The Buying experience: I had shopped 3 different vendors. Two companies sent out contractors as opposed to actual company representatives. It was clear their knowledge was far shorter than I was comfortable with. For example, the sizing did not make sense and the numbers were presented in a confusing and somewhat misleading manner. HOWEVER, REC Solar was a breath of fresh air. John, the sales guy really knew his stuff. The analysis of our energy use and estimated system performance was clear. We looked at a number of system sizes and opted for a larger system. Because our panels needed to be set on the front of our south-facing house, the look and quality of installation was very important to us. John recommended the Kyocera panels for their great performance and brown/grey color the blended well with our roof. The site assessment is an essential piece to the process. Avoid making other decisions or assumptions about the final configuration until the installation is fully designed as I made an unessary change to the site in anticipation of the panels that was not needed. The Installation Experience: I challenged the installation team to make this their cleanest installation ever. There are no visable conduits thoughout the system so it looks very clean and non-industrial. The installers were very professional and met their promises. It was clear they took pride in their work. Issues, when they came up, were dealt with quickly. System Performance - I have been tracking system performance against the prediction ny REC Solar. Because rebates are based on conservative formulas I would be surprised if a system underperformed expectations. We are getting about 19% better performance than predicted. It sure is fun to see the meter spin backwards. When I wake up and see a sunny day I think, "It's a great day for solar power!"
Description of Work: Installed an 11 kilowatt solar system on our home - 2 inverters and 52 Kyocera panels.

--- Member Comments Continued from previous section: The work continued Tuesday, and they finished mid-day. The city inspector arrived that afternoon to complete the required inspection and certify the installation. Then a drywall man started patching the holes, but some drying time was need before they could finish the surface, so he returned Thursday to finish the job. Since the conduit on the exterior was in my neighbor?s back yard, I requested that they paint it to minimize the impact on my neighbor, which they did. The job was much bigger than originally anticipated by either me or REC. But, they completed the work professionally and politely. The interior was returned to the original condition, and once the paint dried, I couldn?t tell they had made the holes in the wall. The painted exterior conduit looked great, it made them nearly invisible, and my neighbor was satisfied. Despite the extensive work required they embraced the challenge. The final bill was as estimated with no extra charge for the extra materials and work required to complete the job. A couple weeks later I received approval from SDG&E to energize the system. It?s been on for a week now, and I?m very happy.
Description of Work: Information exchange, site evaluation, system design, system installation, arranged city inspection, submitted paperwork for SDG&E approval and the state rebate, patch and paint to recover original condition. --- --- Start 'Member Comments', due to character limitation: I reviewed Solar on Angie’s List and REC was top rated. Researched solar on the web to get smart about products and services. Investigated REC, including BBB, with no bad news found. Contacted REC online. They responded with an email indicating that a local consultant would contact me. The local consultant called me to collect some information and set up an appointment. He never showed and didn’t contact me again. I contacted him, and he apologized and explained his PDA calendar failed to synch and he lost several appointments in his calendar. We rescheduled and he was ahead of schedule and very apologetic. We completed a site survey and he collected more information. He explained that they would work with the HOA to get approval for the installation, but I decided to submit my application to the HOA myself, which went well. We met again to sign the contract. They will submit the paper work for the state rebate, but I will have to claim the federal tax credit on my taxes. The credit and rebate made my cost less than 60% of the contract price. I was told that they will work with the city and power company to get all the approvals and certifications needed to complete the installation. A technician came out to perform a detailed site evaluation and collect information for the system design. After the design was complete they called to arrange for installation and indicated that, while most of the work should be on the exterior, I may need to be present for about a half day to provide access to the attack. Thursday, when the installation team arrived, the 2 panel installers got busy immediately, and the electrician/foreman, using blue prints, walked around the house with me describing what would be done. At one point he asked if the breaker panel was inside, so I showed him where it is, in a closet in the center of the first floor. Apparently this was a surprise and a very unusual situation. They were going to need to run conduit to the panel, which was going to take much more than half a day. The panel installation was completed the first day, but the electrical installation was going to be extensive. They work 4 ten hour days, and don’t work Friday, so the electrician and an apprentice returned Monday. I expected them to arrive at 08:00, but they didn’t get there till 10:00; they said there was a company meeting. They accommodated my desires to run the exterior conduit such that it would be the least visible to me neighbor. They had to run the conduit through a space in the drop ceiling housing furnace venting, and cut some holes to provide access. They explained why it was necessary and apologized for having to do so.

This company seems to do everything right. They were quite competitive in the bidding process, and nearly matched a local startup company in price. Price is not everything though, and I'm happy that I went with REC, even if their backlog delayed installation (the delay turned into a blessing, read on). When REC came to install the panels, they even had a (former) roofer on their crew, so even though they had warmed me in advance that they don't do roof work, they professionally patched my vent holes. Even though I ordered the system in June, because of backlog and hurricanes (parts were delayed) it wasn't operationally ready until October. This delay turned out to be fortunate since Congress renewed the federal solar rebate program without the $2000 cap, at least for systems installed in 2009 rather than 2008. Throughout the delay, REC was good about keeping me informed about progress (or the holdup), and they were just as forthright about recommending that I delay final signoff of the system until 2009. Now the system is on and working as promised, and my electric meter really does spin backwards. In summary, I am pleased with REC for their professional service, their low cost, their responsiveness, their good communication, and especially their excellent staff.

The installers were on time, polite, and professional. Three days were needed to complete the job. There was follow-up by our sales solar energy consultant, Max D. as to how the job was proceeding and what steps were next. He walked up through the entire process. With the completion of our first year on REC Solar, our electric bill was $400 (we do not have central air conditioning). With the second year coming to a close, our bill will be lower, yet just a little over $300 for a 3,400 sq ft house.
Description of Work: Max D, our Solar REC Energy consultant, looked at our past year utility usage and worked out an estimated Annual Electric Bill Savings and an estimate annual solar production, and how many panels were needed given our usage. Sixteen panels were installed on the 2nd story roof of the home where there was the optimum use of sunlight. It took 3 days for the installation and then had to have it approved by SDG & E. REC Solar assisted us in getting a CEC Rebate and showed us what we needed to complete and receive a Federal Tax credit. Before work could be started, we were given a blue print of plans by REC to be submitted to our Association in our subdivision. We also had to contact our neighbors, front, back and sides, and get signatures that they were aware of the solar installation. The installation took place in December 2006 and received a 5-year Warranty for Components and Installation. We had concerns of roof leakage since they were drilling into a concrete roof. But we have had no leakage problems. We interviewed 3 companies, comparing system size, # of panels used, type of panels and inverter used, warranty, and cost. REC was not the least expensive but we know we got the best bang for our buck all things taken into consideration!

There were no bumps in the road nor surprises. The staff from REC Solar acted as a team, their consistency in information provided related to the schedule and installation indicated that their internal communications were superior to most. The three stages, initial estimate, measuring and determining a rooftop layout, and actual installation, were all carried out at an extremely high level of professionalism and in the time specified. Follow up questions were promptly and thoroughly addressed. We plan to use REC if we expand our Solar System in the future.
Description of Work: REC Solar was prompt in responding and providing an estimate for Solar installation. Two other Solar companies failed to show for their appointments to give estimates. They presented us with options based on our annual usage and discussions with us, and recommended the lower costing system. The estimate and installation information were clearly presented and all questions patiently answered.

We first met the REC representative at a home show at the convention center. He was the most professional of the three we talked to. The rep came to our home and discussed the type and size of the system. He later provided an estimate that we accepted. We did not seek estimates from other companies because we felt confident with REC. He then initiated the building permits and the agreement with SDG&E. The materials were delivered to our home and within a couple of weeks the system was installed. The installation crew was skilled and professional. They work for REC and all they do is solar installations. They improved the proposed layout by moving a few of the panels to avoid shade from one of our trees. They were also very responsive to a request for a change in the conduit routing in the garage. The building inspector noted that they used higher quality conduit than required. They have been helpful and responsive to all our questions regarding system operation and cleaning of the panels. All elements of our experience have been very positive.
Description of Work: REC designed and installed a photo voltaic system for our home. They did the research to size the system, secured the building permits, and installed the system on our roof. They instructed us on its operation and showed us how to keep track of its production. They handled all of the paperwork with SDG&E and the state rebate program.

I am a licensed General Contractor. I met this company on a commercial project and was extremely impressed with their knowledge, not only of their systems but also what is happening on rebates, incentives, and how to maximize return on investment. REC Solar is not a new company, they have a solid reputation and will be around for a long time. This was very important as to why I chose them. These guys were great. I was looking for the best return on investment for my money. While I like being green it was more important to get a good return. My system does not offset my entire bill. What it does is it lowers my tiered rate to the lowest tier which is about 1/2 of the highest tier. This is called peak shaving. I maximized my savings (The amount I pay to SDG&E) per kilowatt of solar produced. With the help of my salesman we also optimized the solar system in order to produce the most power with the least expense. So far my system has been running 5 months and I anticipate over 8% return on my investment and that is after taxes. This will go up as SDG&E raises rates. After the initial design was done I requested the panels be moved to the other end of the roof for aesthetic reasons. They did this and also ran their conduit as I directed so that is would not be as noticeable. They will listen and work with you, but you need to consider this prior to start of installation. The 1st day of installation the installer showed up about 30 minutes late due to traffic but that is well within my tolerable limits as a contractor. They didn't need me there anyhow. The installers were on auto pilot and went to work finishing on time. They even replaced some extra roof tiles at no extra charge. SDG&E approved my system promptly and 8 calender days after completion I was on line. They handled all the paperwork from the contract, providing certificates of insurance, obtaining permits, getting SDG&E approvals, and handling rebates. These guys exceeded my expectations.
Description of Work: This was a design build 3 KW solar system. Included design and obtaining permits, installation of 16 solar panels, conduit, wire, inverter, and tie into the house electrical panel. Coordinated city inspections, SDG&E approvals, and rebates.

REC Solar is a top notch company. We first talked to their salespeople at a booth they had at the Carlsbad Costco. They were extremely knowledgeable and very professional. They described the pros and cons of a solar electric system and broke down all of the costs and the rebates that were available to offset some of the upfront cost of a system. Once we made the decision to buy a solar power system, the design and quotation process went along reasonably smoothly. They handled all of the permitting with the city and all other paperwork with SDG&E so the system could be hooked up to the power grid. The purchase of the hardware (solar panels, inverter) was through Costco and we had to actually go to Costco, order the equipment and pay Costco. The hardware was delivered to our house and then we worked with REC to set up the installation dates. The REC Solar craftsmen who did the installation were punctual, they always acted very professionally and they cleaned up at the end of each work day. When the installation by REC Solar was complete (it was completed within the agreed upon schedule) the REC Solar people came and thoroughly explained the operation of the system. The one downside to the whole experience was dealing with SDG&E - it took them 30 days to come and inspect the system after the completion of installation so we could actually begin using it. I was very pleased in all my dealings with REC Solar personnel and I would rate them as an outstanding company that delivers what they promise and in the time frame agreed upon.
Description of Work: Installed 24 solar panels on our roof, installed inverter and connected system to electrical grid.

I originally met with the REC sales representative and provided him with recent utility bills showing my usage. About a week later the representative gave me a written projection showing the size of the system they recommended and what my costs would be to purchase the system (including any current government subsidies and credits) and the amount of electricity the system was projected to generate. Once I decided to move forward with the purchase, the company's engineer called me and arranged a date to inspect my residence to inform me of any issues I might have with maximizing the benefit of the system I was purchasing. The engineer then submitted the drawings required by the City of San Diego to the building department and a permit was issued about 2 weeks later. My installation was scheduled for the following week. The installers were both very professional and cleaned up all areas of work before they left my project each day. Once everything was done and running, there was no sign that any construction work had been performed. The best part or the project was the entire process from beginning to end took only about 4 weeks. I have recommended REC Solar to several of my friends and business associates.
Description of Work: REC Solar installed a solar electric system on my residence. This included the solar panels on the roof, the DC/AC converter equipment and the monitoring equipment. Every person I worked with at REC (Sales Rep, Engineer and Installation Crew) was very courteous and always arrived and completed the work at their scheduled time. The amazing thing to me was all I had to do was write the check. Their staff took care of all city permits and all contact with the local utility company. The whole process was painless and the system works just as well as promised prior to my purchase. I would highly recommend them to anybody considering installation of a solar electric system.

I am waiting until January to activate the system for tax reasons, but I have been very happy with the installation. They were great, from the initial quoting procedure throughout the completion of the work. We get a state tax refund for solar energy, and they actually filed the paperwork themselves and took the price off of the price of work. They also worked with my homeowners association. I did not compare prices, but I really appreciated that they handled the state refund for me, and I was happy with their service.

It was an amazing experience. Everything happened on schedule. The consultant was clear and concise, never pushy, and answered all my questions in an easily digestible way. The project manager contacted me within estimated time-frame and worked with my scheduling particulars. The installers were clean, polite, and respectful, and treated my house with the utmost care. On the whole, I can say that I have never had a contractor experience that was as smooth and painless as this one. Thank you REC!

We are extremely pleased and have encouraged others to save money and also help the environment. Our electric bills were $400.00 a month and now our largest bill to date is $2.50. The solar panels are very thin and unobtrusive. With the rebates and savings if we had financed this, we would have paid the panels off in 8.5 years and they have an over 25 year life span. I would highly recommend this company, they are courteous, responsible, informative and service oriented.
Description of Work: An amazing presentation on the savings solar can provide to my pocketbook and to the environment. Installation was hassle free and very professionally done with engineers and installers making sure all went well. The panels are unobtrusive and not seen easily from our street. REC's representative was here to meet with the inspectors and followed up to be sure we were receiving our rebates and credits with Edison. Max Dworkin ( our salesman) REC's rep. followed up in person and by phone for the following few months to make sure all was running smoothly.
