We specialize in kitchen and bathroom remodeling from planning to completion. We also offer comprehensive cabinet design and installation services.
We're very happy with the quality and look of our Starmark cabinets. We also had a pleasant experience working with AKB and Johans. They offered us a great price and design and were very responsive to our concerns. One cabinet was too large (due to a bad measurement) and could not be installed. AKB paid for a new cabinet of the correct size and rushed the delivery. Our contractor installed it, but it turns out the manufacturer (Starmark) had sent a cabinet with the wrong doors. AKB again worked with Starmark to get the correct cabinet and rushed the delivery. AKB also took care of the installation of this last cabinet since our general contractor had pretty much finished our remodel at that point.
Description of Work: This review covers a Starmark cabinetry order only (kitchen and 2 bathrooms). AKB did not do the installation of the cabinets, except for a single cabinet because of a special circumstance.

We hired American Kitchen & Bath a few years ago to remodel our guest bathroom. We were pleased with the results so we decided to use them again to design and install a new kitchen. Michele listened to our ideas and created a new design that is much more efficient using the existing space. She also guided us through the decision making process to select the best materials within our budget to create a beautiful kitchen of which we are proud. All of the crew working on the project were professional and courteous. They were receptive to any minor concerns we had and worked to satisfy. Any issues that arose, such as discovery of a scratched back splash tile, were promptly addressed once we notified Johans. The tile was replaced the next day. The work was completed within the time estimated. The project required replacing the old kitchen top to bottom and installing a new out door electrical circuit breaker panel to upgrade power delivery by PG&E. A big thank you to the American Kitchen & Bath crew, electricians, office staff, Dominique, Michele and Johans for a wonderful new kitchen we will enjoy for years to come.

Any remodel can be stressful, however, it wasn't due to AKB. There was water damage that was not detected until the entire bathroom was gutted. Our bathroom took about a month to complete. When there was any issues that came up, I would call the owner/office and they would accomodate my requests. I would definitely use them again for future remodels.

The job went very smoothly and we are extremely pleased with the results. The job started on July 5 and ended on July 29, right on target. The workmen were very considerate and very skilled. I compared the tiling work on our tub/shower to work I had done years ago on another house and was very impressed with the technique they used for our old house - plaster, chicken wire, plaster, tile etc. Moving the door was not easy, but they put a new header etc and it works well (sliding doors require careful balancing!). As usual, there were tiny bumps, like finding out the rough in for the oldest toilet was 14-15 inches from the wall instead of the current standard 12 inches. They knew how to solve the problem with a particular model of Toto toilet that works with these older rough-ins that aren't standard distance from the wall. I wanted a company that specialized in bathrooms because I knew with a 1920 house, it was important to have a company that knew how to handle unexpected challenges. I have a third bathroom that I will have done in the next year or so and will definitely consider American Kitchen and Bath when I get ready to do it. The price was right in line with other bids, neither the highest or the lowest, but pretty much around what I expected. George and MIchele were terrific to work with. Michele knew immediately what we wanted to achieve and George has high standards for the work product, which is something I really valued.
Description of Work: We had two bathrooms remodeled, one complete master bath remodel and the other a partial on the hall bath with new flooring, toilet, countertop and fixtures. The full remodel was new floor, countertop, fixtures, retiling the shower walls over tub, toilet, new fixtures, and moving the door to middle replacing it with a sliding door instead of a hinged door that opened into the bedroom. We kept cabinets in both bathrooms as they were in good condition.

I have such mixed feelings about this review. I chose AKB after researching the company online (including the great reviews here-- though in retrospect none were very recent) and meeting with their designer, Michele. I really felt like I had made the right choice when I signed the contract, which was for a job estimated at 3-4 weeks for my very small bathroom. The good news is that there are several outstanding people that participated in the project, including Michele (the designer-- great ideas and easy to work with), Dominique (scheduler and shoulder to cry on) and the carpenter who did much of the work, George (really knowledgeable and skilled). I would not hesitate to recommend any of them--all went above and beyond on my project. And I am very happy with the final result. But the process left A LOT to be desired. My 3-4 week project ended up taking 9 weeks with AKB, and that was without installation of the shower glass which I had to hire out separately because the AKB glass contractor said he couldn't do the job as originally planned. Total time until I could use the completed bathroom was nearly 12 weeks by the time the glass was installed and set. About a week total delay was accounted for due to some minimal termite damage that needed repair, and a delay in the rough-in permit appointment. I am not new to remodeling, and in fact, I had this same bathroom completely remodeled previously. I know delays occur with change orders and when supplies are not in place. I had all materials selected and purchased prior to when the the bathroom was demo'd. When AKB showed up, I was introduced to the foreman and two workman and told they would be on the job until completion. This plan quickly fell apart. The company seemed in chaos. Two foreman came and went from the time I started the design work until completion of the project, and I heard that several tile people had quit too. There were other problems with people out sick, etc. But mostly it became evident that there were too many jobs for the workers to focus on any one. One result was that no one was supervising specific work. My shower was tiled nearly completely when it was discovered that it didn't meet code for the door opening. It had to be modified and partially re-tiled two more times to get it to a place where I liked the result and the doorway was large enough. To the company's credit, they never tried to blame the errors on me, nor did they charge me to fix any of them. They told me they would do whatever it took to make me happy. And as a customer, that is probably most important when doing a remodel. But the whole experience, especially the many days when no one showed up to work because they were at other jobs (at least 2 of the 9 weeks) was very frustrating. So you can understand my dilemma. Good final result, good response to problems and some excellent staff, but a difficult process with a significant error and delays prevents me from giving them an A rating on my job.
Description of Work: Bath remodel for 6x9 bathroom. Completely gutted, but nothing was moved-- no walls were changed, the neoangle shower was replaced with new neoangle shower, toilet remained in position, built-in vanity was replaced with furniture style vanity, linen tower and hamper cabinet.
They were punctual every day. They kept us informed in a professional way. While taking out old bathrooms, they kept rest of house dust free. The management and workers were professional in every way.
Description of Work: We had two new bathrooms installed. They were totally ripped out. Using cultured marble, we had one shower tub in one and one shower in the other. New light fixtures. Also we had porcelain tile floors in both. All walls were re-tectured. A beautiful job.

Quality of work was excellent. All contractors used were the best craftsmen. Price was average to quotes, but final product was above most contractors capability. Designer was very good at suggesting improvements to original plan. The project manager assigned was experienced and capable, but needed more help from the office as structured by AKB in providing the persons required at the needed times in the project. All work was well done to provide a showcase kitchen. The bath remodel work was also well done. The flooring company did an excellent job. The company employ's very good contractor's at every phase of the job. The final remodel of the kitchen was above our expectations. The initial sales and designer Michael, was very good at all phases of the project he was involved with. Johan has many years of providing remodel projects and stands behind the projects to maintain good quality work.
Description of Work: Kitchen Remodel, bath, refinished all hardwood floors. With purchased kitchen cabinets and appliances remodeled the kitchen completely. Re sheet rocked with new electrical -lighting, windows, placed kitchen cabinets , ordered granite and placed countertops, and appliances. Painted interior and exterior renovated sections. Remodeled a bathroom with new vanity and sinks, walls. Refinished all oak hardwood floors in house. Revised remodel plan as needed with design service.

I chose AKB over four other contractors. The decision came down between Cool Custom and AKB. I chose AKB because of Michelle. She had brilliant ideas of how to get the most function out of a small kitchen. The owner of AKB, Yohan ,was also another reason why AKB was chosen. The only problem I had, was mostly with the project manager. He fought with the tile guy(who threw his knee pads down and threaten to quit) and he argued with three different San Jose Permit inspectors. It took me three times to past the permit inspection.

Thank you for the kind words. The project manager was new with AKB and was brought in because of his knowledge and expertise. He could be a bit confrontational, but overall a pretty decent guy. His employment with AKB was short-lived and he left the company to become a building inspector. We wish him well.

BEING AN OLDER LADY I WAS TERRIFIED OF HIRING A CONTRACTOR BECAUSE OF ALL THE HORROR STORIES I WAS HEARING FROM MY FRIENDS ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES WITH CONTRACTORS . BUT REST ASSURED I HAD ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS WITH THIS COMPANY AND MY BATHROOM TURNED OUT BEAUTIFUL. I WAS BRACING MYSELF FOR SOMETHING TO GO WRONG ALONG THE WAY, BUT IT NEVER HAPPENED, EVERYTHING WENT SMOOTHLY AND ACCORDING TO PLAN. MICHAEL THANK YOU FOR HELPING ME WITH THE COLORS, PATRICK YOU HAVE AN AMAZING CREW AND I THANK EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THEM AND MOST OF ALL A VERY SPECIAL THANKS TO JOHAN FOR WORKING WITH ME AND MAKING IT ALL POSSIBLE.
Worked directly with the owner who was always consultative, responsive and cool-headed in the face of the inevitable remodeling challenges. The AKB crew was also very pleasant to work with and very talented in each of their disciplines. This was not my first home building/remodeling rodeo and I can be a very picky SOB when it comes to the quality to work. There were very few quality issues with the work performed and any issue I did raise was immediately addressed. The workmen did a good job of protecting the surrounding spaces and cleaning up at the end of every day. We did run a couple of weeks over the original four week schedule, but I also added 30% in change orders along the way. I would definitely use AKB again without hesitation.
Description of Work: Light but extensive remodel on a recently purchased home. Work included: ~ Paint/refinish kitchen cabinets ~ Install new tile backsplash ~ Install new ceramic/quartz countertops ~ New shaker style baseboard and crown molding throughout ~ Paint/refinish cabinets in 2.5 bathrooms ~ Install faux beams in livingroom and two bedrooms ~ Finish wood stair treads the refinish stair railings, risers, skirts and banisters ~ Repair sagging joist and refinish downstairs textured ceiling ~ Miscellaneous rewiring
Johan and his team did a fantastic job, from the cabinet install, to the tile and electrical and plumbing, every thing was top quality. Johan was always available if we had any questions or issues, and I couldn't be more pleased. The job was done in the time frame he told us, no delays, and all of the sub contractors were respectful of our home and did an incredible job. He was very hands on and made sure that we were completely satisfied. I have recommended AKB to any of my friends who are in the market for a remodel. We are currently working with AKB to do our bath remodel.
Description of Work: AKB remodeled our condo kitchen, It was a complete gut job, all new cabinets, sink, faucet, counter tops, tile back splash and tile floor, recessed lighting, new appliance installs, and painting.

I hired AKB for a very big job: the entire remodel of an historic 2600 sf two-story house. The job included engineering and design to allow expansion of the kitchen and suppression of a non-functional hallway, major foundation work, the complete replumbing and rewiring of the house, the gutting and remodeling of the kitchen and 3.5 bathrooms, installation of recessed lighting everywhere, construction of new closet space, new ducts, new water heater, installation of hardwood floors, restoration of an old fir staircase and old fir floors, repairs and replacement of non-functional door and window hardware, painting everywhere, removal of an obsolete heating system from the roof, earthwork to improve drainage, and many other things. A considerable fraction of the work represented more a restoration job than remodeling. I would say AKB did everything but the kitchen sink, except they did that too ! The final product was a wonderful house that will last yet another 100 years and that is more "historic" than when we started, because they were able to replicate historic features such as the wainscoting, baseboard trim, and window frames, transferring the designs from the oldest part of the house to the newer parts to give the appearance that all had all been constructed in the same era. The AKB workers showed great craftsmanship and pride in this restoration work and the quality was top notch. AKB provided a lot of good design ideas, and they readily accepted and implemented the ideas I had myself. AKB stood out compared to other contractors I have worked with by listening to me and doing what I wanted without wrangling. There were many unexpected issues that came up, as is normal for a remodel job, In addition, my wife and I changed our choices a number of times, and added new requests as the project progressed and we could better visualize the outcomes. The project was complicated by the fact I was often away on business during the remodeling time. Despite the complexity and my frequent absence from the work site, there was remarkably little miscommunication. The owner is a "hands-on" guy with great integrity, and I highly recommend him.

We were familiar with their work and schedule as they did our kitchen the year before. Very professional, timely and have an excellent crew that we have enjoyed working with. We have no complaints at all and would recommend AKB for anybody and would use them again! Michele, Johan, Mike and all the crew were the best to work with and helped resolve any issues in a timely manner. We did both our bathrooms back to back with a few weeks in between and all went smooth. The same goes when they did our kitchen last year, the transition period was made comfortable for us. We love their work!
Description of Work: They completely remodeled both our hall and master bathroom from start to finish. Demolition was clean and fast, plumbing and electrical were timely. Tile floor and shower are absolutely beautiful with quality work. We also had marble counter and a barn door put in that we love. It is a great look and AKB- Michele helped us design our new bathrooms. Great to work with!

We located AKB by looking for the highest rated company with great reviews. We were not disappointed at all and are very glad to have found them. We had them remodel a kitchen and two bathrooms for us. They have a really good designer, Michele, who worked with us to first understand our styles and tastes. She then created a design and helped us select tiles to use for the floor, backsplash, and bathroom walls. Michele showed us lots of granite and tiles that worked together to make a beautiful kitchen and bathrooms. We picked high quality cabinets that are the highest that we have seen and we are very happy with the ones we selected. The people doing the work are craftsmen who really care about their work. There were specialists for certain areas, like laying tile, and also generalists who worked in many areas. We were very happy with them all and found them to be hard workers. They always arrived promptly each morning to work that day and at the end of the day would clean inside and out before leaving. This major remodel ran smoothly and we would select AKB again for any other job we may have.
Description of Work: Remodel Kitchen and two bathrooms.
Let me say up front that we are very pleased with the end result and many aspects of working with AKB, and we would work with them again. Some might consider anything less than an 'A' an insult, but I still consider 'B' a good grade. I also acknowledge that with a full remodel like this involving multiple sub-contractors, the degree of difficulty is high. All that said, I felt there were enough hiccups that I could not give them the top grade. Improving these things could make a good company great. The first stage was working with the designer, starting with the initial consultation and estimate. This part went very smoothly. We talked to a few different vendors. Price quotes were roughly equivalent, but we went with AKB because they gave the best sense of being engaged in the specifics of our project, thinking through various options and challenges, etc. The designer was also good about vetting out some variables that would not become clear until further inspection/teardown and how they might impact the project, so that there were no surprises as to scope of work. Once we gave them our business, that level of engagement continued. We had a challenge to make the most out of a small bathroom while still expanding the shower. The designer did a good job working with me on her layout tool to play with different approaches until we settled on a solution that met our goals. This did entail moving plumbing (toilet was moving over a few inches, sink was moving from one wall to another), electrical, and the door (to make room for the vanity moving to a different wall), but the designer was clear on cost impact (and we had discussed this briefly in initial consultation), so again, no surprises there. We then proceeded to pick out cabinetry, tile, tile caps, fixtures, countertop, and paint from various vendors. This also went smoothly and we came up with choices that we were happy with and that came together well. The hiccups came into play during the actual execution of the project. Again, not too surprising in a project of this complexity, but enough to be an area for improvement. First, I had to ask multiple times to see an estimated schedule, which was eventually provided (owner was polite, apologized, explained that he had been out). Our next frustration was that it wasn't made clear to us from one day to the next if and when we should expect someone to show up. I understand that they are juggling multiple type of workers across multiple projects, which is a scheduling challenge, but I would at least expect them to be able to tell me at the end of each day who was showing up the next day so that my wife wouldn't just be stuck waiting and wondering all day. To their credit, once I complained about this, they rectified it -- someone started calling me each afternoon/evening to review progress and plan for the following day. Perhaps I should have said something sooner, but in my mind this should just be standard operating procedure and I shouldn't have to bring it up. There was also a little bit of confusion about the light fixture. This was the one thing we kept, but it was not compliant. It took me multiple queries to understand the exact compliance issue -- that it was not an LED fixture. At one point, I had been told it was because we did not have a vacancy sensor, but that turned out to be entirely separate (and they did install a vacancy sensor as well). AKB suggested putting in a compliant fixture for inspection, then replacing with the original fixture, but I wanted to understand the exact compliance issue before playing that sort of game (and I have since put LED bulbs in the fixture). We did settle on that plan, but it didn't seem like it was communicated to everyone -- when they came for the finish electrical, they asked me where the fixture was, and didn't seem to know the plan. We did eventually get it cleared up, but it took some calls and texts (including an amusing exchange where the AKB point of contact mistook me for his foreman, who has the same first name). We also had a minor issue at the very end where the shower door wasn't caulked all the way around on the inside, and it took a few days to get someone back out to fix that. The schedule was somewhat of a disappointment as well. Initially, I was told 3-5 weeks to complete, and the schedule I was given after the job started was for 4 weeks, IIRC (don't have it in front of me). AKB delayed the start of the job by a week, I was told in order to be able to line things up to give the best attention to my job. This gave me high hopes for a speedy completion, but it was not to be. If you count the final little piece of caulking, it took nearly 7 weeks (6 weeks if you don't count that). I didn't expect exact compliance to the schedule, of course, but it was still a bit much. However, as I've said, we are very pleased with our new bathroom. Quality of materials, work, and fixtures are all high and everything looks great, and that's what I'll appreciate for years to come. No issues on final inspection, either (a couple of issues on the initial, rough plumbing/electrical inspection were cleared up quickly). I would also like to make clear that, despite my issues with communication not always being clear, the personnel were consistently friendly and polite. I'm a bit of a stickler for clarity, information, and communication, and I'm sure I must have annoyed them at times, but they never reacted rudely, and I appreciate that. Also, there were no cost surprises. There were a couple of change orders early on, but they were things we had already discussed as possibilities at the outset (some things aren't clear until teardown), so they were not surprises.

I phoned Michelle and she scheduled an appointment within a couple of days. She listened to my thoughts on the project and also offered excellent suggestions. She also got the estimate to me within 10 days. I really liked the fact that AKB has connections with tile, granite and cabinet providers because it made my decisions so much easier. They started December first and expected the job to take about 6 weeks. I was really impressed with the fact that they always showed up at 8 AM and were ready to work. They have assembled a fine crew of craftsmen and I was really pleased with all of the results. I highly recommend them and will choose them for my next project.

The service was excellent. They did everything according to the code. The staff was excellent and they left the area clean everyday. They always stayed and did what they needed to do. I moved the toilet three feet in the bathroom and it caused problems for the town and they made sure everything was installed correctly. I found a leak in my crawl space a year later. They came out and saw a solder had blown and fixed it at no cost.

We got several bids for doing the work - AKB wasn't the cheapest, but they offered a great value proposition and working with Michele was a huge plus. Michele did a great job of helping us pick out all of the required elements and gently guiding us away from things that wouldn't work as well as better options. We had a few hiccups along the way - mostly because you don't know what's behind a wall until the wall comes down. We ended up needing a new patio, which was unexpected and set us back in terms of timing. (Apparently it's a good practice to make sure that your patio is lower than your house so water doesn't drain into the house.. someone should have told the original builder that!) The last couple of weeks of the project took longer than expected and there were some communication issues, but Michele and Johan made sure that at the end of the day, everything was right, which is really all anyone can ask for. We've lived in the kitchen for about a year and a half now and are still very pleased with how wonderfully it came out. So pleased, that we're currently having them redo our master bath, living room, and floors throughout the house. We really can't say enough wonderful things about Michele - while the construction on the finished product of the kitchen is good, she's the reason the design came together so cohesively and we get so many compliments on it.

new double vessel sinks in cherry vanity, cosmetic table with bench, built-in storage for clothes hamper, soft-close drawers, marble walk-in shower ( could hold 4 people!) rainshower head, hand-held shower head and 3 jets. heated stone floors, solid bamboo floors in closet, new ceiling lighting vanity area and in shower/toilet. commercial exhaust fan and new window. great bathroom! All the products were very good. the only problem was that the workmen were not well organized- lack of communication caused some men to come when others should have been there, causing delays. Owner's response was timely and things got done promptly when he was informed. Definitely would work with them again and really review the work schedule. We had other contractors bid the job and none were acceptable. American kitchen and bath was our #1 choice!!!
Description of Work: complete renovation of master bath, vanity area, closet space ( not cupboards and hanging spaces) michelle was an excellent designer and project manager. they tore out the existing fixtures, removed wall, extending the rooms.
I want to say that I am disabled and I cannot do household repair, fixes or remodeling any more. Therefore, I require a contractor that can not only do the required task, but goes above and beyond when needed. American Kitchen and Bath (AKB) not only met and exceeded our expectations, they also helped with design and decor recommendations. Our house is 28 years old and we raised 3 sons here ((lots of wear and tear). We purchased the house new and we had done almost nothing to update the home. When we began the contractor selection process we requested a quote on the upstairs hallway bath only. I felt that we could evaluate this job at completion and proceed from there. Our first contact from AKB was Michele and she came to the house to measure, etc., for the bid. She offered design suggestions and explained the process, as we were rookies at this. After the bid was submitted, we went to the AKB office/showroom and we were very impressed. Michele showed us dozens of samples of plumbing fixtures, countertop materials, tile flooring, paint colors, toilet, sinks, etc. After this consult we chose AKB and we are extremely happy that we did. This bathroom was finished on time and on budget and it looks beautiful. We are so grateful that Michele helped with design and color (I've determined that we are home decorator challenged) and we proceeded with the master bath, etc. The more work we had AKB do, the more comfortable and impressed we became with all facets of their workmanship. It Any remodeling is difficult for the homeowner, but the work crews from AKB were efficient, friendly, punctual and always cleaned up every night before they went home. It's also important to note that the paint, plumbing, tile and cabinet installation was completed by AKB employees. The only subcontractor I saw were electricions and AKB takes full responsibility. All of AKB's workmen made our experience very positive. AKB just completed all the work we wanted at this time and we will no doubt have them complete the bedroom painting and interior doors after the first of the year. Finally, it must be noted that Michele has consistently helped us overcome many challenges and Johan (owner) was always available when we called. Johan also visited our home several times to check on the job progress, workmanship and cleanliness. I would highly recommend AKB for any and all kitchen and bath remodeling. They treat you like family and consistently perform to the highest standards
Description of Work: Completely remodeled 2-1/2 bathrooms, laundry room and kitchen. Also installed wood flooring, baseboards, door casings, lighting, and painted all areas except the bedrooms. This included the family room, living room, dining room, small office, and upstairs hallway. Some repair and texture work on the walls was also needed. Living and dining room has very high vaulted ceilings.

We are very pleased with our kitchen. From the design phase through the final fixes and walk through everyone was very pleasant and professional. I don't believe AK&B will ever be anyone's lowest bidder however a project of this scope is a stressful and difficult affair and you better have trust and confidence in the people entering and leaving your home on a daily basis. The prospect of having our kitchen out of service for an extended period was also a factor in going with AK&B, their crews were well coordinated and finished the job within their projected timeframe. Once again I want to praise all the craftsmen who worked on our project and also give a special shoutout for the designer, Michelle who was patient and helped my wife and I choose the materials that now make up the space we love to cook and live in.

I hired American Kitchen and Bath to remodel our dated kitchen. I should start with the good news-- at the end of the day, I think their quality seemed pretty good (certainly not shoddy). I'm not really versed enough in Kitchen Remodels to say whether it was an "A" or B" job, but it certainly looks pretty good on completion. The bad news was the process it took to get there. I hired them to do our kitchen remodel starting a scant two weeks after our fourth child was born (my wife was on maternity leave and as difficult as it was to do a kitchen remodel with a new baby it would even be more difficult once she got back to work. I bid it out to four different companies, and while AKB was the most expensive bid (though all were fairly similar), I decided to use them. With four young children in the house, I was very concerned about the time it would take to do the job. Our lives were chaotic enough without adding in a long remodel. The clincher for me in going in with AKB was their owner coming in for the final bid in which he pronounced would take two weeks (complete with a schedule) and that ?he couldn?t see any reason? it would go beyond 2 and ½ weeks. I indicated to them the extreme importance of sticking to the schedule and they agreed to put in a provision in the contract saying workmen (plural) would be at the site every day from 8:00-4:00. The kitchen project ended up taking five weeks (despite the fact that we had zero change orders and no complications that were discovered midway through the job.) These were five really uncomfortable weeks where we had no access to our kitchen and in many cases had to go outside the house to go from one half of our house to the other, since the only route is through the kitchen. There was frequently only one worker on the job (not the ?workmen? mentioned in the contract) and while they sometimes put in a full day, sometimes they only put in ½ or 2/3 of a day. I was immediately on the case as soon as I saw the schedule slipping, at which point I was given a detailed fake schedule that AKB had to know was in no way based in reality. I get that remodeling projects frequently run late, but I had made a huge point of the schedule up front, and the project ended up taking 2 and ½ times the length of time promised. I was offered a variety of excuses but the bottom line is that I am confident that they accepted this job knowing there was no way they could complete it in the promised timeframe. I made clear to them throughout the job that their delays were a huge hardship to my family and asked that they needed to make this up somehow (a discount on the job would have seemed the most natural way?I run a small hospitality business and on the rare occasions when I fundamentally let down a customer, I make it up to them financially in a significant way.) AKB seemed uninterestedin giving me any kind of discount, to which I can only conclude that they thought their level of service was acceptable?which it most certainly wasn?t. I wasn?t going to press the issue, because for me it was more about the recognition that they had been less than forthright and seriously inconvenienced a customer than it was about the money. In any case, there are certainly others on this list who have had a good experience with this provider, but I was very frustrated and disappointed with mine. I didn?t feel they were honest with me, and they finished the job inexcusably behind schedule, causing my family a good deal of hardship at a time at which we really didn?t need our lives being complicated.

Response from American Kitchen And Bath Inc
We apologize for the delay, and the inconvenience this member experienced. We also would like to thank this member for giving us an A for quality. It has been a couple weeks since we completed the kitchen and I am sure that the few additional days without the kitchen are already forgotten, whereas memories of a bad remodel will last a lifetime. Yes, I did promise this member that we could do the job within 3 weeks, and we at American Kitchen and Bath feel bad that the remodel took longer than planned. We installed a temporary kitchen in the members office area to make it easier to wash dishes and baby bottles. We go out of our way to make remodeling as painless as possible. I will not make excuses. But I will explain that American Kitchen and Bath had the misfortune of losing 2 employees on short notice and another on disability. This was completely unexpected and beyond our control. The outside contractors we occasionally use were booked up solid. This member called almost daily pressing for American Kitchen and Bath to rush the project. I explained that I could have a painter spray the cabinetry to meet the schedule, but we would lose our quality. We would rather be a couple of days late than sacrifice on our quality. It took another 2 weeks after the 3 week deadline. This member and family were on vacation for one of those weeks and the kitchen was fully functional the other week. All that remained to do was install the cabinet doors. There was additional work that we did not submit in an effort to make up for the inconvenience of being behind schedule. The member must have forgotten that we replaced a badly corroded leaky pipe in the wall which resulted in additional drywall repairs, painting some cabinetry in the adjacent room and some added trim and painting in the dining area. These extras added time to the project as well as a couple of occasions ircumstanes that we were prevented from working as planned, but I will not discuss them. This member asked for a discount or he would give us negative revues on Angies and other sides. I invited him to say anything about American Kitchen and Bath that he wants and to share his experience with other members. Even the best companies can run into difficulties, it is how our company solves the situation that counts. American Kitchen and Bath will not fool other members by having its' customers lie about their experience. We are very happy that this member likes the new kitchen and thanks them for the A for quality. That is what American Kitchen and bath is all about. We had AKB remodel our bathrooms a couple of years ago and were very pleased with the result, so when we were ready for a kitchen remodel, we called them again. Michelle, the salesperson, is very professional and very helpful. She helped us pick out all the cabinets, flooring, counters, etc. and made several really useful suggestions. We planned to start the remodel, including new copper piping, at the end of September, but then we had a pipe burst in August. Johann, AKB owner, sent his plumber out the very next morning to fix the broken pipe. We are looking forward to working with AKB again when it's time to do the rest of the remodel. I'll update this review when the job is complete. (NOTE: $ amount is for the complete kitchen remodel including copper piping throughout the downstairs, but doesn't include appliances.) UPDATE: AKB took forever to get the kitchen finished, but mostly because there were a lot of unexpected problems with our fifty-year-old house, and we left for a planned three-week vacation at the originally planned finish date, which put off the final work till after we got back. They ended up having to replace most of our heating system pipes under the house because it was impossible not to damage the old ones while installing new copper water piping. And, of course, we made a few changes as the remodel went along. Although they charged us for the changes we asked for, they did not charge us for the heating pipes or any other items that had to be added. This is a very honest, fair company who will continue to work with you until you're happy - and they do a good job, too. They're not the cheapest, but for the peace of mind of knowing they're going to make things right, no matter what, and for decent quality work, too, I highly recommend them.

We ended up going with a different company since the estimate was on the high end of our budget and had some unknowns (footings extra, etc.). The owner was willing to send out someone to determine how many footings we needed, but due to unforeseen health issues for Michelle, the process took longer than we anticipated. Overall, our experience was much better this time around.
Description of Work: This is an update to a previous review that I was unable to change since I joined Angie's list under a different email account. We had previously worked with Julie who we found out was no longer with the company. I called back and we had Michelle come out for a kitchen remodel estimate. She was very friendly and helpful. AKB made extra efforts to help us with our plans given our previous experience.
