Description of Work: Complaint against Cornerstone Remodel [Kitchen and Bath] |a. ABANDONED JOB AND DAMAGED PROPERTY |i. Hasn't performed job correctly nor completed. Damaged property and contents [details below]. CONTRACT stated estimated start date of July 2, 2013 with completion July 31, 2013... 29 days for completion. |ii. California State Licensing Board (CSLB) listed suspended license status. Upon calling, we were told of disciplinary action issued against Cornerstone Remodel for failing to complete a job and hiring an unlicensed contractor. |iii. Having unfortunately already signed agreement with a down payment May 7, 2013, owner Bill Lamme told us he'd just fixed his license status with CSLB. We therefore wanted assurances and pushed out the start date from July 2nd to August, then July, September, October, November, and finally started the demolition December 3rd 2013 to wait on reinstatement of contractors license, workers comp insurance, and the written addition to the contract of no subcontractors. [We had seen a SUSPENDED LICENSE warning for failure to comply with a bond payout on the Contractors State License Board website for Cornerstone Remodel, DBA Bath Planet San Diego, 3110 S Sante Fe Ave, San Marcos, CA 92069 (760)727-6315, under ownership of William Lamme [Bill Lamme], sole owner, License # 696640. |b. DAMAGED NEW REFRIGERATOR: |i. We have pictures of: Before, during [showing refrigerator uncovered below cabinets] being pulled away from wall with crow-bar type tool and wood cabinet pieces coming down jagged scraping refrigerator paint off several panels and sides, and after pictures |ii. Pictures of scratches in several areas - they were to move the refrigerator (as they had done previously) before continuation of kitchen cabinet removal]. We were very specific on moving and protecting the $3,500 Kenmore Elite refrigerator we were just finishing payments on. Owner Bill Lamme came out to verify and has not returned calls to fix damages or complete the job |c. KITCHEN CABINETS: |i. Hanging cabinets were made an inch too short in depth per two (2) separate installers so the twelve (12) inch pullout drawers that were also ordered from Cornerstone at the time of the "custom remodel with new cabinetry don't fit - we had to make them 9" instead, and the inside measurements are now only 8" so that is why your items wont fit in them now". In essence, their mistake would remove over 4 inches of useable depth space [not to mention the waste of inches on both sides as well - one side is understandable with the slider mechanism necessary]. They are also over 4 ½ inches high instead of 2 inches - which makes it impossible to see the spice jars and other items inside. |ii. One of the hanging cabinets has 2 false board pieces since the did not measure correctly and thus filled in empty unusable space so my turntables no longer fit and much of the contents are now in the garage [we wanted more not less storage - one of the reasons for the remodel] |iii. Many shelves are simply missing |iv. Cabinetry not braced in middle nor back - the 4 small pegs [less than ½ inch long and ¼ inch wide] slid under the 39 ½ inch shelf can't hold weight of dinner plates - not to mention the other items in our former cabinets that don't fit the just under 12" depth now. |v. Drawers and shelves not fully completed - nor enough of them [a couple are sitting on top of each other and wrong sizes in cabinets with our bowls/casserole dishes bracing them up...therefore not able to use] |vi. Doors and cabinets do not align correctly in some areas [scrape on some and others bow out]. |vii. Side door next to refrigerator hits light switch and top of cabinet so the worker removed the door to work on it at the shop and never returned (leaving hardware attached and no door] |d. KITCHEN LIGHT RAIL [UNDERMOUNT LIGHTS] |i. One cabinet is without the promised/paid for lights [all other cabinets have the under-cabinet lights]. |e. KITCHEN GRANITE: |i. Cut crooked - STOVE CANNOT sit back evenly toward wall on one side as the granite counter top was cut crooked and pinches the stove from sliding back |ii. Liquids don't drain toward the sink, but pool in middle and flow to the floor now |f. KITCHEN STOVE: |i. The top of the stove is cracked. Perhaps while they tried to push the stove back unsuccessfully with the crooked granite countertop?? |g. KITCHEN FLOOR TILE: |i. NOT CLEANED OR SEALED [GROUT STILL ON TOP & LUMPY IN SOME AREAS...AND CRACKED GROUT IN SOME PLACES. BLUE TAPE ON FLOOR AROUND SOME CABINETS]. So, obviously the tile has not been sealed as per contract either.... |h. KITCHEN BASEBOARDS: |i. Did not complete |i. KITCHEN PAINT: |i. Did not use skip-trowel style as agreed in contract [it's a hit and miss orange peel instead that we were specific in the written contract about] |ii. Did not paint thoroughly [white areas showing where coverage is sparse] |iii. Did not clean paint from outlet covers |iv. Did not paint behind stove or refrigerator |j. BATHROOM FLOOR TILE [25 SQ FT] & WALL/CEILING TOUCH-UP PAINT |i. We paid $600 for removal of existing tile and installation of 25 square feet of new tile we bought separate from Cornerstone. Our previous tile was straight when Cornerstone removed it. |ii. Incomplete installation - pieces missing on sides |iii. Tile is noticeably very crooked [they said they could just move our sink away from the wall on one side and put several layers of something to make it look straight [....which still would be and look crooked at sink, bathtub, door, etc...] |iv. Many areas are badly scratched on the marble tile [we had carefully inspected each piece before bringing them home from the specialty store we bought it from. Cornerstone said it was "normal" to have it scratch easily. It is tile we have used previously without it scratching, and these scratches are from tools during Cornerstone's installation [some deep gouges in straight lines] |v. Cracked/damaged drywall above tile where they used tools |vi. Sink put back in a manner that it is not able to move at all without breaking the drain line |vii. Did not do the touch-up paint an inch above the sink |k. DEMO HAUL-AWAY COSTS: |i. Cornerstone did not haul away items that were removed for the remodel as per the contract. They were to haul everything except 2 small kitchen cabinets we intended to mount in our shed. They were severely splintered and not of use [no fault, just a consequence of the demo], so we asked for them to be hauled away with all other items. |The only items hauled away were the kitchen sink, the old kitchen countertops, the remaining cabinets, and our kitchen tile. |The bathroom marble floor tile was strewn out on our driveway by our car with left over paint, and grout. |The bathroom vanity and bathroom sink were ripped apart from each other and thrown in our backyard. Remaining kitchen cabinets and hardware and nails/screws were also thrown outside (some on the walkway and others in the nearby dirt) |The old baseboards from the kitchen were also thrown out back near the bathroom sink. |WE FINALLY HAD TO PAY "JUNK KING" COMPANY TO COME OUT AND HAUL AWAY THE ITEMS CORNERSTONE DID NOT HAUL AWAY |l. We have contacted Cornerstone Many, Many times to correct and complete the project since they flaked in February 2014. [Phone records and pictures available for all]. |Stan, Bill's Father-in-Law, has been responsive in returning calls over the months when Bill fails to call back or his workers fail to show on a scheduled day. Mary in the office has likewise been fairly responsive. |After many calls to Stan, Bill, the Owner, finally came out to the house on Saturday April 26, 2014 [after no-showing a scheduled appointment on Saturday April 12]. Bill inspected and verbally verified all items for correction and completion above, promised to make the corrections, and even sent out a worker who took new measurements for cabinets, removed the door next to the refrigerator, and a baseboard piece from our living room to match the unfinished kitchen baseboard. |Unfortunately we've paid ahead of schedule for work that's not yet done as Bill kept asking for additional payments through his workers. I told the last worker that I'm not paying the last installment ahead of completion, as per California law and per our written contract agreement, until the kitchen and bath is corrected and damages fixed. I showed him dates and the cashed checks proving that I had already paid more than I should have by contract at this point. |m. WE HAVEN'T SEEN NOR HEARD FROM ANYONE AT CORNERSTONE SINCE. Our incorrect, sloppy, and unfinished project is unacceptable ☹ | |Ron and Debbie Hagen, Poway |
