Well, I write reviews normally only if I have excellent experience or if I have awful one. Guess which one I had this time ;). I can agree with others here that Jose and his crew is very hard working, granted. They show up in time, start very early (gee, like 7am, I want to sleep!) and get a job done in one day normally. Jose is very responsive and returns calls rather quickly. So initially I was impressed and really motivated to work with him. Plus he had excellent reviews on Yelp (before, not any more). That's why I have contracted him to do mid-size project at my property. But... There is alway "but". The problem I had with Jose is his unwillingness to listen to any concerns, recommendations, and suggestions. I may describe it as "his way or highway" - if you ask too many questions, or want a job to be done in a particular way, or will try to oversee the job and correct issues as he progresses - he will most likely get angry, verbally abusive, unprofessional and at the end will refuse to work with you. So in his case customer is never right. Another big concern I have is that Jose is that he is rushing through work really hard. He wants to get a job done in one day no matter what, by all means, and quality suffers naturally. All small things related to quality of work get left behind. Like for instance simple position correctly gutter collector in concrete before it hardens, or center an opening for water main and gas in concrete so pipes do not touch concrete walls. I literally had to oversee and babysit every step of the project to make sure these small but still important things are done right. And this is something that I should not do because I'm paying for the job to be done end-to-end without me investing my time into it. While the job was done on schedule, the crew showed up early morning and was hard working until late evening - big plus and kudos to Jose's team, I have way too many concerns and issues with quality of his work. They did not compact soil and I've got cracks in fresh concrete after only two weeks after pouring!!! Guys, you suppose to compact soil, right? They put a drainage pipe right next to my foundation instead of a middle as it was planned. The channel drain they used is light-duty type instead of heavy duty as I initially wanted and planned to have. The channel drain was installed off-level and sinks below concrete slab level on one side - it's functional but looks looks awful. They did not put full expansion joins between the new concrete and my house foundation as needed, only 4-inch pieces of rubber and it still touches my foundation at the bottom - the whole reason of expansion joints to prevent touching and allow movements! They did not connect drain pipe to my existing underground drainage system and left a piece of pipe sticking from under concrete slab and I have wasted half a day finishing after them. The drain pipe was not even glued at all - I was able to pull it out by hands! They broke off piece of stucco on my house wall and did not care to fix it. Some of steps they poured turned out to wavy after they were finished - not much but still very noticeable to me. Not much to list here. I can go on about all small things that they have done wrong in my opinion and some may say that I ask too much, but for me it's very simple - or you do quality work or you don't do it at all. The worst part is that when I was trying to discuss my concerns with Jose he would just get very upset (to say at least) and say to my face that this job is too small and he does not make much money on it, and that I'm too special, and so on. This "small job" costs more that $3K, and I have paid extra for all extra things that I have requested to put in and still I get this kind of attitude? Thank you very much. I had Jose to do another simple job, which I though is impossible to screw up. It was simple replacement of a curb and gutter plus driveway approach. The only reason I wanted to do it is because the water was not flowing property and it was collecting across my driveway and eventually overflowing the approach. I had only one requirement - water must flow and gutter must be level. Well, he has managed to screw up this one too, water still not flowing through. He tied to patch it up (yes patch!) and somehow fix it after he poured concrete but it just made concrete look really bad and did not fix anything. And all expansion joints are are not straight. Is it really so hard to just draw a straight line? Bottom line. The only thing Jose can do is flat slab pouring IMHO. But if you think about more complex project involving drainage, custom design, some special requests I would strongly suggest to look somewhere else. And don't even think of asking too many questions :). I liked Jose's energy he puts into his work but his extreme rushing of work and lack of attention to details kills the deal for me. "Devil is in the detail" as they say.

Jose was prompt with all his visits, including a couple visits to our home to quote the job. His pricing was very fair, much better than we had been quoted by a much larger landscaping company. His team was onsite for 4-5 days, including demo and debris removal, site preperation, concrete pour and stamping, and then a final wash and cleanup after the concrete dried. We had plans drawn up in advance by a local landscape design firm, which made communicating our wishes for the patio much simpler. I would recommend this to anyone that is going to do a large patio. Jose was really great to work with, and is one of the hardest working people I have ever met. I would not hesitate to recommend Amaya's concrete to my friends and family and would use their services again in the future.
Description of Work: Jose and his team poured a new stamped concrete patio in our backyard. There was substancial demo and debris removal involved, as we had an old deck and a Tuff Shed that had to be torn down.

He verbally gave a bid, but he would not put it in writing, so I didn't hire him. I thought the quote was reasonable, so I asked him to put it in writing, so there weren't any differences once the job was done, and he wouldn't put it in writing. There was nothing that really stood out. I got his name off of Angie's List. I called a few people, and some wouldn't come out. He came out.

Description of Work: They replaced two sections of sidewalk, but they did not finish repairing two sets of steps. I've called once or twice to ask that they finish the job. I should not have paid in full before the job was finished.

I'm sorry, but I think you have made a mistake. We only do jobs in the Bay Area, in North California. Check the company you are reviewing next time, because you are making my buisness look bad. Thank you.

There was no charge for it. He was the subcontractor. I was dealing directly with the issue and he was totally fine with it. He understood and agreed it needs to be done. He did it. There were no issues since he did the repairs. Everything is great. In terms of responsiveness, it was a little hard to get him.
Description of Work: Amaya's Concrete came back and redid a retaining wall for me. The wall wasn’t straight so he just kind of straightened it out. It wasn’t really holding and I think he put some more reinforcement. He did the retaining wall in August but it was just not done very well. He was doing it as a side project and it was not his primary work.

Everything went smoothly. Each project took 3-5 days and we're quite happy with the results. Jose is quick to respond when you have a question or need a quote for a project.
Description of Work: Jose Amaya and his team did two projects for our house, one in November of '12 and Feb '13. Front yard and back yard renovation on a quarter acre lot. Large stamped concrete patio, stamped pathways, 10 brick planter boxes and 12 tall fence pillars. They perfectly matched the new brick with our 30 year old house facade. They are extremely punctual and quick. The price is almost half what most other companies bid, and the work is excellent. If you want changes to your plan or alterations, they're easy to work with. I would absolutely have them back to do more or recommend them to anyone in the area who needs concrete or brick work done. Nearly 150 feet of stamped concrete pathway Old 12x12 patio was torn out and replaced with 18 x 30 ft of 2-color stamped concrete. 2x Old concrete steps removed and re-poured to correct height and double the original width. 8x vegetable planting boxes made of brick 2x large custom multi-tier planter boxes in brick 12x 48" tall fence posts

The patio was not properly sealed and it rained the next day. I have called him to have him come out and fix it and no one ever called back. He was a very nice man and I believe was qualified to do the work, but he had a bad worker in the bunch. The eye sore portion represents approximately ten percent of the total project.

My job was small (40'x 3.5' walkway), so I had trouble finding someone who was interested in doing it. Mr. Amaya came and gave me the estimate within a week of my second call, and said he could do the job the next week. I told him I wanted to view jobs he had done. Although he indicated he would get me an address, he never followed though. If he had, I had planned to hire him. Apparently, he has gotten numerous referrals from Angie's List, and is very busy. The same thing happened to my handyman, the down side of using this service.
Description of Work: I hired another company that I got from a personal referral. The estimate was $1300.00.

Everything worked out really great. I am very satisfied with the outcome. They did do a good job. I do not feel comfortable discussing pricing at this time, but, it was very reasonable. The estimate was good and it was right on.
Description of Work: Amaya's poured some concrete and flagstone for us. It was a driveway extension and was extended by 4 feet. Also they poured an 8 X 24 concrete patio and a little walkway.

I called to get an estimate on some concrete work in my front yard. I called several times and left messages before my call was returned. The owner was going to come by on a Sunday afternoon to check it out and that morning before we left for church he called and asked if he could come by about 10:00am. I said that was fine because the area to be poured is in the front yard and didn't require us to be home. I called him the following Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday leaving several messages asking for a quote. I never received a return call. The last message I left was asking to please let me know even if he wasn't interested in doing the job. I am very disappointed. I have hired another company listed on Angie's List.
