Description of Work: He came in to help my son turn the power back on after it tripped and the switching of the fuse box didn't seem to work. He tried it a couple of times, fiddled with it then showed my son how to do it next time---and didn't charge us a thing.

Description of Work: Replaced plug for garbage disposal, when it was turned on it wouldn't turn off. He also installed 3 smoke detectors and replaced 2, which hadn't worked in many years. I don't recall the exact amount I was charged, at the time it seemed reasonable. I don't recall the exact day he was here, I do know it was January 2014.

Description of Work: Install two motion activated lights - one at garage and one at back stairs. I'm an absentee landlord and John and I conversed over phone, text messages and email. Perhaps that is why he took several trips to the job to figure out what to do, which added to the price. I thought that the job could have been done sooner with less back and forth questions between us. The fixtures and installation (in photos)look good and tenants say the lights work well. I would likely hire him again with better communication between us at the beginning.

They have been great! I think their hourly rates are pricey, but they’re worth it. Also, no job is too small for them, which is really nice, and they are prompt.

Since my ceiling fixture EXPLODED, I needed an experienced electrician; Cole Hardware recommended John Peters/Brookline Aries. John returned my voicemail within an hour and said he?d come early the next morning or in the evening after work. After the call I got a confirming email and then a quick reply when I wrote back to make sure he had time for another task I wanted done. He arrived on time and did everything super efficiently. The job (8 separate tasks) took under 1? hours. I never felt John was rushing, he just knows what he?s doing so he can do it quickly. I asked John if he always keeps up this pace. He said he only does two jobs a day like mine and works with some younger guys for bigger jobs. He is fun to talk to, so I did, the entire time he was working. My yacking, I?m sure, led to a glitch in one of the switches which I found the next day. John came over that day to fix it. And his prices are more than fair. Now that I know about him, I will never use another electrician.
Description of Work: John investigated the cause of my ceiling light fixture which had exploded (yes, exploded!). After determining that the wiring was ok and that the problem was in the fixture, he installed my temporary replacement fixture. I had him repair a 3-way switch which only worked as a 1-way switch. Several electricians before him had been unable to fix it and having it work as only a 1-way switch had been a major inconvenience. He installed 3 new smoke detectors after noticing one of my non-functioning smoke detectors dangling from its wires. John installed dimmers on 2 light switches and a new switch for my garbage disposal (another electrician had installed the wrong color and ignored my request to change it).

I did not authorize that he should go out and do the work. He charged me more than he said he had before. He went out and did the work before we discussed how much it was going to cost. I had called him and he wanted to know what the problem was. I was not able to answer all of his questions so I gave him the phone number to my tenant who was there and could answer the questions about the problem. The next thing I know I got a phone call saying he was at the house saying that he finished the work. I hadn't said go ahead and fix it. We hadn't talked about what it was going to cost. It cost more than it was last time. I was not a happy camper. I would suggest people negotiate before hand. He charges a great deal more for after hours work. He doesn't fully disclose what he is going to charge.

Response from Brookline Electric
It was an after hours emergency call-- 6:45 PM. The downstairs power was out and the breaker would not reset. A double 20-20A breaker had melted at the buss bar. The cost was actually $310.00 not $350.00 In order to stay in business you have to charge more for night time calls because of the rush hour traffic on the way and you can't schedule another job when you finish - you have to deadhead back to the shop.

Brookline is now BV Electric. Boris Vidas runs it and his main guy is Tony. They are punctual, responsive, friendly and quickly fix any errors and apologize for the inconvenience. I have used BV for large work and small and will keep calling them back. Brookline was used by our family for decades and Boris does credit to the old firm.

They did a great job. John, the owner was extremely repsonsive. Mario, the worker was great. They didn't cut a lot of holes in our walls - they took their time and did the job right. They were very professional. They are expensive but they do great work. I would use them again and have recommended them to others.
Description of Work: They added electrical lines and phone lines in each bedroom of our house. They also burried our actual co-axle cable as well.

When I had them perform the work a few years ago I was happy with the result. They seemed like a very professional company and the rate was reasonably competitive. But I recently learned that they could have done a much better job for just a little more money (run new circuits instead of ground wire). The quote for the new work was 2-3 times more than what I got from the other electricians I spoke with. Furthermore, I was charged $60 for the visit to collect info for the quote (to be credited to the job if I gave it to them) and I fully expected a thorough analysis of the situation and a solid plan for running the new circuits. I don't feel that I got a solid plan or that it was worth paying the $60 for the visit. The quote included a 20% or so contingency to deal with unknowns and a lot of things were going to be determined when the job started. There were all kinds of extra itemized charges in the quote for travel time, setup, cleanup, etc. and the hourly rate was outrageously high.
Description of Work: Brookline grounded 4 outlets for me. This was done on a time and materials basis. I recently asked them to provide me with a quote for installing lights in closets. I also tried to get them to help solve a problem with the original work they had done since they guaranteed the work. But I really didn't get very far and they were not responsive to that.

At the end of the day, the real issue here was money: the bid from Brookline-Aries was more than three times for the exact same scope of work versus the three other high-quality electricians I interviewed (including the one I ultimately used). Bottom line, their estimate was far from competitive. To be honest, I also didn't exactly click with the representative who visited my house. He was perfectly friendly, but there were about three or four examples of behavior that I considered a bit ''off putting''. For instance, call me crazy, but I don't think it is appropriate for a contractor to touch items in the house that aren't directly related to the project. I was also put-off by comments about my personal effects. Like I said, the most important factor in my decision was gross difference in the estimated cost. But lack of chemistry didn't help. That said, I'm sure they do very good work.
Description of Work: Requested an estimate for a long list of electrical upgrades to my older home.

Owner John Peters provided an overall electrical assessment of the building and worked closely with us throughout the project. His estimate had prices attached to each item and was revised as the work progressed. John was always looking for ways to save us money without compromising the excellent quality of the work. The electrician, Mario, was on time everyday. He did the work carefully and neatly. Maintaining building security during the job was as important to them as it was to us. Both John and Mario patiently answered all our questions and provided clear explanations. The work passed city inspection without problem.
Description of Work: General electrical upgrade of 4-unit apt. Building: Re-wired, converted fuses to circuit breakers, added new grounded plugs, upgraded existing plugs and added smoke detectors.
