It was great! Mike and his team were able to get the work done in a short turn around, deal with San Francisco DBI and we were able to get the certificate of final completion (CFC) with no more delays. The work on my property was high quality and well done! I have some larger projects that I plan to undertake now that this is completed and Mike will be doing those for me in the near future.
Description of Work: I have been working on a condo conversion for my property for almost two years. Once we finally got the stage of determining what needed to be done, Mike Nolan got us the permit. He and his crew fixed my siding and did some other exterior work on my house.

It went very well. Mike and his crew were very professional and kept the construction area tidy and clean. He maintained good communication throughout the project. He discussed/advised in advance what work he will be doing and what the costs are associated so there are no surprises. Overall it was a great pleasure and a positive experience working with MN Construction Inc. I highly recommend them!

The work MN Construction did was some of the best work I've seen. It was well planned, thorough, and practically perfect. Mike (the lead and owner) is a really great guy to work with. He sincerely cares for your home and everything that goes into it. We added a ton of extra work onto the scope as we went b/c everything was going so well. The only room for improvement was in the continual up-keep of change orders. This is the fault of both parties and I think is something that we both will be better about for future projects. But, with that said, you aren't going to find a better general contractor in the bay area. It's pricey, but worth it. Not only has the value of our house gone up with the work that was done, but we get to enjoy it as it continues to increase. Would highly recommend MN Construction for whatever you're planning.

I was lucky enough to find MN Construction here on Angie?s List. After talking to a number of contractors who talked down to me or treated me as if it were a bother to discuss my project it was refreshing to meet Mike. I knew from the moment he walked in my door that he was the right contractor for me. His references and long hard work on my project have all proven me right from our very first interactions. What should have been a straight forward project turned into every kitchen misstep that you might imagine. . . a kitchen designer/cabinet sales person who was less than honest and ordered cabinets that required numerous fixes from Mike, a belligerent structural engineer who wasn?t as familiar with city requirements as he stated, and even a granite countertop manufacturer who kept pushing delivery deadlines and cut my handpick granite wrong. With each new issue, Mike dug in and worked with me to creatively resolve. In the end I have a kitchen that is amazing and contractor that I will work with again and again when the need arises. I?m already thinking about my next project, and I look forward to working with Mike. I know he will do quality work with my needs in mind, not just to make me happy but because he takes pride in doing what he does really well. My overall advice is to remember contractors are busy and MN Construction is no exception. Be prepared. The more time and effort you put into knowing your choices for materials will keep you on track. Mike and Maria are great at helping keep things on track and the more prepared you are the more likely your project is to stay on track! My only regret is that I didn't meet Mike sooner so that we could have avoided some of the not so great service people along the way because each of his providers were much more helpful and service oriented.
Description of Work: MN Construction handled my kitchen remodel - a total gut down to the studs and structural changes removing a load carrying wall. They provide design services as well, but I didn't meet him until I had already commissioned a design.

The job went great. Mike and his crew were easy to work with and very professional. They showed up when scheduled and worked hard. As problems were identified, Mike brought them to my attention and we discussed options and pricing before proceeding. If he thought something in the design might not meet my expectations he told me in advance so I could reconsider. MN Construction self-performed the carpentry, drywall, flooring, tile, painting and most of the plumbing. This was a tough job in an older, high-rise building with small elevators and no parking. As an architect and construction manager, I am very particular about quality and performance and MN Construction did not disappoint me. I have already referred them to a client of mine for another condo remodel.
Description of Work: Complete remodel of a two-bedroom condo. Work included demolition and remodeling of the kitchen and two bathrooms. New flooring, heating, cabinets, counters, plumbing fixtures, light fixtures, tile, and electrical.
If we could give MN an A++++ we would!!! First and foremost, Mike is a man of great integrity--no other character attribute is more important to us than that. Beyond that, he is incredibly accessible and responsive. And from a general contractor skill and knowledge perspective, he is an excellent listener who can transform your requirements/vision into reality--from drafting plans (that meet city permitting level requirements), providing creative feedback and guidance based on his vast experience and ability to understand your tastes, through final execution, he is simply amazing. As with any general contractor, the quality of the overall work product is dependent on his/her team and subcontractors. Mikes team and his subs were all wonderful--when we contrast them to those that we had worked with on previous projects, there is no comparison. For example, we were expecting our second child during the large project that MN did for us--Mike and all of his team and subs were incredibly kind and sensitive to our life situation, ensuring things moved along as quickly as possible (without compromising quality) and, believe it or not, doing little things like spontaneously replacing a stair that was "weak" (and had nothing to do with the project) out of concern that mom and baby might be hurt if it broke. While renovations can be a strain on one's day-to-day life, Mike / MN did all they could to minimize that. In fact, we sincerely missed them after the project was over--beyond being great professionals, Mike and his team are simply great people who are wonderful to chat with. If you can't tell, we'd recommend MN, and especially Mike himself, with great enthusiasm to anyone who wants an incredibly honest, skilled, experienced, creative, hardworking person & team to partner with them in transforming their living space.
Description of Work: Mike and team transformed half of our 2 car garage into an incredible mud room + bonus room + full bath--we use the bonus room as an office, guest room and kid's (and dad's) retreat. Of course, beyond the functional aspect of the renovation, there is the "invisible" aspect--seismic retrofitting, floor lowering & foundation modification, design work, inspector relations, etc. MN did it all!! We also used Mike and team to update electrical elsewhere in our house and some other small, but important-from-a-day-to-day-life house matters.

We had a variety of work required in order to convert our 1908 duplex from a tenancy-in-common into a condo. Mike took the reins, helped us problem solve, and planned a timely, efficient, and affordable plan to do the work. His crew was generous, prompt, friendly, and worked constantly. There was no wasted time, and no extraneous work. Old homes often reveal problems when walls are opened or wires are replaced. Mike was undaunted, took the time to explain any issues that came up, and gave us good advice which helped us make informed decisions. He took care of the permits and worked well the inspectors. The inspections were painless, and I attribute this both to the quality of the workmanship, and to Mike's deep knowledge of the permit process. Promptness and trust are extremely important to us. Mike stuck to schedule, and his crew is highly skilled and trustworthy. MIke is a consummate professional, and I highly recommend MN Construction.

We were first referred to MN Construction from our architect who had stated that his previous clients were extremely pleased with MN Construction's work quality, professionalism and dedication to helping them to achieve their goals. Well, we had the exact same experience. We had a difficult space to work with and MN Construction came in with a design/build expertise that maximized every inch of precious space that we had within our San Francisco home. As with every project, unexpected obstacles came up (unforseen structural issues, opportunities to maximize space, etc.) and Mike worked through every detail with us to meet our goals while still safeguarding our limited budget. The finished space is more than we could have imagined and our families could not be more impressed when they visit. The bathroom wound up being a completely customized bathroom and is something out of a magazine. Truly, the tile work was complicated, detailed and Mike's artistry really showed through...in fact, the tile manufacturer is now featuring the bathroom on their own website and wants to use MN Construction as a preferred contractor for referrals. After our first project, we completely trust Mike and his crew and immediately went into a complete double-paned window replacement throughout the house. Again, they provided custom work and kept the house as clean as possible while we were living in it. We are now embarking on our third project of a bedroom and bathroom remodel and we would not think of utilizing someone else. To find a contractor that you can trust and to truly get involved in the project as if it were their own own house is an impossible find but we found those qualities in Mike, his crew and MN Construction. We HIGHLY recommend MN Construction!

I am delighted with MN Construction. Mike Nolan provides absolutely top-drawer work! He cares a lot about quality and listens to his clients. Mike was on site for virtually all the work. He is knowledgeable and helped me make the many decisions involved. He has great aesthetic and design sense. He and his employees are easy to work with, nice to have around. He knows how to work well with the city regarding permits, inspections, etc. He hires excellent sub-contractors for electric, plumbing, drywall, floor finishing, etc. He understands how to keep an eye on the budget and I feel I've gotten excellent value for the price I paid. I would definitely work with him again on another project.
Description of Work: This was a complete remodel and redesign of a house, down to the studs, and including some exterior siding, roofing and retaining walls. Two separate units were joined with an interior staircase. The layout of both floors was redesigned. New plumbing, electric, heating, insulation, flooring and most of the windows and all the doors replaced and/or relocated. Some very nice custom touches: tile work, fireplace, molding, skylight, sun tunnel. A big job.
I've been a homeowner for more than 30 years in San Francisco, at two different locations (Bernal Hgts and the Richmond) and have had lots of work done at both places in all that time. I have also assisted friends who have gone through remodeling. Mike Nolan of MN Construction, Inc. was the best person/company I've ever dealt with in this regard. He was honest, accurate, punctual, and fast. The quality of work was superb. What I found most impressive--especially in comparison to other contractors--is how he well he managed scheduling for subcontractors. I've never seen such a smooth transition. This guy is incredible.

The minute my partial bathroom remodel was finished I emailed my designer and thanked him not only for the design of my now sleek new bathroom, but for recommending Mike Nolan of NM Construction to do the work. It was a small job, in contractor terms at least, and of the contractors who bid on it, Mike Nolan came through with not only the best bid, he seemed interested in doing it. Once selected, he sent us a start date and timeline. He was here exactly on time, and not just the first day, but every subsequent day as well. They came prepared to work immediately, had the tools, materials and furnishings in hand, laid everything out efficiently, and thoughtfully -- very important since I have a loft and had to have a tile cutter in my living space. They kept everything clean and orderly. Mike listened to the designer, he listened to me, asked intelligent questions, took us both seriously and more over, remembered every detail, even those mentioned in passing. Mike was able to explain issues that arose, treating me like a sentient human being which has not always been the case with contractors. Mike is intelligent, calm and assured. He called my designer when questions arose ?never just winging it. He is an excellent listener, answers his phone, is responsive and honest, and he, and his team, are hard workers, efficient, and clearly take great pride in their work. I liked the guys he had working for him and, more importantly, they liked and respected Mike. He is a true professional. The work was flawless and ended on exactly the day originally specified. I would highly recommend NM Construction, and would use them for any other construction/remodel, not only in my space but in the building I manage. I?d like to add that at no point did I think my project took a back seat to other more extensive projects he had on his plate. He gave as much attention to my ?small? job as a total remodel or ground-up construction project might require.
Description of Work: Bathroom remodel. Demolition of old vanity and sink, laid an all new tile floor, installed new vanity and sink, plumbing, painted the whole bathroom plus attached storage area, some finish carpentry.
We had wanted to fully renovate our kitchen ever since we moved in to our loft. I am a professional designer, so we had very specific ideas about how we wanted the kitchen to look. We rendered a 3D plan of the kitchen in advance. Mike and Jon of MN Construction worked with us through the details before beginning construction. They quickly demonstrated that they understand our vision and aesthetic preferences, and were able to make great suggestions when sufficient details were lacking in our original plan. Mike was fantastic at keeping us up to speed with the progress on the job and talking us through the pros and cons of various construction options so that we could make smart decisions. Mike and Jon are true craftsmen, and the quality of the work is outstanding. The walls and floors in our unit are quite crooked, but somehow we now have an extremely straight and level kitchen that is even better than we originally imagined.
Description of Work: This was a full kitchen demolition and rebuild, including tiling, some electrical and plumbing work, appliance installation, and running speaker wires.

M&N Construction is a great company to work with. They were very involved from the beginning of the project until it was completed. They helped me secure the proper permitting for the job and were very attentive to my needs throughout the entire process. They are very easy to work with and will go above and beyond the normal contracted working hours to make you happy. Their work is top notch (perfectionists). Their whole team is very friendly and professional. They continue to be very responsive to me even though the project was completed months ago. I would recommend M&N Construction for any remodel or new construction.
Description of Work: They transformed an old sun room into an extended living space. They removed a chimney in order to combine the dinning room with the kitchen. Transformed an old storage room into a new master bedroom and master bath. Remodeled two bathrooms. One had a new tub installed. Added a new stairwell that is now covered from the elements. Installed new hardwood floor in master bedroom, kitchen, and dining room.

Mike and John were terrific. We had them complete a major remodel of the back of our 2 unit Victorian. The project ended up being much more significant that we expected due to structural issues we found a long the way. Throughout the project they were very quick to work with us on finding solutions and very knowledgeable in all aspects of construction (structural, carpentry, working with the city, finishes, etc). The team they had was also great, always on time and very good about cleaning up at the end of each day. Overall i could not have been happier with the finished product and they have been very happy to come by and follow up on small odds and ends well after the project has been complete.
Description of Work: Major remodel of our 2 unit Victorian (3 stories). Demoed the entire back of the building, rebuilding everything from the ground up - including moving stairs, opening walls, re-doing kitchens, pouring new foundations, new windows, moving heating systems, new electrical service, etc.

Mike and John did a great job, and their workers are helpful and polite. The subcontractors whom they engaged for our project were punctual and did excellent work. Our old Richmond district house was sagging, and an engineer told us that we needed to build walls in our basement/garage area and replace much of the foundation. Since we would be going to great expense just to get this work done, we decided to add living space at the same time. After a year of working with our architect, engineers, and the City--and interviewing many contractors--we met Mike Nolan and John Lyng of MN Construction. We warned them that we were working with a limited budget, and they put together a realistic proposal. At our first meeting we were impressed by their friendliness and commitment to excellence. Importantly for us, both Mike and John are great with children. Our eight-year-old daughter took to them immediately, and the three of them developed a sweet friendship. This made things easier in a stressful time. The first part of the project was rough: demolition and excavation of the area downstairs. We could not afford to move out during construction, and the guys did their best to make the situation livable. I work at home, and they were careful to communicate with me about power and water shutoffs and the like. The work they did on the foundation was amazing. The houses are very close here in the Richmond, and they managed to build a solid foundation for us without affecting our neighbors. Quite a feat! We needed to be out of the house for about a month during the holidays, and that was very h****** our family. The guys worked through Christmas and New Years to get us back into our home a.s.a.p. When we needed to move back in, they did everything they could to carve out a livable space in our home. Mike and John are punctual and work to schedule, so it was challenging for them to work with a subcontractor who did not seem to share this concern. We wanted to have a radiant heating system installed, but Mike and John could not provide a subcontractor--so we found one on our own. The project would have been completed on schedule if we had not had the radiant system installed. (We love it, though, so it was worth the hassle.) During the next phase--finish work in the new bedroom, bathroom, and laundry--the guys could show their talent for detail work. Mike does beautiful tiling, and John's woodwork is magnificent. Guests to our home always comment on the gorgeous old-fashioned tile floor in our new bathroom and the beautiful design and finish work on our new stairs. We recommend Mike Nolan and John Lyng of MN Construction without reservation. We love our new home--and we didn't go bankrupt paying for it.
Description of Work: We needed major structural work done to our old house, including but not limited to: replacing the foundation along two sides of the building; rebuilding/retrofitting the walls affected; building and finishing a new bedroom, bathroom, and laundry room; remodeling an existing bathroom; building a beautiful new interior staircase; and re-siding and sealing the entire back of the house.
