To keep the budget down, I worked as helper with Chris on some of the project, having a Homeowner's D-I-Y knowledge of simple construction. It was gratifying and enlightening to see his knowledge of carpentry and woodworking, to observe tricks of the trade, and his care in doing the job properly. If there was an aspect to the project he was unfamiliar with, he would research the process, talk to experts, and make recommendations. I especially appreciated his decisions on rental and use of equipment and his management of day laborers. In addition, much of the project was decided on and planned in progress, and his input was essential on figuring out cost, time, and function. After the main project was finished Chris helped us with some finish work in the house, and we plan to hire him for some future renovation projects.
Description of Work: In preparation for remodeling a downstairs room, Chris was involved from start to finish in renovating the backyard and side entrance. This included design and installation of concrete slab and brick pavers, new redwood fencing on property lines and back yard, interior and exterior fill-in of unwanted doorway, design and construction of hallway and under-deck roofing, design and construction of an ornamental entryway roof, installation of a hinged gate and a sliding gate. He was also responsible for selection and delivery of materials, for hiring and overseeing of day laborers when needed, rental of equipment, cleanup and removal of debris.
