Description of Work: We have a simple 1300 sq ft gable roof that needed a complete tear-off, possible rafter repair, and renewed stucco where the roof overhang touches the side of the stucco siding. Excelsior whipped the job out in one day with six men. Fast but good work. Excelsior was one of six bids I had. Their bid was in the middle. So why did I have Excelsior do the work? Well, just talking to them. The Company has been around a long time in the family; the Company has union workers that have been with company more than a season or two; and I had a chance to see them in action on another job. I suppose not a heck of a lot to determine the "quality" of their work. In the end, it was just talking to them over the phone a number of times that convinced me to sign on the dotted line. Here's a few thoughts I can give you on roofing in general. When comparing bids look at the details. Are the companies using the same material and performing the same work over the same time period; make certain you are not comparing apples and oranges. If fine carpentry work is required (exposed rafter beams, barge boards, etc), I suggest getting a contractor that specializes in wood working for a living; roofers are apt to be rough carpenters only. Make certain you warn your neighbors about your roofing job; roofers can come early in the morning. And finally, all the bids that I requested were from companies that seemed tops to me; I probably would have found the work from any one of them to be done well. I settled, not on the dollar amount, but on the company, Excelsior, the Company that I felt comfortable from our talks. Good luck. Remember, roofing costs seem, we'll, "through the roof", but there is a good chance the work will last 30yrs with no problems. Money well spent I think.

Description of Work: Caulked the skylight, inspected the roof and painted silver a smaller roof on top of sunroom (maintenance work).
