In the middle of having my flooring installed, we discovered that I had asbestos in my kitchen and bathroom- the flooring installers walked out of the job immediately. I had 3 companies come and give me bids. San Diego Abatement Services was the most professional and knowledgeable. They scheduled the job the day after I called. They were polite, efficient, and did exactly what they promised to do. They were not the least expensive- but my confidence in a perfect job and the safety of my home was more important. They sent me the certificate of a clean air test so I can now finish my floors!

Both the person initially meeting with me to provide a quote and the workers that subsequently did the removal and disposal of the textured ceiling materials arrived on time as scheduled. The removal crew worked quickly and did a great job. They cleaned up upon completion and there are no negatives to report. Price was competitive and their ability to perform the task without delay was appreciated.

After receiving three quotes from various companies, we decided to hire San Diego Abatement Services. They came in and did a wonderful job accommodating my elderly parents, explaining what needed to be done and were professional in handling all aspects of the job. My parents are very pleased with their services and will hire them again to finish the rest of the house.

Response from San Diego Abatement Services
Mr. [member name remove], San Diego Painting and Abatement does free onsite estimates every day on request and only provides a general price over the phone when it is requested.
From the start, it went great! My sister and I were trying to prepare our mother's home (built in the late 60's) for sale. Our biggest concerns were the popcorn ceilings (with asbestos), the old wallpaper and half-wall wood siding in a very large family room, and the dormers at the exterior roof- height that were in serious need of repair and paint. About a week prior, we contacted apx. seven contractors through various sources. Of the seven, three responded and two showed up to give an estimate. San Diego Abatement Services was the first to respond within an hour or so of my first request through Angie's list. An appointment was made to meet with Shawn at a time mutually convenient. In the meantime, we met with the other company which only did the removal of the asbestos popcorn ceilings but none of the repair or painting, which would have to have been done by an outside contractor. His bid was $3700. We were concerned because we were having trouble getting responses from contractors we had called and were getting anxious about this whole process and the amount of time it might take. When Shawn from San Diego Abatement Services arrived, he alleviated all our stress!! Not only do they do the removal and repair and painting of the ceilings, (for our sq. footage, apx. $2700), but other things we needed to do as well. They were available within the week to do the job and by the following week we were done! While some items seemed a bit high in price (lights), others were low and, in all, we think it all got done at a reasonable price. Being able to have so much taken care of by the same company--and done well--is a difficult commodity to put a price-tag on. There were a few times when I questioned how something was being done or was not getting done and with a quick phone call, to Hope, their great and responsive person back at the office, we were put in touch with Shawn or one of the other supervisors who made sure we were happy with the results or we came to an agreement on how to resolve the issue. The house just went on the market and the feedback from buyers and brokers is that the house looks great - and it does! My sister and I absolutely recommend San Diego Abatement Services without reservation!

It's a pleasure that they were honest and polite. They did my porch and ceiling and it was a great job. They were more complete company so they did everything the abatement and testing. They were very responsive and punctual. I had one little thing which I guess it's very typical because I could see some of the cracks and they say they change the taping that they used so they came back immediately and did it.

This September we replaced all the carpet in our house with hardwood floors. In two rooms, there was old tile under the carpet, held down by black mastic. From the age of the house and the dimensions of the tiles, we suspected they contained asbestos. Since we needed the floors levelled to install, we called San Diego Abatement. They were able to fit our 1 day job in on the first day the floor was accessible, and gave me an over-the-phone guesstimate of $900. So, when their estimator arrived, I did not hand him the Angie's List coupon for jobs over $1500. We learned on-site that the over-the-phone guess did not include complete removal, only tile removal, scraping of the mastic, and encapsulation. Since our floorers needed to grind the concrete, we opted for full removal, another $400. With the $250 for third-party verification, this brought us over $1500. Since we hadn't presented the coupon to begin with, they only gave us $50 off, not $100. We had the abatement done, which did only take the one day, followed by the air clearance the next day. I assumed that when the clearance came through, San Diego Abatement would call me with the results, and schedule a return visit to tear down their containment, but rather I had to call them. The workman removed the plastic, and lots of paint from our walls and doorways in the process. I suspect that if the company had more competition for abatement business, or were not also a painting company, they might have been more careful. I then went in for a visual inspection. When I pointed to dark liquid that had collected in divots in the concrete, then fellow's response was "The clearance says we passed." When pressed further, he said, "You better ask all your questions now, because I'm not coming back." Professional he was not. In the end, we and our flooring contractors were satisfied that the asbestos had been removed, so yes, they did do the job. But in the unlikely event I need asbestos abatement again, I will do everything I can to get the job done right without involving this company.
Description of Work: San Diego Abatement removed 9" tile, probably containing asbestos, and underlying mastic from floor of two rooms so that our flooring project could proceed.

I chose this company due to the great reviews on Angie's list. The estimator was pleasant although he ran almost an hour late for our appt. He beat the other price quote that I received, so I signed the contract and indicated my desired timeline which was a pretty big rush since I needed to get the job done so I could re-carpet the condo and move in on schedule to coordinate with the buyers of my home moving in there. I didn't have any flexibility on any of these dates. There were numerous mixups in the office and in the field. I have worked in many offices myself and realize that communication often leaves a lot to be desired. It seemed to me that they operated in an "ER" fashion, that no one read the contract, change orders or my emails and they were all just "fighting fires" down there all the time. Somehow it all got done, and everyone I dealt with was very nice, with the exception of one of the young kids they had on the early demo phase of the job, who flushed two pieces of paper towel down my hall bathroom commode, almost overflowing the commode on to my wood floors. I noticed this piece of paper towel and was able to shut off the water b4 it overflowed, and remove it, but who could be so careless? I will say that they did finish the job on time, and the actual paint job was excellent. I was very pleased with the actual work, although the logistics and coordination of the job, not so much.

For a large project involving several teams, the work went very smoothly, and was completed to my satisfaction. The workers were punctual, professional, and tidied up after their work. The project manager was very responsive and easily reachable. The coordination between the different work crews was seamless. This company even voluntarily applied a second coat of paint without additional charge to three of our rooms without our specific request as the single coat of paint did not meet their own high standards. Our only major issue was that we were out of our house for seven days instead of the anticipated three days. Overall, I am extremely pleased by the quality of work done by San Diego Painting and Abatement.

Workers were punctual, organized, professional, courteous and honest. They came with all the materials needed to do the job. They returned promptly when an additional problem popped up. There appeared to be great camaraderie amongst the crew.
Description of Work: Removed and cleaned ceiling and floor throughout the house containing asbestos. Painted ceiling. Built an entry door in hallway into attic and closed off one in closet.
I first found this company in the Buy 1 Get 1 Free catalog that comes in the mail regularly. I called to get an estimate and Marc came out. He gave an overview of the process, and took a sample of my popcorn ceilings in case I wanted to move forward with them for the work. They are required to test the popcorn before doing any work to see if it contains asbestos since my house was built in 1976. He soon provided estimates with and without asbestos via email (April 18). That same day I followed up with a few questions included what can lights they planned to use and what they looked like. I was told they are 5" lights ELCO brand and I could find them on the Home Depot web site. I did a search online and Home Depot does not sell ELCO. I decided to move forward anyway, and since Marc had a sample of my ceiling we were able to get it tested and had the negative asbestos results on April 19. With the negative results, I was able to be scheduled for the work to begin Monday, April 29. April 19th later that day I sent another email to Marc saying I would like to see what the can lights will look like. Tuesday, April 23rd I sent a follow up email to Marc again asking about the can lights. On Wednesday he pointed me to the ELCO web site. For a non-electrician and non-recessed lighting expert, this did not help me see what they priced out for me in the estimate. I replied to let him know this did not help me either. Friday, April 26, I called Marc directly to ask about the lights. I described to him what I was looking for and he made a change order for the gimbal style recessed light trims. This was approved on Monday, April 29. When I was put onto the schedule, I was told it would be 4 days of work: Monday ceilings scraped, Tuesday texture applied, Wednesday texture dries, Thursday painting is done. I said I had electrical too, and she wasn't real sure how that would fall in, but thought Tuesday morning the electrical would be done and Tuesday and Wednesday would be texturing putting painting on Friday. But for sure they would be done Friday. She said they would arrive on Monday between 8-930 AM. She also said a supervisor would be there and I could leave my key with them and it would be kept overnight safe in their office each evening. On Monday, they arrived about 8:45 AM. No one mentioned anything about a key and since I was heading out for work, I left a key with the workers in case they left for lunch. I returned home early enough so they would still be there so they wouldn't have to deal with my key. Also, this day I called the office to find out when the electrician was coming to work on the lights. Since there was so much confusion around them, I wanted to be home. I did not receive a call back. One hall closet was forgotten on Monday and was not scraped. It was scraped and textured on Wednesday. All but two rooms had the texturing done this first day as well. I also expecting a mess after the ceiling scrapes but didn't notice any dust/mess at all. They did vacuum up after each days work, Tuesday the electrician arrived about 8:30 AM and started work right away. Later that morning I asked to see the gimbal style lights I had requested and approved a change order for. He didn't know anything about a change order and just had their standard lights. Their supplier could get them but they would have to be ordered and that would take time. With all the frustrations on the lights I decided to go to Home Depot and buy my own recessed light trims for the electrician to install. This ensured I would get what I wanted. However, it was frustrating to have to leave work to make this shopping trip at the very last minute. Wednesday, a worker returned to do the remaining texturing. Thursday the texture was drying. Friday, two painters arrived and painted all the ceilings. However, when I returned home, the job was not complete. Even though I was told multiple times the job would be complete on Friday, they left saying someone would return on Monday to do final touch ups. I called to schedule a time to do this and was told someone would come on Monday between 12-2. On Monday it was 2pm and no one had arrived. I called and luckily they sent out two people to finish up the last items. Bottom line: The workers were very kind and professional, the work quality was great, but the organization of the company seems to be lacking. If you can deal with not knowing the schedule, or having a changing schedule then this company will do a fine job. Also, if you are getting lighting completed, know exactly what you are getting early on.
Description of Work: Popcorn ceilings scraped, textured and painted. Recessed lighting added in the hall where two lights previously existed, and also 4 new recessed lights added in living room on vaulted ceiling. Acoustic ceiling was tested AND DID NOT CONTAIN ASBESTOS.

Everything went perfectly well. Workers arrived as scheduled, did the job and cleaned up.
Description of Work: Ceiling scraped and removal of popcorn ceiling in the entire house; texture applied - 2 bedrooms, living room, hallway, closet. Flourescent lighting removed in kitchen and replaced with 4 can lights. Ceiling retextured.
We used them and it worked just fine. They were good and quite efficient. I think it worked out quite well and it was a pretty big job. The price was medium-high so it wasn't a real bargain, but they were very professional so I have no real complaints. Plus, if you have any questions they answer them.

We called and immediately got someone onsite to assess the job. We received a proposal the next day, and were able to schedule the removal within a few days. This was very beneficial since we were on a tight timeline. They completed the work in two days as promised. When we got back in the house to inspect the results was were things started to not go as smoothly. There were many damaged sections of the ceiling from the scraping. This might be normal for acoustic ceiling removal, but there were some really large gauges. There also seemed to be some acoustic ceiling debris left over, even though they were supposed to dispose of everything. And one section of tape and plastic was left onsite.
Description of Work: They performed an asbestos abatement by removing approximately 1600 sq ft of acoustic ceiling.

Response from San Diego Abatement Services
We can confirm the some gouges are common after an acoustic removal. This is especially true after an asbestos acoustic removal because we must make sure all the material is completely removed. Many customers hire us to re texture the ceiling afterwards as well, this is when we repair the ceiling and gouges from the removal process. We are very meticulous about setting up containment and checking the job site before we leave, but of course there is always the possibility for small mistakes. Had we been informed of the acoustic debris, or the small section of plastic that was left behind, we would have gladly sent a crew out to HEPA vacuum and double check the property.
It went very well. Shawn worked with us in getting us back in the house early. We would highly recommend San Diego Painting for asbestos popcorn ceiling removal work.
Description of Work: Shawn's crew did an excellent job. Services performed were for asbestos popcorn ceiling removal. Others told us that we would have to remove all of our furniture (including a baby grand piano). We left the house for several days so that they could perform the work. The cost included removal, retexture, paint, and installation of several LED recessed lights. They were significantly less expensive than other quotes I received.

I accepted the written proposal by email. Scheduling the appointment was very easy and the Office Manager was very helpful. The single workman arrived on-time and was friendly and efficient. My attic has a folding stairway that drops from the ceiling in the front hall, about eight feet from the front door. The workman esablished a containment area in the hall with plastic draped over the folding stairway, the walls and the carpet. The containment area did not extend to the front door. I was satisfied that containment was adequate under the circumstances. The workman wore complete disposable coveralls, paper shoe covers, and a half-mask with what appeared to be HEPA filters. He removed the shoe covers and mask each time before leaving the containment area. The estimate stated that they would 'set-up areas under negative pressure' which was not done (possibly because this work was done in the attic). The estimate stated that the asbestos would be removed wet. I could not easily verify this and the material I saw may not have been wetted prior to removal because it was very difficult to tell through the clear but thick plastic bag material. The asbestos material was removed from the ductwork in the attic and was placed in bags prior to removal from the attic. All steel ductwork material was removed from the attic to the truck in heavy plastic material. He used a HEPA vacuum to cleanup the hallway after removing the containment materials (although I was satisfied that the containment area was sufficient to make this unnecesary). I was told that my original estimate of the total length of ductwork to be removed was inaccurate (my estimate was 50 ft. He removed closer to 100 ft). This was not an issue as I was previously assured that the price would not change, unless I decided to have them remove the fiberglass insulation in the attic in addition to the duct work. I was assured that this was not necessary. The entire job was complete in three hours, much faster than the full day I expected. I paid by check and received a receipt by email the following week, without any issues.Overall I was satisfied with the level of service and the final result and I would do business with them again, being very careful to understand the procedure they would follow and anything that might affect the price after the initial estimate.
Description of Work: San Diego Painting (also doing business as San Diego Abatement Services) performed asbestos ductwork removal in my 1938 Spanish-style single family residence. Before contacting San Diego Painting I called the Miramar landfill and spoke directly with the a member of the harzardous waste enforcement department who confirmed that they do not accept friable asbestos waste in concentrations greater than 3% (or was it 1%?) of the total disposed waste. They encouraged me to have the material tested, which I did not do because visual inspection of my ductwork by several heating contractors confirmed that the material in my attic was definitely friable asbestos of a type that requires professional removal. San Diego Painting gave me a fixed price on the phone for attic ductwork removal and I was told that physical inspection of the site was not necessary because I was basically paying the maximum price for the removal service I needed. I understood that the job would take one full day. When I received the written estimate by email it included the required option to purchase a third-party "Air Clearance" certificate. I spoke with the owner of San Diego Painting about this certificate and was told that Air Clearance certificates were not done for attic work, a statement that I did not challenge or verify.

The estimator visited us and provided an estimate on a Friday and the work started on the next Monday and was completed by Wednesday, which was what the estimator said. The workmen arrived punctually, performed the work, and locked the doors when they left for the day. The result was good and the company answered any questions over the phone. There were only two small issues: 1) the workmen were supposed to put back the closet doors after finishing but did not do so (the company offered to send someone out to do that after I called them about it but I had already done so myself), and 2) they did not offer any color for the ceiling other than white. The workmen also left some plastic cover material but no complaints there since I could use the stuff.
Description of Work: Scrapped the asbestos popcorn ceiling of the master bedroom, one other bedroom, and 6 closets (total 400-500 sq ft), and then textured and painted the scrapped ceilings.
