It was an A+ experience. It went perfectly. Nick, the salesman, suggested the best solution for this upgrade of 19 year old vinyl windows that were fogged in from failed seals and leaking from a design flaw. My new Milgard fiberglass windows are magnificent! This was a complicated job, removing and then installing custom huge tinted tempered windows with angles some located on the second story and some on the third story of a single family home. I had used AHR on a smaller job in another home earlier in the year and was going to use a different company not based in the Bay Area for this because I had received a bid that was significantly lower than AHR's. I spoke with AHR's manager explaining my wishes to use them and they came back with a competitive price that was only slightly higher so I went with AHR and am not sorry about spending a little more. Their locally based home office along with their policy of no money up front, lifetime warranty on installation and skilled professionalism inspired my confidence on both occasions when I used their services. They charge extra to pull the permit for you, and you can save and do it yourself, but spending all day downtown trying to do that didn't seem worth it to me, so they also provided that service. I highly recommend them again!

The employees of this company are great guys. A salesman came out on site at first to help decide what to buy. I signed the contract which did not require me to pay anything at all until the job was completed to my satisfaction. They got the permit, sent someone over to measure, then someone to install the windows. It not go perfectly at first because one window had been measured incorrectly so the installer had it reordered as a rush. Also, unknowingly, his suction cup to lift windows was faulty and it broke through the glass on two windows which also had to be replaced. I was impressed with the way the company handled these mishaps. They were calm, serious, apologetic and got right on it. It was fixed asap and easily passed inspection. I bought Milgard windows which come with a lifetime warranty and AHR gives a lifetime warranty on their installation. I was so pleased with the work that I hired them to do a second job custom job for twice the money on another property in San Francisco. I highly recommend American Home Renewal.

They came to make an estimate at different levels of costs. Helped us work through the Home Ownership Association and the City's planning department approval process which took 3 months. They were installed in one week time and cleaned up thoroughly afterwards. Help us find the painting contractor also.

I asked for quotes from 3 different contractors. Two never showed up for the original quote and a third contractor did the measurements and never sent a quote. I finally go on Angie's list and just picked the best rated window installer and called. The reassured me that they are family owned and their installers are their employees and not subcontractors. They showed up on time. They explained the work. They asked and clarified my requirements and they took care to make sure I had all permits. There was a minor mistake on the order but it was too late to change, so they adjusted charges in a very fair manner. I had a couple of issues with opening or locking the windows the first two weeks after installation and they sent the original installer out to review and fix. I have more projects for next year and I will use American Home Renewal if they offer the services I need.

We recently used American Home Renewal for some window replacements at our home. As a veteran of numerous home improvement projects, mostly good but with some not so good, I feel compelled to give a thumbs up to these guys. From the beginning of the project, where we were brainstorming ideas (this project had a few non-standard, old house style considerations) up until they drove away from our home, these guys replied to every request, had very good creative input, and most importantly delivered on their promise of satisfaction and quality. Each and every person we had contact with, from the estimator, to the scheduler, to the installer, was organized, professional, and courteous! Most importantly, in my opinon, was that they all communicated with each other, and that made for a smooth running job. I would strongly recommend American Home Renewal.

This review is way overdue, so I apologize to Marc and Chris of American Home Renewal. Marc Stelzer was referred to me by the general contractor with whom I contracted for a bathroom and kitchen remodel. That was perhaps the best referral I received. Marc's service was very conscientious and above all, patient. He was straight forward about the products he represented and enlightened me about window retrofitting. I was not pressured to consider a specific manufacturer, as had happened with a vendor whose name also starts with American. This company is consumer, not commission, oriented. When I received Marc's estimate I thought it was a value. There may have been less expensive proposals in the market, but Marc's service and attention was the determining factor for my decision. The crew Marc sent to install the windows and doors were likewise very professional and courteous. Emanuel, his brother and father exhibited excellent work ethics and superb efficiency. Each had their specific role and their succession of tasks were executed fluidly. Their commitment to detail and quality was reflective of vintage craftsmanship. This review should have been posted ten months ago, but even though it is way late, it goes to show that American Home Renewal is worth the wait. I will use them again should the need arise.

The entire engagement with AHR was, by and large, fantastic. The sales call was informative and to the point, and not at all pushy. The salesman, Micah, was fantastic in this regard. Nothing puts me off more than a pushy sales person, and Micah struck a perfect balance of giving me the information I needed to make a decision and answering my questions. The quote for the entire job was not cheap, but then I wasn't after cheap, I was after quality. We wanted to have the job done to make the house look less trapped in the 70's, but in such a way that we wouldn't end up re-doing it in 10 years time again, in terms of quality of material and workmanship. The window replacement happened first. Originally scheduled to be a 3 day job, it turned into a 5 day job because once the boarding and sheet rock came off, it was clear that the original structure was not at all up to code, and was actually pretty badly built, sagging in places. The window crew ended up having to rebuild most of the wall before they could fit the windows properly Then, the demolition crew arrived fairly punctually on the scheduled day, and proceeded to rip off the outside of the house, down to the board. They cleaned up after every day's work, and were really thorough. The second crew arrived after they were done, and started replacing the boarding and filling in the missing insulation, and also repairing old termite damage as they went. The boarding was wonderfully done, almost a work of art on its own. The Hardy siding then went on, along with new gutters and downpipes. The quality of the workmanship was exemplary, and now that it is all done, we couldn't be happier. I particularly liked that they'd thought through the small things, such as the nails they used, and how they did the board attachment. Good attention to detail.
Description of Work: Replaced two windows on upper level to get all windows on the street-facing side of the house height-matched. Removed stucco and vinyl cladding, removed boarding, re-board with decent thickness board, fill in gaps in wall insulation, re-clad entire structure with Hardy siding, fit new gutters and downpipes.

The installation phase was the bright spot in my experience with American Home Renewal. The installer did an excellent job with all three windows and the front door. He was very professional and personable, on time, worked very hard, was attentive to every detail, stayed each day until that phase of the project was completed, cleaned up beautifully, and was a real joy to work with. I cannot say the same about the window product selection, ordering, and delivery service. An unfortunate number of errors were made, listed below: Screens were supposed to have been ordered and installed with all three of my windows (they were provided for one). The plan was to replicate the original window shape, basically a rectangular shaped window topped by an arch. During the materials discussion, it was never mentioned that the material used for the arch would not be wood but a rubber-like substance. I selected stain grade wood for the inside window frames in order to have the greatest options for finishing them after installation. The arches were a completely different product and color from the rest of the frame, which rendered the stain grade wood irrelevant; it will all have to be painted; staining is not an option. The two front window frames (intended to match) were different products and finishes: one is pre-primed paint grade wood in white, one is stain grade natural fir - I was billed for two stain grade window frames ($917.00 extra), The hardware on the stain grade wood is white, which doesn't match anything. Both windows open the same direction - an awkward appearance when viewed from outside. The contract was signed August 29, 2013. The projected start date was the first week in November. The windows were ready to be installed the first week of January, 2014. Unexpected need for painting: The two front rooms now needed to be painted, because of the varied window materials used. In addition, I had made arrangements to have the exterior of my house painted after the windows were installed. Since the installation did not occur any where near the projected time, the house was painted first. I will have the added expense of having them come back to touch up the windows and door. Initially AHR agreed to deduct the difference in price between the one window which was to have been natural fir but arrived as pre-primed white pine - a difference of approximately $500.00. Eventually they agreed to deduct the whole $917.00 since both windows would have to be painted given the arch of a different color. I declined the offer of a gift certificate to a restaurant of my choosing. The company refused to compensate for the cost of interior painting engendered by the frame mix-up. As for the other minor problems, their only response was to offer to replace the windows; having waited over 3 months for the replacement to occur, I was unwilling to go through the experience again.

I reimbursed them for the time it took to try & get permit. I THINK what they told me was the truth (but I've only got their word for it). According to them, a big effort was put in trying to get approval. The woman that I dealt with the most, Sima, inthe office, was EXTREMELY helpful, courteous, & understanding.

My initial contact was very knowledgeable and friendly. I was originally concerned about using Fiber Cement, because the Internet contains more horror stories of it being poorly installed than the alternatives. Based on the first meeting, and all the praise I found online for American Home Renewal, I decided to go with the Hardie Board Fiber Cement. Once I signed the contract, and the final measurements were made, I didn't just get estimates on when the work would start. I was under no time constraints, but some idea when the work would take place would have been nice. They emailed me a helpful to do list to prepare for the work, to make sure the work go smoothly. After a few weeks, I got a call from them stating a hole opening up in the schedule, and they could start in 3 days. Not a lot of notice, but I had been preparing all along. Once they got here, they went straight to work. The Hardie Board came wrapped up to protect it from the elements, which I thought was a good touch. Residing a house can be loud, but it never seamed excessive. The work crew only worked during the week, and even on Memorial Day. The office told me they would have the day off, they showed up anyway. The entire two story house took only 5 or so days to complete. The house looks great. My neighbor, and the county inspector, were impressed by their work as well. Afterwards, I noticed the work permit was missing a signature, so I called the county office. They said I needed to schedule a final inspection, so I did so. The next day, the people at American Home Renewal called to let me know about the final inspection they scheduled. Once they found out I had already scheduled one, they canceled the one they set up. Bottom line: Everything worked out well. The only room for improvement is: I would have liked a basic estimate of when the work would start, and if the schedule changes, then just let me know. If you say the work crew is not going to work on a certain day, like a holiday, and that changes, let me know beforehand. If there are final steps, like scheduling a final inspection with the county, let me know before the work is completed.
Description of Work: Placed Hardie Board (Fiber Cement) Siding over existing Redwood, replacing with plywood where necessary. The house was wrapped with HardieWrap weather sealer wrap on top of the old wood, before placing the new Fiber Cement.

These guys were great!! They did and excellent job and completed the project when promised. They were punctual and courteous. They were very neat and cleaned up after themselves daily. When the project was done, as an added bonus, they cleaned and hauled away waste from a previous project. They also fixed the latch on my side gate. They did this at no extra cost. If I had another project of this sort I would definitely use them again.

Awesome. They got the whole job done in two weeks.. Detail work on the windows (caulk) and perfect fitting of the Hardieboard planks around uneven edges with flashing where needed, was excellent. Even details like framing my doggy door were meticulous. The guys were punctual each day and tolerated my many requests for additional work to be done (as I realized all windows should be replaced rather than most) this was a huge project and they were about 30% less which allowed me to get the whole project not just part of it done, and more specifically allowed me to get the colored hardieboard which I will now not have to paint. Yeah! Responsive throughout the project. They worked in coordination with my roofer. Started and finished on time

I had a great experience from start to finish. Coy came out & gave me a estimate, explained the difference options, explained in detail about why Hardi is the company to go with, and the options between the windows. He also gave me various payment options and of course gave me the Angie's List discount (thank you Angie's List). The workmen arrived on time, with plenty of staff to do the job, and the materials sere delivered. The work was done on time, everyone was very pleasant & helpful, and they cleaned up really well - in fact, it was probably cleaner after they left then when they arrived. The siding located on the side of the house did not need replacement, but will in the future and I will be calling on American Home Renewal again.

We had a very unpleasant experience with this company. We needed casement windows in a two unit San Francisco building. When I called the office I asked if they could supply wood casement replacement windows. The office staffer said of course. As a result we scheduled an estimator to come to the building. He informed us they would NOT do wood casement windows, but could bid on the non-wood casement windows in the unit. This, by necessity, would require us dealing with two vendors. American Home Renewal had no recommendation on another contractor for the wood casement windows. However, they would give us an estimate on fiberglass windows for the back of the units and wood "french" casement windows--also for the back of the units. French casements are double windows, not single casements like we needed in the front. The estimator took measurements, but took weeks and weeks to get us a price. He seemed liked a very nice guy but was obviously really, really slow. Multiple phone calls and emails finally resulted in getting a bid and contract for two different brand names of windows. By definition they would NOT look alike. We were then informed the window company fabricating the french casements windows required a third set of measurements and more time. The company was Weather-Shield. I had done some internet research on the company and they had some very poor reviews. I asked the measurement guy (an installer) what he thought of the fabricator and he said the company was OK but it was next to impossible to get replacement parts if anything broke. We started this process in early May of 2012, and had signed a contract in August. The firm had verbally represented it would take between three and four weeks from contract signing until installation. As we had been "burned" by the delays in getting estimates and the visits for home measurements, I put a line in the August contract that the contract would be voided if installation did not start by October 26th. We got a call in early October indicating that the fabricator needed more time and they could not start by the last week in October, so we canceled the contract and did not proceed at all. I can't, for the life of me understand how this company has so many good ratings on Angie's List. We only selected them because of these high ratings. Their staff must be "hit and miss".

Micah came out multiple times and worked with us in tweaking what we wanted to be done. It took multiple revisions to get the contract right. Micah was very good about coming back out to show us the window and siding samples. After we signed the contract it took 6 weeks before the construction started. They sent out 2 teams to work on the house. One crew did the siding and gutter while the other crew did the windows and doors. Overall we're happy with the results. They did a good job. However, we did have a couple of rough patches. Initially, we had problems with the contractors. Contractors initially wanted to rush through the job and failed to address our concerns. When we complained to AHR, they quickly addressed the problem. The contractors started paying more attention especially when we had issues with what was being done. We also had problems with one of the workers on the window crew. He was very rude and refused to do things we asked him of him. We've heard that he is no longer with the company so it may not be a problem anymore. Price wise, we got multiple quotes and AHR was the highest. We went with them because 1. They do not need payment upfront. We felt more comfortable that if something were to go wrong, they would address it quickly given we haven't paid them yet. 2. We needed to have the work done quickly. Other companies wanted to send in a single crew and take more than a month to finish the entire job. AHR was willing to send in multiple crews and parallelize the work. This was important to us because we wanted everything to be done and painted before the rainy season began. 3. Micah did a great job explaining what was going to be done. We felt most comfortable with what AHR was proposing. 4. AHR is one of the two Hardie certified companies in the area. We wanted Hardie siding so this was also important to us. Overall, the quality of the work is good. We're happy with the results and would recommend them.
