It went great. Gary helped us plan things out, guided us all on the work, and performed all of the challenging work while we helped with the easier stuff. Gary was up for everything - helping pick up materials, carpentry, heavy lifting and finer/finishing work, including hardware. Great guy to work with as well!
Description of Work: Gary worked with my family and I to build a fence for our front yard, including a gate

Gary came on time (a little early in fact). We wanted him mainly to cut a small amount off the bottom of a door which no longer fit after we had gotten new carpet. He did a very good job on that. While we had him there, he also fixed a leaking sink (quickly running over to Home Deport to get a part), and replaced some dimmer switches. He worked quickly but carefully and the price was outstanding.
Description of Work: Shortened bedroom door, replaced plumbing fixture, changed some light switches
Gary showed up on time, had a very good attitude, worked tirelessly through the day, paid attention to details, made sure he did things the way I wanted, performed quality work - all at a great value. I will definitely use him again!
Description of Work: Gary started at the top of my list and diligently worked his way through: He Installed multiple light fixtures and a ceiling fan, caulked the tub, adjusted the shower door, attached new closures to closet doors, installed shelves, cut some table legs, mounted curtain rods, etc.

Arrived on time to provide estimate and few days later to do the work. For the curtain rod his work was excellent. The rod was centered exactly and installed level, he painted the walls with extra paint and must have feathered the edges so well I couldn't tell there had been any recent touchup. He did a great job on the rain gutters & corrected one downspout that was leaking, another downspout was rusting and jammed with debris but he couldn't knock out the debris. Instead of removing the rusted downspout (it was lightweight metal but soddered or attached at top) he just told me he was unable to clean it. He also installed an iron/blown glass sconce on a stucco patio wall and did a great job.I would recommend him but originally I had asked him to help me replace some wood trim on window sills that I had to repair from dryrot, as his profile mentioned woodwork or carpentry, but he wasn't willing to help with the single hung wood windows because he was afraid he didn't have enough experience with that type of work. I think he's a perfectionist of sorts but may be reluctant to try projects he can't "master".
Description of Work: Centered & installed a Pottery Barn iron curtain rod 8' high above an 8' glass slider, patched previous holes, sanded and repainted plaster wall, installed a ceiling lighting fixture, cleaned out rain gutters and downspouts, other small odd jobs.

I sought out a handyman to assembly 3 pieces of furniture, 1 from Ikea, 2 from elsewhere. Gary Iselt had good recommendations from Angie's List. After talking on the phone and getting an estimate of his hourly charges and his confidence that he could do the work, I hired him and we made an appointment to do the work. He showed up at the exact time. I hate that this still have to be a criteria, but he was clean and presentable. His work was professional in that he brought his own cloth to spread out by the garage where the furniture was in their cartons so that small pieces wouldn't become bits of trash. When he was finished, he properly disposed of the cartons, i.e., smashed them and put them in the recycling container in the alley. He also brought the pieces inside and helped me exchange out the old pieces they were replacing. I couldn't be happier with his work and will definitely keep his number for future work.

Gary was extremely responsive and professional. His work was excellent and he was not shy about telling us what he could & could not do (honesty - what a treat!). He even went above and beyond when he noticed that our front door did not close tightly unless the dead bolt was engaged; he diagnosed the problem and had it fixed in a trice - something that our 2 previous handymen had ignored. We not look further - Gary will be our handyman from now on.

He is very careful and reads and re-reads the instructions. He double checks everything before he completes it. He is a very good communicator about what he is doing and if he needs anything, he lets me know. He is very neat and tidy. He is a great guy that you very much trust to do the job and do it right. He loves doing woodwork, but hasn't found anybody to help him get more into that side. He is very comfortable to work with and be with. He knows himself and knows that if he makes an error, it can create a big problem, so he is very preparation oriented. He is very punctual and professional. Furniture doesn't include blue print.

Gary came on time and worked the whole time he was at my house. He did all of the work on the lawn, so that the wood particles would not get in the house. Any questions he had, we discussed, which I like better that if he had just guessed at which way I would want something done. I will definitely be using him again.
Description of Work: My front door was sagging so much I could hardly open it. Gary removed the door and removed wood from the bottom of the door so that it would open and close freely. The door was from 1948 and had an interior lip and original interlocking weather stripping which made this job much more difficult than a normal job. He carefully removed the brass weather stripping. He had to do all the planing and filing manually, because the wooden lip would not allow use of normal machinery. He had to hang and rehang the door 4 times until it fit properly with the weather stripping properly interfacing again. since the door was resting on the sill before, the door no longer locked, so he had to file down the lock strike plate. The planing of the bottom of the door also chipped some of the bottom of the door leaving parts with no paint. He used Bondo to fill in those areas and then feathered the paint I gave him so that I could not see the area he had worked on. He charges $100 minimum, but that includes 2 hours, and the door took the 2 hours.

Very good overall experience! I had to take some time off of work & was pleased that Gary had met me right on time at my rental property. He repaired my heater & did some painting in a very timely manner. I was charged exactly what I'd been quoted & was very pleased with the outcome of his hard work.
Description of Work: He did some painting & heater repair work on my rental property.
he just shows up on time, ready to go, so have your list of stuff ready! he brings his truck, tools, hardware, and incredible know how. if he doesn't know how (which is incredibly rare) he figures it out quickly. a pleasure to work with, diligent, polite. can't say enough.
Description of Work: gary iselt is absolutely the best. period. i call him the "can do" man. i can't even remember all the things and fixes he had done for me. fences, latches, doors. door reversals, passage locks, deadbolts, balcony, ledges, artwork, framed art, furniture assembly, furniture repair, vertical blind repair, shelving, air conditioner window placement, flower window boxes, on and on..I WILL NOT USE ANYBODY ELSE! if he's not available, I WAIT until he is! the best. i've used him for single family residences, apartments, and apartment buildings.

Gary repaired a door frame that my large dog sank her large teeth into -- repeatedly, with vigor. Our house is older, so it took some work to match it with the existing woodworking. Gary did a fantastic job. He also took care of two other smaller things that needed repair. He charges by the hour and was able to give me an estimate of how long it would take, which ended up being right on. We will definitely use him again.

Job wnt well. the biggest asset was Gary's honesty. He recommeded not two repair two other screens because of the danger of damaging the screen door.
Description of Work: Replaced a screen to a wooden screen door and repaired and repaired 3 screens to wooden screen door.. Screens replaced and repaired with no damage to wooden frame.
All 3 experiences we have had with Gary of Iselt Handyman Services have been positive and successful. He surpassed our expectations. He gave us an extremely high quality result for a completely fair price. Regretfully today's service people do not shine when it comes to follow through on phone calls, timeliness, cleanliness, and billing. Gary was definitely the exception to this rule: he was fantastic on follow-through in making appointments and keeping his schedule, he was always great with his timeliness on the job and his prep and clean up was immaculate, and the icing on the cake was his fair pricing. We will continue to call him when we need a person who can gaurantee to be trustworthy, responsible, hard working, good natured and reliable.
Description of Work: Today was my husband and my third time working with Gary of Iselt Handyman Services. We would like to go on record to state that Gary is a one-of-a-kind true find. The first time we worked with Gary was in 2009 when he re-finished our double wooden front doors. They went from close to having to be replaced as they had been weather beaten over the years to beautifully restored doors, which many neighbors have stopped to admire. The second time was in 2010 when he repaired my grandmother's antique table. Today he painted our bedside table and 6' bookshelf. We found Gary on Angie's list and have enjoyed working with him each and every time. He is reachable, punctual, professional, skilled, affordable, trustworthy, honest, affable, and has great inegrity. All these assets are incredibly difficult to find when one is looking for one person to fit all the needs one has for home repairs. If you are looking for someone who can help do a myriad of tasks that you can't do, don't wan't to do or don't know how to do, we highly recommend Gary of Iselt Handyman Services to you!

I needed someone to replace four gates because my dog was escaping, so I needed someone in a hurry. I found Gary on Angieslist and he was available in a short time frame so I hired him to do the job. I hate to say this, and he might post a negative comment in response, but I don't feel that he was up to the job. I have put off writing this review because. like I suspect a lot of people feel, its hard to write a negative review unless someone is really terrible, which he wasn't, but I feel like I have an obligation to other angieslist members. So, here goes: His knowledge of carpentry is lacking (for example, he didn't know which way the cross brace on a gate went and did it incorrectly - I had to look it up on the computer to prove to him that he had made a mistake). It took far longer than it should have, and cost far more than it should have (Gary charges by the hour) because he mismeasured the height of the existing fence and had to redo a good part of the work and also because he doesn't plan well so has to make extra trips to the store. It took him almost 3 days to build and attach 4 three foot wide gates - at the very most it should have taken half that. The workmanship was so-so handyman quality. On the postive side he showed up on time each morning and he was pleasant enough (though he got rather defensive when I questioned the time he spent). He didn't charge me for the time when he had to go get more materials because he had made a mistake, and he discounted the bill about $200 when I complained about the cost (the $1200 was the "discounted" price and that is still quite high in my opinion and experience). Also, I realized later that he had charged me for the time and material building the gates he couldn't use because he mis-measured - in fairness I don't think that was calculated, just an example of the overall lack of attention to fairly important details) I know he gets a lot of A ratings, but if you scroll down far enough you will see that there are others who had the same problems that I did, and I suspect alot more who just didn't want to write a bad review for a fairly nice guy who wasn't horrible (especially since our names and addresses are available to the service providers we write reports about - did you know that?). All in all I would say he would be fine for basic handyman stuff (the kind you could do yourself if you had the tools and the time and some basic skills) but not for something requiring knowledge and a bit more advanced skills. (Sorry Gary, but I had to do it - its the only way angieslist works.)

Response from Iselt Handymen Services
In my opinion, the four gates look fantastic. The member was very happy with the gates as well. The gates had to be extremely well made in order to hold back the member's massive dogs. I had to remove the old gates and fill in holes with cement before I started building the new gates. I also covered one set of gates with wire mess so that the dogs wouldn't tear through them. It was not a simple job; it was extremely difficult and time-consuming to fence these dogs in properly. I also caulked a tub and repaired a 5th gate and did a great job on that as well. Although I did make one mistake on a cross brace, I did not charge the member for the time, and the mistake was quickly and easily remedied. I worked very hard on this job for 3 1/2 days, and the member said she was happy with the look of the gates when I was done. Even though she again said she was happy with the gates when she called me, she did complain about the costs, so I gave her almost an $800 discount. If she had paid full price, it would have been more than $2000 because I removed hours from the bill, didn't charge her the $400 in materials, and didn't charge her my time for going to the store. Thus, the member's complaints about overcharging and charging for mistakes are not accurate. I charged far less than was due to me. I worked as hard for this member, and gave her as high quality of service as I give all of my customers. I know that my work is excellent, and I know that I am very efficient, professional, reliable, and highly qualified. I am actually very surprised to see this comment on my work, since I worked very hard, she loved the gates, and she saved about $800 on the job. I completed this job on July 9th, 2010, which is almost 9 months ago. I am surprised that the member took so long to post such a report. She was happy with the gates, and was only unhappy with the price.
