Services we offer
We specialize in kitchen and bathroom remodeling from planning to completion. We also offer comprehensive cabinet design and installation services.
This is big project, we replaced all the old cabinet, changed the cook top's position, changed all the appliances. AKB did a good job. The owner Johans is very nice and responsive. Designer Fred finished a good design. David and others did a good and detail work. The total project finished in seven weeks. They tried very hard to reduce the impact to our daily life, they cleaned up after work. They even rent a mobile toilet for their contractor. They are very flexible about our new requests, which is good. We are very happy with the overall quality and service.
Description of Work: We used AKB to remodel our ketchen and bathroom, include change the hardware floor.

They tore out the floor under the shower and the shower itself, replaced the subfloor, the shower pan, and cultured marble shower walls, took up the old vinyl floor and put down a stone floor, added stone base boards, installed shower fixtures and a grab bar, installed a new toilet, repainted the room, installed a shower door, and added a grab bar beside the toilet.
Description of Work: AKB replaced the subfloor of my bathroom (severe water damage), replaced my entire shower and the bathroom floor with excellent materials, painted the room, installed a new toilet, and added grab bars inside and outside the shower. The crew of workers was the most skillful that had ever come into my home. Their manner was unfailingly courteous, and their work was impeccable. The foreman of the crew was exceptionally helpful, answered every concern, and even gave his time to look at home problems that his company didn't deal with.
Working with AKB was a great experience from the beginning. Michele guided us through the process of figuring out what changes to make to our old kitchen layout to make the space more practical. Michele is a whiz at the product lines (cabinets, sinks, countertop materials, hardware, flooring, etc.) that AKB offers and quickly helped us navigate the numerous choices we had to making all these selections. The design, selection and ordering process went very quickly, and we were excited at the prospect of getting a new kitchen so soon. Once work began on the kitchen, Dave took charge of overseeing the job. Dave was efficient at managing all the pieces and people needed to demolish and install the new kitchen. The team working onsite were generally prompt and worked hard to get the job done in a timely fashion. Communication between Dave and the onsite team seemed to be pretty tight, which was important to reduce the chance for mistakes and instill confidence in us that the team knew what we had discussed with Dave. Almost all the staff and subcontractors who worked on site were friendly and exhibited a good level of professionalism (casual background conversation from one or two people while working could have been cleaner). Professionalism of the customer-facing staff was grade "A." The job overall went very well, but it's impossible for all projects to be completely problem free. Our project had a small hiccup with our countertop. The details of the problem are not as important as the response from AKB and Johans when the problem came up. It took a couple of tries to fix the issue to our satisfaction, but during the process Johans focused on ensuring that we were truly satisfied with the resolution of the problem. Johans' sincerity at wanting us to be happy with their work really stood out as exceptional. Taking on a remodeling project can be overwhelming. There are plenty of horror stories to discourage anyone from hiring a contractor and investing a good chunk of money with them. AKB has earned our trust with this project and we would recommend them to our friends and family.
Description of Work: • Measure and design new kitchen layout, including placement of cabinets, appliances, and garden window • Provide advice on cabinetry, countertops and hardware finishes • Manage ordering of cabinets, flooring, kitchen hardware • Demo and haul of old kitchen • Install new drywall, recessed lighting, plumbing, insulation, flooring, cabinets, appliances, countertops, garden window • Interior and exterior paint

Overall the process was very smooth. My daughter bought a condo in late summer and because of a pipe leak in the wall next to the kitchen cabinets had to be replaced. Also, my daughter was looking to upgrade her bathroom. The employees were professional, on time, and returned phone calls/emails promptly. They had estimated that the process would take 2 1/2 weeks and they finished right at the 2 1/2 week mark. The company and its employees were very detailed and knowledgeable.
Description of Work: The services preformed o included the installation of: kitchen cabinets, granite, solid surface in tub area, tile floor, and bathroom vanity.

The entire experience with this company was very positive. Our bathroom remodel was a relatively small job, but they didn't act as though we weren't worth their time and they gave us a real bid rather than one that was outrageously high. Michelle guided us through the process of picking out all the necessary materials. The expectations of the project were set very explicitly by Michelle and Dave. As we picked out materials, we signed off on every dollar that exceeded the original bid. They explained why the materials we picked were more expensive than they had originally budgeted for, so there was no misunderstandings. The work began very quickly after we signed off on the plans. The employees of American Kitchen & Bathrooms by Hans are amazingly punctual. They always showed up on the job by 8:00 AM and began working as soon as they arrived. At no point during this remodel was there any lag time- there was always someone working on something. Monday through Friday from 8:00 to 5:00. This kind of professionalism is surprisingly rare among contractors. They asked us if they could work over the weekend and made sure we always understood what was going on. Everyone we worked with was professional, polite, and good at their job. Remodeling is always messy, but they made an effort to keep things as clean as possible. We are very happy with the quality of the work and our bathroom looks great. The thing that impressed me the most happened very early on in the project- we met the owner (Hans?) and he was very gracious and asked how everything was going. At this point, we'd just finished picking out tiles and sinks. We told him that everything was going great. His response was perfect "That's good, but we want to make sure you're still happy when we're done." That made me realize that this company understood customers. In my past experience with remodel jobs, I'm anxious for my relationship with the contractor to be done and I never want to see them again. These guys did everything right.
Description of Work: American Kitchen and Bathrooms by Hans completed a remodel of our small bathroom. They replaced the existing bathtub and tile with a new shower and replaced a pedestal sink with a vanity. The work included re-plumbing the shower, hot mopping the shower pan, changing the location of the drain, a little drywall and painting work, and installing a custom shower door.

Once the proposals were signed and finishes selected the work began. The demo was basically done in a few days time which was fine because the cabinetry was ordered and they synced up the arrival time of cabinets/installation so it woudl be minimal time down. The installation started with our kitchen. Cabinets went in and then they did the other cabinet installs in both master and guest baths. There was then some down time for counters to come. In the meantime, we worked with Michele for the 'fun stuff' to come in. We worked with an outside vendor for all of the kitchen appliances but AKB did the actual installation fo all cabinets, fixtures, lighting, painting (we had an outside contractor do that part), and tile work. The overall process was about 6 or 7 weeks start to finish. We had to also work around our hardwood flooring and carpet installation - all of which was coordindated through Michele.
Description of Work: We did a complete remodel (gut job) of our house from top to bottom and where AKB played their role was in our kitchen, master bath, guest bathroom, and 1/2 bath as well as they managed the retile of our foyer. The process started with an initial consultation with Michele (sales/designer) in their San Jose showroom. Michele then did a rendering and proposal for the work. This was followed by her site visit to do measurements. The actual work was done with David and his team.

Michele, the lead designer and sales representative, helped us to articulate what we wanted to do in our living room and kitchen then came up with a workable computerized design. We liked the way in which Michele showed us the design before the project began. After meeting with her we were then able to change any of the details on her design to our satisfaction. She helped us to choose the right cabinets, granite, tile, flooring, and other needed materials while making sure we stayed within budget. The project manager and lead contractor Dave, and his most able staff, implemented our remodeling project in a timely and proficient manner. Michele and Dave always returned our phone calls promptly and answered all our questions no matter how small they were. We have nothing but high praise for the entire team at American Kitchen and Bath. Thanks to all of them, we now have a beautiful new kitchen and living room that we can be proud of.
Description of Work: Our kitchen was totally remodeled. All new granite counters were installed as well as solid maple cabinets. Recessed lighting and under-cabinet LED lighting were installed. A limestone subway tile backsplash was added. Engineered acacia hardwood flooring was installed replacing our old linoleum flooring. They also installed recessed lighting in the living room. The entryway in the living room was redesigned as well. Both the living room and hallway also had engineered acacia hardwood floors installed. The kitchen, hallway and living room were totally repainted. All new appliances/plumbing were purchased separately by us and installed by the work crews. They also handled all the electrical and plumbing.

We are sorry you felt that way. Sorry, bur a large kitchen remodel does not come cheap. The other contractors mentioned are both quality outfits with pricing similar to us, if not higher. Our proposal included all building permit upgrades and decent product allowances. That's why you should get 3 proposal and decide who, and who's pricing you like best. Sorry we could not help you and best of luck.

July 2012: On Friday Hans, the owner of American Kitchen & Bath, came out to my home himself because the office was very busy and he was the only one available so he filled in for my "design appt." I showed him the kitchen/dining/sitting area to be remodeled and he immediately began measuring. I had not even raised the issues of moving a wall, replacing window and door, possibly installing an island or peninsula- all of which I hoped to get some advice, or at least feedback on. Hans was very polite and business-like but he had no questions for me and I had to interrupt his measuring to explain what I wanted from the project. I had to repeatedly ask very specific questions to get any information about their cabinets... There was no response regarding the design of a peninsula or island. He was very much in a hurry to measure and leave. Hans said that my project was different from the kind of work they usually do, which is a simple update with new cabinets in kitchens and baths in Santa Clara Valley. Apparently, such kitchens/baths are pretty much a formula estimate as they are all pretty much the same. I live in Santa Cruz mountains and not a tract house. I would not hire this company for a remodel. Hans emailed the estimate on Monday, as he promised. The estimate was very general, does not include specs on materials, which is reasonable since it is based on the concept and measurements, but not construction drawings. Since I have done my homework, researched the pros and cons and prices of various materials, I know that the allowances he made for window, door, tile, granite and flooring are very, very low, even if he is passing on a contractor discount. An accurate estimate would be considerably higher with my choice of materials. It may be common practice to quote a low end job and then the cost goes up when the customer chooses higher quality. In summary, It was quite obvious that Hans was not interested in the job. I wish he had simply told me that he was not interested. Both he and I would have been happier. I would would recommend getting an estimate from this company ONLY under the following circumstances:You live in a tract type house w/ standard kitchen/bathYou just want to update or freshen the look for cosmetic reasons or for saleNo new construction, remodel or structure changesYou are knowledgeable about the real prices of materials you wish to use

I am not about to waste my day trying to respond to your long list of complaints. I do not appreciate you trying to trash my name and reputation. So, let me get this straight. I spend 2 1/2 hours driving to your place in the middle of nowhere, look at all our options and discuss the design, I than spent another 3 hours providing a detailed proposal and a drawing of what I thought would look nice. And you give us a D. I am sorry if you take offense that I, the owner himself stopped by. I have done 75% of all the proposals and designs that AKB has done in the last 30 years. I am also sorry that you thought you were getting a design appointment. We normally have a meeting and discuss pricing and designs, and then we do a free estimate, or a design agreement. My designer signed several contracts and customers take priority over estimates. Also, I do not feel comfortable to have her drive to an unknown location, in the middle of nowhere. We are always interested in doing the work. However, numerous things went through my head on this visit. The additional travel times for my crew, the narrow roads, and how do I get our trucks and trailer up those roads? The project would be in the $60”K range. Your $35K butget was not going to get close to it. The allowances used in our proposals are realistic, and based on quality American Made products and fair pricing. Our allowances are based on Merillat, Starmark, or Chrystal cabinetry, Milgard doors and windows, Toto toilet, and $800 for a kitchen sink, faucet and disposal. Yes, we have higher quality products available, but I did not use those allowances because of your low budget. A lot of contractors use Chinese products that are a lot cheaper, we don’t. Besides tract homes, we work on Custom homes, Eichlers, Victorians and Condo’s. Your home has exposed beams. The problem is that your ceiling boards are the upstairs floor boards. No, we cannot do recessed lights or hide the wires unless you have ceiling joist and a sheet rock ceiling. Please, say bad things about people that do bad things. If you were not impressed by my visit contact others. It never hurts to get more opinions. But to trash us like this is downright mean. Did one of our competitors ask you to do this. We have had this happen several times before because they envy us for the quality operation we are. Best of luck.

I was very disappointed to read this review. We spent a couple hours making up drawings in our software program as well as a bid for the work desired. The bid was emailed a couple days following the receipt of his drawings. The bid is probably in his junk mail folder. If he had only called us to let us know that the estimate was not received we could have made sure all his contact information was correct and that he received the bid. We would have loved the opportunity to work with him.

They were unique. We had interviewed a number of reface individuals and we were not able to find anybody that was doing a quarter inch facing but these people do three quarter inch. We did solid cherry for all the cabinets reface and of course all the doors, drawers, and pullouts. The drawers are dovetails, solid maple and so were the pullouts. We had them redo some sections because we were doing a little redesign. It looks brand new. They are beautiful. They took a bit longer than expected that would be my only complaint. It took them five weeks. They only had one person in the end and he was doing such precision work that we didn’t complain at all, it was worth it. I looked for years before I picked them and I had found nothing like them at all. It was a large kitchen, there were three small sections that were new and that were redesigned, and the rest were refaced. So it was a combination work.

When I first met with Michele (sales/design), she was professional and friendly and quick to catch on to my vision for a kitchen that would be a little out of the ordinary with open shelving and a unique countertop choice. She assisted me several times along the way, researched the countertops I wanted, and guided me in areas where I was unsure of what choice to make . Dave the project manager, told us he liked to "run a tight ship" and that he did. Dave also was very professional and was clearly invested in doing an excellent job. He stayed in good touch and always answered or returned calls quickly. He did a great job of coming up with a creative solution to re-routing two unexpected pipes. The re-routing involved an additional cost but Dave clearly explained why and exactly what the amount would be. His team of plumbers, electricians, drywaller/painter, tile installer, appliance installer and floor installer were all efficent, skilled and pleasant to have around. They were always able to get ahold of Dave when a question arose and mostly did a good job of cleaning up. We were pleased with all work done and the quality was excellent..The project was estimated to take a month and went over that by only a day or two. In the end we got the kitchen we wanted and will definitely turn to American Kitchen and Bath for a bathroom remodel we hope to do next year. We highly recommend them.

We had brought AKB, along with 5 other contractors to bid on repairing and continuing a disaster of a remodelling job with a previous contractor that we let go after losing a substantial sum of money. Of the 6, the top 2 on our list were both highly rated contractors on Angie's list. We went with AKB because their long history in this line of work demonstrating quality, timeliness and price. They did not dissapoint. AKB did an excellent job. My wife and I could not be happier with their work. They really care about their workmanship. Many final changes of the completed job were not discovered by us but by them. Things that looked fine to us were not perfect to them and they made the changes at no charge ofcourse. During the first three weeks, they found multiple serious structural and electrical issues caused by the previous contractor. All were repaired at no additional cost. As far as timeliness, they managed to be within a week of the their target quoted schedule despite some curve balls we gave them in design changes, delays on our side in deciding on material, and new requested add-ons. On our add-ons, they proposed ways how it can be done with no added cost to us which was a very pleasant surprise. In terms of cost and schedule, it does not get any better than this. When they were done, not only did they clean the site, they also, without us asking, brought in our furniture back into the house from the garage and helped organize the garage so that my wife and 2 year old can use it to park the car instead of being in the driveway.
Description of Work: Kitchen remodel Remodel of 2 bathroom Entire main floor marble tiling Entire first floor wall texture and paint Exterior stucco repair and paint Repair of damage done by previous contractor
We as homeowners wanted to remodel our kitchen but we had no idea where to begin. We had tried doing business with "BBB" amd Diamond Certified companies but found out that they were like any other company... you really did not know what you are getting. Then we decided to give Angie's List a try. We got a pool of about five companies to give us a estimate. All were very good and pleasant to deal with. But one company stood out. American Kitchen and Bath. From the very first day, Hans made us feel very comfortable with what we were getting into. We met at his office where we met their designer, Julie, who made a fabulous floor plan for us. We also met John,(project manager)who is also very nice. At the office, everyone are very friendly and cordial. As this was new to us, they wanted to make sure we were comfortable. Everything that was needed to be done was put on paper and was very detailed. If something needed to be done, they were sure to tell us before hand. They were no surprises to us. Everything to us was presented in a upfront way. If we had any questions or changes, and we had many, Hans and the rest of the AKB team would take the time out to answer them. Hans is a great communicator and very easy to get in touch with. He usually gave us a prompt call back anytime we needed to get in touch with him. The project took about 2 months to complete. The whole AKB "Team" is superb. Each worker was skilled in their own field. Plumbing, hardwood floor installation, baseboard installation, carpet installation, electrical work, etc.. Although they were many on the team, and they were all good, a special shout out for John, Ron, Rene, and Jim Mayo, the electrician. They were awesome In business, I believe, it starts from the top. Hans is at the top and he made sure everything was done professionally and we as customers were happy. I would use AKB again and again and would recommend them to anyone. Thanks AKB
Description of Work: We had originally wanted to do only a Kitchen Remodel but ended up doing much more. AKB moved our Kitchen to another area in the house and remodeled the rest of the house. We had windows and french doors replaced. We had acoustic ceilings removed, hardwood floors refinished, recessed lights were put throughout the house. We also had the interior of our house painted with multiple colors.

They did a professional job at a very competitive price. They were pretty good. I would recommend them to others. I would use them again in the future only for my bathrooms or something.
Description of Work: I used American Kitchen and Bath-Bathrooms by Hans to install cabinets and countertops in my kitchen. The kitchen sink was under-mount attached. They also did some wall plastering, installed the plumbing, oven, and installed a garbage disposal. They did a great job with floating out the plastering on my ceiling and the price was very good. There were some minor issues with the installation. One was they installed the base cabinets, oven and refrigerator without removing the protective paper on the hardwood floors first. It was a bit of hassle to take the paper off after the fact. They did a good job with installing the plumbing and did some fixes for free. Overall, the kitchen looks great. They did a great job with the crown molding and the cabinets look amazing. There was an issue with the granite counter-top installation. The plywood upper they installed was not level so the granite installers had a hard time getting the granite to be level. The people who measure the template did not do a very good job, and the installers spent hours grinding down the granite to get it to fit. Also the seams between the two slabs of granite over the sink are not flush. Usually a granite installer, will use a razor blade to make sure the two pieces of flush. This is not the case and you can feel the difference. They also used a poor choice in color for the epoxy and it stands out. The sub contractors were from Oakland and they hit severe traffic on the day of installation. The guys stayed till almost midnight and were in a little bit of a rush to go home. Plus, they never came back out to seal the granite.

Extremely well. They are honest, experienced, punctuate, and extremely responsive. From the time they start ripping out the old kitchen to the day when I can cook in my new beautiful kitchen, it is 3 weeks. Yes, 3 weeks! They did exactly what they said they were going to do in exactly the amount of time within the budget. Their estimate was a little higher than another place, also highly rated in the Angie's list, but in the end we decided to go with AKB because they provided us with two designs like we requested and felt he understood our needs better. Their owner Johan is very experienced and patient with us. He always returns our email or call within hours, most time in less than an hour. The project manager John manages the project like "Project Management 101". Every morning he would come (or call if he needed to be at another site) to let me know what they were going to do that day. At the end of the day, he would let me know what they did that day and what they were going to do the next day. John also save the growth chart paper on the wall when they removed the old kitchen. Their on site crew lead Ron was experienced and hard working. And the designer Julie was efficient, and extremely patient with me when I couldn't make up my mind about color and style. The different parts of the company worked smoothly together. I was so happy with them that we also asked them to remove the popcorn ceiling (with extra reasonable cost which is not part of the kitchen remodel) and repaint the entire house. There were a few scratches and dents in the bedroom hardwood floor, we let Johan know, and he replaced them without problem. I had waited for 10 years to finally have the courage to do a remodeling. American Kitchen and Bath, Johan, John and their entire team made it a pleasant and stress free experience.
