when I went out to look at their project. He liked my price, but had deadlines he had to meet, and I told him that I wouldn't be able to make those deadlines with all of my previous commitments. To make a long story short, they got mad and wrote this bogus review on Angie's list. They are obviously use to getting what they want when they want.

I first met Mike Larsen when he came out to give me a free estimate. While he was measuring the project, he identified a unique plumbing issue that would need to be addressed before he could do the work. When I got 2 more quotes, neither contractor noticed the plumbing issue. One quote was outrageous and the other quote description of the project was 1 sentence. Selecting Tru-Block Masonry was an easy choice. Mike and his team arrived and quickly got to work and each day they cleaned the area at the end of the day. Now I have a beautiful, professionally installed stone veneer on the front of my house. His work was so good, I referred him to a friend and I will use him again for another project.

Mike from Tru-Block met with me twice, once to view and quote the job, and a second time to work out the details. We wanted to be sure we had the same vision in mind. Mike was able to listen to my ideas and offer constructive suggestions. Because I tend to speak at the 100 foot level when describing my concepts, I felt comfortable asking Mike his opinions in filling in the details. We came to an agreement and I chose my color from the catalog, and visited RCP to be double sure. The first day Tru-Block was on the job I liked how they prepared the base, but noticed the color of the block was not what I had expected. The catalog and RCP display had some multi-colored stones mixed in with the Brownstone I selected. What I had appeared to be all one shade. I sent Mike an email explaining this. The next morning Mike showed up with an assortment of golden, brick red and charcoal brown to mix in with the brownstone. Perfect. When I thanked Mike for doing this he essentially told me that 'if I am not happy, then he is not happy'. The worker placing the stones on the base said 'we treat this like its our own home'. Mike smiled when I told him I wasn't just happy, I am Very Happy. Moreover, I am very happy to share my experience with you.
Description of Work: Tru-Block installed approximately 90 feet of Keystone Country Manor Landscape Wall Block with columns at the walkway entrance and front porch entrance. I also had them do some stucco and concrete work for me (not reflected in the 4k price) All turned out very well with excellent craftsmanship.

Mike and company arrived on time at 8 a.m. and were completely finished by 4 p.m. the same day. Mike and his crew were courteous and extremely neat and orderly. When they left, it looked like they had never been there except my new wall had been added. I am extremely pleased with their work. Their experience shows. And they matched the color of the existing wall perfectly. Bravo, Mike and crew!

Mike Larsen of Tru-Block Masonry came to my residence and provided an estimate to construct a long retaining wall. I called Tru-Block Masonry because they seemed to have plenty of positive reviews across the various web-sites and he checked out fine with the San Diego BBB and the CSLB. He spent close to an hour with me and explained exactly how the job would be accomplished and made several recommendations. He was very pleasant, knowledgeable, and basically a very professional individual. I believe he would have done a great job constructing the retaining wall had I contracted with him.

Description of Work: Mike build a wall for me. I like his attitude of "this is the way I would do it if it were my property." He was agreeable to my wishes and gave me good advice. He was patient with my need to know "HOW is that done?" The wall showed his expertise as a block worker. It was strong and neat and he cleaned up afterwards.

The job was exceptional. I am very pleased.
Description of Work: I called Mike and got his answering service (Kathy) his wife who was very personable and professional. We set up a time for an estimate. Mike was prompt, experienced and offered several options on completing the project. He called later and gave me an estimate. He arrived promptly, did an exceptional job, and was so pleasant during the entire job. They cleaned everything up and left me with a beautiful front yard. I am so pleased. I would most definitely refer them to others who need masonry work done. Thanks so much!

We were very happy with Tru-Block's enthusiam for getting the job done. Just after dirt excavation we were deluged with rain storm after rain storm (Dec 2012-Jan 2013). Mike, Travis and John covered the work area with plastic to minimize access of the water to the dry dirt. When there was a break in the storms, I was thinking to myself that they could probably get something done now...and there they were on the job. Mike was always open to discussing how he was proceeding, ensuring that this is what we wanted. We and the neighbors are very pleased with the appearance of the pavers. It really looks nice. On the driveway there were existing items and slopes to match up. The sewer clean-out and surface/underground SDGE electrical box for example. The pavers flow and accommodate these items without abrupt changes in level. A noticeable detail that shows their determination to quality workmanship was their cutting of inside curves on individual pavers when needed. Around metal fence posts and the sewer clean-out, for example, they cut smooth curves in the pavers to match, using only a circular saw blade. Tricks (or skills) of the trade! Overall Mike and crew were easy to work with, honest, skilled and determined to complete the tasking.
Description of Work: Demolition of existing concrete walkway & driveway. Excavated and removal of approximately 6 yards of dirt to prepare for paver installation. Installed metal fence posts set in concrete. Installed masonry column to match existing column. Installation and preparation of subbase composed of decomposed granite for pavers. Installed 1500 square foot of interlocking pavers for rear patio and front driveway.
Mike (owner) was very punctual and responsive to our call. He listened to our needs, examined our wall, and provided us with a fair estimate quickly. He started work when he said he would and did not exceed his estimate. He was very personable and really knows his craft. My husband and I are extremely pleased with the results. This is the 3rd time we have had to repair the wall and we believe our last - as it was finally done properly.
Description of Work: Our retaining wall was falling and and Mike tore down our 75' wall and built a new wall for us.

Mike and his assistant were both very friendly. They arranged for the cement truck and the cement pump and also left their cement mixer here over the weekend so that my husband could finish filling the bricks in the wall with cement. We are very happy with the work done.
Description of Work: My husband is quite handy around the home, just didn't have time to do this job himself. He and Mike worked together, and after he had explained to Mike what he wanted to do, Mike gave suggestions on how to cut down the price. We paid Mike for the labor and bought the materials ourselves, using a discounted rate through Mike. We had a few contractors coming out to give us quotes but they were not interested in my husband working with them and their prices were way more expensive (some were double) and they quoted for using cheaper bricks. They built a low retaining wall between us and our neighbors and put in the poles for my husband to put up a fence on top of it.

The experience was really good. A car ran into our house. We had a retaining wall in the front and it got damaged. They came and in one day they excavated behind the wall. They fixed the pipe that was broken. They reinforced the rest of the wall because it had cracks from the impact. They just did a really nice job and they did the whole job in one day. They were very responsive. They came out and gave us an estimate. When we called them to do the work, they scheduled it right away. They did a really nice job. They put three-quarter inch bricks that are not really bricks and then put regular bricks on top of it. It was really nice. If you picture it, it is just a retaining wall and then stucco that has a brick cap. In the corner they cut the brick so that it ran around the corner. It turned out to be decorative detail instead of just going straight with one brick and then starting on the other side and going the other way. That was a pleasant surprise. We worked with the insurance company to get the money. We paid for the service and the insurance reimbursed us. I would use them again in the future.
Description of Work: Tru-Block Masonry came out and built a block wall.
