We had an ugly builder grade exterior front door (the kind that has fake bumpy wood grain) from when our place was built 30 years ago. So my husband and I decided that we want to replace it with something nicer with a view window. I did some research on Angie's List and decided to contact Door Dr. based on the reviews. We communicated mostly via emails and Pat always responded quickly. We selected a door through the online catalog on the manufacturer's website. Pat then gave us an estimate (materials + labor) in the email and came to our place to check out the actual work to be done and confirmed the price. Everything was a breeze. For the actual door installation, Pat was so experienced and he did an excellent job. (He's also very easy going and nice to chat with.) We installed some new wood floor at the foyer ourselves couple months ago and we cut the wood planks a little too short at the door threshold area. We were worried that it'd be a big problem because it seems like every contractor that we talked to have any clue how to fix it. But Pat made the threshold work and that area looks seamless. He made the new door fit like a glove into our existing door frame. Even our next door neighbor noticed it and asked my husband where we got our door done. Later on we had some issue with the glazing at door itself with the door manufacturer and Pat was extremely helpful (even though it has nothing to do with his work). He checked in with me from time to time to see how it went and I can tell that he takes his reputation very seriously. The manufacturer ended up sending us a new door and Pat came to replace the new door for us with no problem. We offered to pay for his time since it's not his fault but he did it for free. If I ever have to install another door, I'd definitely hire Pat again. I heard so many horror stories from friends about contractors messing up their exterior door installation. I'm just glad that we found Door Dr.
Description of Work: Replaced existing front door with a brand new wood door, fixed the existing door threshold and jamb, added new perimeter weather strip and installed new handle set on the door.

I?m very disappointed with the work Pat Stone the Door Doctor did at my house, and with the customer service he provided after I told him I wasn?t happy with his work. Here are the problems I had with the Door Doctor: First, without consulting me, he installed my rear entry door with a threshold 2.25? above the finish floor, which doesn?t look good and is a trip hazard. Second, when I told him I wasn?t happy with the high threshold, he was willing to fix it, but it seemed like he was trying to find the easiest way to fix it, instead of the right way. Third, he wouldn?t expedite the rework of my door. Since it was his mistake, I was hoping that he would schedule the rework quickly, he didn?t even try. Fourth, he wouldn?t consider working around my schedule. Pat does not do installations on the weekends. I knew this, but again, since it was his mistake, I was hoping an exception could be made so I wouldn?t have to miss another day of work. Finally, after I told Pat that I didn?t want him to do the rework and that I would be leaving an unfavorable report on Angie?s List, he sent me one last email rationalizing his actions with lies and blaming me for everything. It?s seems every year it gets harder to find a contractor that is honest, and stands behind his work. Pat Stone failed me on both counts and this is why I am disappointed with him. Here are the lies Pat sent me in his last email: First lie: in an effort to make it look like he was trying to expedite the rework of my door during the third week of September, he wrote, ?I guess you don't remember I called you last week to let you know I wouldn't be able to come out till this week.? There was no voice mail on my phone and there was no record of him calling on my phone log. Second lie: in an effort to make it look like the door I chose was part of the problem, he wrote, ?And it seems you also forgot our discussion about the fiberglass door you wanted would be smaller as that was the only size I could order the door you insisted on.? I never insisted on any door, I chose that door because I liked it and at no time did Pat say that it would cause problems for the door installation. Third lie: in an effort to make it look like it was my choice to have a high threshold, he wrote, ?And perhaps you are also forgetting me discussing the position of the door when I installed it 2 months ago. I gave you the option of up tight to the header, resulting in a high threshold or down low and trimming out the top of the jamb. I called you over and showed you both ways. Your decision was the way I installed it.? While he was installing the doors, I was in the living room watching TV and he did not call me over during the installation to discuss anything. These conversations never took place in any of our verbal, voice mail, or email discussions. It was only after I told him that I didn?t want him to come back to my house and that I would be leaving him negative feedback that he made up these lies. If what he is saying is true, why wouldn?t he have brought up all these facts when I first complained and wanted him to rework the door? Also, why wouldn?t he have told me that reworking the door would be an extra cost, after all, according to him, everything was my choice, right? He didn?t bring up any of these facts because they are not facts, they are lies and none of these discussions occurred. I have attached pictures of the threshold and of the trim work around the door. I included pictures of the trim work because the gap between the trim and the edge of the door jam is different on all sides, looks terrible, and with the threshold picture is a good example of the type of work he provided at my house. In the end, I realize that it?s my word against his word and all I can do is explain the experience that I had with Pat, provide you with pictures, and let you make up your own mind. If you are interested, here is what I recommend if you are thinking about hiring Pat Stone the Door Doctor: 1. Make sure you discuss everything about your job in detail and make sure he provides you with a detailed break down of the work he?s going to do and the cost of the labor and the parts. Make sure you get this in writing, even if it?s just in an email. 2. Be prepared to wait at least three weeks to get an estimate and another 3 to 4 weeks to actually have him come do the work. 3. If you work during the day, be prepared to take time off work because he will not do installations on the weekends. 4. Periodically, check his work through the installation process, if it doesn?t look right, stop him and ask questions. 5. Don?t let him work more than four to six hours, I think the quality of his work suffers when he works the whole day. 6. When he is finished, make sure you inspect his work thoroughly and if there is anything you don?t like, discuss it with him and make him do it to your satisfaction. 7. If he can?t complete the work to your satisfaction before going home for the day, don't pay him. Wait until he comes back and finishes the job or if he?s done with most of the job, consider giving him a partial payment, but hold back enough to make it worthwhile for him to come back. It is unfortunate that I had to go through this experience with Pat, but it has taught me a lesson I will not forget. In the future, I will only be hiring individuals or companies that are licensed, bonded, insured, and have great feedback. This seems to be the formula that works well for me. Good luck!

Response from Door Dr
The only truth to the member's complaint is that I installed 2 doors. He was thoroughly informed of the consequences if he went forward with the back door he insisted on and approved, Â…an extremely high threshold or stucco and plaster repair. In fact it took a week of trying to discourage him and suggesting alternatives before the order went forward. I have three separate bids from my supplier to verify this. I also, during installation, showed him the different ways I could install the door and casing and asked which way he would prefer before driving one nail. After completing the door installed to his choice I asked him to inspect the work. He did and apparently approved my finished job and wrote me a check. Now comes the puzzling part of his fabrication. Three weeks went by before I got a phone call voicing his dissatisfaction with my install on the back door saying he would pay me to come out to resolve this. I responded and said I would come out, no charge, and do what I could to make this right for him. That is when he insisted I come the next day, Saturday, to correct his error. After some negotiating we came up with a 2 to 3 week window. On the Thursday before the end of 2nd week I called to say I couldn't get there until the first part of the next week. This is also something I have a record of. I have given this a lot of thought as I don't take my reputation lightly. I do all my work myself and take a lot of pride in it. I always go above and beyond to take care of all my clients and strive for 100% satisfaction. I am quite disheartened over this whole dilemma. I discuss all phases of every job fully and completely and am sure my other clients will vouch for this. I believe he is trying to discount my work $500.00 using my 99.9% perfect record from 108 clients on Angie's List Â…first with his threats of leaving a bad review and now with this complaint. The total labor to remove and install both doors was just over $500.00 and apparently the front door is ok. A fair and amicable amount to reinstall his back door is $100.00. I will be happy to write a check now. By offering a check for this amount I hope no one thinks it is an admission of guilt especially after being called a liar. I do, however, hope that anyone else considering working for him sees this and runs as fast as they can.

I used the email through Angie's List and got a call right away from Pat. It was even a holiday (Labor Day)! He was able to schedule us at a convenient time the next morning I purchased the deadbolts online thinking I would install them myself -- after seeing all the work involved, I'm SO glad I called Door Dr. Pat worked diligently and did a fantastic job on the installation. They work perfectly! He also fixed an exterior door knob that has been giving us trouble for nearly five years--it works better now than it ever did when new. I give Pat my highest recommendation. He was on time, got to work immediately, and even played with our dogs. My beagle loved him! I don't know about the previous review on here regarding dogs--we had no trouble here. In fact, we consulted with Pat about getting a dog door done--it's something I've wanted for years and I', glad I asked him. I'll definitely make the call to him when I'm ready to tackle that project.
Description of Work: Two deadbolts (on two different doors) installed that I had already purchased online. Also, we needed the plate and an existing doorknob adjusted.

The reason why I didn't use Door Dr was he didn't have a license. He came in and looked at the first door. He asked me if I was getting the paints done and said he will do the job after the painting was done which I thought had nothing to do with his job. He went upstairs to see the doors and asked me if I was getting new carpets there as he would not be able to vacuum. He even complained about me having dogs. He gave me a quote over the phone. It was not a good experience.

The painting and the carpets both were directly involved in the work I would be performing. As they would both be slightly compromised. And I was unable to complete the work ahead of a painter. So I'm not sure how this was unprofessional to inquire about. Anyone who knows me knows I interact with the four legged children in the house, possible more that the humans. In fact I think there are a couple of reviews her on Angies's attesting to this. I will admit it was difficult trying to talk over 3 of Marcia's kids (Chihuahuas) voicing their opinions the whole time. I apologize if I was annoyed. I am in the process of getting a state license. Test date and fees have been paid. .

Patrick removed and disposed of old exterior door and installed a new two raised panel wood door with window. He finished the job in about 4 hours. Cleaned the work area. Patrick was honest from the first phone call. He said he worked alone and was very busy but he would work me in. Gave me a fair estimate. Told me how long before the door would come in and that he would call. He did just that. We set up a time to have the door installed. He came right on time. Recommended in our first conversation that I paint the door as soon as possible so that the door would not be exposed to the elements. Since I was not able to do it myself he recommended a painter that he uses. We co-ordinated the installation of the door and the painter. The painter did a wonderful job. The name is Eudoxio Painting, (626) 827-7673. I am so pleased with the work Patrick did. I would use him again. Also his painter. Patrick also installed a door and replaced the door frame (termites) for my son. He is very satified with his work..
Description of Work: Removed and disposed of exterior door.Installed a two raised panel wood door with window.Installed bright brass hinges and installed the old doorknob and deadbolt,Tighten threshold.New weather stripping.New doorsill.Clean up.Tighten two additional deadbolts.Recommended a very good painter.Returned to check out the window that I couldn't open. Nothing wrong with the window. It was just stuck. It just needed a little muscle.

Pat came over to the house to consult with me, brought a brochure, took measurements and made recommendations. We had a rain delay that he communicated to me in a pro-active manner and we rescheduled without a hitch. Installation was fast and thorough and he made sure I was happy with the results before leaving. Door looks and functions great and I couldn't be happier with the result. My neighbor was so impressed with his work, she called him right over to work on her doors next. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: Pat was knowledgeable, responsive, thorough and accommodating. Finished product is exactly what he promised. Installation was incredibly smooth and he made sure I was completely satisfied before he left the house. Highly recommended!

I read so many good reviews for this company on Angie's List that I was willing to wait until he had time for me. To me, when someone is too busy, it translates into that his work must be good, and I am willing to wait. Once I contacted Pat, he kept in touch ( even when he was busy) so that we could set up a date when he could come out. Since I work, I also had a tight schedule. Pat came out reviewed the work needed and took all the necessary measurements. What I liked is that Pat took care of all the material. His price is very reasonable since it included labor and material. This saved me lot of time. Once the material came in, we scheduled the install. All the work listed were done in a single day. I am very pleased with all the work Pat did. Pat is a man who takes pride in his work and his work shows it. He also did some extra work which he did not charge us. Thanks Pat, it was nice doing business with you.
Description of Work: - labor and material to install screen door for garage - labor and material to install three deadbolts/3 key locks to three doors - labor and material to replace front door glass with plywood and install a peephole - labor and material to install two (2) mirror (201/2" X 69") for bedroom closets - labor and material to repair a broken glass in bedroom window - few other items which he did without charging us

It took a while for Pat to come out, but to his credit he did let me know from the beginning that I was on his list and it would take a few weeks for him to come out. Sure enough, I got a phone call a few weeks later. Pat came out to look at the issue. He gave me the best option for a rental property and took measurements. In no time I had a call with a price and specifics. He replaced the metal frame with a wood one and had a door made to fit the space. Pat was courteous, clean and respectful. I would certainly recommend his for any future jobs.
Description of Work: I had a door that swung into a small bathroom. This made the door more of a hindrance than anything else. The problem was that the frame was metal, so it wasn't a matter of just switching the hinges.

He's excellent. He was helpful in picking out a product and very professional. Something I really, really appreciated is that our front door needed a clear glaze and he recommended a painter. He said because the front door faces the east it would get a lot of sun and he recommended we get it resealed every couple of years. A couple years later I couldn't get ahold of the painter so I asked the Door Dr. and he got ahold of the painter for me. He remembered who was He contacted the painter after he had already done his part of the work for me and I really appreciated that.

Great job, we were very concerned about effect on desk, both quality and appearance. He suggested a better approach than we envisioned, obtained the hardware and customized it to our needs, came back and installed, cleaning up after himself. Hard to schedule because of our small job. I think he gets committed on large jobs and is somewhat hard to schedule, but met his commitment to us. He also stuck to his estimated price, even though he ended up having to do a bit more work than planned (customizing the hardware.)

Pat Stone did a great job for us! He directed me to a website to pick out the American-made, high quality screen doors that we then purchased from him. They have pet guards that prevent our cats from pulling them apart the way they did our old screen doors. He did a great job building a new door sill for us. The old one had completely rotted away & it's remnants had to dug out of the wall. He made our front window functional so that it opens, closes, can be locked, and has a well-fitting screen that deters cats from escape. I only rated him down a bit on responsiveness, because he's a one-man operation & was out of town when I first called him. I left a message, and he didn't call back for several days, for which he apologized. He warned me it would take several weeks for him to get to making us a bid, which it did, but once he started the job, he was very punctual and completed it in a timely manner. If you want high-quality work done with high-quality materials, he's the guy for the job.

I called Door Dr based on reviews on Angie's List. Patrick promptly returned my call and we discussed the problem I was having with seeing a lot of daylight around the front door. Patrick said that it might be a while before he could come out because of his backlog of work. That was okay with us - we'd been living with the door like it was for years so it wasn't an urgent issue. He did say that if he was in the area on another job, he'd call to see if I was home to have him at least take a look at it to see what we were looking at repair-wise. Within two weeks, Patrick had a chance to come and look at the door. He said it could be fixed with correctly installed weatherstripping and could do it then. Worked for me :-) and sure beat having the door frame rebuilt! Patrick did a beautiful job on the door and now the bugs stay out, the heat will stay inside in the winter, and my air conditioner is not cooling the porch. We also received a bid from Patrick on replacing a door that has a kitty door in it that is no longer used. The bid is very reasonable and we will soon be calling him to fix that for us.

Pat is wonderful to work with and is busy for a reason! He is truly amazing at his trade but also has a great emphasis on customer service. We love our new side door. We are still waiting on parts for the front door but all in all it has been a great experience. We would definitely work with him again.

Positive experience from beginning to end. Have tried over the last few years to get these windows fixed, but no one seemed to have knowledge about how to repair them. Tenants could open them, but because the mechanism was broken, the windows could not stay up and tenants used various means to keep them open. Thank goodness for the Door Doctor! Not only was he able to repair/fix them, he was professional, came out for bid and returned all calls promotly, showed up on time to do the work, and excellent price. Will use him again for windows, and for doors when necessary. All tenants are extremely happy with the results!!

Didn't have work completed, but wouldn't hesitate to call Door Dr again if the need arose.
Description of Work: I called Door Dr to get an estimate of, and understanding about, the work required to repair a custom glass door in a home that we were selling. He called me back right away, when I called on two separate occasions, one initial inquiry and one clarification. He gave me a reasonable estimate relative to other providers and seemed to be very thorough, both in making sure he understood the nature and scope of the work, and in the materials that would be needed. Quotations from competing vendors, who are not as specialized, support the value that was offered by Door Dr. I felt I could rely confidently on his expertise and the quote (within a range) and passed the info on to our buyer. If he had been available to complete the work before escrow closed, I would have hired him.
