The inspector with Holmes & Watson explained everything very well, including that it's a two-step process: Home inspectors are generalists, like family doctors, who provide a visual inspection of problems but sometimes have to refer to contractors to evaluate some defects further to find the final answer. I liked the photos in the report of each defect. Although there are specialty inspections that home inspectors do not do, he told me what type of specialist I can get because I wanted to identify what things may have asbestos. We already saw some of the problems, but Chris told us more about them and what contractor to get. I learned a lot and will recommend him.

Chris Shupp showed up to inspect the property. We asked if we could walk around with him, but he said he preferred to do his inspection and give us his report afterward. He didn't seem motivated to do more than the basic minimum or give us any opinions/advice beyond standard boilerplate type disclaimers. We didn't learn anything very useful from the inspection - it was mostly stuff you could walk around and see yourself, e.g. cracks in pavement and stucco. Given how old the house was (40 years), I don't feel we got enough information from this inspection to know what major problems were likely to occur down the road. For example, we had a floor shortly after buying due to a plugged sewer line. The plumbers said the inspector should have caught it. Our flooring contractor immediately identified some of the original tiling as asbestos-containing, while the inspector said nothing about it. For $425, we didn't get much for our money.

Chris was prompt and courteous. He performed his job thoroughly and carefully. He took the time to explain all of his findings and the necessary steps to be taken to complete repairs. He reassured me that some things were so minor as to not need attention and took care to explain those that did. I was more than satisfied with the job he performed and would highly recommend him.
