+ -1 moreI went through the same thing as the other reviewers with Kevin. My educated guess is he is a heroin addict. Definitely on some kind of downward spiral. He might have split personality too. I dunno, I really think he means well but then can't keep it together. I do know you're asking for a lot more than a shed if you enter his world. My shed shoulda taken 2 days but it took more than a month. A very fraught and difficult month. It got done and is mostly as advertised tho there are some roof leaks and some of the walls aren't level, but overall it's very nice, looks like a lil house. But there are issues and I will never call kevin back in for his 10 year warranty because I don't want that back in my life. I used him last summer 2012. Looks like maybe he has gotten even worse since then from the other reviews ive seen. And hes changed his company name and web presence to hide from reviews. I should have posted something right away to deter people from using him but I didn't see any other bad reviews- i hired him bc of a few of great reviews elsewhere and he had a bangin portfolio and smart web presence. So as mad as I was, I took pity and I didn't want to burn a guy who it seemed was having a bad moment. But he's obviously settled into this way of life and he should be stopped. Run dont walk away from this cat. Use someone else.
Description of Work: Kevin was hired to build a shed in a couple days, just like the other dedicated shed builders around SoCal. I thought I was paying a little more for someone who seemed to have more style and class than the other builders I found online... what I got was a month long nightmare of daily broken promises and a perpetually lying, MIA contractor. It was awful. The shed I got, and rode him hard to finally get, is very nice, but that became so far beside the point...

+ -1 moreHis laborers did a demo to clear the area but he has not built anything, nor has he purchased any materials with our $6500.00 deposit. After giving KEVIN SMITH (Sole owner, operator of LA SHEDS and now just recently changed his name to LA STUDIO SHEDS) he does not return phone calls, texts, or emails. We were DEFINITELY robbed by this individual. He is also NOT LICENSED as he claimed he was. HE SHOULD NOT EVEN BE ON ANGIE'S LIST !!! He admitted after the fact that he uses laborers that stand in front of Home Depot. Something my wife and I were upfront about in our initial consultation with him that we were STRONGLY against. Prior to the $6500.00 deposit for shed material, he volunteered to do a concrete job he noticed that I wanted done. All he did was hire someone from Craig's List and he subbed the job out to them and the job came out very shoddy. This has been a total nightmare. Again, he has not brought over one piece of wood ! What did he do with my $6500.00 material deposit? I now learned that a real licensed contractor would not ask for 5/8 deposit and that was illegal for him to ask for that much. Please help me get my money back Angie!
Description of Work: Consumer BEWARE. Move on - use a licensed contractor. My wife and I received excellent communication from Kevin Smith up until he asked for 5/8 deposit. 5/8 = $6500.00 that was supposed to be for a material deposit for the guesthouse Kevin was to build us on our large property. After giving him the deposit, he does not return phone calls, texts, or emails. We gave him deposit on 12/13/12. He was supposed to build two weeks before Christmas, then it became a week before Christmas. He still has not started nor did any material get purchased. I feel we have been ripped off by Kevin Smith. Beware - Beware - Beware. Also I have confirmed with his former partner that "1507 7th St, Ste 655 Santa Monica, CA 90401 is NOT a real "SUITE" address. It is a P.O. Box and it would appear that he does not live anywhere near Los Angeles. My wife and I feel we have been taken advantage of. Please don't let my nightmare of an experience become yours: He will gain your confidence, and make you feel comfortable, answer or return all your calls and text - until you give him a deposit. Or perhaps he seized the opportunity to take advantage of us because our deposit and our project was a larger one. I have learned that a real licensed contractor will not ask for such a large percentage of a deposit. FACTS: KEVIN SMITH IS NOT LICENSED - he represents himself as a licensed contractor but will ultimately avoid showing you proof. (speaking from what we experienced.) From my experience: He has a very short fuse. I finally heard from him today and he gave his "word" that he would start our project finally. He never showed up. Instead he called me asking me to wire more money to his paypal account. When I told him I was at the gym and could not do it at that moment he became irate. This is not the first time I experienced his temperament issue and foul mouth either.
