Description of Work: A 50 foot tall live oak tree fell over on my property during the heavy rains of last winter. Fortunately, nothing was damaged except for the buckeye trees that it fell on, and the fallen tree blocked the trail to the valley below. Joe of Quality Tree Care visited, and we talked about what I would like to have done: cut up the tree so that the branches high in the air were all on the ground, cut up the branches into fireplace-sized logs, and get the tree off the trail. Unfortunately, only the first of the three requirements made it into the contract. I naively assumed that "cutting up the tree" would include "into fireplace-sized logs" and "off the trail." As soon as all the wood was on the ground, the job was declared finished. I was left with huge logs on the ground. The trunk still encumbering the trail, and a lesson in contracts: imagine the absolute minimum amount of work required to satisfy the letter of the contract, and don't expect anything more. The way in which the workmen initially approached the task was somewhat disconcerting. They tied one end of what looked like a pretty small rope to the huge tree down the hill (trunk diameter approximately 4 feet), and the other end to the trailer hitch of an old Honda Accord at the top of the hill. I could only imagine that if the tree started to roll down the hill, the car would be pulled down with it. I didn't feel that I was in a position to tell these men how to do their job, but when Joe appeared at the work site, it seemed that he questioned that arrangement as well. Cutting up a massive oak tree lying on the ground, with several load-bearing limbs, is a hazardous task best left to people who know what they are doing. I'm glad that I didn't have to tackle that job myself, but I wish that all of the goals that Joe and I talked about had made it into the contract.
