I contacted Sean about a kitchen remodel, and we emailed back and forth a few times. Though he was flexible about scheduling, he sent me the following email: "We were able to come up with a pretty rough estimate just based on the PDF drawing you E-mailed over however we would just like to make sure that the job will fit within a pre-set budget that you might have. The reason I say this is because many of our recent craigslist leads have been customers looking to do a full house interior and exterior remodel with new roofs and landscape done and they were looking to do all this with 35k which just simply isn't realistic. So at your convenience let us know if anytime during the week next week works for us to schedule to meet and also if you have a budget set for this remodel that we can work within." After explaining that I have hired out similar work in the past, and even done a lot of the work myself before, I asked for his labor estimate. The estimate came in at $19k for what I thought should run ~$10k-12k. Since that was outside of my budget, I asked if he could break down some of the costs, since likely 1 or 2 items were blowing out the budget, and I could either do it myself, or use some subcons I've worked with in the past. In response, I got the following nasty email: "As you are saying, 19k is out of your budget. Good luck with your remodel. I don't have time to do line item breakdowns for you to know what to pay your subs to do the work. I am in business for myself, not to bring business to other contractors. Good day" I understand that everyone needs to make money, but I wouldn't hire a contractor that's not flexible enough to work with me, (the homeowner), in controlling costs and balancing that with his business needs. His last email highlighted his true colors since he couldn't just say "no thank you".
