BAIT AND SWITCH!!! BEWARE We recently had a pergola built at our home, the company came out and provided a professional estimate and included everything we wanted. However, after work started, and on the last day of construction, the company indicated they could not complete the electrical work (for safety reasons so how could we argue) we had contracted them for and then provided a small discount. Unfortunately, the discount was only for about half of what the actual work will cost in real life. In going back and forth with the owner, he indicated that they had refunded more than double what their electrical estimate was for them to complete. However, this only provides evidence to us that they did in fact bait and switch my wife and me. How could they perform the work for what ended up being approximately 1/4th the cost of two estimates I have subsequently had done for the electrical work they refused to complete? The company is not honest, they do not employ a real electrician as they eluded to in their estimate and they ended up being more expensive than all other estimates we originally had done. They actually ended up being our highest estimate (when we factor in needing to have the electrical work contracted out) because they promised they could do all the work at once, saving us a large headache of hiring another contractor. Yet, here we are, they backed out and only refunded a small portion of the original contract. In trying to resolve the issues (request a small, additional refund to cover more of the electrical work), the company indicated that they had to change the job and increase the size of our pergola and did not pass on any cost to us, so they wouldn't do it. However, this was their estimate and their mistake so why should they pass along any cost to us when their estimate was not correct. We never asked to change anything. I mistakenly paid the full bill, less the small discount for the electrical, thinking they would be stand up guys and help us get the job completed for around the price they refunded, as they hinted at when they backed out of the work. However, their one and only referral was almost double their refund. When I told them this they eventually gave me two more electricians names who, (electrician 1) is booked through the summer, and (electrician two) never returned my phone calls. PROS: - Nice, English speaking builders, friendly and easy to work with - Finished product is aesthetically pleasing and just what we wanted - Provided can of varnish, at our request, to coat our table (however we applied on our own) - Owner was nice, responsive and professional in trying to work through our issues, unfortunately not to a fair resolution in our experience. This is a pro because I have seen friends and family experiences turn into name calling and nearly physical altercations. CONS: - Bait and switch - The most expensive contractor out of 4 estimates (once we add back in 3rd party electrical) - A lot of dripping and oozing sap (we were not told this would happen or how to care for it) - Paint is bubbling in many spot (not made aware this could occur with darker paints) - Job site left with a lot of sawdust, screws and scrap wood - No “finishing touches” on our built-in table, many rough edges and splinters on our eating surface edges, catching on clothes, skin, etc.

George, the owner, came to give me the estimate. He was personable and very experienced. He took his time to explain the process and the available options. The deck turned out great. The demo went well and the construction took 4 days. Eric was in charge of the construction and was a true craftsman. He was a perfectionist and made sure that the deck was constructed and completed to his high standards.
Description of Work: Removed an existing 8' x 12' wooden second story deck and replaced it with a new 10' x 12' wooden deck with composite floor boards and railing tops. All wood was given 2 coats of paint before being delivered to the job site.

no follow up, i moved on to other contractors
Description of Work: I had the owner out to make a bid on a major deck replacement. Seemed like a competent enough contractor and was nice and pleasant. He took a bunch of measurements and then was supposed to get back to me with a bid. I never heard from him again. I left work early one afternoon to meet him and basically wasted an afternoon of work. If he did not want the job or was too busy he should have had the courtesy to call and tell me this.

They were excellent! They were very professional and did excellent work. People that come to see us go "Wow!". I like their attention to detail and their interest in what we really wanted, and just very personable about it. They could look around to see some other structural things that they gave us advice on and took care of and wrapped it into the package. It was just a very good experience. We have recommended them already.

George Hesse @ North County Deck is an "old school" contractor; he promises only what he can deliver and he keeps his promises. When our Sunbrella awning material split along a seam, he contacted the awning manufacturer -- the new owner of the company that made the awning 4 years ago -- and arranged to have them come down to San Diego county to pick it up and repair it, and scheduled a date for them to reinstall it. George attended the reinstall to make sure everything went well. It did. Awning looks great & works fine.

George came out to the house and planned the open lattice patio cover and gave us an estimate the same day. Work was done several weeks later, but the wood was already precut and painted to match house. Workmen were careful to make the project level, sturdy, and attractive. Project took three days. Clean up was good every day. Workmen were professional and courteous.

George at North County Deck & Patio was very professional and very knowlegable about his business. He was a great source of knowledge for a homeowner as being the first quote on the project. His price and his knowledge is why we picked him to install a new wood lattice patio cover in our back yard. All the employee's at North County Deck & Patio were great at communicating to us before, during and after the install. Even after we changed the plans on the first day of the install George and his Forman Tom were very agreeable and very customer friendly. The best part of all is that the patio cover looks great. It's better than I imagined. I'm totally satisfied with the price and the service I received from North County Deck & Patio. I strongly recommend them.

I like him a lot better. He was very knowledgeable. He spends some extra time to explain what our options were and what we should be looking for. I don’t know if I’ll be using him just because the project came out a little bigger than just a deck restoration. Certainly, I would love to include him for future job and I would definitely contact him again. He was trying to educate us. He’s very personable. Like I said, just the fact that he took the extra time to explain things to us is something that we really appreciate.

I cannot say enough good things about dealing with North County Deck & Patio. George the Owner came out in a timely fashion, wrote the quote on the spot. I initially wanted to just have the covers repaired rather than replaced. He was helpful and pointed out that there was significant dry rot and because of paint possibly covering up more damage he recommended that they be totally replaced. Obviously, it was more than I wanted to spend. Jason (I believe he is a Manager) stopped by my home before work was started and reviewed the measurements and requirements. There was a little delay because the mill required lead time vs.the demo schedule vs. the build schedule. No hardship on my part. Tom their senior installer was very helpful during all of the installation and does only exceptional work. A header was replaced at no added cost and care was taken to seal all areas that contact the house in order to prevent premature degradation. Another installer, I believe his name was Ryan took extra care to touch up the painted surfaces. Tom & Ryan cleaned the site daily and the equipment that stayed on site was neatly stored out of the way. All timbers and lumber was painted at their shop which eliminates paint drips and ensures that all surfaces are sealed. The finished product was as good as it gets, this may be substantiated by the fact that photos of my job appear on NCD&P's websi te.
Description of Work: Removed damaged wooden patio covers. Replaced patio covers (four covers or approximately 1000 sq. ft.). This included ALL new lumber which was pre-pained at their shop, installed and touched up.

Our deck broke free from our house due to a mismanaged storm drain by the city. George came out and gave us a reasonable quote to demo and clear and rebuild to code a new deck and stairs. George was very knowledgeable about codes, materials and the permitting process for older and potentially historic homes. Rick came out and cleared the old deck and built a fabulous new deck system very quickly. George's team was willing to work with the city as the city was simultaneously fixing a hole that had formed right where a deck foundation was to be located. George came out later and personally fixed our gate and wood capped wall that was incorrectly installed by a previous company. Awesome. Best detail that really impressed us: We have a heavy textured stucco exterior. The deck was cut to fit around the texture bumps for a clean look.
Description of Work: Demolished and removed a damaged and unsafe upper deck with stair system. Showed us various material samples and options and constructed our synthetic deck with wood and cable railing. Made sure our deck and foundations were to code and fixed problems caused by the existing deck.

Like the other reviews their estimate was a bit more than others. But their work is top notch. I especially like that this is a family business, the owner's sons and cousins did most of the work. They were always good at cleaning up the area after work each day.

This was a very extensive project. I had requested maximum use of composite materials and treated lumber. The support structure included several very large beams with one long opening above a two-car garage. I received several estimates which were twice the estimate from North County Deck. I had read many positive comments from Angie's List about the company. That, and the price convinced me to use them. George Hesse gave me a very complete estimate, and lots of choices for the materials and design. The support structure would have to be treated wood, and the decking, posts, and railing could be composite. He suggested Timber-Tech, saying his experience with them was better (and cheaper) than Trex. In addition, he suggested a composite coating for the part of the deck that was over an existing part of the structure. His experience and expertise were very apparent. The construction started on time. The job foreman, Rick, was very precise and I was quite amazed at the effort and attention to detail he put forth to make everything exactly as promised. There was nothing on this job that was "half-way" done. The project was scheduled to take 6-8 weeks, and was finished in that time. During that time, work was done every day except for one illness day and a couple of rain days. When finished, the deck was actually finished. It needed no extra painting, touch-up, or anything else that is sometimes left undone during a project. They did discover a few issues with some underlying termite damage and a little extra stucco work. George provided the necessary repairs at very little extra cost, and his "subs" were just as efficient as he was. I am very pleased with the work. In addition, everyone associated with the job were extremely polite, professional, and always answered my questions accurately and honestly. I always felt free to call George and discuss any issues or changes, and he made sure it was taken care of. I would highly recommend this company, and I will use them again.

We were pleased with the finished product. George and his crew were easy and efficient to work with, they even got it completed before his estimated finish date. George was realistic in his bid, and included painting the material for the cover, drawing plans and submitting it to the City for the permit. He was responsive with return calls and Sherry in his office was easy to talk to and reliable making sure George got any information I wanted him to have. Overall, a very good experience, I would recommend North County Patio & Deck to anyone.
Description of Work: George and his crew constructed a wood patio cover across the full length of our house. There were 2 sections following the existing patio. They prepped and painted the material before it arrived at our house. They were considerate and cleaned up each day when they finished.

They did an incredible job that for four years has looked beautiful. Every aspect of their work has help up beyond my expectations. I am by nature a highly critical person, but I am totally satisfied with the work they did.
Description of Work: A large patio cover was constructed. It was built from pilings deeply buried in the ground and attached to the wall of my home. It was 18 x 28 feet and included some special curved corners. I am writing this report almost four year after the work was completed because of the extreme satisfaction their work has continued to provide. I have had a number of people comment on the extraordinary craftsmanship that they used in the construction. Window washers tell me they are usually afraid to walk on a patio cover, but find this one the most solid they have ever seen. When I had my house painted, the painters mentioned several times that work was the best they had ever seen.

Really pleased with the job from start to finish. George came out a couple of days after the phone call requesting an estimate and got me an estimate the next day. Though not the lowest price I received, I selected NC Deck based on my dealings with them to date and the productive suggestions about materials etc. George made when putting together the estimate. I was anticipating using wood, but George suggested I use a composite for the decking and rails and I'm really pleased with the result. Though the job took a little longer to complete due to finishing other bigger jobs and the holidays, I was really pleased with the result, which entailed a complete rebuild of my 2nd floor deck (~ 12 x 13ft), with the exception of the two metal support posts. The guys doing the work were great, quick and cleaned everything up each day. There was one small issue that George fixed very promptly. Overall it was a great experience working with George and his team and I recommend them without reservation.

See the description of services preformed for details. This project went very well, from the first discussion with George regarding the unique issues relating to the structural re-build to the final decisions surrounding the covered deck restoration. This work took over three weeks to complete, a little longer than we had anticipated. There was some delay due to shorter work days because of the 100 degree days (the deck is in full sun) and because there was some unexpected personal changes. George asked me to work with him as he fit our project into his schedule and working with his staffing challenges. He was very responsive at all times. The quality of his work and the commitment to customer service is excellent.
Description of Work: We have a rather large (31'X14') wood deck we wanted replaced with composite decking and a separate (4'X15') covered area that had indoor outdoor carpeting we wanted replaced with a solid surface material. George Hesse (owner) came out and evaluated the project. He found (and I agreed) that the supporting structure would need to be replaced so it would be able to support the load of the composite decking (heavier than wood). We discussed several ways this could be done. George took my suggestion to add a secondary header to shorten the span to the header at the house rather than increasing the size of the joists and changing out the main header already in place. This saved us a bit of money and solved the support problem. I mention this because it is an example of how George is willing to work with his clients if their suggestions are practical. We also wanted a unique design feature on the railing system (iron railings with a top board of composite) which he engineered for us. George let us know that the covered deck (indoor/outdoor carpeting) was an unknown until the carpeting was removed and the underlayment was exposed. It would either be OK to put down the composite solid surface or the underlayment would need to be replaced. It turned out that not only did the underlayment need replacing but the posts supporting the roof over this deck needed to be not only replaced but moved to a point that they would rest on the header supporting the floor of this deck. These posts were originally place at the end of the cantilever of the deck and had begun to rot and sag. George allowed me to do the tear out of the underlayment saving us some money in the end. The finished deck is now sturdier and safer than the original.
