Jack Thompson

This job required extra problem solving and carpentry skills and we were very happy with the result. Jack came up with a great solution to re- route part of our stairs and railing around a large tree that had grown into the stairs and cracked parts of the stringers. He replaced and fortified the existing stringers as needed, making the stairs stronger than before. The tree is free to move and no longer slowly breaking the stairs every time the wind blows. We found Jack easy to communicate with. He stayed on budget and more than met our expectations. Highly recommended!

Everything went extremely well. Both Jack and Jeff (who did a lot of the work) were helpful, knowledgeable, straightforward, efficient, conscientious, and skilled. During construction, graffiti appeared on the door to our service alley and we subsequently received a notice from the City to remove it. I called Jack to ask what product he would recommend I use to take the graffiti off the door and he told me he had already gone ahead and taken care of it himself. Our project got a bit off schedule because I was not able to get the bathroom tile selected in a timely manner. (My fault, not theirs.) Jack offered to come with me to the tile showroom to expedite things and help me choose an appropriate tile for the installation. I took him up on the offer and was grateful I did because he pointed out a number of considerations I wouldn't have thought of. When the project was complete I offered to pay Jack extra because I had thrown them off schedule, and time is money. But Jack wouldn't accept any extra money from me, saying that he had given me a price for the project and would stick to it. Jack was great to work with and the quality of the work was excellent. I will definitely reach out to him for future work!

Jack is responsive, prompt (a few minutes early, even!), friendly, and trustworthy. His work is tidy and completed efficiently. I trusted him to do some repairs for my mother at her home. He was very flexible about communicating with me via email to coordinate the timing and list of repairs and meeting my mother in person to execute the work. Interacting with two different people didn't create any problems at all. Jack's fantastic.

Working with Jack Thompson was an absolutely great experience. He is very knowledgeable and very professional. Throughout the entire process I could tell he was genuinely concerned with making sure the work was being done correctly and to the highest standard. I have had experiences with other contractors where its obvious they are trying to get the job done as quickly as possible and willing to cut corners. This was not the case with Jack and in fact it was the opposite. A few things came up in the midst of the work that weren't a part of the original estimate but he didn't try and add to the cost. He just took care of it. His cost was competitive with other estimates I received. I would highly recommend Jack Thompson and would certainly hire him again in the future.

Jack was awesome, and I'd recommend him without hesitation to anyone I know needing remodeling work. I was moving into a home that had not been well cared for, with a lot of non-standard elements. The biggest parts of the job were: skim coating all the walls and ceilings and repainting, taking down a large mirror wall, replacing the flooring in two rooms and installing radiant heat, and updating the circuit panel. I also had the fireplace surround replaced, replaced all light fixtures (including outdoor) and all door hardware, and a lot of small things. First: the price was fair. The estimate was about what I expected, and the areas that were higher were well explained and understandable. My quote was done by line item so I could prioritize and remove things to stay within my budget. Second: The work was very high quality and there was great attention to detail. I'm a designer and I sweat the small stuff, and so did Jack. I had flooring quotes that were cheaper because they had shortcuts, Jack made sure everything was done to high professional standards (my heated floors will last) and explained everywhere we had to adjust the plan to get things up to code (had to move the circuit panel out of the closet.) Third: Jack was flexible. I had an unusual situation where the seller didn't move out of my house. This delayed all the work quite a bit and made my own timelines less flexible than I would have liked. Jack was super easy going about it and worked around my crazy schedule to get everything done on time. He helped make what was an incredibly stressful time for me a lot less stressful. Last: Jack's communication is great. This is my first time doing a remodeling project which means I don't know what to expect, and constantly have a lot of questions. Jack answered all of them patiently and made sure I knew what was going on the whole time. Jack was great to work with and I definitely hope to work with him again when I remodel my kitchen and bathrooms. He's easy going and cares about quality. I can't recommend him enough.

From the very first meeting I've been consistently impressed with Jack's depth of knowledge, experience, and professionalism. - His extensive network of vendors in the Bay Area proved very valuable. During the design phase, he identified ways to trim costs and helped us get biggest bang for our buck. - Incredibly responsive and helpful. - Very considerate about HOA rules and requirements. - Meticulously installed, great craftsmanship. Couldn't ask for more. We plan to have him back next year to do our kitchen remodel.

Simply amazing. I really feel like we lucked out by finding and hiring Jack, he is simply awesome to work with. Let me tell you why: - He clearly explains what needs to be done, pricing and timelines and keeps his word! (no blackbox mystery pricing!) - He works round the clock and does a lot of the work himself. We found him working on Friday at 7pm and on Saturday plastering the walls himself to make sure he’d meet the deadline, how amazing is that? - His communication is A+, particularly over text and phone. He is reading and replying to messages all the time. - He goes above and beyond. We had a strange light fixture that we initially wanted replaced and then removed. He did it as an extra at no additional cost. - He is just a cool guy. We were looking to save money, and he totally got that. He gave us options (like doing our own demolition for our tile floor in the kitchen, which we did) and was clear about cost savings of each. He also gave us a bunch of expert advice and friendly encouragement on how to DIY our out-of-budget-for-this-job bathroom tile work. And no, I didn’t know Jack previously. I found him through Angie’s List.

The crew came and did demolition in a day. Poured the concrete foundation for the posts. There was a wait for the inspection. Once completed they were back the following week and the work was done in 5 days! A great crew to work with. Cleaned up and didn't leave a mess at the end of the day. That was refreshing. Very professional group. Would definitely hire them again.

Excellent. Our below grade walls of the house had taken on water and it was decided that a french drain was our best option. Jack gave a fair assessment and was very helpful in answering all questions related to the job. We are very happy with the end result and it was all done on time. In addition, he improved areas (Side gate, yard) that were not in scope that we really appreciated.

Jack was a great contractor to work with and I would recommend him to anyone looking to do a project. San Francisco makes you jump through a lot of hoops to do anything and Jack was able to handle all those details so I didn't have to worry about anything. Most importantly, the quality of the work was very high. It's been a few years since he did the work and there haven't been any defects. He also got the project done on time and on budget. One thing I found very refreshing is that he quoted a price and stuck to it. Even after all the walls were opened up and there were some unexpected issues, he didn't come back with any up-charges or change orders. He clearly baked some contingency funds into his proposal, so when so unexpected things came up, we talked over the options and he was able to handle it without asking for more money. I've worked with other contractors in the past that wanted a change order for every little thing that wasn't in the original proposal and it gets really annoying and expensive. Bottom line, I'd use him again, and I think that's the best review I can give.

Jack has done much work for my family over the years. Including General contracting finish carpentry, gutter work, and more. He always does excellent work.

He came up with creative solutions to challenges, he was responsive to my concerns, he stayed on budget and completed the job on time. how often does that happen with a contractor? Everyone who sees the unit raves about it. I would definitely use Jack again. He displayed the highest level of honesty and integrity and I would highly recommend his services to others.

I could not have asked for better service from Jack. He was clear and thorough in his communications, he was both reasonable and accurate in his estimates (time and money, both) and he answered my questions immediately. Moreover, as someone who doesn't know much about contracting and building, he was patient and offered just the right amount of detail. Jack was generous with his time and extremely transparent with the minor issues that came up. Nothing that came up was particularly unexpected,as he had gone reviewed all the possibilities of difficulties such as more dry rot than expected, the possibility of termites, not passing permitting, etc. We were lucky that most of the things he warned us of were non-issues, but I appreciated his honest approach and detailed discussion of the various ways the project could go. It is also important to note Jack was extremely considerate. He made careful provisions for all the pets, he gave ample notice when he'd be around and when he would need indoor access, and he was always kind and ready to fill me in on details. He was an honest, kind, and pleasant presence to have around for a few weeks; now I have a sturdy, pretty, and legal deck as a souvenir of his stay. I can not recommend Jack highly enough. In fact, I need to contact him myself about another project that has come up. I wouldn't dream of asking someone else first.

When I began my condo conversion with the city of San Francisco they sent out 3 different inspectors that picked over my home and gave me a 10 page list of all the thing they wanted brought up to code. Many of the items listed by the building department seemed insurmountable to me but Jack handled all of them with apparent ease. Jack was also constantly recommending ways to save money or to get a better end product for the same cost. He caught several problems with the plans early on, making changes in the field that avoided what would have costly construction errors. Jack was on top of everything. He navigated threw the inspectors without a hitch and the end product, 3 beautifully restored victorian railroad flats, sold right away for top dollar. I would recommend Jack to anyone who wants a high end renovation for a fair price in San Francisco.
