He's probably is in his early 30's and he just got his general contractor's license. He's awesome and an amazing young man. Our house is a very old house and was built in 1905. He stripped the whole house and used scaffolding which I think he paid like $2,000 to get it up. It impressed me that he used the scaffolding just to be safe. He fixed whatever needed to be fixed and then he painted. He came and gave us a color chart from the period when the house was built just to see what kind of color combinations they would use. We went around ourselves in the neighborhood and looked at color combinations. He painted a different color combination on a little part on the front of the house just to see. We discarded the first color combination immediately. He tried some other combinations. He had us look at it in the morning with the sun on it and in the evening when there was no sun on it because the colors changed, but all of that just impressed me immensely. He took a little longer than he anticipated, so I told him that I didn't want him to work when he quoted us a certain amount and now you probably need some more money. He told me not to worry and said that he could pay his guys. He had an apprentice and an older guy with him who really was a knowledgeable guy. I think he's still using him as a mentor. He said that this was his masterpiece and what he was going to put on his website. It's not a Victorian house, but a little younger and he has never done a house like that. He was very pleased with the outcome. He was so thorough and the windows weren't smeared afterwards. Whenever they were smeared he just wiped it off and I was just very, very, pleased with him. He's very congenial and very friendly. He totally sits down with you and talks to you. He gives you information and hears what you say and what you want, but then he also comes up with his own suggestions. One side of our house is always more vulnerable than the other because the sun blasts onto it all day long. The first painting job that we had was awful and just started flaking up immediately within the next two years. He used this kind of paint that he thought would withstand the sunshine more so than the other paint. Our daughter's husband recommended him, so we thought we'd try him and we were just utterly pleased with him. We thought he was a really good painter and that he obviously knows other things too. I think the price was worth it because we wanted it done nicely and to last. He wanted to come back the following year and check up on some of the painting jobs that he did like the back porch, but he didn't have time. When I give him a call he always calls me back immediately although when he said he would check up on things he didn't, but I don't think I could hold that against him because his business probably picked up and it's just him and his partner.
Description of Work: Joel Gruber of Gruber Painting painted the exterior of our house. He also put a new roof on our little apartment because it was leaking. He also fixed the ceiling inside because there was water in it and they had to take it all apart. He covered everything up so it wouldn't go into the rest of the apartment. He not only fixed the ceiling and painted it, but he painted the whole kitchen area where this occurred without asking us and charging us more.
