Description of Work: Sigure painted the interior of the house. Instead of two and a half weeks it took three months. the faux painted I requested was done in the incorrect style, the trim and cabinetry as well as the doors were primed with the incorrect primer (water base over oil), there were multiple face plates which were not replaced after painting, cabinet door handles missing, poor edge work. All around a poor job.

Description of Work: There were communication issues from the start. I requested an estimate on-line to repair some siding that had deteriorated from moisture. They did not respond so I called and made an appointment. The estimator called me back later and we agreed on a different date and time to meet his needs. It was a no show. I called and was told I had the date wrong. We set another date. The estimator was running late. He was not sure what material he would be using in the estimate and insured that he would get back to me. I told him that it was important to me that the replacement siding be to the current and improved standard (not the fiberboard material that was popular 20 years ago). I received the estimate a few days later and called to back to meet with him and review the contract. Even though the estimate was (very) high for the small repair, I figured that it was be a no hassle event since they are diamond certified. I gave him a deposit and waited and waited. I called and they sent another person out to see what materials were needed. Again I waited. I asked for more information on the progress of my repair and for more information on the material that they wanted to use. One of their folks dropped off a sample. I asked what it was made of since I did not want to repeat the repair if an inferior siding material was being used (particle/fiber board). The reply I got was that it was the best stuff currently available. I did not get a description of what the siding was made of. I went to the supplier myself and got a copy of the spec sheet. By now I was truly not satisfied and called to cancel. The owner of the company wanted to work out the terms of the contract and agreed to refund our money; which I received in short order. |The explanation that I got for the communications issues and lack of response was that they were having some staffing problems/shortages.

A few months ago we had a pipe break inside the wall of our house. We used Ilan Sigura to represent us in the negotiations with our insurance company and he did a fantastic job? We had water damage to a bathroom, our family room, and kitchen. When the insurance company water abatement company came, they discovered asbestos in the wallboard and lead in the bathroom tile and the abatement company ripped it all out, so we were down to the studs. The insurance company had the abatement people provide an estimate for the repairs, which we thought was much less than it would take to put everything back together. We knew we needed a professional to help us get a fair settlement with the insurance company. A friend recommended Ilan Sigura, and he came over the next day to look at the damage. He went room to room and told us what needed to be done and what the insurance company should cover. The insurance company original settlement did not include many items, e.g., the cost of permits, which Ilan informed us was needed for the bathroom; and once we pulled a permit we needed to upgrade fixtures, fans, faucets and toilets to meet the current codes. The insurance company sent their own adjuster to see the damage, and Ilan changed his schedule to accommodate him and be at the meeting. Watching Ilan negotiate with the adjuster was like watching a master in action: he knew everything that needed to be done, and what the insurance company needed to cover to get everything back into shape and matching so it did not look like a patch job. After the meeting, Ilan drew up his estimate of the repairs and spent the next two weeks negotiating with the adjuster on items and costs. In the end, due to Ilan?s efforts, the insurance company settled with us for three times the original offer. He was brilliant and took all the anxiety off of us during a difficult time when we had no idea how to get a fair deal from the insurance. We were very pleased with the job he did and would highly recommend him if you find yourself in a similar position.

Excellent all around! Ilan, the owner is wonderful to work with! He met with us on a Friday night at 7pm to accommodate my husband's work schedule and had a quote for us Sunday evening 2 days earlier than what he said is was perfect for us because we needed to start the work soon! The bathroom work done by Jose and Angel is AMAZING!!! BEYOND EXCELLENT work!!! The tile work is very detailed and done perfectly, literally no flaws!! Lighting work throughout the house looks fabulous and flows very well though out the kitchen and family room! Ilan has great quality lights and better to buy from him! The bathroom lighting was also done very well, with great quality too! My husband and I couldn't be more happier with Sigura Construction and we look forward to having them do our backyard work!

First, since I live 500 miles from this house, I had to pick a contractor who was willing to communicate with me by email and phone since I could not be on site. Second I needed a company who had experience working with insurance companies. Third I felt Sigura Construction was working for me and not for the insurance company. Now that the work is finished, I feel this is a good choice. I made some bad assumptions when this task started. First I thought the insurance company was my friend. Second I allowed the insurance company to use their engineering company to inspect and write up his report which was slanted in favor of the insurance company and caused me some heartburn. There was considerable time spent discussing and coming to agreement on the needed repairs to my house. You can tell there was multiple changes to the quote/cost when the first quote from the insurance company was $19,640.07 in June 3, 2013 and their last quote was $81,776.34 in January 31, 2014. One thing Sigura told me was it may take a long time to fix your house right. The work was done in my opinion in two stages. The first part was to remove the damaged portion of the house that can be seen. When this was done there was reevaluation in terms of what more needed repairs. At first the insurance company did not want to remove the damaged hard wood floor. Once it was determined that the existing hardwood was to thin to resurface and use, the insurance company allowed the hardwood floor to be removed, the damage to the sub floor was exposed. The sub floor was removed and damage to the foundation was found and repaired all with cost approved by the insurance company and Sigura Construction. The floor was leveled as part of my cost, but was necessary. Since the damage from the car was approved and paid by the insurance company, the reconstruction of the house moved along well in my opinion even with repairs being done over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. One area that this contractor did was kept his word. I met with the contractor on February 27, 2014 and during this meeting asked if he could complete this task by March 28, 2014. He said yes he could have it done. I made arrangements for the renter to be able to move in on March 28, 2014. The work on the inside of the house was complete. There was a couple of items on the outside of the house that was not complete, but it did not affect the renter from moving in.
Description of Work: The contractor coordinated with insurance company the cost to do the repairs to the house. This task was on going since, as more portions of the house was uncovered or removed, more damage was found. This new area of damage that was uncovered needed to be determined as to be caused by the car hitting my house. Also the cost to repair had to be agreed to by insurance company and my contractor. The contractor went to the city of Redwood City and obtained the permit needed to do repairs to my house. The contractor installed a temporary Chain Link Fence around the front of my property while repairs to the house was being done. The contractor had temporary power unit with portable toilet located to the front of the house and power was transferred from the house to the temporary power unit. At the completion of repairs, he had power transferred back to the house. On August 5, 2013, the scope of work on the house at that time between Sigura and the insurance company was in agreement in terms of items needed to repair the house and agreed on the cost of all the items except for two. A contract was made between Sigura and me for the items insurance company and Sigura agreed upon. This was for about $53K. The remainder of the work was done by change orders. Subcontractor PW Stevens removed the damaged exterior walls, the drywall inside the house in the same area, and sanded the floor because there was lead from the paint on the outside wall and asbestos in the drywall seams and the floor finish. The contractor installed plastic over the exposed wall framing to keep the house from the elements. He had to repair the plastic a few times since the house was in this state for about four months. There was discussion as to damage to the foundation, the hardwood floor, and damage to the Kitchen and hallway. After some discussion between contractor, insurance company and myself, there was agreement to removal of the hardwood floor in the Dining Room since the contractor showed floor was to thin after the sanding.. With the hardwood floor removed, there was damage to the sub floor. The insurance company allowed removal of the sub floor.. With further inspection, there was foundation damage, and the floor needed to be leveled before rebuilding of the house could begin. With the leveling of the floor and the repair of the foundation, temporary bracing the roof was done so the damaged wall framing and sub floor under the framing could be removed. New sub floor was installed and new wall framing installed in the damaged area. The roof was moved a little over an inch from the accident but was moved back to position as part of this installation. The two new walls had a window replaced on each wall. The north wall had a window replaced with a circuit breaker panel re-installed as part of its wall. The contractor did an excellent job of matching the new exterior wood boards to the existing exterior wall. Also did an excellent job matching the molding around the windows to match the existing window molding. The contractor removed the knob and tube wiring which was the existing electrical wiring and replaced this with romex wiring. He also brought the house to code by adding additional outlets in the rooms. In the damaged area the walls were open (no drywall) and he install the wire and boxes. The rest of the house he had to make holes in the wall to pull-in new cables or pull the cables in from the bottom or crawl space under the floor. In the damaged wall and floor area, the contractor installed insulation before installing the sub floor and drywall. This house had a floor furnace. PG&E inspected the house and found the furnace was bad. I went out and received a bid for the installation of a new forced air heater. I was looking for a second bidder when I went and talked to Sigura. He provided his cost which was lower than the first bid and lowered his bid on the electrical work if I allowed him to do both jobs. At this time, I added some other items that needed to be done before the house was ready for a renter. These items were replace the toilet, install new laminate flooring and baseboards in the kitchen, and fix the foundation in the back of the house. The forced air heater was installed in the attic with vents in each room and the in-take vent with filter in the hallway. The gas line was ½ inch and needed to be changed to ¾ inch gas pipe. Further work was needed in this area since the existing pipe from the meter was bad, they had to change the gas line from the gas meter into the house to the furnace and connect the existing gas pipes to the gas stove and water heater. The contractor installed drywall in the dining room and portions of the living room and kitchen of the house, repaired damaged drywall in the rest of the house from the new wiring, repaired cracks from the accident and existing cracks. The contractor painted the interior of the house Kelly Moore Frost. The contractor painted the exterior of the house where he replaced the outside wall. He matched the color of the exterior of the house perfectly. The contractor installed a laminate floor in the kitchen, removed the hardwood floor in the living room and installed a new hardwood floor in the dining room and living room. The contractor installed a rug in the two bedrooms and hallway. It was very well done. The contractor removed the old dishwasher and replaced it with a new one. We tested the dishwasher and it operates as it should. The contractor removed and replaced the toilet with a new low flow toilet The contractor relocated the coax cable for internet from the hole in the wall to a outlet box in the wall. He also added two additional telephone outlets The contractor installed the blinds in each room. They looked good. The contractor removed the screen door and installed a security door in its place The contractor repaired the rear bedroom door which would not latch, The door opening had to be reduced so that the latch in the door would latch with the opening in the wall. He had to be careful to remove the molding as to not break or damage it. He did a good job Also there were large cracks in the dirt under the house. The contractor filled the cracks with sand to keep the movement of the ground to a minimum. The concrete sidewalk was uneven and caused a trip hazard. The contractor removed and replaced this section of sidewalk and eliminated this hazard. The contractor repaired two sections of the board fence around the front of the yard. A portion was a picket fence and a portion was a good neighbor fence. Except for being new you could not tell the new fence from the old fence.

Overall, we are very pleased with our home remodel. After 19 months and nearly a 1/2 million dollars I believe we are in a good position to evaluate Sigura Construction. We found the owner Ilan Sigura to be very attentive to our concerns and always available - day or night. The project went longer and was more expensive than we had anticipated but this was not related to any fault of the construction company. Some of the sub-contractors were less than responsive but Sigura was always able "to make things right" for us. The quality of the work met if not exceeded our very high standards. Ilan was always willing to correct any problems that came up in the construction and of course in remodeling a 50 year old home - there are always lots of unknowns when starting a construction project. The end result for us - is a beautiful modern home which we couldn't be more pleased with. We would recommend Sigura to friends and family (in fact we already have). In fact if we plan any further construction work we will call Sigura again. We need to give a shout out to Jose - the foreman on our project. Jose attention to detail, excellent workmanship and calm demeanor -really helped make the project a success!

Work began in late October 2012 on a repair project that was supposed to take a week and be done in time for our painters to finish. Upon partial demolition of the front deck, it was discovered there was significantly more damage than originally anticipated. A new contract was obtained to completely demolish and replace the front deck. This work was not completed until mid May 2013, partly due to the rainy season in Dec., Jan., and Feb., and partly due to poor management. The job was mis-managed from the start. The workers were either incompetent or inadequately supervised, and as a result the quality was poor. SLOPPY is the keyword here, especially during painting and preparation. Sigura hired a sub-contractor to do the epoxy pebble coating. When they applied the coating the surface was wet, and the coating was streaked. There were chemical stains everywhere! Chemicals dropped through the deck floor and stained the patio floor below. The flashing was poorly done and incomplete. A new sub-contractor was hired and the work had to be completely re-done. The new sub did a nice job of pebble coating, but he was otherwise sloppy and left many chemical stains on the deck and my carport floor (where materials were stored). The flashing had to be re-done a second time. There were many chemical splashes and paint smears on the side of the house, the deck and the patio below it. All this had to be cleaned up and the paint re-touched. In all fairness, Sigura stood behind their work and eventually made good on all of our many complaints. We ended up with a stronger, better and more attractive deck, but something that should have taken 2 or 3 weeks dragged out to 7 months and a lot of hassle and stress. Sigura DOES have some good, competent workers. I have talked to the owner, Ilan Sigura, and I believe he is honest and cares about his customers. At the time our deck was being built, there was a huge building boom in the Bay Area, and good competent workers are hard to find. And our often dysfunctional school system is not preparing high school graduates either for vocation or college. But sometimes inexperienced workers are sent out on the job, and supervision is often inadequate. Many times we thought workers would show up, but they didn't. A number times a worker would show up after we were told by the company no work would be done that day. WE had to be the workers' foreman much of the time! And sometimes we would be told one thing by a person at Sigura, only to be told something different by another person. If Sigura Construction were better managed and their workers better supervised, it might become a great company.
Description of Work: Demolition and replacement of elevated front deck (about 320 sq.ft.) outside living room, plus repairs to stairway leading up to the deck, plus repairs on another deck outside the master bedroom. Work also included epoxy pebble coat on front deck and stairway, plus sealing and re-painting of all new structure.

I went with this company due to it being a Diamond Certified Company and even though their price was high, I believed I would get a first class job due to it being Diamond Certified. The office was efficient in notifying and letting me know when the job would start. The workmen were on time once the job started but did not clean up and it took 3 phone calls to the company to get someone to come out and remove all the old wood and garbage left behind. The small stucco job was initially a disaster but after complaining and the owner coming out, they did rectify. The wood used was not the same as that taken out, rough as opposed to smooth, and the owner gave me a lecture on different types of wood, etc. and did offer to replace some, but I did not want to go through the tearing out of the beams, noise and hassle again. The back door has never been a perfect fit and the owner agreed that a sharp metal strip from the door pan needed to be trimmed and sent someone out to trim that. A couple of pieces of wood fell off the fence and they came out and fixed that. The metal bracket they put on the front post that meets concrete is flush with the concrete as opposed to raised but to replace it would have meant temporary support of the roof again to replace it and I did not want to go through that again. Overall I was not happy, yes the owner was eventually responsive to my complaints, came out and did offer to replace some of the wood and did rectify the stucco, fence, and metal strip, but overall, I felt their workmanship on my jobs was definitely not first class and the whole experience has left a bad impression on me personally so I personally would not use this company again. My jobs were not major construction remodeling jobs, just a couple of days work, so perhaps their best workmen were not assigned to my small projects and I was just unlucky.
Description of Work: Removed and replaced support beam above external entry, removed and replaced post at entry, removed and replaced wooden trim across front of residence, removed and replaced trim over garage door, window trim at front window, and facia at front and side overhangs, removed and replaced fence with gate construction, replaced back door with installation of door pan plus removed 2 wood kick trims with replacement with stucco.

Sigura constructuon did a big remodeling and expansion project to our Eichler home in Palo Alto. This included adding a room, adding 1 1/2 bathrooms, completely replacing the kitchen, flooring, windows and paint. The team was very professional and dependable and was very easy to work with. They delivered high quality work and exactly on time (which was very important to us since we had to move out of our rental). I highly recommend them

Our experience with Sigura Construction was the most stressful and painful. They did a major remodel in our house including a familyroom addition, bathroom, and kitchen update. Not only did Sigura overcharge and underdeliver, but they were late by months and workmanship was sub-par. He uses cheap and low quality materials but overcharges his clients. Many things were done twice or more times due to lack of supervision. Things started to go bad after Sigura refused to comply with the City of Palo Alto requirements for a gas pipe installation. This delayed the project by 38 days. After that we investigated the other inspections and realized that they were not properly done. When it came to cost his tactics were deceitful. For example, he increased the cost of stucco after we had a written agreement. In the end he forced us to pay him $8,000 more than other contractors just to get the project moving. He left the project with numerous safety issues open like a wrongly installed tankless water heater and electric problems. Also the recessed lights installed in the garage were not fire proof. Sigura never admits mistakes and blames all the wrongs on his clients. He treats his employees horribly. After more than a year that we started our project the City has not approved it yet and has a pending investigation regarding the tankless water heater. We tried mediation and followed all the suggested steps to resolve the open issues, but Sigura failed to comply. The only exception to his work was the kitchen cabinets which were of decent quality. Other than that, the quality of his work and lack of professionalism, despite being Diamond Certified, was thoroughly disappointing. I would NEVER use him again.

Sorry your experience went so badly. I have left you a couple messages, as well as sent you a few emails as soon as I returned to the country. I hope you have a chance to give me a call back to discuss the matter directly. I also had a conversation with my whole team to go over how your project could have been handled more adequate since the beginning to where we could have avoid arriving at this point. But I do have to say that is very disappointing and hurtful to be accuse of treating my employees horribly which is not the situation, I'm a family man and a human being and I would never treat another person the way I don't want to be treated! Sigura is one of two companies we contacted for this job after having found them in the Diamond Business Directory. I have to give them a mixed review: The quality of the work they did was very good, but project supervision was poor and there were some issues with pricing. Their estimator came promptly and did an excellent job explaining the cause of the problem and what had to be done to repair it. I was impressed, so I went with them despite their estimate being higher than the competition's (approximately $10,000 vs $8,000). Communication over the contract was good, they agreed to the changes I requested and started work on time. When they cleared away the damaged inner wall, it turned out the damage to the outer wall was worse than expected, which of course required a change order. That's when trouble started. First they overestimated the wall area that had to be re-stuccoed by 30%. When I pointed that out and asked for a proportional reduction in cost of the change order, they fudged it, for instance adding a $400 charge to clear a few feet of vine that was hanging over the wall area. In the end I agreed to an amount for the change order that I felt was not justified, just to get work to resume. Per above, the quality of the work was good. But there were problems with supervision/coordination: the tilers tiled over the fixture connections, so the next crew has to break tile to be able to put them back on, and Sigura called the job "complete" without having put the shower doors back into place! In the end they fixed everything, I'm very satisfied with the bathroom, and while I feel I was overcharged on the change orders, the total is still within reason. Those are the most important things, which is why I wouldn't give them a bad review. However there were enough problems along the way that I would not use them again.
