About us

Floor Pros was established in 1980 as a family owned business to provide the San Francisco Bay Area with quality hardwood flooring installation, sanding, and refinishing services for both commercial and residential homes and businesses. We are committed to providing our customers in San Francisco, San Mateo, Marin, Contra Costa, and Alameda counties with exceptional hardwood flooring services. Our new customers are all wondering the same thing, what makes Floor Pros qualified for quality work? We are members of several institutions that set high standards for the hardwood flooring industry. Trained and certified by the National Wood Flooring Association, who sets the benchmark for professional conduct, we guarantee that our technicians are the best in the industry. Also, we are a proud member of USGBC, who sets the standards for environmentally sustainable construction. Believing that providing quality services is a continuous process, we send our technicians to hardwood flooring workshops in and out of the San Francisco Bay Area a few times each year to ensure that they are current with techniques and technologies. This year we have enrolled our technicians for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification by USGBC. Understanding that sustainable business practices are in the best interest of our customers, suppliers, employees, and environment, we are one of the few hardwood flooring companies in based in the San Francisco Bay Area that are pioneering LEED projects. We also believe in using the best product our suppliers can provide us to ensure that the wood flooring is long lasting and durable. Each year, we make three to four trips to our supplier’s headquarters; whether it’s in Canada, Seattle, or Brazil, we go the distance to find the best brands. Some of the prestigious brands we carry are: Mirage, Lauzon, DuChateau, and Oshkosh Designs. Each brand and product we use and carry is hand picked by our current founder and president,

Description of Work: Floor pros helped us to match existing hardwood flooring in our new house's common areas and install it in two of the bedrooms. They were super responsive and walked us through many different options for what we could do, as well as backup options if the exact match couldn't be found. They were easy to work with and punctual, and I would work with them again.

Description of Work: Floor Pros replaced several boards in my house, 9-10 small boards in the hallway which had been damaged by a pet stain, turning the wood black. 9-10 large boards in the guest room had been damaged by a leaking plant base and so were lifted and warped on one end. I had two different estimates, one from a company who did not do usual sanding and staining, and Floor Pros who use the more traditional approach. I wound up preferring to use the more traditional sand/stain method. | |They arrived on time to do the work, were courteous, and got the work done in half the time quoted. The original estimate was for 2.5 days of work, they completed it in one day. | |The boards in the bedroom look great (one day after install), and match perfectly with the old flooring, the house was built in 1929 and you can't tell the difference between. The boards in the hallway don't quite match. Close, but not totally. I will update my review in a few months after the boards have settled in and the higher traffic will likely have an impact on the final product. If they still don't quite match, I will call to have Floor Pros come back in to fix, hopefully it's not any issue at all. Overall the experience was a very good one.

We did not end up using the service but we did not use any service. If I had my floors redone, I would have used them. They arrived on time and quickly reviewed the floors and went back to work out an estimate. The thing I was impressed with was that we hadn't even given him the work and yet he was very responsive to my ongoing questions. We also had a very short turnaround time and he said he would get it done in whatever time we needed it done.

Excellent in every way.
Description of Work: Jason at Floor Pros helped us get our floor refinished on a very short timeline so we could move into our new home in time. They were very professional, responsive, and did a fantastic job at a price that was much less than other quotes we got. They went out of their way to make the experience great for us (nervous first time home owners). I would definitely use them again for any flooring needs.

Description of Work: In the middle of our DIY bamboo flooring project, we got stuck and decided to hire it out. I called Floor Pros and spoke with a man named Mark. He explained that our job was too small for his company, but talked with me on the phone for about twenty minutes and explained to me exactly what we need to do to finish. He aswered my questions about glue down vs. nail down. He told me what problems to expect and how to over come them. His advice worked; we put in 1000 sq ft of carbonized strand bamboo and the floors turned out beautifully. Thank you to Floor Pros and to Angie's List.

It took us awhile to finally arrange to get the work done. The salesman left the firm and we lost contact. But by gong to their site, one of the firm's owners gave us very close attention - offering availability for consultation at any hour and on weekends. With his help, we finalized the job for the same price several months after the original estimate was given. The final measurer who came out was extremely helpful and courteous. He brought vinyl samples, that he left with us for a few days. The workman was extremely careful and concerned that everything go well. Together we made some changes in the cuts the measurer had recommended and it all went very well. The floor is beautiful and it looks like it will last a good long time - maybe not 50 years, but who knows!
Description of Work: Toward the end of 2011, four different flooring firms estimated a job of replacing the floor cover in our "back porch," which is an enclosed area which serves as the main entry to our house and includes a short staircase, small bathroom and large laundry area, leading into the kitchen and main hallway of the house. The flooring was very old - more than 50 years - and in bad shape. The salesman who came from Floor Pros was not much different than the others, but the price was competitive and the service promised more complete. In other words, unlike other providers, Floor Pros started from the proposition of tearing out and disposing of the old floor, which seemed like a good idea to us. Thus, their price was actually lower than the others.

The job ultimately turned out well, but not without several glitches: Again, we hired Floor Pros because of Darren's professionalism, knowledge and assurance that Floor Pros does great quality work. I remember asking Darren how long he had worked at Floor Pros and he said, "Ten years". I thought, great, he's stable. We scheduled the work. Darren said he would check-in with us again before the date of our work. He also said he would have a "very detailed hand-off meeting" with the Floor Pro refinishing crew before they arrived at our house so he could pass on details about the job that we had discussed with him. You can imagine our surprise when Darren did not check-in with us before our appointed work date and, further, did not come with the crew to our house. Even further, when I asked the crew (of two) if they had met with Darren to discuss our job, they said "No, Darren left work last Friday and never came back. He doesn't work at our company any more." What??????? Many plans had been made for our family to relocate to the beach while this job was being done. We felt stuck. So we reviewed the project again with the lead crew member who assured us that he understood the work and would put a heavier coat of commerical Glitsa on the designated areas of our floor than the contractor used three years before. Although we were irritated that Darren--or someone from Floor Pros-- had not let us know about Darren's leaving the company, we left feeling fairly confident that the contractor understood the job and would do quality work. After several days at the beach we returned home. We could immediately see that the newly applied finish was uneven on the floor. In particular, the areas that had been the worst worn and most sanded by the contractor were also the roughest and had the least amount of Glitsa finish on the surface of the floor, e.g. more finish had obviously soaked in at these places, leaving them dull and rough. At this point, we decided to find Darren--come h*** or high water! And we did. We called him on his cell and Darren confirmed that he no longer worked at the company but said the company would stand behind its work. He said he would talk to Jason, the business owner, and have Jason come look at our floors and decide on next steps. Within 24 hours Jason called and set up a time to look at our floor. Once he arrived he also saw the problems we were concerned about and said the company would re-coat the problem areas at no extra cost to us. Although Jason did not ask us to pay any money for the work that had already been done, we offered to pay half of the amount owed at that time, and would pay the rest when the work was finished. In August (on a date of our choosing) a one man Floor Pro crew came to re-coat our floors again. Our family went back to the beach to stay for a few days and was thrilled when we returned from the beach to see a uniform, shiny floor when we returned. All's well that ends well.
Description of Work: Three years ago we had another floor contractor refinish all the wood floors (4000 sq. ft.) in our house with Glitsa, a very difficult, toxic floor finish that is supposed to be one of the toughest surfaces that can be applied to a wood floor. We did this because we have two large dogs, plus kids, and wanted the the floors to hold up for years. Despite assurances that this would be so, the areas where our family spends the most time and walks the most (kitchen, dining room, walkways to bedrooms) showed terrible wear after only three years. Hoping to avoid refinishing all 4000 sq feet again, we called Floor Pros--after reading about them on Angie's List-- to see what could be done, specifically with the areas that were most worn. Darren from Floor Pros came out to see our floors and we decided to: 1) buff the areas of the floor most used/worn, and 2) put one coat of Glitsa on these areas. We decided to go ahead with Floor Pros because Darren was so professional and knowledgable that it instilled great confidence in us about Floor Pros' abilities. As it turned out, this process was repeated twice, e.g. the floor was buffed and coated in July and again in August.

I was in the process of closing on my first home when I first contacted Floor Pros about fixing up the floor. I didn't know whether I needed refinishing or a buff and coat. From my description of the floor Jason said I might be able to do a buff and coat (estimate $600) but after looking at it he said the deeper scratches would not come out and that I would need to refinish ($1250) to get those out. He didn't pressure me either way. I was trying to get the floors done before I moved in so I wouldn't have to deal with moving furniture out of the way, but my closing was delayed. I ended up having to push my move date back a week, in part so I could have time to get a second estimate. The property manager of the building said she had "a guy," so I got an estimate from him too. He also said $600 for a buff and coat, but he is not a floor specialist; he would just rent a machine to do it, and refinishing would be beyond his ability. Since Floor Pros gave me the same estimate for a buff and coat as the "guy" did, I figured it was probably a good price, and I chose to go with the actual professionals. I also chose to go with refinishing, after waffling a bit, because if I was going to go through the trouble I figured I may as well do it right. (Normally I would do my waffling before even contacting a provider, but I found it impossible to get any kind of ballpark idea of how much it might cost without actually having someone come look at it. I have a feeling I will encounter this a lot as a home owner...) In summary, I was under a lot of stress and time pressure and had a hard time being a "good customer" because of my own circumstances, but although I got a sense that Jason was a bit annoyed with my moving dates around and changing my mind on what I wanted, he remained professional about it anyway. The actual refinishing job was perfect. Absolutely gorgeous. It did change the color a bit, which I was not expecting; it went from that yellowish coloring that is so common to a more natural maple sort of color. I do actually like this color better, but if I didn't, I'd probably be a little upset that I hadn't been warned that could/would happen.

Floor Pros has a great showroom where you can view installed samples of various hardwood looring as well as samples of laminate and other types. Jason was very helpful and patient in helping me choose the type and sizing of the flooring material. During demolition of the old flooring and installation of the new the crew was very punctual and professional and quick. They spent more time on my stairway than they had probably estimated but didn't charge extra and did an excellent job overall. The new floors look gorgeous and have no flaws whatsoever.

My (fired) contractor hired people to install and finish a new maple floor. The installation was okay, but the sanding was terrible. There were swirls and high/low areas throughout. They had applied one coat of finish. As many things were going south in the remodel, I fired the contractor and contacted others to deal with the job. Floor Pros work was detail oriented throughout. I will use them again.
Description of Work: Floor Pros were prompt, efficient, very professional. They did a good job re-sanding and finishing a new maple floor that had been poorly finished by another company hired by the contractor. What a difference.

Floor pros were great. I had some really rough old hardwood in my house that they refinished and brought back to life. They also installed new flooring in one area and made sure the new stuff matched the old. Darren, the guy who runs Floor Pros, is extremely friendly, responsive, and has a good eye for what will look good in your house. After the project was completed he came out right away to fix the couple issues I did have , which were minor. The price was also competitive or below all the other quotes I got. Thanks Darren and Floor Pros - I'd definitely recommend to anyone else.
Description of Work: I had very old hardwood floors in the house I just bought which were previously covered by carpet, and in one room vinyl tiles stuck on with tar paper. I had pulled the vinyl tiles off myself, which left some significant gouges in the floor in that room, and there was still some tar paper stuck to the rest of the floor. Floor Pros refinished these floors bringing out a really nice color, fixed the gouges, including a small trim piece in the living room which stained a different color from the rest. They also installed new flooring in the hallway where I had pulled up some of the old tiles that extended from the kitchen.

We had a our badly marred and scarred hardwood stairs sanded, re-stained and finished. This was a difficult and time-consuming job as there was almost 30 years of accumulated grit, double-sided carpet tape adhesive, nicks and stains on the solid red oak stairs. They came out beautifully, almost like new. Our home has a floating, open staircase design and we were very concerned about wood dust migrating beyond the work area into the living areas of the house. Of course some dust did find its way into other areas of the house, but the problem was minimal and we were able to rid the house of all dust within two days. Kudos to the Floor Pros for listening to our concerns and trying very hard to deal with them. My wife and I were home during the entire process, which made their job even more difficult as we were constantly needing to walk through the work area which would violate the dust-proof plastic shielding. The hardwood installation went without a hitch. The guest bathroom floor was "floated" onto ceramic tile, rather than pulling up the tiles. The floor was laid over the tiles on a thin layer of foam paper. I was concerned about this method of installation as I didn't want the wood planks to pop up or buckle. No worries. This worked out beautifully. As a plus, the floor is warmer now :>). The third-floor hardwood installation was a three-day job with no issues other than nearly running out of material. No problem though, the guys did a brilliant job of cutting and pasting hardwood boards to fit without having to buy additional product. We are thrilled with the results and highly recommend this company for their professionalism, attention to detail and thorough end of job cleanup (a big deal for us). The only issue I had that was less than perfect scores had to do with punctuality. The guys showed up on the late side pretty much every morning. This was in large part due to the fact that they had to commute from SF to Oakland in the morning. So, really, not their fault entirely. But it was difficult to plan our mornings not knowing when they would arrive exactly. In the end, no big deal.
Description of Work: Our job was actually three jobs: Engineered hardwood installation in our downstairs guest bath; Hardwood installation in the common areas of the 3rd floor living area to match the rest of the house; Complete refinishing of our 21-stair, three-level oak staircase. In certain areas, new floor boards and quarter round trim was installed as well. The entire installation and cleanup took 4 full days.

My son went off to college in January. His bedroom looked like a war zone. We decided to turn it into a guest room by refinishing the hardwood floors and painting the walls. We obtained 3 estimates of which Floor Pros was the middle one. I am always suspicious of the lowest bid and the highest bid and often take the middle bid if they are all in the same ballpark. Darren Hue, who gave us the estimate, was punctual and professional. While looking over the room he spotted the poor condition of the floors in the adjacent study and suggested we finish that also. Since the men were already going to be in the house and the bedroom wouldn't take all their time, he threw in the study for only an extra $75. That was too good to turn down. He was also very good about working out the logistics with the painters. On Monday and Tuesday the floor crew sanded and refinished the floors, up to the last coat. On Wednesday and Thursday the painters did their thing. On Friday morning the floor crew came back for the final coat. By Saturday morning floors and walls were dry and ready to move in furniture. Everything went as planned, with no surprises. Even the painter was impressed. I would definitely use Floor Pros again.

They did an outstanding job. There were here when promised and went right to work. I gave them a key so they didn't need me to hand around an empty house all day. You can't tell where the boards have been replaced and smaller dents were patches to that they are hard to spot unless you are looking. I chose the commercial grade finish since I have two large dogs and I haven't seen any scratches or dings since moving back in. If only they could unpack the boxes as well......

I recently took possession of a property that I own in SF. I had a very tight schedule from the tenants moving out and my family moving in. I called Floor Pros on a Friday to get a quote to refinish the hardwood floors in two apartments; Darren came out right away to quote the job. He assured me that he could get the floors refinished in time for the movers to show up and deliver my furniture. Darren's team arrived as promised and started the work on time. The entire team was courteous, professional. Work was completed as promised. When I showed up to see the final result, it looked like they replaced all the hardwood - it looked that good! In the lower apartment, the floors were in horrible condition - the tenants let an aging dog urinate in the living room in a 4' x2' area, plus there were multiple water stains in every room. In one of the bedrooms, there was extensive wear and the wood looked like it was going to have to be completely replaced. Darren's team repaired where necessary, and again the floor looked brand new! I highly recommend Floor Pros - will use them again.

I got an appointment for an estimate within two days of my first call. They came out, measured, and got me a quote the same afternoon. They were able to fit me in within a week which was critical as I was trying to move in to my newly purchased house. The floors look amazing, the price was $1,000 less than another company I looked at, and they cleaned up after themselves quite nicely. They were done with the job sooner than I anticipated which was very nice and they are easy to reach and responsive to questions - and I've had many...never had wood floors before. I will be calling them out to provide an estimate for (and likely do) my kitchen floor which I recently found out is hardwood as well under a layer of plywood and awful linoleum.
Description of Work: They removed the carpet from the living room and hallway, sanded the area and three bedrooms, one of which was badly warped, and finished them. They patched where the floor needed patching and they hauled all the trash/rug/pad away.
