I contracted with Tom Anderson (of Vision in Wood) to build a fence at my house in North San Jose. He gave me an acceptable price and did the job. Instead of planning the new post locations to be between the old posts, he ended up having to remove all the old posts and the concrete, instead of just cutting them off. This proved to be very difficult and I felt bad and in a moment of weakness paid him additional $200. Then in another moment of weakness, paid him without having received a final invoice. Three phone calls and an email later, still no invoice which I need for my tax records, He also was to bid on another job and, again, after phone calls and email, no bid. Like I would hire him again anyway!! In summary, a poor job of planning and poor response to my requests. Not a good choice of contractors!!!

I wanted to replace the side gate to the house that I just purchased. The gate was in bad shape and the gate posts needed replacing. Additionally, the cement that it was on was damaged and needed to be fixed. I contacted several fence companies only to find that the job was too small for them to handle. I contacted handymen per the fence company's recommendation, and after seeing my design, the handymen declined the jobs due to complexity and detail. I went back to the fence companies, and one of them recommended Tom Anderson from Visions in Wood. I contact Tom, and at first, our communication was a little spotty. I couldn't lock down exact dates with him, but he assured me that he would come out to do an estimate. Once that day came, and I met Tom, I realized that I had hired a craftsman, not just a handyman. He gave me an approximate estimate, and then he was off. The spent the weekend reviewing my hand-sketched design carefully to draw up a complete quote. His quote was exacting down to the dollar and his labor was really reasonable. On the day of the job, he and two others from his team spent the day at the house building the new side-gate. They demoed old one and hauled off all the scrap. The final gate ended up being even more beautiful than I could imagine, and it was clear that Tom was not about taking short-cuts. He was into every little detail and even added a detail that I was thinking of asking him to do but forgot! The result is a fantastic gate that my new neighbors have already commented on how beautiful it is! Thanks to the Tom and guys at Visions in Wood, I have a side gate worthy of the home that it stands next to! FYI, Tom isn't officially managing this Angie's List account that was created by someone else, but he did such a fantastic job that I would have easily started an Angie's List account for him like the other reviewer here did.

Shared fence section was blown down and broken in a storm. Did the job as promised, fence looks good. We used him a few years ago to repair another section of a fence that was shared with another neighbor. When I asked him if he would have any objection to my listing him on Angie's List, he said no objection, but just to clarify though that he does not have a business license at this time. $400 cost was shared with our neighbor.
Description of Work: Replaced two sections of fence with two support posts set in concrete.
