The results are in the "Wow!" class. We are completely happy with the results. The craftsman were all prompt, respectful of our home, and well informed professionals. Minor issues with the window instillation were resolved in a reasonable time to our satisfaction. The price was was a good value if you are short on time and looking for hassle free professional work.
Description of Work: The company preformed design, estimating, contracting, and instillation of window replacements, window treatments. They brought together a good team of individual contractors who each in their own right were top notch.

They charge on an hourly basis. They are very professional and provide good service. Sharon was the designer I worked with and she had very good ideas. She immediately could come up with what I was looking for, which was good. They also made recommendations for a lot of really good contractors. They helped me out a lot. I would use them again if I had to.

Mary and Shannon from Style on a Shoestring did a truly amazing, outstanding job. As you can see from the description, the project was quite comprehensive. We started with a blank slate and they were able to transform the house into a home that feels very natural and comfortable for our family. In our initial meeting, they were able to quickly develop a sense of what kind of space my wife and I were aiming for and what our stylistic preferences were. From there, they made many recommendations that made it obvious they are very talented designers with great instincts. Once we got through the design process, they did the actual purchasing, delivery, and installation for all of the furniture and decor. The end result was an absolutely beautiful home. A huge value-add that SOAS brought to the table was the contractor selection and coordination. I found every one of the contractors that they brought in to be excellent. Obviously, SOAS has a stable of subs that they are experienced with and know very well. They made finding and dealing with the contractors really quite easy and stress-free. I found Mary and Shannon to be very professional. They were extremely responsive - I never had to wait long before an email or phone call was answered. They were also always very punctual to meetings, very good about following up on issues, etc. The details of the project were kept very organized, and I would be sent constant updates on the project cost spreadsheet. They had great attitudes and are really nice, down-to-earth people, a real pleasure to work with. We've been living in the house now for a month since they did the bulk of the installation and the house still feels absolutely amazing. I can safely say that hiring SOAS was one of the best things we did in purchasing and prepping our home. We received a huge amount of value for their fee, which we found to be extremely reasonable; even when you take their fee into account, I'm sure we saved money overall. And I can't begin to imagine how much longer the whole process would have taken without their experience and know-how to help us. I will be happily recommending them to my friends and family.
Description of Work: We purchased a home that needed updating and furnishing. Style on a Shoestring helped us with design, selection, purchasing, and contractor management in the following areas - furniture, painting, wood flooring, built-in cabinetry, window treatments, interior plants, art, decor, bedding and linens.

About a year ago, I hired style on a shoestring to help me figure out what furniture to purchase after moving into a new home. I was extremely pleased with their service at that time and since them hired them again to make more suggestions based on the furniture I'd purchased over the year. I find their hourly rate very reasonable and the services pays for itself when you count the availability of discounts on some local retailers like elephants trunk (10%) and if you consider the mistakes in purchasing furniture that I would have made on my own. Tracy is really a pleasure and it is wonderful to work with a designer who is down-to-earth and understands my financial limitations. Once I finish the suggestions she made, I hope to hire her for larger projects.

We're thinking about going with them for a number of projects. For some of the projects, we won't be using them for various reasons. They sent out two people. The woman who runs the show is very high-energy and I think she's a smoker. She wasn't exactly my type. She kept suggesting other projects that I didn't want. The other woman was more client-oriented. I liked her a lot.

Very well. The decorator was always willing to listen and come up with alternative items. I saw no signs of decorator ego here. If an item was not to my liking, it was returned--no questions asked.
Description of Work: I recently painted and reupholstered but needed some professional help in adding that finished look. I was not happy with the furniture arrangement and also needed some final touches such as decor items and accent pillows. I found I was spending a lot of time shopping, buying and returning items that did not quite fit. I called this company and soon after met with two decorators for a free in-home consultation about what could be changed. Vanessa, the lead decorator, was wonderful! I can't say enough about her good ideas, her willingness to try different things, and, most of all, listen to get a sense of what I liked. After, the initial consultation, Vanessa worked out a budget to cover items to purchase and estimated time. She frequently sent me messages with possible items. She, in short, worked very hard to find items to suit my budget and taste. She also did a marvelous job rearranging a very sloppy bookcase.

We found Style on a Shoestring through Angie?s List. We sought design help from a company with consistently glowing Angie?s List recommendations over several years. Selecting Style on a Shoestring was the wisest choice we could have made! We had no idea into what we were getting ourselves, and Tracy and Vanessa made it all happen, involving us to the degree we were comfortable, but firmly running the show. The combination of design expertise plus project management using a group of tried and tested contractors produced excellent results, in a timely manner and within budget. Tracy and Vanessa also strongly urged us to move out during the process ? probably the most valuable guidance we received! It meant the work could be done in different parts of the house at the same time to speed the process. Tracy and Vanessa even helped us in the search for a rental house that would accept our dogs. Many of the contractors are also Angie?s Listers. In addition to doing good work and following a tight schedule, the contractors? desire for repeat business from Style on a Shoestring provided significant extra leverage. The contractors knew each other from previous SOAS jobs and were comfortable working with and around each other in tight spaces under a tight schedule. These contractors are not the cheapest contractors around, but you get what you pay for: they did very good work, did things ?right? and did not cut corners, and worked to a tight schedule. In one case, a check with a major hardware store that also does contracting work showed that the cost was almost the same, but we also received the great pride in craftsmanship that comes with doing work under your own name. We highly recommend Style on a Shoestring for their design expertise, project management skills, and assembly of a team of skilled craftsmen who take pride in their work.
Description of Work: Style on a Shoestring (SOAS) provided complete design services and project management for a major renovation that totally transformed our house into one where visitors step in and proclaim “wow, this is really cool.” First, owner/designer Tracy and designer Vanessa set up an afternoon of meetings with a group of contractors assembled through years of trial and error – contractors who do good work, are reasonably priced, reliable, and would comply with a tight schedule. Contracting would be directly with the contractors, who had no financial linkage to SOAS and with SOAS acting as project manager. The trades included cabinet maker, tiles, electrician, plumber, doors/window, painter, window treatments, closet shelving organizer, etc. We would never have known where to begin, let alone bring such a group together. Tracy and Vanessa exchanged ideas with the contractors – What possibilities are feasible? Will this idea work? How about this one? Tracy then developed a rough budget with costs for each potential component. Then Tracy and Vanessa met with us to review the possibilities. Once a direction and rough budget range was decided, they worked with the contractors to more closely specify the work and refine costs, including consulting with us regarding trade-offs and alternatives, and design versus functionality options and issues. Throughout, they provided design expertise with a flair, including many things we would never have even imagined on our own. When we became overwhelmed with choices for faucets, tile, shower hardware, etc, Tracy and Vanessa would meet us at vendor showrooms, arriving in advance to narrow choices or pointing us in the right direction for internet searches. Once we signed contracts for the various trades, Tracy developed a tightly integrated comprehensive time line – often with multiple trades working at the same time or one right after the other on the same day (made possible by the good working relationships developed with the stable of well-screened contractors.) The work began and Tracy managed the process, checking on progress in person almost daily. Tracy had required a 10% contingency be built into the budget for surprises – there were some, but all were well handled within the contingency by Tracy working with the contractors. We had heard renovation horror stores from friends – months to renovate a bathroom, massive cost overruns. But with Stacy’s management, the work was tightly scheduled to be completed in 30 days: it was completed a day early and within budget. Tracy and Vanessa also selected interior and exterior paint colors and helped us select furnishings from good vendors, keeping in mind the things we had accumulated from 20 years of living overseas. The result is spectacular, transforming a ho-hum little tract house into a wonderful home, rich in design features and a pleasure to live in – we often just look around the house and marvel!

It went terrifically!! Mary Wadsworth and the entire company were exceptional to work with. They used some of the items I had purchased for the design of my condo for resale and they purchased some other items which I paid for. I had the option of refusing any item they purchased but I loved all of them,!! I sold my condo in 2 weeks and all the neighbors who saw it on open house could not believe how beautiful it looked!
Description of Work: I really wanted to put this under Interior Design but I couldn't find it. I hired Mary from Style on a shoestring to help me pick out furniture, paint colors, tile, molding and home staging in preparation for the sale of my condo.
Wow, wow and double wow! I cannot describe how fantastic this company is! We worked with Tracy, the owner and Mary, one of the designers/project managers. We had immensely better service than we thought possible in this day and age. They met with us in Oct. and listened to our plans and our concerns and walked us through the process and what to expect. They never pressured us to move forward and they were always very aware of our budget. In fact they were very respectful of our budget and presented us with many options for everything along a spectrum of costs. They tracked all expenses in a very timely manner and kept us apprised of where we were with the budget at all times. They planned pretty much all the details before work started and all materials were either at the house or ready to be delivered. When everything was set, we moved out and the work took 5-6 weeks until we could move back. We highly recommend moving out if you can. It really, really reduces the stress. It is really hard to see your house in progress as the walls are ripped open and things look damaged. However, if you stay out, when you come home, everything looks perfect. There were minors problems that arose during the remodel (as they always do) and Tracy and Mary informed us immediately and dealt with them immediately, and to our satisfaction. The only part of the remodel that we're not completely satisfied with is the kitchen counter. Their counter guy did not do a great job and was a little funny about trying to add on charges after he bid on the project. Other than the counter guy, every contractor they recommended did a superb job (especially the moulding guy - Tim Larkin - Wow!). When the bulk of the remodel was done, we moved back in and Tracy and Mary took care of any little touch-ups that needed to be done. We were in awe of how our house looked after they did their magic on it (and they're not even done!). We never knew our house could look so beautiful! They not only managed the remodel in an incredibly organized fashion, maintained an incredible eye to detail, but also had incredible talent for design. We'd also like to say something about their responsiveness. We bombarded both Tracy and Mary with emails and phone calls with details and questions. No matter how many or how weird the questions were that we asked, Tracy and Mary always answered them with respect and sensitivity. They always answered our questions and concerns in an incredibly timely manner too. They always seemed to be available! Also, most important of all, Tracy especially did a fabulous job of calming my nerves when I'd freak out about the remodel. It is very easy to become overwhelmed when you make large changes to your house and you're spending large amounts of money. Plus there are so very many details to address and decide on. Tracy and Mary were very good at not overwhelming us and soothing us when we got too stressed. Thank you SOAS!!!!!!
Description of Work: Complete kitchen remodel, new wood floors put in, old wood floors redone, new lighting, new paint, crown moulding and baseboards, window treatments, layout of furniture and art, and in the future will be picking out furniture, rug and decorative items.

I liked them a lot. They did what they said they would do. They were professional and prompt.
Description of Work: They came out and gave me decorating ideas.
Raising three kids had beaten up our home quite a bit. For example, we had re-upholstered our 24-year-old couch some years ago and it was looking shabby again. My wife and I decided it was time to remodel our home. I researched a number of options and decided upon Style On A Shoestring (SOAS). Their business model is different than any of the others we investigated. Most design firms receive a cut from the furnishings and services you buy giving them an incentive to run the bill as high as possible. SOAS charges by the hour but passes the designer discount on to the client. They negotiate diligently with store owners and subcontractors to maximize the amount of savings. This means the client has an advocate in SOAS to keep costs under control which meant a great deal to us. Once we had defined our project with SOAS, they supplied us with a timeline and spending plan. Our project involved a complete makeover of wall, floor and window coverings including crown molding and baseboards and new furniture on the ground floor of our home. The timeline we were given called for our project to last a little over two weeks. There were minor adjustments along the way but everything came together perfectly on the appointed day. The spending plan was updated regularly; I am happy to report our project came in under budget! Our home looks and functions so much better it is hard to describe in words. Our family and friends have been astounded at the improvement too. When I look at the photos of our home before and after the remodel I can t believe the difference. We plan on having the top floor of home remodeled in a couple years and will definitely use SOAS again.
Description of Work: Our project involved a complete makeover of wall, floor and window coverings including crown molding and baseboards and new furniture of the lower floor of our home. The timeline we were given called for our project to last a little over two weeks.

My experience with them so far has been good. The woman seem to be knowledgeable in an area in which I am not. She has come back to do a follow-up for no additional charge and will continue to do so until we find some colors that work.
Description of Work: They are consulting on paint colors for the inside of my house.
The professionals at Style On a Shoestring out did themselves from design concept to completion. I'm glad I left the decorating to real designers. I gave them a budget of what I could spend and they did it!! Our family left the house for the day while Style On a Shoestring did their stuff. We came home and the room was completely transformed!! They did the job on time and under budget!!
Description of Work: I hired Style On a Shoestring to remodel from top to bottom my daughter's bedroom. My daughter had outgrown her toddler bed and "baby room" and was moving up to an older girl bedroom. The room theme was to be a girls' beach room. They did an amazing job from start to finish. The job included laying wood flooring, changing paint colors, new blinds, bed, bedding and all the trimmings to go with it.
