I have 18 steel-framed casement and awning windows that had been bolted and painted shut by a previous owner. A few others still operated, but the few screens that I did have were unpainted aluminum and I wanted white frames. First, I tried a local screen shop for 6 screens, but their mitered corners had unacceptable gaps. Thankfully, they took them back and refunded my money. Someone recommended SCREENMOBILE of Santa Barbara, so I called and talked to Dodie Gorman, who owns the business with her husband, Greg. I was able to get an appointment a few days out. Greg showed up with his screen fabrication trailer within their stated arrival window. He went right to work and measured each window.. It took a little while to make up the 18 screens, but as they came off the trailer, I could see that they looked good. Some went up right away on the windows that operated and already had clips installed, and they were infinitely better than the previous aluminum framed screens. While the screens were priced at $35/ea for the smaller ones and $45 for the larger, Greg told me that it would be another $20 per screen for installation where there were no clips. I had already cleaned and tapped all the threaded clip holes that had been painted over, but he was adamant about his price, so I declined and said I would put them up myself. I knew I could get the clips locally for about $0.35 each. Greg finished the job and I paid him, but I did not inspect the entire job. Had I done so, I could have saved Greg an extra trip and me some time. When putting up the screens the next day, I noticed that Greg had numbered many of them on the sides with an indelible black marker. The numbering was visible when the screens were installed because they are placed inside the window. I called right away and Greg said he would come by the following day and fix the problem. This he did, and while I thought he would have to remake the screens, he just used hair spray to remove the black ink! Problem solved. I also asked him to make another screen while he was there. He quickly did so, and when I asked him if I could just pay cash on the spot, he said the screen was gift. Wow! Class act! Greg has been building screens on site for many years, and does a quick and professional job. I think his price is a tad high, as I had more screens done recently in South Pasadena for a lower price, but the difference was not great and prices tend to be higher in the Santa Barbara area. I would highly recommend SCREENMOBILE of Santa Barbara.
