Tony's was chosen for their fair price as recommended by my personal contractor. They initially buffed the floors. took out nails that were exposed and covered the floor with a coating that made the 40 year old hardwood floors that were covered with wall to wall carpets looked-new. Some large old water stains near the leaky aluminum windows in the front living room were almost gone, or hardly noticeable when they finished the job. They came early to do the job and worked until it was completely done. They work was done prior to our sale of my parent's house. and it sold quite easily due in part to the work that Tony's hardwood floor did.

I will use Tony one more time for the master bedroom. then I'm done for the next 50 years or more - after the tent. Highly recommend his crew.
Description of Work: Used them twice 5 years apart. Great service both times. In both cases I removed carpets, nails, etc. also floor base boards and door moulding as I wanted to upgrade them to a more modern moulding. So Tonys crew came in to top prep and sand down original (60 year old) hardwood and them 2-3 coats. The first job went very smooth. Price was very reasonable - much less than a local brick and mortar store with a good reputation. The second time we brought him back to do 2 bedrooms. I cleared the rooms so his crew came in and got to work. This time however they discovered some boards were badly damaged by termites so I had a termite inspection over the next week to see the extent of the damage. It wasn't bad. I had Tony come back a week later to finish (2 days more). Looks great just like the first time. I found Tony very easy to work with and flexible with the interruptions.

In a word, lousy. At this point almost a year after the floor was installed we have a finish that is very easily scratched. The fumes bothered our tenants for over a month. Here's the blow-by-blow details: We had an apartment which we needed to have flooring installed on a very time constrained schedule due to tenants moving in. We supplied the prefinished bamboo T&G flooring, which had an extremely hard and durable finish. We send Jim at Tony's Hardwood Floors an e-mail in advance with a link to the manufacturer's installation instructions and specs. Jim started a week before the tenants were to move in. He hadn't read our e-mail. We looked at the staples he had and said "Those aren't the right staples - they're too large a gauge!" "Don't worry" he said, "They'll work". Well, after he had installed the first few boards we (not him) noticed that there was a raised bump on the surface of the plank where each staple was. We were right, the staples were too big. He had to rip out the flooring with the bumps. Things went well for a while, until he got to a hall and bedroom where he needed to install a groove to groove joint with a spline the entire length of both rooms. He used construction adhesive on the spline, but somehow managed to get lots of glue smears on the finished surface. We quickly pointed out to him that there was glue smeared on the floor. "Don't worry" he said, "I'll get it off." The next day the glue was still there. We looked at the instructions on the adhesive he had used, and it said to remove unwanted glue immediately. We said "There's still glue on the floor!" "Don't worry" he said, "It will come off". The next day, the same thing... Two days later, when he tried cleaning up the spots, (you guessed it) it wouldn't come off. Hmmm. We all agreed, it looked pretty bad. But he had a plan. "I'll screen the floor in the two rooms, and put a coat of finish over it. We weren't thrilled with the idea of putting another coat over the excellent manufacturer's finish, but what else could we do? So he got a gallon of finish. It was the right brand that was recommended, but unfortunately the wrong type! On the container the instructions said (in capital letters) "If recoating a factory prefinished floor, DO NOT USE". It went on to say "Delamination can occur". Oh, and he also only applied the finish at half the thickness recommended on the container, and told us it was OK to walk on much sooner than the time recommended on the container. So guess what happened? A week later you could scratch it off with a fingernail! But he had another plan. "I'll sand off the finish I applied, and put a coat of the right finish on." "But will you be able to sand ALL of the bad finish off?" we said. "Sure!" he said. Meanwhile our tenants had moved in, and were being super-carefu tryingl not to scratch the floor, which they did anyway. They weren't very happy about having to move all their furniture and belongings out of the two room for the week it would take for the new finish to fully cure. So Jim came with his sander, and sanded. Unfortunately... he was only able to sand very little of the bad finish without going hrough the factory finish (and stain) in spots. So he stopped, and we all agreed there was nothing to do but put a coat of the good finish over the sanded bad finish. More than a week later, you could still scrape off the bad finish with a fingernail - and to boot, the tenants were complaining about the odor. At this point we are left with an easily scratched finish. In the future when our tenants move out, we will have to get the floors totally sanded, stained, and refinished. Even then it most likely won't be as hard a finish as the original factory finish. To his credit, we will say a few things in Jim's favor. He said not to bother paying him the balance we still owed him ($1,000 plus incidental materials). The two rooms that he didn't have to refinish look great. He tried very hard to do a good job, and he tried to fix his mistakes at each point. He spent a LOT of time on our floor, more than double the week he thought it would take. He showed up each day pretty close to the time he said, and even worked on the weekend. What he DIDN'T do was: (1) listen to our advice, and (2) read instructions. That, and a little bad luck, turned our job into a fiasco.
Description of Work: Jim removed the old carpeting and installed 600 sq. ft. of prefinished bamboo T&G flooring which we supplied in an apartment we own. We agreed to pay $3,000 for the job, but wound up only paying $2,000 (see below for horrific details).

My Brazilian Cherry hardwood floor needed a renewed coat of urethane. Tony came for the estimate promptly and was able to schedule the job at my convenience. He and his helper moved some heavy pieces of furniture for me and completed the job quickly and professionally. The next week I noticed some defective areas and he came back immediately to fix the problem. It turned out the problem was caused by the previous contactor but Tony fixed the problem at no cost. I wanted to pay him but he refused to take any money from me. I give Tony my highest recommendation and would absolutely use him again for any hardwood floor work.

Poorly - tried to renegotiate price on the day of installation.
Description of Work: Tony came to my house approx. 6 months ago and gave me an estimate to do hardwood floors in a bedroom. It took me a while to get the job organized and in the meantime we both lost the original estimate. I found a good deal on pre-finished hardwood floors that I liked at a local store. I called Tony, told him about it, he said it was a good price, we agreed on a price for installation. He arrived this morning to do the installation. My wife and I had put in a lot of time getting the room cleaned up and organized for the work. There was some furniture moving that was necessary. Tony said that he had told me originally that he would not move furniture. I did not recall this statement. He did not mention it last week when we scheduled the work. When he showed up this morning he was not happy about the furniture moving. But, he and his crew started doing it. As they were getting ready to do the job, he said that it would cost more than we had agreed. He pulled out his calculator and came up with a number about 35% larger than we had agreed. I made an offer in between the two numbers, he rejected it and packed up and left. I would not do business with this individual.

It was fantastic. We got an estimate the very same day he came out to see the house. The estimate was in writing and specified what would be covered, giving cost breakdowns for the refinish versus repair areas of the floor, by the square foot. I believe the total square footage covered was around 765 sq. ft. We were told how much time in advance we'd need to schedule them to go ahead with the plans, and how long it would take (3 days if it turned out staining was unnecessary, and 4 days if it were) for the repair, sanding, and three coats of finish. Tony's provided the most prompt responses to our initial inquiry and follow-up questions, as well as beating the competing two quotes by a mile. If I hadn't seen all the great reviews on Angie's List, I would have been suspicious of his very low estimate, but we decided to trust the reviews. We are so glad we did! Everything went perfectly. We came home the first day, when they had finished the repair and sanding portion of the work, looked around and honestly thought they had ripped out every plank and given us a whole new floor. Everything looked beautiful. Everyday, we came home to find it more beautiful. There was one area of misunderstanding when we realized they had stained and done two coats of finish instead of three, so we asked on the last day if they were going to do the third one, and it turned out they had meant that if the floors needed staining (due to severe, deep scratches/scarring in the existing wood surface), they would just do two coats of finish on top of that. Despite the misunderstanding, they immediately said, no problem to doing a third coat as that is what the contract said. They came in the following day (a Saturday) to do the final quote. Our floors are just *stunning*. Throughout the entire process, they were extremely professional, affable, timely, and reliable. We trust them completely and will definitely hire them again to refinish some of the rooms we hadn't had a chance to get this time around. We've already recommended them to our friends.
Description of Work: The floors in our living room, dining room, and hallways were sanded, stained, and refinished. Large parts of the floors were missing floorboards or were otherwise irreparably damaged from decades of abuse, leaks, and renovations with moving floor plans. New hardwood needed to be matched to the old patterns, stained, and finished as well.

Overall I would highly recommend Tony and his crew. He showed up right on time to give us an estimate, and we scheduled the work a week later. You really couldn't ask for a friendlier guy, and they guys on his crew were great. One of them even asked if he could grab some lunch for me! Kept the place really clean while they were working, and did a great job cleaning up afterwards. Quick and painless, I would recommend Tony to anyone I know. We are also having him come back to do more work in the future.
Description of Work: Tony's crew refinished our upstairs hardwood floors - (approx. 580 sq. ft.). Lot's of pet damage from previous owner. Filled in all holes left from carpet padding and tack strips. Floors were then sanded and stained with three coats of finish. Also came back and installed some wood at the entrance ways of our bathroom at no charge. The floors are over 80 years old, and he really brought them back to life. Did a great job at a great price. The job took about three days or so, and they even came on the weekend. They started the job on friday, and to my surprise, I got a call on Monday afternoon saying my floors were done.

We originally got a quote from Jim a year ago but didn't get a chance to start the work until this year. Jim honored the original price/estimate. He came out the next day to look at our floor again and we agreed to start the following week. The job lasted two days. Jim came out with his co-worker and they did an excellent job. I was very concerned about the dust and they did a great job of covering the cabinets and appliances. Although I still had to perform a through wipe-down when they left, I felt that they did their job in minimizing the dust.
Description of Work: The finish on our 2 yr old newly installed kitchen floor was peeling up and scratched up. Also some of the boards were uneven due to the boards settling. We had Tony's Hardwood refinish our kitchen floor with one coat of stain and three coast of water based finish. They also refinished a small area (2 inches) in the dining room where some chemical cleaner had spilled and taken the finish off. The size of the job was small- L-shaped kitchen about 16' x 8'

The carpeting had to go! After looking over Angie's List on the web, I decided Tony's looked like a good place to start. _Estimate_ Tony was was happy to make an appointment that was convenient for me and showed up on-time. He measured my space, asking the sort of details that are important but I had not considered. What to do about baseboards, new floor material choices, closets, orientation of wood strips, fancy details, stain and finishing choices? Tony gave me an estimate and feeling no need to explore alternatives, I scheduled the wood drop-off for the next day and installation after two weeks. The wood arrived and I paid a 50% deposit. The wood needs to sit in the house for 2 weeks to acclimate before installation. (Installation) Again, the installation began on-time. Having done enough projects lately, I really appreciate the promptness and realistic expectations. Tony told us the installation would take about 3 days and another 3 for finishing, and it did. The same two workers did the job throughout the week. They were nice and Tony checked in each day. The work is noisy during removal and installation and then smelly during finishing. So, it was very important that I felt comfortable leaving them to work in my house unsupervised. They did a careful job of keeping things as clean as they could by taping off areas not being worked on. There is a lot of dust from the sanding. If you have oil based finishing done, I would not plan to live in the house for about one week. When small design questions came up or I asked to have something slightly changed, he accommodated my choices and did not add charges. I didn't make any huge changes, but some people will ding you for anything. Basically, he was flexible and reasonable. After the installation and sanding, Tony did the finishing himself. _Conclusion_ In the end, it was done on time with no hassles and looked great.
Description of Work: Removed existing carpeting and installed, sanded, finished new floors on second story. 585 sq ft. 3 bedrooms, 1 hallway with 3/4" x 2-1/4" red oak.

Came next day after telephoning for an estimate. Negotiated a start date after getting all of my estimates in. They needed to start 2 days later than originally negotiated (not a serious problem for me). Sanded the floor, stained it, and put 3 coats of finish on. Were great to work with, did a very good job on the finish, held off until the painter was done and came back for the final coat. Came to about $3500 for approximately 2000 sq ft of flooring + repairs. Everything was very professionally done.

Fantastic! Tony and his crew were efficient, on time, worked very hard and were very neat. Tony's estimate was very competitive and his work was beautiful. He made certain aesthetic suggestions which were just right on and the floor truly transformed the space. We will definitely hire him again!
Description of Work: Tony installed a solid hardwood floor in a garden level space in a Victorian. The space was approximately 550 square feet with 13 steps. The floor was previously carpet over cement. Tony laid a subfloor, a vapor barrier to address potential dampness, and then laid the floor.

Arrived at house for estimate. I informed him that I needed the stain on the floors he would install to match the stain on previously installed doors, using same stain on same type of wood. He said he couldn't match color. That was it. He should not be in the business if he does not know how to stain color match. That's just ridiculous.

Excellent! This was my first experience with a contractor from Angie's List and I couldn't be happier. Tony came out the same afternoon I called, gave me an estimate that I thought was fair (not too cheap, not too expensive) and once I decided on using him, he scheduled the work for the following week. He estimated three days, but the work was completed in two. All throughout, Tony and his crew were extremely professional and courteous. I have had hardwood floors refinished in the past and was not looking forward to the mess. Tony made every attempt to minimize the dust and cleaned up very well afterward - far less messy than I had anticipated. All in all, it was a great experience and I highly recommend Tony for this type of work. I didn't need any repairs done to the original floor, so I cannot comment on this aspect of some refinishing jobs.

I was very satisfied with the work and that he was able to do it as soon as he could. He was paid in full at the completion of the job and for the exact estimated amount.
Description of Work: I requested an estimate for installation of wood floor for my kitchen. It met my budget and schedule because I was in a hurry to get it done. His crew arrived on time and were good about cleaning up afterward. They put up plastic to eliminate dust from spreading to other rooms and furniture. The job was completed in two days. The boss pointed out any nicks or marks that were made on the walls because of equipment. They were minor and rectified with paint touch-up. I found this crew to be courteous and efficient. I also thought that the price was very reasonable. And I would definitely call them again.

Tony knows his business. He does professional quality work and treats his customers with respect. I have to say I was very skeptical that my floors had any chance at all of being restored. Well I was astounded at how well they came out. So just like his ad says, "Old floors look like new." Now when I list my home for sale the Realtor can write, "vintage 50's style home with GLEAMING hardwood floors."
