Builder wrote up contract with cost estimates for categories such as windows, decking, flooring, etc. --Then he went out and bought cheap seconds to install. Products such as decking and windows and kitchen cupboards failed within a few years time--windows fogged, cupboards, which were supposed to be top category, warped. The $ 8500 deck, made from Trex, was installed incorrectly with no spacing, voiding the warranty. Deck now looks like a roller coaster. He installed 3 vents under the house(14 were required by code). Morton installed such a cheap small gas heater that the house was freezing in the winter. We later found out that it was totally underrated for the size of the house. He also forgot to hook up the under-the -house heater vents in three rooms! But somehow he said that WE should have noticed this on our walk-thru of the house the day we got the keys. The lap siding is installed in an iffy manner and is easily moved--but he says this is OK. At least until it falls off. Wooden stairs outside house rotted in the first two years as they were built from pine--not doug fir. Electrical recepticals all had to be replaced in the first two years due to cheap parts. Other electrical was put in incorrectly. James Morton steadfastly refused to fix any of these items until we took legal action--which ended up costing more than the items to be repaired--and we still have to replace the deck-as he stalled until the warranty ran out. I might add that the Sonoma County building dept. did not catch any of these defects at the time of building and did not require them to be corrected afterwards. The court system favors the business owner over the consumer in this county also and has to this date not required him to correct anything on the contract. We always made every construction payment on time and in full. We have been through a nightmare with this guy and would hate for others to have to experience this. This man is deceitful and will wring every dime out of you with bait and switch tactics. You will pay $17,000 for windows and get windows that he bought at a store going out of business for 5600, with no warranty. You will get "Walmart quality" cupboards for around $12,000. The real kicker is that by the time we got to court after all the stall tactics, the judge ruled that the time limits had passed. Next stop-- California District Attorney's office.
