The reply I got for an inquiry about landscape design was arrogant and unprofessional. I quote, "However, since my expertise is design, I generally don't accept projects where the design has been more or less pre-determied, as appears to be the case here, at least for the hardscape. Instead, I begin by determining what the goals of the client are, and the actual physical design evolves from, and is informed by that. In other words, for example instead of starting with 'the patio is going here', it would be 'we want the front yard to be welcoming and accommodate these activities'." I would think that stating with the desires of the homeowner would be a place to begin a conversation not shut us down with "I'm smarter than you because you don't know what I want". Obviously I have questions about how to proceed and what would look the best given our yard and area. If I did not have questions, I would mark the area out with spray paint and tell a crew to pour concrete and to heck with the idea that it looks good or not. BTW -- some of our neighbors have done just that. The look of their landscaping is very different from the examples I have seen at homes where a landscape architect helped the owner with the project. We did not use him and will look for someone who wants to work with the owner not dictate.
Description of Work: I asked for a consultation on some front yard landscaping design -- we had several options in mind for how a front patio area might work out. Were are definite on having a front patio since the kids in our neighborhood play outside all the time. The questions include: do we want to landscape with native plants or xeriscape with some imports, did we want a wall or a barrier of planters, what size and shape patio, should the landscaping be one level or terraced, etc. The response I got was arrogant and unprofessional.

Response from Chris Drayer
I feel I must respond to this gentleman's comments, as I have never encountered such an angry individual in my entire 40 year career. First of all, I would dispute his characterization of his inquiry as flexible. It really did appear to me that he had a specific location and shape in mind for his patio and merely wanted me to draw it for him. Even though I was sure we would not be a good-client designer fit, I decided to take the time to explain- or so I thought- how he might get the most value out of a consultation with a design professional. I realize that written communications between people who have never met are susceptible to misinterpretation, and I even apologized in a reply to him that he felt offended- but no good deed goes unpunished, apparently, and I was subjected to a nasty e-mail and, as I discovered sometime later, this rather scathing review. You can't please them all, I guess.

It went surprisingly well. All through the process,Chris talked with us and really listened to what we wanted. He's an artist with color and texture, and willing to discuss alternatives. Chris turned our uptight pseudo-French-Provincial yard into a beckoning xeriscape. He made creative suggestions, and gave us a lovely courtyard with colorful unusual plantings. We had planned to re-landscape only the front yard but liked it so much we had Chris design the back as well.
Description of Work: Chris measured the yard, reviewed the site (not in good shape), developed a plant palette and plan, a concept plan, then a detailed planting plan, and recommended a crew to do the hardscape, irrigation and planting.

We have been working with Chris Drayer for nearly 5 years. He provided the initial drawing and planting list for a complete overhaul of the front and backyards for our house in North Park, San Diego. Chris was mindful of our requests to use minimal irrigation and maximize privacy. We were unable to hire a landscape contractor immediately, but when we finally could afford the project, Chris provided some oversight and consultation while the project was under way. In the time since, Chris has inspected our property annually to note the growth of the plants and guide our gardener in projects such as pruning, fertilization, increasing/decreasing water supply, and replacing plants that failed to thrive. He is honest, professional, and has an impeccable eye for landscapes that balance beauty and practicality. On another note, Chris has volunteered his time and expertise in working North Park neighborhood associations on gardening projects in common areas, such as parkways and canyons. He favors native plant species that transform trampled dirt patches into beautiful nooks and corners that instill a sense of order and pride in the community. We are very fortunate to have him as a member of the North Park community.
Description of Work: 1. Initial meeting and property walk-through to examine light exposure, adjacent properties, and determine our highest priorities for the project: a low-maintenance landscape design that requires minimal irrigation, improves privacy, provides space for outdoor entertaining, and matches the aesthetic of the house itself, which is more cottage-like than craftsman. 2. Draw a landscape plan that shows dimensions of structures including porches, patio, seating wall, new walkways. 3. Include a drawing that shows placement and mature dimensions of plants on the property. 4. Develop a list of plants to be used in different zones of the yard. 5. Yearly inspections to make sure that the landscape is developing as it should. 6. Meetings with our gardener to discuss details of yard maintenance, including how specific shrubs and trees should be pruned or washed, where irrigation should be adjusted, and when plants need to be replaced or simply handled with extra TLC.

The project went great, despite some adverse circumstances. Chris's labor was very reasonable ($70/hour) and his design was excellent. We were naive about the potential costs of the work, but Chris didn't make us feel stupid; he helped us figure out how we could work within our limits to still make something great out of the project. We had several setbacks with contractors who were hired to do the actual work. Chris consulted us on how to handle these challenges appropriately, and we greatly appreciated his advice. Now that the work is finished, Chris continues to check up on our plants and provide advice on how to help them maintain optimum health. He is honest and thoughtful and very talented.
Description of Work: We bought a 1930s craftsman home in North Park in 2005. It was a fixer-upper. We knew that the yard could use some work, but first we had to work on the house, which needed a lot of improvements. Four years later, I was jogging down the block and I noticed a man working diligently in his yard. I'd always admired his landscaping, so I decided to stop and offer a compliment, hoping to find out who had helped to design such a natural and pleasant mix of plants for his yard. The landscape architect and homeowner were the same -- it was Chris Drayer. Shortly after, we hired Chris to help us design a new landscape for our house. We wanted something in the "cottage" style (not so tropical), because that's what seemed to suit the architecture of the house itself. We wanted low-maintenance plants that wouldn't require a lot of water, and we wanted as much privacy as possible from our eccentric neighbor to the south and the 2-story apartment building to the north. We didn't give Chris a budget limit, so when he delivered his design to us, we were completely thrilled with the drawing...until we had contractors give us bids to do the project. They wanted between $35 and $50k to do the work. We had no idea that people could spend that much money on their yard! Alas, it was our naivete that was to blame. Chris has worked on some very prestigious projects, and for clients who have very deep pockets, so we were not his usual fare. But he was very understanding of our limits and helped us figure out ways to save money on the design and installation. When we finally hired a contractor to start the work almost 2 years later, Chris came to the house every few weeks to check the progress and make sure that the design was going according to his original plan. In the end, the project turned out great. We had to move out of state shortly after it was finished, but because of Chris's thoughtful design (and our excellent gardener Vicente of Sanchez Lawn Service), the plants are flourishing, even with renters in the house, and our property is now one of the prettiest in the surrounding neighborhood.
