Terry did an excellent job in laying this wall out. He arrived a little after 6a.m. and left about 4 p.m. He tied in the new wall to the original wall with rebar in both the foundation and blocks and used 220 ft of rebar both vertically and horizontally in the new wall, waterproofed the back of the wall and back filled it with gravel, filled the blocks with cement by hand so I did not have to pay $200-$250 for a cement pump. This wall is not going anywhere! Good guy and professional with his work. He will not take shortcuts, it's do it right or not at all. That is what I was looking for in a contractor. Most of the cost was for materials which you pay for directly to the supplier He orders all the materials and is accurate on the correct amount.
Description of Work: I needed an existing retaining wall extended out another 19ft.

Terry was very professional and started and completed the job on time. He cleaned the entire property, using a rented Bobcat to dispose of the trash he had collected.
Description of Work: He installed a gravel driveway/parking area in front of a pre-fab home. He also put in flagstone steps and graded the area for proper water run off.

I cannot say enough good things about Terry. He was punctual, extremely courteous, and his work was outstanding. On top of that, Terry ensured that the tree service folks we had hired did what we had asked of them. That may sound weird, but we were unable to be home while the tree guys were there, and Terry was aware of what we asked of them, plus he happened to be there while they were removing our trees. To say that Terry is incredibly conscientious is an understatement - he's a perfectionist, and I really appreciate that in a mason. He will be back for some more concrete work when we're ready because his bid was very fair, and his work blew us away. He's OUTSTANDING!

To say we were satisfied with Terry's work would be a gross understatement. After requesting bids from about a half a dozen companies on Angie's list(only have responded by the way), Terry promptly reached out to confirm details of the job and came by the next day to see the site, and provided a very reasonable and detailed estimate. Terry was back on site and starting the job two days later. Terry is a "by the book" type of contractor, which I certainly appreciate as a homeowner and paying customer. Because he focuses on quality and doing it right, he saved us from going against a local easement that might have otherwise been a challenge in the future. There were also little things along the way that he did on his own to ensure the job was done right that I think other contractors might not have, including cutting out existing concrete and replacing it at the proper pitch-without raising the price. Or when he came back for final touches and noticed a paver that was broken and replaced it- something we would not have likely noticed. From beginning to end, the job took 3 and a half days and we couldn't be happier with the results.

I can't thank Terry enough for his service. From the start he returned my call same day. He also came out that week to check out the potential project. What I really appreciate is his honesty and the fact that he breaks down exactly where your money is going to be spent. He showed up everyday early in the morning to get started and cleaned up before he left. Very professional, very reliable, and absolutely trustworthy. Takes pride in his work and does the job right! Can't wait for the next project!

Great!!! Owner, Terry Thiel on another job, but referred me to Jim Metzger who came out and did an excellent job in repairing the brick on my fireplace. Mr. Metzger was very courteous and professional, came out originally to view what needed to be completed, purchased the product and started early the next day. I have other work which will need to be completed in a few months, and will definitely contact Mr. Thiel and Mr. Metzger for this.

Everything went went perfect, but the one thing they did wrong was I wanted the concrete to flush with the existing dirt but he didn't do that, he said we shouldn't do it. We ended up having to do that part ourselves which cost us about $600 and several days of work which was a backbreaking job. But the rest of the job was perfect.

As many of the past reviewers, I found Terry to be extremely professional and knowledgeable. His work ethic is outstanding. He was on the job between 6 and 6:30 each morning and I never saw him stop. The walkway was beautifully designed and constructed. I paid for the materials directly to the suppliers which meant that there was no markup. I will use him again for any project that requires his skills and would strongly recommend him to anyone.

If you want the short of it, here is what you need to know about Terry: * He is a Git-R-Done kind of guy. He's very motivated and hard working. * He was very polite on the phone and when we met in-person. * He was very honest and I feel like I received very fair pricing for the job. (In general he seems like he wants to do the right thing). Keep reading... I originally asked Terry out to give me an estimate on replacing an old wooden retaining and quot;walland quot; with a block and mortar one. He was honest and told me that a) it would be cost prohibitive to put a proper wall in, b) repairing the existing one was the better option since it wasn't retaining much - just holding some fill dirt in-place. His estimate to do the block wall, if I really wanted to go that route, was in-line with other contractors who gave me the same opinions he did. All of them told me to rebuild the wooden wall. During the estimate meeting, I told Terry what my plans with the back yard were, and he offered to do the demo - something I was interested in doing anyhow. His prices seemed fair, and he was ready to get started within days. He even provided me with a very reasonably priced tree service that could take care of a large Mexican fan palm that had to be dealt with first. Furthermore, Terry contacted the owner of the tree service to make sure I was well taken care of and that there wouldn't be any hold-ups. Again, the tree service was the least expensive one I had requested estimates for earlier in the year. Terry has great connections. The demo went great! He brought out a colleague with an excavator, bobcat, and a 10-wheeler to do the work. Between the two of them (and a bit of help from the colleague's son), they were able to do the demo, make 3 dump runs, and clean up (thoroughly!) in one day. If I ever needed another yard demo, I'd call him again in a heartbeat. I also wouldn't hesitate to call him for any other masonry work I may need help with.
Description of Work: The short of it, I had Terry out for an estimate on a wall, but ended up hiring him to do the demo in my back yard, including haul-out and grading. (my listed price doesn't reflect dump fees).

I called him several times to come out for an estimate. When he finally showed, he made issue or was negative about everything. The job required too much fill, too much grading, too complicated, etc. Maybe it was too small a job (about 200 square feet). Guess he didn't want the job, but I don't really know why. It was very disappointing. A little more honesty would have been appreciated. I am becoming very disappointed in Angie's listings so far and/or in concrete contractors. A real bunch of characters and prima donnas all in all.

I found Terry to be very much like many other ratings for Midnight Masonry. He is responsive, professional, very punctual, extremely knowledgeable, efficient, and a consultant throughout the job. I called him one afternoon and he called me back within a few hours. We scheduled a time for him to see the yard later in the week. He got back to me later that day with a full quote, including materials and delivery, and excavator rental. We worked on some details via phone over the next few days and then set a start date for the following week. He ordered all materials and had me pay the vendors (RCP and BJs rental) directly so there was no contractor mark up; in fact, he had them charge me his contractor price! He showed up before 6am on the first day and had all of his equipment laid out in the back yard before I was even downstairs to meet with him. He worked non-stop each day (3-day job), completing the planned work for the day and then cleaning everything up. The wall looks great and is very straight. I am very happy with the work done and will call Terry again when we are ready to pour a new patio.

Terry is an incredibly hard worker, he is punctual and customer service driven. I had what I thought would be a lot of work and Terry methodically worked through it. He is able to accomplish more with his nose to the grindstone work ethic than a crew of men. Terry shows up when he says he will and works, non-stop until everything he has allocated for the day is complete. I had a slab of concrete that was pulling away from my pool and I wanted to have it replaced and extended. The slab was about 40 feet long and about 4 feet wide and what we later found out about 5 inches thick. It had no rebar and was starting to crack. I explained to terry what I wanted and he came out in the next couple days he measured the existing area and I explained how I wanted it modified and he took the measurements. New dimensions were going to be about 55 feet long and 14 feet wide, and still about 5 inches thick, He made suggestions on how to keep the concrete from pulling away from the pool in the future and decided to dig a necessary footer, since the existing retaining wall behind this area seems to be insufficient and to short. The first day Saturday Jan 5, Terry showed up in the early morning eager to work and laid out the tools he would need for the day and got to work. He destroyed the existing slab and got it into my truck to take it to the dump, 4 trips - lots of concrete. He took extreme care since it was by the pool and once that was done he dug and leveled out the base and dug the footer. The next work day Monday Jan 7, Terry showed up in the early morning ready to go and came prepared to put down the forms and all of the rebar. Terry knocked it out and you could tell it was done with meticulous detail in mind. He was like a machine wire tying all of the rebar together and used some brick I had laying around to make sure it sat high enough to get in to the poured concrete. The Next work Day Wednesday Jan 9, Terry showed up in the early morning and made sure everything was still perfect, his pumper truck showed up on time and started pumping concrete as soon as the concrete truck came; He worked through the full load and prepared for the second truck. His pumper cleaned everything up and Terry stayed to finish the concrete. It looks perfect, he cleaned everything up and I could not be happier. Terry was the right choice. He has reasonable prices but customer satisfaction is on his mind and it shows. Midnight Masonry has all of my future concrete business.

We received several estimates for this job. his was most reasonable and actually used decorative interlocking blocks instead of cinderblocks. Terry showed up early, worked all day and completed the job in two days as promised. Results far exceeded our expectations, and the wall looks great. Terry is unusual in that he does not use email (computers), and the contract he presented to us was handwritten on note paper, however, if you do not let this throw you, Terry kept to his word and completed the job in an exemplary manner and on schedule I would highly recommend him, and I would use him again.

I can sum this up in a sentence - if you need someone to help you with brickwork or cement work, and you are looking at bids and feel puzzled about which company will do it the best - just call this guy. I am so glad I found him on Angies List. I have no doubt he saved me a lot of money while doing a first class repair.
Description of Work: Terry, the owner of this company, came out next day after I called him to give me a bid to repair some problems with my brick fireplace. I had missing grout and crack in the top area. He gave me a bid and when I asked when he could do the work, he offered to do the repair right then. About 90 minutes later, my fireplace is fixed up and looks much better. The quality of work was an A+ easily..

Although he was highly recommended on Angies list, we never got started. Terry, apperently did not want to take the reasonable risks of working with other licensed and insured contractors. If he changes his mind, I would consider using him, unless I find another contractor on Angies List.
Description of Work: Originally set up an appointment with Terry on Sunday 3/16 @ 3Pm, per his schedule. An hour before the meeting he cancelled, and postponed it til Thursday. The second go-around, he showed up on time. He had another job earlier in the day. He provided a verbal quote of $400 per day to manage "my workers", suggesting that I hire them from Home Depot. He would work along side them I explained to him that I had a contract with a licnesed landscape contractor that would supply the workers. (According to the City of La Mesa, licensed landscape contractors are not licensed to do retaining wall masonry work above 4 ft). My landscape contractor carries workers compensaton insurance as well as liability insurance, as does the civil engineer that designed the plans. In checking with the California State Contractors License Board, Terry is the sole employee and has no workers and therefor is not required to carry Workers Compensation Insurance. Terry agreed to do the job, but he would like to meet concurrently with design Civil Engineer, the landscape contractor, and myself so that everyone is on the same page. After spending time to set up the meeting and advising Terry of the meeting time, he stated that he didn't want to do the job, because "... either I or or my insurance company wanted to hold him liable/responsible for the work if anything went wrong". I insisted that the City of La Mesa would NOT allow me to pull a permit for the 60ft long, 2 tier retaining wall, without a licensed masonry contractor, unless I wanted to sign for the permit as an "owner builder." I further explained that in checking with Farmers Insurance (my homeowners insurance carrier), they would not cover any damages that would arise out of a failure.

My landscape design called for a large patio area to replace an existing wood deck. After reviewing the comments on Angie's List for Midnight Masonry, I opted to give the owner Terry a call. Terry called me back the same day, we scheduled a time to meet and he provided a written estimate within 24 hours. The estimate included a very detailed cost breakout for labor, lumber, rebar, cement, etc. The most impressive aspect of Midnight Masonry is that Terry does all the work himself, the person you meet is the person who does the job. Terry showed up early Saturday morning to remove the existing deck, leveled the dirt and created the form/shape for the new patio. The next morning the rebar was laid and on the 3rd day the concrete was poured and leveled. Terry's work ethic is unparalleled, as is the quality of work.

Terry accomplished the job in just 3.5 days. He was on the job every morning by 5:30 am and worked tirelessly until 6pm (or later) in the evening. This man does not take breaks, not even lunch breaks, except for an occasional sip of water. Terry is a perfectionist, and did an excellent job building the slump block wall in the front of our home. We are very satisfied with the job that he did for us.

I arranged and paid for the dirt excavation around the shed. The diggers didn't do the greatest job and Terry had to spend an extra hour and a half to "clean up" their work. He was not going to charge for this, but I paid him an additional fee anyway. This was a two-day job. Terry was very organized, was always on time (early actually), and did all of the work by himself, exactly as planned and in a professional manner. The $1480 price I have quoted includes the cost of the tinted concrete, the concrete delivery truck, the pumper, and other materials. Terry's professional services represent less than 1/3 of the price of the project. If I have another concrete job, he is the guy I will hire. I just recommended him to my neighbor. As they say on the street....."He da' man."
