Renaissance Furniture Restoration is a company specializing in complete antique and modern furniture restoration. We have been serving the San Francisco region since 1993. Among the operations, which we perform, are refinishing, upholstery, caning, bonding, touching-up, carving, veneering, polishing, furniture reproduction and many others. We can restore any object, from ordinary household items to unique collectors' pieces.
Renaissance Furniture Restoration was established after many years of study of both the traditions of master craftsmen of the past and the discoveries of modern technology.
Renaissance Furniture Restoration can restore most objects, including those, which might, at first glance, appears to be beyond restoration. It is for this reason that the motto of our company is "They said it couldn't be done." In restoring objects of value we follow entirely the intent of their original creators.
Boris was a pleasure to work with. He was flexible with delivery time. Completed the work ahead of schedule and did a spectacular job.

This was done quickly and within the time frame given to me.
Description of Work: This gentleman took the arms off of two dining chairs and made them match the other 4 dining chairs in our dining set. It was very nicely done and quickly, too. I would recommend this person if you need a restoration or repair.

We found Boris using yelp.com. He has several good reviews there. I emailed Boris when my husband and I were in the process of purchasing a new home. We wanted to rejuvinate our broken-down and stained chairs before we moved into our new home. I attached photographs of the chairs to the email. Boris replied to my email within a couple of hours. Boris replied to everyone of my emails within a couple of hours. He could not offer an estimate from the photographs, and said he would need to see them in person. We went to his shop before Boris had seen the chairs to pick a fabric. Hint: I would suggest you do not do this unless Boris is familiar with your type of furniture. My husband is a contemporary artist that creates bright, complex paintings from detailed brushstrokes. We are picky about fabric, and we don't like the typical fabrics people pick for furniture. We thought we wanted a faux-leather textile for its longevity, but the selection of fabrics at Boris' store was a disappointment. He has a lot of them, and they probably appeal to the majority of his customers, but it was hard to find something to suit our tastes. All the faux leather textiles were solid colors, and not in a wide palette. We explored using two different colors on a chair to make them more interesting, but when we got home the idea didn't stick. We started shopping for fabrics online. Turns out, there isn't much more to chose from online either in the area of faux leather. We ordered a few swatches from online stores, and those took a few weeks to arrive. Boris was critical of our choices based on how they would work with the chairs. Many of our choices were very stiff, and would make the complex seems look terrible. This is why I recommend you do not try to pick a fabric until Boris' has seen your furniture. After our online swatch selections were rejected, we went back to Boris' store. We opened our minds back up to chosing a woven fabric instead. His selection of patterned fabric was also largely conventional and disappointing. Boris advised us to have more than one choice in mind, because some of his fabric books ware quite old and he wasn't confident our first choice would be available. It was hard to come up with even two we liked, but we did and they were both still available. Once Boris had the fabric and chairs in hand, he completed the complex work very quickly. We had the chairs back in 10 days. The hardest part of my dealings with Boris were around scheduling. I felt like Boris provided information at the last minute; not necessarily when I would liked to have it. I've never had furniture reupholstered, and an overview of the process at the beginning would have been helpful for me to plan. For example, he wanted to charge us for the pick-up and delivery of the chairs. Certainly this is reasonable, but I didn't know there would be a separate charge until he was at our house. Turns out he wasn't there to pick-up the chairs anyway, which I didn't know until he was about to leave without them. Then we had to pay Boris for the fabric before it was ordered. Certainly this is reasonable, but I didn't have this information until we had picked the fabric. I handed him a credit card, but he doesn't take credit cards which I didn't know until I tried to pay him with one. In the end these aggravations were trivial compared with the incredible results and value we received. I would return to Boris again and again with more pieces in the future and I recommend his skills highly. But I'll probably ask my husband to deal with him.
Description of Work: Boris Levitt did a marvelous job reupholstering a pair of modern reclining chairs for my husband and myself. He replaced the springs, padding and the fabric with one of our choice from his selection of swatches. The chairs are Zero Gravity chairs from Relax the Back stores purchased in 2003. The chairs were designed to be reupholstered with a kit, but the manufacturer no longer exists and neither do the kits. This also makes these chairs irreplaceable. The design of the chairs is not simple. Several separate upholstered elements are used on the chair including side panels, arm rests and neck pillow. There are also a lot of curved seams that are crucial to the design aesthetic. What made this job even more complicated was our choice of fabric. We chose a geometric pattern of horizontal and vertical blocks. The blocks are different shades of chocolate. My husband and I could not be more impressed by Boris' impeccable application of the fabric to each chair. The pattern is applied symetrically so that both side panels are the same and both arm rests are the same. We have matching chairs, and Boris applied the fabric the same way on both chairs so they are completely identical. Given the complex design of the chairs, this must have required considerable attention to detail. The new padding is comfortable and has not compromised the back-saving angle that is the major selling point of the chair. The cost of this service is also impressive. We chose an expensive fabric and we needed 12 yards of it. We paid $1050 for the fabric and $800 for each chair. That price included pick-up and delivery. This was a great investment given their original price. Boris has given our favorite chairs another eight years of life.
