Description of Work: Remodeled master and second full bath. Also performed other non-related handy-man type services during project. Troy and Terrance are great guys and highly skilled. Super easy to work with and highly ethical. Would not accept payment until work was completed.

Pros: Troy offered helpful design suggestions for the tile layout in both the kitchen and bathroom, and the end result is wonderful. He coordinated well with the general contractor and other subcontractors, even having to remove and reinstall tile in the bathroom when the general contractor mistakenly had the shower pan installed too early. Cons: He didn't seal the tile, which even he found odd, because the general contractor asked him not to. (True, it wasn't part of the contract, but one would think a quick change order could be offered.) He also never got around to applying the grouted caulk around the kitchen tile. We suspect that the general contractor told him not to bother since we already paid for the tile work portion of the contract; still, that made us feel that that was somewhat unprofessional to leave something incomplete (however minor).
Description of Work: California Fashion Tile was a subcontractor who installed the bathroom floor tile and the kitchen backsplash tile during a major renovation project. Both the owner, Troy Troutman, and his assistant Miguel did the work.

Response from CALIFORNIA FASHION TILE
Member, i did give a bid to seal and caulk your tiles, and was told no per ron,and that they would do it themselves. i cant give you a price dirrectly,as it violates my contract with ricky.and i cant work for free either. as it was i didnt get paid in full for your project by ricky untill 4 months after i did the installs,so im guessing you paid ricky,up front and he didnt pay us untill way latter.and trust me my bid to ricky was not 5k it was less than 2k. i thought we did a good job for you,we showed up when we were told to,we fixed the tile when they had to re-do the pan.(they accepted the price to replace the floor tiles where needed then didnt pay us for the repair)we cleaned up the other trades mess, when we cleaned ours. im sorry if you felt like you didnt get what you paid for,and hopefully you have a better understanding,as to what really happened now. you can always contact me directly at 408-893-6170 troy

Troy and his crew were prompt and efficient. The bid was very competitive and Troy broke it into components because I wanted to do some of the work myself. I learned a lot from them (mainly that this is way too hard to do yourself, especially if you want it done right). I designed the pattern and they helped me figure out the details where needed. The design required a number of detail cuts and small pieces which they executed really well. Troy was helpful in making sure I got the best price on the materials I bought and he picked everything up and brought it to the job site. It turned out great. I recently had Troy do another job tiling the laundry room floor. Since we were changing the hardwood floor next to the bathroom he had done two years before he broke out some tile at the doorway and replaced it with new tile cut to fit the new configuration - for no charge. He also gave me a 10% repeat customer discount on the new work. He also gave me a bid on laying some limestone tile on the outside front porch and steps at a reasonable rate and I plan to use him again.

The tile turned out wonderful! 3/4 of the way through my kitchen, the color changed on the tiles and the lot numbers were the same. They ripped it all out and installed all new. The company we purchased the tiles from had instructed California Fashion Tile to leave the job, but they kept going and took care of the problems.

We did not end up going with California Fashion Tile because of the price. It was affordable, but we found one other company to go with. But I would not hesitate to call them again for another job.
Description of Work: Troy Troutman came out to give us an estimate for a shower demolition and tiling project. He was on time and very responsive to phone calls and e-mails. He gave us an estimate for the project. He spent a lot of time talking with me about options and was very helpful.

I think structurally, the work is sound. Where Troy faulted was in the details. He did not supervise his workers adequately-one of whom was a bull in a china closet. The surrounding floor was not adequately protected. I had to ask 3 times to have a new cabinet protected. An adjacent closet carpet floor was trashed completely(Troy replaced with cedar flooring at no charge). The new paint on walls was trashed, to the point of needing repainting. Grout lines are not uniform - they range in size from none to 1/2 inch. No spacers were used. Corners on bench were chipped off, grout left in closet door tract. The bathroom tile flooring is not level.. there are tiles that are poking up as much as 1/2 inch. Troy had to do the recessed shelf twice because he didn't measure correctly. Responsiveness on the phone was random. The whole job took 6 weeks and it should have been shorter. Troy also re-set tile that popped during the earthquake at no charge. I have more than the 4 pictures.
Description of Work: Demo and installation of tile in a shower stall and bathroom floor. This included a recessed shelf and a bench. He and his workers also moved plumbing, reinstalled toilet fixtures and shower fixtures.

Response from CALIFORNIA FASHION TILE
i guess ill respond to each item in the order she listed. i was on site evey day until i was injured and had to be put in a cast,i finnished her job in a cast. we put down carpet runners everyday, she wasnt happy that 3" of carpet was showing out side the tarped area.there was no damage done to the carpet in or out the tarped work areas. we didnt cover the cabinet untill we started working in the room it was installed in,once we started working in that room we covered it. one of my guys spilled grout on the carpet in the closet,i replaced the carpet with cedar the next day. i taped plastic to the walls to protect the paint, when we removed the tape it pulled the paint off,as the painter didnt prime the walls prior to painting them,i told the client prior to starting the job, to have the painter come in last, she chose not to listen. we made the grout lines as small as possibble, before the tile was installed,i showed the client the tiles she chose and noted to her, that they were not consistant in size,i let her know that we would have to make up any differences in the grout joints.witch she agrreed to,if there is any grout joint larger than 1/8" i will give her back every dime she paid me. there are no corners chipped on the bench, thats the end of the tile, and that little corner thats missing is less than 1/8"x1/8" of an inch, and we showed her that before we installed it. there was no grout left in the door tract as it was installed after the tile was completed. the tile floor was flat and tiles set on plane,we had an earthquake right after the job was done, the floor is upstairs and a large beam runs through under the floor thats where the tiles poped.witch we replaced for the client at no charge. had i seen this report from her i would not have done that work for free. i brought the client in to the bath room prior to the recess niche being built, and showed her the size and location of it,and built it and tiled it,with her approval, when she tried to put a large bottle in it,it didnt fit the opening and she wanted it redone, witch i did at no cost to the client, because it was an honest mistake on her part. the job did not take 6 weeks to complete it took 7 working days, the client is counting the repairs done to correct the damage done by the earth quake and has admitted that to me. we sealed the grout twice in the shower area, the client only sealed the grout on the floor after the repair was done. the client says we trashed areas out side of our work area, yet no pictures posted or bills sent to me to pay for any damages done by me or my agents. the client says the grout joint varies from zero to 1/2" yet the pictures she posted do not show that ,as it is not true,as i stated before if there is any grout joints in the shower area bigger than 1/16" to 1/8" i will give the client every dime of her money back. we paded and protected all the flooring in the clients home in our work areas,i vacumed and swept the carpet and tile areas every day at the end of our work days,as well as washing down the outside walkways and driveway, every day. most of the clients i work with are happy with myself and my crew as well as the quality of our work, and that shows in all of my internet reviews,as we dont get a chek or a payment untill the client is happy and satisfied with their project,we dont take deposits to start any job,nor do we collect progress payments,we are paid upon completion, and if this client wasnt happy with me or my company why did she pay me in full? up untill i read her post i thought she was happy with the work done,i guess i was wrong.i know you get a client once in a while whos hard to please, and in the 25 years ive been doing this line of work theres been a few,im not perfect but ive always been able to have the client happy before they pay me and the job is done.maybe thats why this bothered me so much.so read the rest of the reviews and look us up on other rating sites and you will see that this is the only complaint we have. troy

The owner came to give me an estimate and a couple of weeks later he sent his two employees who were very good at what they do. They had to remove the old grout (which someone had done a bad job on) and redo the two bathrooms. It took a couple of days of long hours and they even came back to do some touch up work when I called. They did not ignore my calls when I wanted the touch up work done.

We had no idea who to contact for tile work, so we checked Angie's List, and found Troy Troutman. Troy Troutman of California Fashion Tile was upfront about the job, pricing, and scheduling. He was a true professional, and went above and beyond to get the job done. Troy was always here when he said he would be, and on time. He is a perfectionist, and this is reflected in the quality of his workmanship. He was accomodating of minor changes in tile layout. We will definitely recommend Troy to friends and family, and would certainly hire him for any future tile work. One of the best, if not the best, experiences that we have ever had with a contractor.
Description of Work: Troy Troutman tore out existing tile in a 5'x3'x7' shower, the outside bathroom floor, and another bathroom floor. He then installed all new tile in these areas. The work was completed through grouting and re-installing toilets. Included in Troy's price was the tile that we selected (up to a certain price), and Troy picked it up at the tile shop.
