Very well. The work results were excellent and I am very pleased with the outcome. Family and friends have been commenting on the appearance of the roof and the alignment of the tiles. Cal-Pac was not the lowest bidder but I went with them because of excellent recommendations and the concept of using a single manufacturer for the entire roofing system. I also liked the manufacturers inspection and approval of the final job and additional warrantee.

I highly recommend CalPac Roofing in San Mateo. Tony, right from the beginning, was very thorough and patient in helping me choose the correct roofing material. Once the job started, Earl, the supervisor, kept me completely informed of what was happening each day. The crew was hard working, efficient and cleaned up every day!! They were all professional and a pleasure to deal with, including the owner John.

We have only great things to say about Cal-Pac. The entire process from estimate to job completion was extremely smooth and our roof looks great. In addition to the great work, there were a few things that really stood out about Cal-Pac for us: (1) their timely communication, and (2) they really care about the quality of their work. Throughout the entire process, Tony (our sales person) and Earl (our project manager) kept us informed about what was going on. Anytime we had questions we received answers extremely quickly. Prior to installing the new roof, we also had an area that was leaking during the rainy season. Tony came out and patched the area for us to avoid any damage to our home while we were waiting for the weather to clear and have the roof installed. Earl and team then did our install. They showed up timely every day during the install and made sure the area was clean when they left each evening. We were also planning on replacing pool solar on our roof once the new roof was installed and were extremely concerned about roof penetration from the solar (our prior solar install caused a lot of issues with our roof). To avoid any future issues, Earl coordinated with our solar company to ensure that the solar was put on the roof with no penetrations. He even came out and reinspected the roof after the solar was on to make sure it met his requirements. In short, Tony, Earl and Cal-Pac are A+.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review, even though it was not a positive one. Having followed up on this issue, it seems that voice mails may have been left on your phone, but there is no way to be sure. Sometimes things actually do slip between the cracks, especially when extremely busy. After speaking with you, I was relieved that you understood what may have happened. Our office apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused.

The estimate was quickly scheduled (unlike other companies that made me wait for over a week or two) and Brian was friendly and informative. He went up on the roof to take a look and wrote up a prelim estimate for the job. A lot of other estimators didn't even bother going up on the roof to inspect it. Cal Pac was one of the more competitively priced bids and they were GAF Master certified with the lifetime warranty, so I went with them. The job started ahead of the scheduled time frame they first gave me, so that was a good surprise. The job started on a Tuesday and ended four days later. As far as I could see, the work was done quickly and efficiently using the correct materials. I marked them down on the "Professionalism" grade because the job site wasn't cleaned up as well as I would have liked, especially after the first day of during the roof tear off. I found lots of old shingle pieces and pieces of wood shards around the back and front of the house. I also found quite a few nails as well (three nails on the driveway which would have been bad for my wife's car when she came home). I think they probably just cleaned the house 2-3 feet around the house and didn't really inspect the rest of the lot. I marked them down on the "Responsiveness" grade because after the job was finished on that Friday, I didn't hear from them the entire next week. The final inspection wasn't complete and they still had their sign out front on my yard. After the week of not hearing from them, I called to see what was up and they quickly scheduled the final inspection a few days later. They basically got free advertising from my house and I wonder if that would have been the case indefinitely unless I called them. Despite the down marks, I would still use them for a roofing job as I believe their work was solid and their price was much better than most of the competition.

Cal-Pac Roofing would like to thank you for the review and the constructive comments. It is our goal to have every job go smoothly and cause no inconvenience to the customer. Although it is sometimes difficult to find and remove every scrap of debris following the tear-off of an old roof, more attention to detail could have prevented you from having to check up after the crew. As to the final inspection, San Bruno does require the building inspector to physically verify that your home has carbon monoxide and smoke detectors, per the building code. There was a short delay to coordinate with you to be available for the inspector to have inside access for the verification. These issues have been brought to the attention of the crew leaders and office personnel to help prevent it from happening on future jobs. We are glad to hear that you were satisfied with the installation and that you recommend us and would use us again for your own roofing needs. Thank you for working with Cal-Pac Roofing.

Estimator (Brian) was professional on the phone and in-person. Contacted me within 24 hours of my request for a quote. Made an appointment at my convenience to come out and look at the roof for an estimate. Brian showed up on time, not early or late. We talked for a few minutes and then, without ever looking at my roof except from the ground, told me they'd need to tear off the existing roof and replace it. I pointed out that my roof was 22 years old, had never leaked, and that I knew from my own experience was structurally sound (I'm up on it 2-3 times a year - I've walked ever inch of it and inspect it from the top, as well as from inside the attic, annually). He said he couldn't give me an estimate to do a "lay-over" roof, they only do tear-offs and new roof installs. No exceptions. Not his decision, it's his "boss' policy." Something to do with them being "master elite installers"(?). So, they may or may not be the world's greatest roofing company - I guess I'll never know. I DO know I'm not going to hire someone to provide a more expensive service that I don't think I need, just because "it's their policy." Had he inspected my roof and was able to show me why it needed to be torn off, I would have considered it. But he refused to even bid the job unless they were going to tear off and replace a basically sound roof. I suggest they save themselves and consumers valuable time by posting on their website that they don't do lay-over roofing, only tear-off and replace.

Response from Cal-Pac Roofing of San Mateo
Cal-Pac Roofing would like to thank [Member name removed] for contacting us, and for taking the time to post a review. It is a company policy to only do installations that follow state and local building codes, the manufacturer’s installation specifications, and have a warranty issued to guarantee the project and protect the consumer. To clarify the matter of doing a “lay-over” roof, one of the guidelines to qualify for a GAF factory-backed Warranty on the installation and the shingles is the mandated removal of the existing roofing. In addition, there are several city building departments in San Mateo County that actually prohibit the practice of doing “lay-over” roofs. Removing the existing roofing is the best way to find and expose any hidden conditions, such as dry rot or termite damage. Following the guidelines of county building officials, and of a leading manufacturer, results in the best overall installation practices. For these reasons, Cal-Pac’s policy has always been, and will continue to be, the removal of any existing layers of roofing when installing composition shingles. Being rated as a Master Elite Installer by GAF Corporation allows Cal-Pac Roofing to offer quality roofing products, with the highest standards of workmanship to our customers. The Golden Pledge Extended Warranty is the only warranty in the industry that requires a factory field inspector to perform on-site inspections of the materials and to insure that the quality of the workmanship is performed according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. Although these are our standards, we are sure that [Member name removed] will be able to find a roofer to satisfy his request to install a roof on top of his old roof.

Cal-Pac was luckily the place I went to after a long frustrating search with other roofers who basically only talked about composite roofs. I didn't like the look of the composite and hated to give up the look of shake. Dropping by their office, I met Mr. Rossi who introduced me to Decra Shake (stone-coated steel tiles) and gave me addresses of houses to look at to judge. We went with Decra, even though it costs a bit more. Apparently many roofers don't know how to do this kind of roof, so you have to find one who really knows the business. Laying the roof over our old roof added more insulation to the house, and also a roof with much longer life than composite. The workmen were very hard-working, extremely polite, all spoke English, easy to work with in every way and cleaned up after themselves. I would recommend this company to anyone with no reservations.

We have an Eichler. Our previous home owners had purchased & installed Duro-Last roofing from Cal-Pac about 10 yrs back. When they had some leakage, they didnt get it fixed with Cal-Pac and did not use Duro-Last so we knew that there would be no warranty. Additionally, we don't think the leakage was a fault of Cal-Pac either. After our new purchase, there was leakage these past rains and we still decided to call Cal-Pac to see if we can get an estimate. They said it would cost us $75.00 to come and evaluate and give us an estimate. The two folks who did the inspection were courteous and professional and seemed to understand the issue. It seems like there was a misunderstanding where I thought we were going to get an estimate for the $75 whereas Cal-Pac thought they were charging $75 for a service call. After a few weeks, the owner did call and resolve the complaint/ misunderstanding and returned the $75.

Tony, at CalPac worked with me tirelessly to try and find an approved material that met all my requirements. He even brought in insulation options and roof products that CalPac had not used before. After interviewing 7 roofing companies, I would have gone with CalPac if there was a steel shake that met the above requirements.
Description of Work: Seeking to replace my original shake roof, I looked into all possible roofing materials. End result was picking a standing seam metal roof for its long life, light weight, strength, walkable, clean surface, cool roof and LEEDs rating - and it being made from recycled and recyclable material. Unfortunately, Foster City's planning does not include environmental concerns when approving roofs - approving only faux-shakes in dark colors (even though they meet in City Hall that has a new standing seam metal roof).

My mother's Eichler(flat roof) in Burlingame has been in need of a roof for a couple of years now, but we were not looking forward to the ordeal of stripping off the old roof and dealing with the mess that we had 22 years ago the last time the roof got replaced. Cal-Pac was doing a home similar to ours a few blocks away, so when it was done, we went and talked to the owners about how things went. They were quite pleased and mentioned how it was noticeably cooler in the house during the 3 days of warm weather that we'd just had. They gave me Tony's phone number and said that they'd be happy to refer me to him. So I called Tony and he came out and met with me and my Mom and explained all about the Duro-Last system that they use, and what could be done to mitigate the mess inside during construction. We felt very comfortable with him and after a couple of days of figuring out the finances, called him to get the job scheduled. When it started, they sent out one of the guys, Brian, to help tarp my Mom's furniture! It was still a little messy, but 22 years of dust is hard to control. We were thrilled by the "hand holding" that went on during the job, and literally one day after the roof was finished, we got hit by a huge storm, and NO MORE LEAKS!!! I know it's difficult to get excited about a roof, but this went so well, that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Tony and Cal Pac to anyone that would like a professional job done by a team that obviously knows what they're doing.

The roof was installed in late summer/fall of 2006. At the time of installation, Cal-Pac told me they would specifically look at the area where the leak was occurring ? ?leaking section near chimney? (as stated on contract) ? to ensure that there was no damage incurred by the pre-existing leak. This is noted on the roofing contract; it was clear that the specific leak near the chimney was the issue. My roof still leaks in the same spot, despite many attempts to get Cal-Pac to fix the leak. Cal-Pac now claims the original leak is not related to the roof at all ? blaming it on the chimney mortar ? which leads me to conclude that a new roof was not necessary at all, as Cal-Pac had suggested when they sold me the roof. Rather, if what Cal-Pac now maintains is true ? that the leak is unrelated to the roof ? I should have been advised that the leak was outside the realm of the roofing and not something Cal-Pac could assist me with. Given this, I believe a refund of the nearly $15,000 roofing cost is the appropriate resolution to the matter. (Note that I am compromising by not asking for reimbursement to repair/repaint the damage to my home as a result of the leak, the painting of the flashing as a result of Cal-Pac?s installing the wrong color, or the inconvenience caused by the whole ordeal.) More background: Following roof installation ? in January 2007, January 2008 (multiple times), February 2009 and November 2009 ? leakage occurred in the same spot as the pre-existing leak. At first, Cal-Pac was responsive to my calls and would come to look at the leak. Twice they blamed the leak on debris in the drain; however, clearing the debris did not solve the problem. The roof still leaks, and my living room continues to get further damaged with each heavy rainstorm. (In addition to the continued leakage in the pre-existing spot, the roof pools water in areas.) When Cal-Pac became unresponsive to my further attempts to get them to address the leak ? again, the original leak I had hired them to fix ? I took a stronger approach with them and demanded they fix it without further delay. It was only then that Cal-Pac told me that the leak was beyond the scope of their responsibility. They suggested it was faulty chimney mortar rather than the roof. If Cal-Pac was an experienced and qualified roofing company, why did it take them nearly two years to identify the source of the leak ? especially when they were aware that the leak location was ?near the chimney? from the outset? I wonder, if the leak I was experiencing was not due to a faulty roof ? the very leak I had called Cal-Pac in 2006 to fix, and which is noted on the contract ? why then did Cal-Pac sell me a new roof as the remedy for it? I tried for more than two years to be patient and work with Cal-Pac to get them to fix the leak; the original work was completed in fall 2006 and my last contact with them was in December 2008, via the Better Business Bureau. After attempts to resolve the matter via the Better Business Bureau failed to come to a mutually-agreeable resolution, I have not contacted Cal-Pac and have since been pursuing other means of resolving the matter. Response to Cal-Pac?s comments: Contrary to Cal-Pac?s claim, it simply is not true that I contacted Cal-Pac to install a new roof. They were contacted because of a leak. It is specifically mentioned in the contract. They sold me an entire new roof to resolve the problem. When it did not, they found debris in the drain and blamed it on that. However, once the debris was cleared, it did not solve the problem. The leak has never disappeared during significant rain. Therefore, debris was not the cause of the problem as Cal-Pac has claimed. Now they point to the chimney block as the source of the leak. If this is indeed the problem, then I did not need a new roof that they sold me. Cal-Pac has failed to take full responsibility for the continuing leak and the fact that they sold me a new roof that did not solve the problem. I?m not sure how their records can claim that the January 2008 service resolved the matter, given our continued correspondence throughout 2008 until December 2008. I have never suggested that the issue is resolved; quite the contrary. However, at some point, you need to go on to other means beyond contacting the company that is not resolving the situation. I have had to repaint the living room several times. At some point you say, ?enough.? I just want to be finished with this contractor and want my money back that I paid for the roof. Others should also know that, if there is a problem with the roof after Cal-Pac repairs/replaces it, they should not expect a satisfactory resolution.
Description of Work: I called Cal-Pac to fix a specific leak in my roof. They sold me an entire new roof, rather than suggesting a repair to the specific leak. My roof still leaks in the same spot, despite many attempts to get Cal-Pac to fix the leak.

Response from Cal-Pac Roofing of San Mateo
In 2006 Cal-Pac was contracted to install a new flat roofing system per the member’s request. Cal-Pac only installs new roofing systems and does not do patch work on old roofing systems. The member had the options explained at the time of the estimate, and she made the decision to reroof her house. The special remark referred to on the contract stated “Cal-Pac to tear out leaking section near chimney to inspect for dry rot”, which was exactly the work performed. There were no instructions or any agreement to determine the cause of and/or to repair a leak. (Once that section was torn out it required new roofing to be installed, which was done as part of the roofing system.) In January 2007 a leak was reported and responded to the same day by a service crew that found debris was blocking some of the drains. In January 2008 a leak was reported and responded to the next day by a service crew that found debris blocking a scupper drain. Three weeks later a leak was reported and responded to the next day. The service crew took the roofing system apart above the leaking spot, and followed the water tracks back to the chimney box, which was found to be the cause of the water intrusion because of missing mortar around the bricks. The roofing system was reassembled and the gaps on the chimney were sealed with caulking to temporarily stop the leak at no charge as a courtesy, even though this is not something that Cal-Pac normally does. The homeowner was informed to have a contractor repair the chimney box, and we assumed that she would have the proper repairs mad. This was the last report regarding the leaking problem that is shown in our records, which indicates the service in January 2008 resolved the matter. The only additional call to our office was a demand from the member for us to install additional flashings on the chimney box, at which time she was informed that Cal-Pac could not continue to send crews out until the chimney repairs were completed, and when that work was completed the additional flashings could be installed.. There is no further record of any contact with Cal-Pac regarding leakage or any other concerns until December 2008 when the member filed a complaint with the BBB with various demands of reimbursement for painting trim and ceilings. These complaints were responded to and an offer to work with the member was declined by her. The BBB closed the complaint. Cal-Pac is the first to acknowledge that we are not perfect and have had installations that required follow-up work to insure the integrity of the roofing system. This is why it is our policy to respond promptly when a problem is brought to our attention, and do whatever is needed to resolve any issues. This is why Cal-Pac has such an excellent reputation with it’s thousands of existing customers, and we will continue to treat our future customers in the same manner. Cal-Pac performed according to the terms of the contract and responded to each of the calls in a timely, responsible manner and has honored the original warranty. If a problem continues to exist, our office must be notified so necessary action can be taken to determine if the roofing system or other factors are causing the leak. Cal-Pac continues to stand behind the work performed and to stay involved in finding a solution if the leak is ongoing and found to be because of the roofing system. Cal-Pac Roofing is willing to set a meeting with the member (and will include a representative from the manufacturer to join us, if the member is agreeable) to do a thorough inspection of the entire roofing system, especially the problem area around the chimney, to determine for certain that there is no problem with the roofing system installed. We agree to address and repair any areas that are found to be improperly installed, if any exist. Furthermore, we also agree to replace the section of roofing that was opened to determine the cause of the leak in the area near the chimney during the last service call. Finally as a gesture of goodwill, Cal-Pac Roofing is willing to share the cost of replacing the original metal trim with white metal from the factory, so that both parties can participate in this resolution.

Brian arrived on time and was professional. He recommended a roof replacement. I had asked for both repair estimate and a replacement estimate so we could determine if we could do a few repairs and delay a full replacement for a year or two. He didn't offer any advice for repairs and said we needed a replacement. He gave a verbal estimate based on rough measurements. Since I had already had two other estimates that told me I could do repairs and delay a full replacement for at least two years, I wasn't interested in getting a formal written estimate from him.
Description of Work: Brian Fallon came to my house to give a recommendation and estimate for both roof repairs and a roof replacement on our flat roof. The small sloped sections are covered in metal shingles over a shake roof.

We were referred to them by a co-worker of mine who had them install a composition shingle roof 2 years ago. They took a little longer than they estimated (by 1 day) but the job was difficult due to it being steep and it came out just as we had hoped. We asked a lot of questions before and during the work and the installers were very nice about answering them for us. We weren't excited about putting a new roof on but it looks so good that I wish I'd done it a couple of years ago!
Description of Work: We had our old wood shake roof taken off and replaced with a steel "wood shake look" roof, along with new gutters and downspouts.

Not happy. Gutters sit one inch above existing fascia boards. Appear to leak as well. Have called to have them come out to fix, but have not returned my calls. Gutters installed by screwing through gutter into wall instead of using a bracket. This might cause leaf debris to catch inside of downspout, causing backups. Just not impressed. Did damage to fascia boards when removing old gutters, moved position of satellite dish when asked specifically not to touch. Will not use again. Also disliked how the salesman for the gutters said that he was the guy who sold us our roof. Ha! Michael is not spelled Iain.
Description of Work: Remove old and install new aluminum gutters on house with new downspouts as well.

Our records indicate the gutters installed were completed on July 31, 2006. The only request for service came on August 2, 2006 when there was no rain in the area, and we have not heard from them since. We assume all is well.

It still leaks in one place whenever it rains. I called them and they came out a few times, but haven't been able to take care of the problem. The last time I called them, they said they would get back to me and I haven't heard from them.
Description of Work: They replaced the roof.

A new roofing system was installed in 2003. After several service calls from 2004-2006 the chimney cap was finally repaired by a sheet metal shop, which seemed to solve the problem. In 2007-2008 a new problem was reported involving ponding water on the flat portion of the roof. After extensive water testing of the section in question a temporary repair to raise the low spot was attempted, with no real success. In 2008, with the cooperation and understanding of the member, the area of roofing in question was completely opened up and the cause of the problem was found to be a leaking drain that went through an exterior wall. The drain was completely eliminated and the problem resolved. There have been no further reports of problems from the home owner.

TO DO SOME OF THE REMOVAL, THEY SUBCONTRACTED WORKERS WHOM WANTED ENTRY TO MY HOUSE, TO GET TO THE ROOF. CURRENTLY, ON THE FLAT PART, WE STILL HAVE LEAKS. DURO-LAST PRODUCT IS NOT RECOMMENDED. FLASHING WAS DONE VERY POORLY, AND GUTTERS ARE NOT INSTALLED CORRECTLY. MAJORITY OF WATER IS LEAKING ON SIDE OF HOUSE.
Description of Work: NEW ROOF AND FLAT ROOF (DURO-LAST). NEW ROOF WAS BUILT OVER OLD, BUT FLAT ROOF WAS MOSTLY OLD WOOD TAR. ALSO INSTALLED GUTTERS.

Our records indicate the roofing project was completed in 2002. The only service request was for a leak in December 2004. The installation department inspected the area and discovered dry rotted siding to be the cause, not the roofing material. The home owner was informed of the findings and it was recommended to replace the siding, after which Cal-Pac would return to flash the new siding at no additional cost. There has been no further contact from this home owner, so we must assume all is well.
