Mike was great in listening to what we wanted and making suggestions. He didn't try to oversell us items we didn't need. For example, we felt our cabinets were fine and he agreed. We asked if we should reface them and he told us that refacing cabinets can be labor intensive and doing so isn't a way to save money. Another designer said that putting new countertops on existing cabinets was "tacky" and yet my kitchen looks amazing as if the counters and cabinets were installed together. Mike's team was careful and didn't make one mark on the cabinets when they took off the old counter. I liked all the sub work as well. Glass tile looked great, the quartz countertops were perfect, and the electrical and plumbing work was done well, too. They installed the new appliances quickly and we've had no issues so far. Everyone showed up on time or contacted us if they were going to be late (which was rare -- I believe we had just one day where the electrician had to reschedule). They kept dust to a minimum by putting up plastic to contain the area and cleaned up every day before they left, both inside and out. Total job took about 3 weeks, just like Mike said. I would definitely recommend Cal Coast Construction and will use them in the future.

TL;DR - This person was very difficult to work with, didn't answer their phone, and seemed dodgy. They didn't do the work for us. More details: * We scheduled an appt to look at our fence for Wednesday at 4pm. * Wednesday at 3:15, he called to say he wouldn't be able to make it. * I explained we had driven from Templeton to Oceano specifically to meet with him,and he said the absolute earliest he could be there was 6. I told him to call me when he was on his way. He tried VERY hard to get out of coming at all. He kept saying he could just stop by when we weren't there, or could call me on the phone when he was there. I explained that I wanted to be there so we could talk about a few different options, etc. He obviously wasn't very happy with having to meet with me. This is when things just started feeling "off" with him. * We left to run some errands, planning to be back by 6. * He called at ~5:15, and said he was in grover beach, and headed to the house now. We said we were about 20 minutes away, and we would meet him at the house. * He called me back again when we were about halfway there and started asking a bunch of questions, obviously to try to get it out of the way so I wouldn't have to meet him there. I was driving in heavy traffic (in pismo area around 5, traffic sucks), and I said I couldn't talk on the phone, but that I would be back shortly. * He called me back a few minutes later (when we were only about 5 minutes from the house) and said "I'll save you the drive time, this is going to be way too expensive, you won't want me to do it". Keep in mind at this point he knew barely anything about the project, our goals, or what we wanted to accomplish. He was making assumptions about things because he couldn't just wait a few minutes for us to show up (keeping in mind the EARLIEST time he said he could be there after rescheduling was still 30 minutes away). The whole thing felt very sleezy, and he jerked us around all afternoon. Also, his website says "We always answer our phones", but I found the exact opposite. Nearly every single time I called him, he let it go to voicemail, and half those times his voicemail was full. That to me a is a tell tale sign that you should never do business with a contractor. If they're screening their calls, AND they obviously have lots of other people who are trying to get ahold of them (full voicemail)... that probably means they're trying to dodge people, or at a minimum are over committed, and would likely rush through any job you hire them to do. I would suggest staying away.
Description of Work: We tried to get a bid for doing some repair/replacement on approximately 70' of existing wood fence. He was difficult to work with, and showed signs of being shady.

Dear Angies List Customer, I am sorry I was unable to provide you with assistance on your project. When I arrived at your home, I was not comfortable with the scope of work or procedures you requested. I chose not to work for you based on unrealistic expectations and unpleasant interactions over the phone. Having been in business for 15 years, I usually realize when I will not be able to work with a customer successfully. I apologize for arriving 15 minutes late to our appointment. I hope you are able to find a contractor who can meet your goals and expectations and I am sorry for any inconvenience. Serving the San Luis Obispo County has been a pleasure and huge blessing. The people I meet and have the opportunity to work for in this area have treated me well and the hard work does not go unrecognized. Growing up in San Luis Obispo, and staying on the Honor Roll through high school and college has afforded me many other career options. However, the day-to-day production as Owner/Operator at CAL COAST Construction brings joy that I would not expect from any other career I have explored. The joy of building/remodeling another's dream home is priceless. Thank you SLO county for being so good to me for the last 15 years and I look forward to offering exceptional service for another 30 years from now.

Description of Work: Refreshingly professional. Cal Coast repaired/replaced most of our outside deck on two sides of the house. They were more expensive than some of the other companies considered, but the quality and professional service was worth it. The project took longer and cost more than the original estimate - but this was due to unseen issues with infrastructure. At all times the owner, Caleb, who ran the job, kept me informed of any surprises and offered options of what to do. I always felt I was getting excellent advice and reasonable cost/quality choices. We spoke nearly every day about the job and I was kept fully informed about every detail. The end product is world-class and I've already contracted Cal Coast to do additional work for me.

Dear Angie's List member, I sincerely apologize for my unresponsiveness. I, Caleb Lopez, personally take all of the business calls and messages, document them, and give call-backs as needed. All of my calls are routed to my cell phone and I am available my phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. My phone is always on my person and the ringer is always on (I have a very understanding wife). I do not like to turn down projects, rather I would work 16 hour days (which I often do). Not returning your call cost me as a business owner profit potential and un upset potential customer. I wish I would have received your message and returned your call. I am sorry for your negative experience. Caleb Lopez Owner/Operator

Our 40 year old fence was falling down. I knew I needed a new fence but hated to lose this fence since my dad built it for me. I had two estimates and I knew immediately I would choose Cal Coast Construction as the owner, Caleb Lopez, said he could save it for me. The other estimate did not suggest this. Caleb understood my feelings and said the wood was still good. It was the right choice. Caleb is very personable and explained everything he planned to do. The estimate was even priced by the various jobs needed to be done. Two of his crew arrived 15 minutes before the designated time and began work. They called us out several times to check if we approved what they were doing. There was no loud music playing as we've experienced with other contractors. They did a terrific job and we are more than happy. We have several jobs needed on our house and Caleb and his crew will be the ones we call.

Terrific ! In my first meeting with the member, we discussed the damage to her pergola and possible options for repair. At the time she was planning a large 4th of July party, which was only a few weeks away. The full scope of work involved building a temporary wall to support the pergola during demolition and construction, removing the existing concrete footings supporting the old posts (which involved a jackhammer and breaker bar), removing and replacing the posts, setting new concrete footings, computer color-matching the surrounding beams, painting the posts with two coats of stain, and hauling/disposal of the concrete and old posts. Additionally, the member chose custom stained glass caps for the beams which we also purchased and installed. I told her that we often perform projects in which we receive no profit, and I would make this such a project. Upon completion, I charged her for the cost of materials, gas, tool usage, and disposal fees. Despite a busy schedule, I was able to complete the project well before July 4th. When the time came for me to do a 6-month check-up of the project, I had a chance to speak with the member. I asked if she was happy with how the project turned out and she said she was "...absolutely pleased with everything." She did not recall the above report, but showed me work that another contractor had performed which she was not completely pleased with. During my visit, I performed several small tasks (serviced her water heater, adjusted a mounting bracket in her living room, etc) around her home free of charge. She was very happy that I had stopped by and requested that Cal Coast Construction do painting and plumbing in the near future. Based on my interaction with the member, I think it is possible that she may have confused my work with another contractor who was working at her home around the same time. I sincerely care about each project and customer that I perform work for. Many of my customers have become life-long friends. I enjoy adding a personal touch to each project and face to face interaction with each customer. I take pride in providing exceptional service at a reasonable price. Ensuring that customers are happy with the work when we leave the job-site is my goal. I love my job and will happily go out of my way to make sure that each customer is pleased when we are finished. Caleb (Cal Coast Construction) exceeded my expectations! We have several projects that need to be done on our aging home (fence/gate construction, electrical improvements, staircase modification, window replacement, and, eventually backyard remodel). Caleb met with us for almost a full hour just to make sure that he had a clear picture of what we wanted done, our priorities, and our budget. He offered us several options in order to keep the jobs as uncomplicated as possible, respecting our budget. We decided to start with repairing the front gate and replacing the two side gates. The gentlemen who worked on the project were professionals who did exceptionally high quality work. They encountered an unexpected situation (obscured, rotted retaining walls and stairs under one of the gates) and presented us with options on how to proceed (again, respecting our budget while ensuring that the construction was high quality and safe). They were patient and respectful (to my elderly mother who has "memory challenges" and repeatedly asked for/needed explanations about the on-going work, as well as neighbors who stopped by). They cleaned up at the end of the work days and removed/disposed of all debris (even swept up all of the saw dust) at the end of the project. The gates that they built are amazing...sturdy and beautiful. They attended to all of the small details, too; for example, they ensured that the locks on both gates were calibrated to use the same key. (I know that this seems like a minor detail, but I have worked with SO many contractors and handymen who would never have done this without being told. This small detail made me feel as if Caleb and his folks really cared about making my life easier!). Cal Coast Construction will begin work on our electrical system within the next few weeks. I fully intend to make Cal Coast Construction my "one stop" for any and all future home repairs, remodels, and construction.
Description of Work: Repaired front gate (heavy wood, required removal and significant modification, as well as repositioning when re-installed). Removed two old side gates and built new (replacement) gates. Removed retaining wall and rotted wooden stairs and built and installed new retaining wall and stairs. (Three full days of work.)

The project went really well. Caleb and his crew disassembled our porches and removed all rotting wood, while preserving and reusing the redwood that was still in good shape when rebuilding the rails. I was very happy about the way it was done, because it lowered the overall cost as well as not wasting a valuable product. They showed up on time, were very kind and courteous. Caleb checked with me every step of the way to make sure I was satisfied with the process and results. The painter contracted with Cal-Coast was excellent, and very conscientious. Overall,I am very happy to recommend Cal-Coast Construction, and plan to use them again in the future.

We are more then pleased with the results of the two projects we have used Cal Coast Construction. We currently have them bidding on a third. Please refer to my description of Services Performed for more details. I give Caleb and Cal Coast Construction an unqualified positive reference.
Description of Work: We have used Caleb and Cal Coast Construction for two projects. The first project was to landscape an elevated bank in the back yard and construct a staircase and deck. Caleb's input on design and construction alternatives totally altered our approach. The final deck, fencing, staircase, wall, etc. was much better then we had ever imagined. And below our budget. We were so pleased with the results that we solicited his thoughts on the design and construction of a very large platform deck and landscaping for the yard. His ideas were excellent and the cost was on target. As the project proceeded our thoughts changed ( this is probably a construction guys biggest nemisis ) and Caleb was responsive to our changes. Once again the final results exceeded our highest wishes. We have one more project in the backyard and we have decided to use him once again. We are just in now in the ideation and bidding stage. We have no doubts that he will give us a good price and an excellent finished product.
